LOS ANGELES -- The Phoenix Mercury visited the Los Angeles Sparks last month at the Galen Center in the University of Southern California. A lot changed from their visit before that a couple of weeks before to their game at USC.
For Kahleah Copper, a lot changed for her as well. Hours after their game against the Sparks on July 22nd, Copper was named to the All-Star team as she replaced her friend, then-Sparks guard Kelsey Plum.
About a week after All-Star weekend, Plum was traded to the Mercury and the friends were suddenly teammates.
"(Plum brought) her energy, her vibes, her leadership, her championship experience (to the team)," Copper said before their game against the Sparks at USC. "She knows what it takes to win. I'm glad to play alongside with her."

Hull scored 14 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting, made two 3-pointers and added two rebounds in 26 minutes. It was her first double-digit scoring performance since July 9 against the Phoenix Mercury.
The breakthrough came after a difficult stretch in which Hull recorded four scoreless games despite continuing to start for one of the WNBA's top teams. White acknowledged that the slump affected Hull, but it did not change how the guard approached her responsibilities.
"Certainly was struggling with confidence, but you could never tell in the way that she shows up," White said Wednesday. "She's always going to show up. She's always going to stay ready."

Bonner and the Mercury parted ways after Phoenix was eliminated from playoff contention. The agreement gives the 38-year-old veteran an opportunity to join a contender before the end of her 17th WNBA season.
The move also gives Phoenix a chance to evaluate a young player during its remaining games.
Poffenbarger went undrafted in 2026 but later signed with the Chicago Sky.

The 38-year-old came up just short in last season's WNBA Finals, and Phoenix now is affording her a chance to latch on with a contender and pursue a third career championship before a possible retirement this winter.

The Phoenix Mercury were officially eliminated from playoff contention after falling 97-87 to the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Mortgage Matchup Center.
Alyssa Thomas posted her third triple-double of the season with 11 points, 16 rebounds and 10 ****** ists, while Kahleah Copper had 38 points.
The Mercury were down by as many as 16 points in the third quarter before outscoring the Dream by 10 points and shooting 59.1% (13-of-22). Copper made all but two of her nine shots and scored 18 of the Mercury's 33 points in the stretch.
"Right now, we're playing for pride, and I think all of us are disappointed with how the year has gone," coach Nate Tibbetts said. "The second half (against Atlanta), you can lay your head down tonight and know that you competed and played with passion and to our standard. You just can't give in, and I thought in the second half, we responded and played in a manner that you can feel good about."
However, the loss came with the sobering reminder of Phoenix's shortcomings in 2026. One season after making the WNBA Finals, the Mercury (13-24) underwhelmed in their follow-up. Tibbetts pointed out that early injuries, defensive struggles and a lack of 3-point shooting contributed to the season's early end.

Though Atlanta got off to an early lead, going up by as many as 15 points, the Mercury powered back in the third quarter to get back within one point. But Reese turned up the heat in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 of her total points in the final frame to secure a 99-89 victory.
Reese's previous career high was 27 points, a number she hit in July of her rookie season while with the Chicago Sky. This is Reese's first time breaking 30 points in a single game in the WNBA; she also pitched in 14 rebounds in Saturday's win.
With the win, Atlanta also became the fifth team to clinch a WNBA playoff berth. Though the middle of the league table is tight, Dream currently sit fourth in the standings with a 24-13 record and a game in hand.
The Dream's victory came despite a big night from two of Phoenix's stars. Kahleah Copper scored 38 points after getting hot in the third quarter, a number that falls just three short of her WNBA career-high.

Indiana joins the Minnesota Lynx, Golden State Valkyries and defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces in ****** uring spots for the postseason. The Fever lost an opportunity to directly clinch a playoff bid with a 91-85 defeat versus the Dallas Wings on Thursday.
Indiana has now made the playoffs for the third consecutive season, coinciding with Caitlin Clark joining the team as the WNBA Draft's No. 1 overall pick in 2024, after a seven-year absence from the postseason.
Last season, the Fever defeated the Atlanta Dream in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Aces in a five-game semifinal series.
At 24-13 going into Saturday's matchup with the New York Liberty (22-15), the Fever currently hold the No. 4 seed in the WNBA standings, a half-game ahead of the Atlanta Dream. Following their 124-88 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, the Dream (23-13) play the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.

On Thursday, NBC Sports announced Charles is joining its WNBA studio team of Bird, Miller, Taylor, and LaChina Robinson. NBC Sports listed Charles as "a feature contributor."
Charles retired from the WNBA in May after an all-time great, 14-year WNBA career. The Connecticut Sun selected her No. 1 out of UConn in the 2010 WNBA Draft, and she won WNBA Rookie of the Year before winning WNBA MVP in 2012. The eight-time All-Star center made "The W25" as one of the 25 most significant players in the WNBA's first 25 years.
"Growing up, I watched the NBA on NBC, so joining NBC Sports is truly a full-circle moment for me," Charles said in a statement. "It's even more meaningful to be part of NBC's return to the WNBA, a league that has given me so much throughout my career.
