Team USA's bid to win a fifth consecutive FIBA Women's World Cup gold medal begins now.
The Americans open the World Cup with a a preliminary round-robin matchup against China on Friday, Sept. 4, to kick off Group D play, which features Italy and Czechia, in addition to USA and China.
Team USA has been dominant in this tournament, winning nine of the last 12 FIBA World Cups, including four straight. This year's team will be coached by Kara Lawson and features rising American stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
Both teams had to make last minute adjustments to their rosters. Four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson, who was also the MVP of the 2022 World Cup, and Kelsey Plum won't play for Team USA in Germany due to health reasons. Meanwhile, two-time Olympian and Dallas Wings center Li Yueru won't suit up for the Chinese national team at the World Cup because her passport was lost in the mail, preventing her from traveling to Berlin for the international tournament. Yueru helped China capture a silver medal in the 2022 World Cup.
