Former world number one Iga Swiatek survived some nervy moments to launch her US Open build-up with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sara Bejlek in her second-round opener at the Toronto WTA 1000 on Tuesday.
In her first match since her Wimbledon **** le defense ended with a third-round exit, Poland's Swiatek was rolling through the first nine games, appearing in total control with a double-break for a 3-0 lead in the second.
But her Czech opponent dug in and disrupted Swiatek's rhythm, winning two straight games before Swiatek pulled off a great escape -- fending off nine break points in a 22-minute sixth game to hold serve for a 4-2 lead.
"It was quite a weird game I've got to say," Swiatek told Tennis Channel. "I felt like we both were kind of changing the rhythm and the pace all the time, so sometimes it was hard to adjust to it.
"I'm happy that I stayed in the game and stayed solid because I felt at the end it got pretty physical."

Olympique Lyonnais were certainly hoping for a better start to their season. Away at Sparta Prague for the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, Les Gones suffered a worrying 2-1 defeat in the Czech Republic.
Playing in an experimental 3-4-2-1 formation, Paulo Fonseca's men appeared to lack their bearings for the vast majority of the match. That is why seeing them go into the dressing room with a one-goal lead at half-time, thanks to an own goal by Martin Suchomel (0–1, 45'), seemed nothing short of a miracle.
Despite coming out stronger in the second half, Lyon nevertheless conceded, somewhat predictably, the equaliser on the hour mark through Matěj Ryneš (1–1, 63′). It was a blow to the Rouge et Bleu, followed by a second, as captain Corentin Tolisso missed his penalty four minutes later, following good work from new signing Loïs Openda. And it took them only a few seconds to regret it, with John Mercado scoring Prague's second goal straight away (2-1, 69′).
Reorganised into a 4-3-3 formation following Paulo Fonseca's substitutions, Lyon pushed forward but were unable to turn the tide. With a week to go before the second leg in front of their home crowd at the Groupama Stadium, the Champions League has never seemed as far away as it did tonight for the Rhône side.

Managerless Newcastle announced the signing of Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese side Braga on Monday.
Hornicek has agreed a five-year deal after the Magpies activated his 30-million-euro (£25.7 million, $34.6 million) release clause, and he becomes the club's fifth signing of the summer.
"The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I'm so happy to be here," said the 24-year-old, who is expected to supplant Nick Pope as first-choice goalkeeper.
"I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St James' Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can't wait to play in front of them."
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Hornicek had "firmly established himself as one of Europe's top young goalkeepers".

Newcastle United have announced the signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from SC Braga a deal worth €30.578 million.
Hornicek was officially unveiled as the Magpies' latest signing this morning, having put pen to paper on a five-year contract — running until June 2031.
"The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I'm so happy to be here. It's a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I'm very excited about," the Czech international said on his arrival.
"From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club. Everyone has been brilliant in helping me settle in.

A consortium led by former Newcastle director Amanda Staveley is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire a significant stake in West Ham United.
The group, which includes Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, is understood to be targeting the 25 per cent shareholding currently held by Vanessa Gold.
Ms Gold inherited the shares following the death of her father, David Gold, in 2023 and has since indicated her willingness to sell. This potential investment comes amidst a period of flux for West Ham's ownership structure.
Last month, the club announced that Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky was poised to become the largest shareholder, having agreed to purchase an additional stake from the Gold family. This deal would see Kretinsky's share increase to 43 per cent, surpassing David Sullivan's current 38.8 per cent, though this transaction remains unconfirmed.
Sullivan, who resigned last month following historic allegations of misconduct which he denies, has not yet disclosed his plans for his own shares.

The European Commission (EC) has approved Saica Group's acquisition of Thimm Group plants in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania.
The deal covers all activities in those four countries, comprising nine corrugated board plants. It also includes one preprint facility in Ilsenburg, Germany.
Saica said the operation will increase its corrugated cardboard production capacity by 1,200 million square metres and add around 2,500 employees.
The acquisition will support its objective of developing local markets and getting closer to customers, it added.
Saica Group president and CEO Susana Alejandro said: "We are very happy to integrate Thimm's team within Saica Group, its knowledge and skills are highly appreciated in the sector. At Saica Group, people makes the difference: they are what drives our organisation. We are convinced they will contribute to Saica's future and its success.

Czechoslovak Group is setting up an advanced propulsion manufacturing facility in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, through its US subsidiary CSE USA and new unit Firecrest Aerospace. The project starts with up to $15 million of investment and is expected to create about 125 skilled jobs over three years. Initial ****** embly should begin within months, with full-scale manufacturing targeted for 2027. The goal is simple. Build small turbojet and turbofan engines closer to US and allied customers, because drones are no longer a side quest in defense.
CSG announced plans to establish a U.S. manufacturing base for advanced propulsion systems in Central Wisconsin.
The project will be developed and operated by Firecrest Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of CSE USA, which is part of CSG. The facility will focus on small turbojet and turbofan engines used in unmanned aircraft systems, precision defense systems, target drones, loitering munitions and other next-generation aerospace applications.
The company expects to invest up to $15 million initially, with further expansion planned. The project is expected to create around 125 skilled jobs over the next three years.

This time we're going to be focusing on just the women's final, where Linda Noskova defeated her Czech countrywoman Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-3. Noskova raced out ahead to a 6-2 5-2 lead before the nerves of her first Grand Slame ***** le got to her, and Muchova saved several championship points to force a third set.
But then Noskova settled early on and, like the first set, overpowered the crafty Muchova.

Marc Marquez has defended Marco Bezzecchi from online hate after the Aprilia rider suffered a fracture to his collarbone during the German Grand Prix qualifying.
Bezzecchi was forced to withdraw from Sachsenring midway through the weekend following a nasty highside on Saturday afternoon, dealing another blow to his ****** le hopes in MotoGP this year.
The injury followed just weeks after the Italian was suspended from the Czech Grand Prix for slapping a marshal following the Brno sprint. Bezzecchi also collided with Marquez at last October’s Indonesian GP while trying to recover from a slow start, leaving the Spaniard with a shoulder injury that continues to affect him.
In response to comments about Bezzecchi’s shoulder fracture being payback for his previous actions, the reigning world champion urged MotoGP fans not to pile criticism on his rival.

THE ALL ENGLAND CLUB, London — A year on from Amanda Anisimova’s emotional speech after a 6-0, 6-0 Wimbledon final defeat to Iga Świątek, Karolína Muchová was similarly struggling to hold it together.
The tears flowed down her face on Saturday early evening just as they had done for Anisimova a year earlier, as Muchová went up to do one of the toughest things in tennis: Give a runners-up speech, having just suffered one of the biggest heartbreaks in the sport.
This was nothing like the loss Anisimova had suffered, but it will be no less crushing — even if the emotions are different.
Muchová was beaten 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 by her friend and fellow Czech Linda Nosková, who overcame unraveling at her first sight of the finish line in the second set by resetting to win in three.
Between the second and third sets, the match had seemed there for the taking for Muchová. The 29-year-old had saved five championship points, winning five straight games, to come from 5-2 down against an opponent who was falling apart. When Muchová forced break point three times in the first game of the decider, a comeback win seemed inevitable.

Linda Noskova is the latest in a long line of Czech women to win Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old Noskova recovered from a second-set meltdown in which she wasted five match points to overcome Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in an all-Czech final on Saturday for her first Grand Slam trophy.
When Noskova finally won it with a service winner on her sixth match point, she covered her face and dropped down to the grass on her back.
“It’s never easy to get the last point,” Noskova said. ”Karo, you really made me work for it.”
Noskova became the third Czech woman in four years to win the grass-court major, after Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 and Barbora Krejcikova in 2024.

South Africa star Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25 with the Bafana Bafana community mourning the shock loss just weeks after he featured at World Cup 2026.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder played three times for his country and was part of Hugo Broos' side that advanced to the last 32, creating history in the first knockout World Cup match in their history before being eliminated by co-hosts Canada.
Adams played all three group games, starting the opener against Mexico and then featuring as a substitute against Czech Republic and South Korea.
Details surrounding Adams' passing remain unclear, with the South African Football Players Union paying tribute to the player in a statement: "The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.
"Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away at age 25, just weeks after appearing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the South African Football Players Union confirmed in a statement.
Adams had appeared in all three Group Stage games during Bafana Bafana's run, which included two starts. He started in the 1-1 draw against Czechia, despite his grandmother's death one day prior.
A cause of death has not officially been reported at this time.
"The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams," a statement released on Saturday morning read.
South Africa was officially eliminated from the tournament on June 28 in the Knockout Stage by co-host nation Canada.

Celtic are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek. The Czech stopper spent last year on loan at Bristol City and impressed in the English Championship.
According to transfer journalist Pete O'Rourke, Celtic are interested in signing the 22-year-old. Celtic are in the market for a new goalie to compete with Vil Sinisalo after Kasper Schmeichel hung up his gloves in the summer.

The Old Trafford side have Vitek under contract until 2028 but they might be willing to sanction a permanent move for the goalkeeper.
Michael Carrick's side have Belgian goalie Senne Lammens and they're expected to add Karl Darlow as their third goalkeeper. Reports have indicated that Vitek will be available to leave either on a transfer or a loan deal.

South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at age 25 less than three weeks after helping his country advance out of World Cup group play for the first time.
The Mamelodi Sundowns player started South Africa's first two games, a 2-0 defeat against host Mexico and a 1-1 draw against Czechia. He then came off the bench in the 1-0 upset victory over South Korea that sent South Africa to the round of 32.
"The South African Football Players Union is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams," the SAFPU said in a statement Saturday. "Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large."
Neither the SAFPU nor the South African Football ***** ociation immediately returned emails from Yahoo Sports seeking further information on the timing or cause of Adams' death.
Adams came through the youth system of South African club Stellenbosch FC, becoming their first academy product to sign a professional contract. He made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
