SHANGHAI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - As meteorologists tracked Typhoon Dolphin's path toward China in recent days, a new generation of artificial intelligence weather models worked alongside traditional forecasting systems, highlighting ‌China's emergence as a leading player in the race to improve weather prediction.
Chinese-developed systems, including Shanghai AI Laboratory-developed ‌Fengwu, Huawei's Pangu and Fudan University's **** i, are among a handful of AI forecasting models that researchers say can generate forecasts much faster than conventional systems while matching or surpassing them on some measures of accuracy.
For decades, weather prediction has relied on numerical models running on supercomputers that simulate atmospheric physics. AI models instead learn patterns from vast archives of historical weather observations and can produce forecasts in a fraction of the time. The technology is increasingly being tested during typhoon season in East Asia, where even small improvements in track ‌forecasts can help authorities better prepare for ⁠flooding, organise evacuations and manage potential transport disruptions.
The rise of AI weather forecasting has created a new arena of competition among technology companies, research institutes and meteorological agencies, with China emerging as ⁠one of the field's leading players.

It's obvious why P.J. Fleck and Minnesota are in favor of an expanded College Football Playoff. At 24 teams, the Golden Gophers would have likely made the CFP a few times since 2021, as Fleck and the Golden Gophers have won at least eight games four times in those five seasons, while also winning all five bowl games they have played in. This isn't even taking into account the 2019 season when Minnesota won 11 games and finished the season ranked 10th in the country.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tarik Skubal yielded three runs on four hits while pitching five innings in the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner's home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers against Kansas City on Monday night.
Skubal left with the Dodgers trailing 3-2 after a decent, if unspectacular, first start in the home whites. Although he struck out six, Skubal didn't live up to manager Dave Roberts' pregame prediction of "an electric night" for the vaunted left-hander and his slumping club, which lost eight of nine heading into this homestand.
Skubal needed 95 pitches and managed just one 1-2-3 inning against the Royals, with Jac Caglianone tagging him for a two-run homer and an RBI single. Skubal also issued two walks and hit a batter in just his second career appearance at Dodger Stadium, taking the mound nine days after the defending champions acquired him from Detroit in the biggest trade of the deadline.
Los Angeles gave up three promising prospects for what might be a short-term rental of the 29-year-old Skubal, who will reap the benefits of unrestricted free agency this winter.

Scooping ice cream, lifeguarding swimming pools, and restocking retail stores during the summer has long been teenagers' rite of passage. For most, it's the first time they build real-world skills and earn their own pocket change. But now, teens are up against the worst summer job market since the Great Recession. Landing a job at the back of a mom-and-pop shop feels almost as hard as scoring a full-time corporate role.
"I didn't know it was going to be this hard. I thought it was going to be quite easy. And with all the applications I sent through, I feel a bit discouraged," Simon Chow, a 17-year-old who spent months applying to dozens of summer gigs, tells Fortune. "I'm looking everywhere, and I'll take anything at this point."
Around 790,000 jobs in May, June, and July of this year opened up for teenagers—down from around 801,000 gigs from 2025—according to a recent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. And if the study's prediction plays out, this stretch of summer would mark the lowest teen hiring since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking the data. Beyond the previous year, the only other time this figure dropped to a low this concerning was in 2010 (960,000), when the U.S. was reeling from the Great Recession.
Now, teenagers are having to get crafty to land their minimum-wage summer gigs. Like many job seekers, they're playing the numbers game, sending out dozens of applications only to be ghosted. Others are employing the old-fashioned strategy deployed by their parents, strutting up to storefronts with resume in hand and elevator pitch memorized. And after months of searching, some tough realities have become clear: landing a seasonal job in this market can require connections, experience, and the guts to put themselves out there.

Former NBA forward Royce White made waves earlier this week by declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
The 35-year-old has now made a wild prediction that even LeBron James could join him in the league after retiring from the NBA.

LSU football is in the running for a 2028 quarterback who announces his college decision in a week. Donald Tabron will commit live on the Rivals YouTube channel on August 15 at 5:00 p.m. CT. The four-star prospect's top three includes LSU, Oregon and Texas A&M.
Rivals' Industry Rankings ranks Tabron No. 28 overall in the 2028 class. He is the No. 3 passer and No. 2 player out of his home state. Tabron hails from Detroit, MI and plays at Cass Technical High School. Rivals lists him as six-foot-four and 190 pounds.
The Aggies are the heavy favorites to land Tabron's commitment per Rivals' Prediction Machine. But in college football today, a player's recruitment journey is rarely over this early in the process. Happy Sunday Husky fans. Last week I took the weekend off as it's somewhat of a slower time in recruiting, however with camp in full action and some recruiting news trickling in I wanted to mention some news that was pretty massive. With high school football about to kick in there will likely be more news not only on the 2027 front but also on the 2028 front.
5 star defensive end Jalanie George from Desert Edge HS, AZ was recently predicted to be leaning to UW with some predictions coming in from On3. George, who is rated as the 2nd best prospect in the country by On3, already has a really good frame (he's listed at 6'5" and around 240 pounds currently). George narrowed his list to a top 6 a couple months ago and the Huskies were the only west coats program on the list. As a sophomore last season George had 16 TFL's and 6.5 sacks on a team with 2 current Husky commits (QB Blake Roskopf, and WR Zerek Sidney). The Huskies would love to add another top player from Arizona and Coach Fisch and his staff have really taken advantage of their prior relationships in that state. It sounds like George could be making a decision soon, and if that's the case I like where the Huskies stand for him. If the Huskies are able to reel him in it would be another massive win for Coach Fisch and his staff.
5 star offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes from Cass Technical HS, MI was offered by the Huskies staff this last week. On3 has him rated as the 5th best offensive lineman in the 2028 class. Offensive line coach Mike Switzer has been recruiting really well over the last couple of cycles and is definitely taking some shots on some top prospects around the country after landing 5 star offensive lineman Kodi Greene in the 2026 class. Wilkes, has a good frame to grow into (6'5" and around 265 pounds currently), and already holds offers from most of the top programs around the country. It will be interesting to track Wilkes over the next year to see if the Huskies can get him on campus.

There are plenty of new faces in new places as the 2026 college football season inches closer. Some of these coaches in the first year with their new programs are tasked with resetting the culture, others are expected to bring a sense of stability, and a select few are burdened with the mandate to win right away.
Penn State head coach Matt Campbell certainly won't be fired or reprimanded if he struggles in his first year in Happy Valley, but this is a proud program that won't accept mediocrity or underachievement for very long. Brad Crawford of CBS Sports predicted the records for each new coach this season, and the Nittany Lions' leader got a respectable estimate at 9-3.
This record is tied for third-best among all of Crawford's coaching predictions, with Utah coach Morgan Scalley and LSU coach Lane Kiffin ranked higher. Campbell is even expected to do better than Kyle Whittingham at Michigan, who is arguably walking into a much easier situation with a lot more talent.
9-3 likely wouldn't be enough to get into the College Football Playoff, but it would secure a Bowl Game and be a much smoother ride than last year's rollercoaster. Crawford has Penn State going 6-3 in the Big Ten, likely meaning losses against Michigan and USC. It hopefully wouldn't be a sign of things to come, but after more than a decade of big-game blunders under the leadership of James Franklin, it would be a relief for fans if Campbell didn't begin his tenure losing two of his only big games in the conference.
It's tough to gauge any team's standing right now with no games or scrimmages happening, but the vibes seem to be positive around the Nittany Lions at the moment. Let's see if they can parlay this energy into a successful season that shocks some people.

Georgia Tech's football season kicks off on Thursday, September 3 against Colorado, finishing the home & home series that began last year out in Boulder with a 27-20 win for the Jackets. Last year's was the first between the schools, retroactively becoming the 1990 National Championship Game as the two schools did not actually play in 1990 when chasing the national ***** le.
Both teams will look quite different this time around. Of course on Tech's side, the offense has new leadership between offensive coordinator George Godsey and new starting quarterback Alberto Mendoza. For Colorado, they bring back Carrollton, GA native Julian Lewis at quarterback, who did not play in last year's game in favor of Kaidon Salter. Lewis only played in four games late year, completing 55% of his passes and throwing for 299 yards in a start against West Virginia.
On the whole, Colorado is not predicted to be competitive in the Big 12 with predictions around the college preview woorld putting them at around 3-4 wins. Deion Sanders' team is in a full rebuild after version 1.0 of his Buffaloes with Travis Hunter playing both ways and Shedeur Sanders at QB (who both for some reason got their uniform numbers retired immediately after graduating).
Last month at Big 12 media days, Lewis noted to what I can ***** ume was a very startled audience that in 2025, Lewis didn't really plan for defenses.
