Experienced investors know the advantages of buying and holding S&P 500 index funds like the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) or the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY). Not only are they super simple, but statistically speaking, you're likely to get better performance from them than you are by picking individual stocks or by owning an actively managed fund.
Nevertheless, given its long-term (and often market-beating) track record, even the most disciplined of investors might have the itch to step into a stake in Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB). But is it actually the better buy?

Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate consisting of several dozen reliable cash-producing businesses as well as a portfolio of hand-picked stocks. Brought to prominence by Warren Buffett, the company's flexible structure has enabled its shares to consistently outperform the S&P 500 since Buffett first took the helm in 1965.
It hasn't beaten the market every year since then, to be clear. Some years it did. Other years it didn't. It typically achieved the feat in five-year time frames.

Around 57% of households have some type of unsecured debt, including credit cards and personal loans. This debt can be a financial burden because borrowers must make monthly payments and cover interest.
Once you've taken on debt, you're committed to paying it back. Otherwise, you could hurt your credit score and face collection activity. But what happens if the company you borrowed from runs into financial trouble and goes out of business? Does that mean your debt disappears?

Saving for retirement is hard. For starters, humans aren't very good at delaying gratification. And saving is basically choosing not to spend today so you can spend, hopefully even more, in the future. But there's another problem with saving for retirement: it is hard to set a goal. There's one popular retirement rule that can help with that. Here it is.
When you think about money, the gut reaction is to compare yourself to other people. That's understandable, but it can lead you into troubling waters. For example, the average 65 to 74-year-old has a net worth of nearly $1.8 million. So, you could argue that by 67 you should have that much money saved up. But that figure mashes together the very rich with people who aren't as fortunate. The median net worth, with half of all people above and half below, is roughly $410,000, which is a lot lower. Which one is the better target?
Missed AI's "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our ***** ysts, we're only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »
That doesn't even consider the fact that net worth includes ***** ets like a home, which isn't something you can easily tap for cash. Sure, you could sell your home and move into a small residence, but you still need to live somewhere. And you aren't average or median. You are you, and your earnings and savings numbers are unique.
That's where a simple savings rule comes in, based on your salary. Essentially, you are creating a personalized saving goal for retirement. To cut to the end of the story, the rule is that you should have 10x your salary saved by age 67. But that's just the final step in the process, because the rule provides benchmarks all along the way to keep you on track.

NEW YORK (AP) — Two major news networks were denied access to the White House on Saturday morning, with reporters from CNN and MS NOW both going live to report they'd been barred following a ban imposed by President Donald Trump.
The actions escalated Trump's long-running efforts to restrict news coverage by journalists he finds objectionable, and is the latest test of First Amendment protections in the United States. Trump said Friday he would ban both organizations and also Politico, because of their coverage — which he called "fake news."
CNN issued a statement saying it stood behind its reporters. "We will not be deflected from our duty to hold the government and other public bodies to account," it said. The statement was shown on the air before senior White House reporter Betsy Klein began to report on her ban.
MS NOW also said in a statement that it stands behind its journalists.
"The White House belongs to the American people and the decisions made inside are funded by our tax dollars," the network said in a statement Saturday. "MS NOW intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy."

Are you worried enough about rising interest rates jump-starting a recession that you're looking for ways of sidestepping the effect of such an economic headwind? It's not a terrible idea to at least start making a mental plan for that possibility.
You may have considered Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) to fill that role. Its wholly owned, private businesses generate plenty of cash flow regardless of the economic backdrop, after all.

But how do Berkshire shares actually perform during recessions? It's not like the data doesn't exist.
You probably know Berkshire Hathaway best by its stock picks. Although they're not built to be an actively managed mutual fund, its equity holdings -- and changes to these holdings -- are closely followed by investors looking for some new ideas for their own portfolios.

Markel mirrors Berkshire's three-engine model of insurance, equities, and operating businesses, with $18.84 billion in float and $429.5 million in 2025 buybacks, but its $22 billion market cap makes it a fundamentally different species.
Markel's combined ratio improved to 94.6% in 2025, yet shares are down 17% year to date while trailing Berkshire's 10-year return by 155 percentage points.
Three signals determine the Markel thesis: whether the combined ratio holds in the low 90s, buybacks sustain pace, and Markel Ventures remains inside the group.

Amgen (AMGN) yields 2.6% with a $10.08 annualized payout, topping Merck (MRK) at 2.29%, and has raised its dividend 6% annually versus Merck's smaller step-ups.
Amgen's 17 billion-dollar products and $3.5B quarterly free cash flow dwarf Merck's reliance on a single Keytruda franchise facing peak penetration.
Merck absorbed a $5.7B acquisition charge that pushed Q2 earnings to a loss, while Amgen raised 2026 EPS guidance to as high as $23.50.

For a retirement portfolio that leans on pharma dividends, the choice between Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) and Merck (NYSE:MRK) comes down to one question: which check is more likely to keep getting bigger through the next wave of patent expirations? Both companies deliver quarterly income today. Only one has the coverage, the growth cadence, and the portfolio breadth to keep raising through the cliff.

When Ray Dalio speaks, investors tend to listen, and likely for good reason. He ran Bridgewater **** ociates, the hedge fund he founded, for half a century, and over that time, he was one of the most successful investment managers in history.
In fact, he has long used history as a guide for deploying capital, and today, he believes history offers lessons for how investors should approach the AI boom. Specifically, he sees echoes of 1929 and 2000 in the current situation, and is urging investors to approach AI stocks with caution. Here is what he said and why investors may want to heed his advice.

First of all, investors should remember that Dalio has stepped down from Bridgewater. Thus, the fund's investments in AI stocks like ServiceNow and Nutanix were likely made without his input.
Given what he has said recently, he may even disagree with those purchases. When Dalio appeared on the podcast The Diary of a CEO in August, he said that AI shows "classic signs" of a bubble.

Sunny, low-tax states like Florida, South Carolina and Nevada have become a magnet for U.S. retirees, with Florida alone placing four cities in the top 10 WalletHub's Best Places to Retir survey. Scottsdale, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada also placed in the top 12 slots in the survey.
Relocation and family finance experts say retirees are drawn to sunnier, usually southern U.S. locales not only due to the warmer climate, but for a lower, or no, tax-rate. Now, data is showing that many retirees are finding their new states bring countering cost of living issues to the buffet table, most notably homeowners ****** ociation fees and sky-high home insurance rates.

Amazon (AMZN) has spent the bulk of 2026 giving investors tons to debate, from its growing cloud business to the enormous bill for its AI ambitions. Now, it's putting another spending decision in the spotlight, one that goes directly into workers' household budgets.
Amazon has announced more than $1.5 billion in higher pay for U.S. operations employees, alongside benefits aimed at everyday expenses.
For workers, the appeal is the obvious, immediate financial breathing room.
For Amazon, the calculation goes further. Keeping experienced employees helps the business built around getting orders to doorsteps a lot quickly. The details point to how Amazon is trying to make those interests meet, even as its broader efficiency push leaves questions about job security.

An equal $100,000 split across SGOV, JAAA, and CLOZ generates roughly $465 monthly at a blended 5.6% yield, no dividend stocks required.
CLOZ's 7.35% trailing yield on BBB-B rated CLO tranches drives $204 of the monthly income but carries the portfolio's highest credit risk.
Floating-rate CLO coupons in JAAA and CLOZ keep effective duration near zero, shielding principal from long-term rate swings while outpaying Treasury bills.

Income investors do not have to own dividend stocks to generate a meaningful monthly check. An equal $100,000 split across the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:SGOV), Janus Henderson AAA CLO ETF (NYSEARCA: JAAA), and Eldridge BBB-B CLO ETF (NYSEARCA:CLOZ) currently produces roughly $465 a month based on trailing distribution yields. The portfolio gets there without owning a single dividend stock and with very little traditional interest-rate exposure. Instead, SGOV owns Treasury bills, while JAAA and CLOZ invest in floating-rate collateralized loan obligations. That combination gives income investors three different steps up the risk ladder without requiring a move into equities.

Most crypto wallets have functioned as a home for buying and selling speculative tokens. Caroline D. Pham, CEO of MoonPay Institutional and former acting chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), thinks they are about to do something far more important for most investors.
"I do think that wallets are going to become the future, where you're going to have almost everything in your wallet," Pham said. "It's going to be your checking account, your savings account, your stablecoin wallet, your tokenized fund wallet. It's going to be your brokerage account."

The first step came Sept. 17, when WisdomTree and MoonPay announced a collaboration to expand U.S. access to WTGXX, the WisdomTree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund, which holds short-term Treasuries.
WisdomTree said it is building an access point for its tokenized funds on MoonPay's technology, which reaches more than 35 million users. MoonPay also plans to use the fund in its stablecoin reserves.

Data center developer Crusoe said Thursday it raised $3.9 billion in a Series F round that pushes its valuation to $30.9 billion. The massive round was co-led by Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners. Founders Fund, GIC, Nvidia, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), Radical Ventures, and TPG also participated, according to Crusoe.
Crusoe also announced three new board members, including Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert; Bill Stein, partner and CIO at Primary Digital Infrastructure; and Redwood Materials founder and CEO JB Straubel, who also sits on Tesla's board. Straubel already has ties to Crusoe; he personally invested in the company in 2021, and Crusoe later became the first customer of Redwood's energy storage business.
The eight-year-old company's fresh capital infusion will help finance existing data center projects, including a large site in Abilene, Texas, used by OpenAI, as well as smaller, modular AI factories that can be transported by truck and connected to large power sources almost anywhere.
By manufacturing these modular data centers, called Spark, at its own facilities, Crusoe can deploy compute capacity quickly and without the need for large construction workforces. The smaller centers could also help Crusoe sidestep, at least in part, another major obstacle facing data center developers: backlash from local communities protesting massive complexes near their neighborhoods.
Crusoe co-founder and CEO Chase Lochmiller, who is pictured above, said in a statement he believes AI will usher in an era of abundance, but to get there will mean "controlling the infrastructure from electrons to tokens, and we're grateful to have investors who share that conviction."

On that end, Berkshire's top-three positions -- consisting of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), American Express (NYSE: AXP), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (Nasdaq) -- make up more than half of its equity portfolio.
All three are strong compounding businesses with wide moats, but which looks like the best of the group to buy today? Let's take a look at each.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Apple is Berkshire's largest holding, making up about 22% of its portfolio. The stock is a Buffett favorite because it has one of the best compounding business models out there.
Apple, of course, is best known for its iPhone and other devices. Smartphones and computers tend to have very predictable replacement cycles, which creates an almost recurring type of revenue stream for the company. However, the beauty of the business stems from its closed-garden ecosystem that helps lock in consumers, from which it then collects high-margin service revenue. This revenue comes from a variety of sources, including a search revenue-sharing deal with Alphabet, commissions on app downloads, Apple Pay, and subscriptions for things like cloud storage.

GE Aerospace's $11.75 billion purchase of Consolidated Precision Products, announced September 8, is billed as fixing the castings bottleneck behind the company's $170 billion services backlog and a spare-parts delinquency rate that grew 20% sequentially in the second quarter.
The deal will not close until the second half of 2027, covers roughly a quarter of GE's airfoil needs, and CFO Rahul Ghai has told investors twice this month that "broad vertical integration is not the solution," calling CPP a "unique situation."
Sell-side price targets jumped hard after the announcement, with the mean target rising from $350.95 on June 30 to $401.00 by September 16, pushing the target-to-price ratio to 128.2%, the widest gap in over a year.
Over that same window, GE's share price fell from $373.73 to $312.90 and its NTM P/E multiple compressed to 37.16x, below its own two-year average of 39.31x and well off the roughly 50x peak reached a year earlier, even as consensus EPS estimates kept climbing smoothly through 2030 with no visible step-up.
GE Aerospace's (GE) own numbers make the case for urgency. Services backlog sits near $170 billion, internal shop visit capacity is running 40% oversubscribed, and spare-parts delinquency, shipments delayed by material shortages, grew 20% sequentially in the second quarter even as revenue rose. Management has said engines removed but not yet inducted into shops are up 60% year over year. That is the backdrop against which GE agreed to buy CPP, the world's third-largest maker of precision castings used in turbine blades and vanes.

Hub Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HUBG) disclosed on September 14 that preliminary, unaudited first-half 2026 revenue was expected to reach $1.7 billion to $1.8 billion, near management's expectations. Yet management anticipated an operating loss before one-time charges. This non-GAAP presentation excludes those charges, but neither the loss nor the exclusions were quantified.
Hub Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HUBG) identified higher fuel, rail, and drayage costs, excess warehouse capacity, and accounting-review and restatement expenses. The central issue is whether pricing and efficiency improvements can restore profitability on the revenue already moving through the business.
Hub Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HUBG) began implementing rate increases in the third quarter, after transportation costs had pressured first-half results. Relatively stable intermodal volume trends suggest an existing customer base on which better pricing could improve margins. If increases hold without significant volume losses, revenue could become more profitable without requiring a broad freight recovery.
Hub Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HUBG) also launched additional efficiency initiatives in the second quarter, including warehouse consolidation and improvements in driver and warehouse-worker productivity. These actions address specific weaknesses: underused ***** e spreads fixed costs across fewer orders, while low productivity raises the cost of each shipment or handling task. Better utilization could reinforce the benefit of higher rates.
Hub Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HUBG) is also targeting order-to-cash processes, which cover the steps from taking orders through billing and collection. Improvements could reduce administrative friction and accelerate cash collection. That would support liquidity while operational changes take effect, although faster collections alone would not repair an operating loss.

Opening a savings account for a child can help them build good money habits while giving their savings a safe place to grow. But because minors generally can't open bank accounts on their own, a parent or guardian will usually need to help. Here's how to open a savings account for a child, what you'll need, and how to choose the right account.
You must follow the right steps if you want to open savings account for your child. Much of the process is similar to opening a savings account for yourself, with some additional considerations.
Keep in mind that banks often require a parent or legal guardian to be present when opening a savings account for a child.
Start by choosing the right bank for your child's bank account. A simple and convenient option is to open an account where you do your own banking.

Autodesk (ADSK) stock has 23.6% of room above it before it meets a ceiling that has turned it back three times, and 5% below it before the reason to be there stops being true. In dollars: $272.34 overhead, $220.31 Wednesday, $209.29 underneath. The stock has lost about 31% over the past twelve months, so the easy read is that the business broke. Its own numbers say it did not.
Would You Have Made Money Buying Autodesk Here Before?
Buyers have stepped in at this price zone eight times before. Three of those eight produced a completed advance, averaging a 34.3% gain to the peak that followed, with a median of 459 days from the defense to that peak. The other five have not yet risen above their own starting price, so they are not in that average at all. The ceiling overhead asks for less than that average of the three that paid.
The last two years are the problem. Autodesk entered this price band on five separate occasions over the last twenty-four months, and counting only a 20% gain before any 5% fall as a defense, one held and four broke 5% lower first. The path up is not clear either: the stock has to get through $248.16 and $261.04, both pauses rather than proven ceilings.

The final change of the guard at the storied Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B).
Berkshire Hathaway said Friday that Warren Buffett, 96, will step down as chairman effective immediately. He will move to the chairman emeritus role.
In his place as chair will be his son Howard G. Buffett, as has been telegraphed would happen for years.
Board life will now look much different for Howard, who has a striking resemblance to his legendary investor dad.
And Howard Buffett knows the transition will change his life, which has long consisted of frequent world travel for philanthropic ventures alongside a daily routine of being a farmer who tills his own land.

Mortgage rates continue to rise as 2026 nears its fourth quarter. What is the outlook for home loan rates in the next five years? Should you wait for mortgage rates to fall significantly before buying or refinancing? Mortgage interest rates are determined by several factors, all of which can give us clues about the future. Let's take a closer look at mortgage rate predictions over the next five years.
Here are the housing market predictions for 2026.
One of the most useful indicators for predicting mortgage rates is the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note. Mortgage rates and 10-year Treasury yields typically move in the same direction, although mortgage rates are usually higher because lenders factor in additional risks. This difference is known as the spread, and we'll account for it when estimating where mortgage rates could go.
With that in mind, the first step is to look at where economists believe Treasury yields are headed over the next five years. To build a forecast, we'll combine expert economic projections with data compiled using artificial intelligence.

Over the last seven years, I've **** yzed hundreds of stocks and cryptocurrencies to see if they might be worth an investment. At the end of the day, I only end up buying a select few, like two of my longtime favorites, Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ: COST) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL).
Here's an abridged version of my research process -- hopefully it'll contain something useful to adapt as your own.
Continue »
I typically start by getting the lay of the land regarding the company in question.
Step zero is comparing the stock's total returns to the S&P 500 over a range of different periods, starting from one month and extending to five years. Ideally, like both Apple and Costco, the company being evaluated will have outperformed the index over the last five years.

Netflix (NFLX) has fallen about 35% over the past year, while the S&P 500 returned about 17%. The complaint is simple. Sales growth is slowing, and management will not show the quality metrics it leans on. That case misses the engine under per-share earnings, a wider margin, and a shrinking share count.
Why Are ***** ysts Pressing Netflix On Its Slowing Top Line?
Management guided revenue growth of 11% excluding currency for the third quarter of 2026, below the second quarter's 12% on the same basis. The CFO put part of that step down to a back-half-weighted year-ago comparison. ***** ysts have also pressed on viewing hours per member, which they say has softened.
The shares trade near $78, about 63% of their 52-week high. At that price the market appears to be paying for a mature business. The buy case has to rest on something other than the top line.

Nebius Group (NBIS) bounced 5% Wednesday but remains down 21% over the past month, raising the question of whether sellers have finally exhausted their case.
CoreWeave (CRWV) fell nearly 20% over the same period as NBIS, signaling a shared repricing of pure-play AI cloud names rather than a Nebius-specific problem.
Only buying that holds across multiple sessions, especially without CoreWeave rising in lockstep, would confirm a real floor rather than another failed bounce.

Shares of Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) are bouncing Wednesday, but the question worth asking is whether the move ends the slide or just adds to a string of one-day bids that haven't held. Nebius stock is still down sharply over the past month, and today's gain has to fit inside that context to matter.

A $200,000 sale of MSFT held since 1995 generates a large capital gain that Section 213 nursing home deductions can largely erase on the same return.
Selling Dad's stock and paying his care costs must land on the same tax return; splitting them across two returns eliminates the deduction entirely.
Stock held since 1995 qualifies for a stepped-up basis at death, wiping the gain tax-free for heirs. Selling it makes sense only when Section 213 fully covers the cost.

If your parent entered a nursing home this year and you sold a long-held stock position to cover the bills, Internal Revenue Code section 213 can quietly absorb most or all of the capital gain. A family can sell $200,000 of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock held since 1995, realize a large embedded gain, and end the year owing surprisingly little federal tax. The same fact pattern, structured slightly wrong, produces a full tax bill with no offset.

The Federal Reserve voted unanimously to raise interest rates by a quarter percentage point and penciled in an additional hike later this year, steps aimed at containing inflation that will test Chairman Kevin Warsh's relationship with President Donald Trump. The benchmark federal funds rate is now in a range of 3.75% to 4%. Bloomberg's Michael McKee reports.
