NOVI SAD, Serbia (AP) — Small boats stand idle on cracked ground in a shriveled side channel of the Danube River in northern Serbia, where the water has receded into a couple of shrinking ponds under pressure from extreme drought and heat. Fish circle in the shallow waters.
"This is all we have, these two little ponds that are full of juvenile fish," fisherman Dusan Jovanovic said. He said the fish are in danger because there is too little water and its temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).
"If they start to die, they will all die at once," Jovanovic said.
Persistent drought and scorching heat this summer have ravaged ecosystems and businesses across the region, from a lake in Slovenia and the side channel of the Danube in Serbia, to fish farms in Bosnia, the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary.

The new (soon-to-be) owner of the Seattle Seahawks just got a lesson in how passionate the 12th Man can be about certain topics... especially when it comes to rivalries and historic hatred. Recently, the NFL voted unanimously to approve the sale of the Seahawks from the Paul G. Allen estate to venture capitalize Vinod Khosla and his family for a record-breaking $9.6 billion.
During his initial press conference following the approval meeting, Khosla opened up about his history of being an NFL fan... and although he was honest, he definitely shared too much. New Orleans Saints fans will have to wait until the regular season opener to see Tyler Shough lead the first-string offense onto the field. after Wednesday's practice at Tulane's Yulman Stadium, Saints head coach Kellen Moore said that "a lot of" first teamers won't play in Friday's preseason finale with the Dallas Cowboys.
Moore added that the first-team units on offense and defense saw 145 snaps between three joint practice sessions, which he felt was plenty of work. They were able to run different situations against different opponents' best players and learn what they needed in those controlled environments. From his point of view, putting his top talents into an exhibition game would just be an injury risk.
There's a couple of different trains of thought here. On the one hand, some coaches like to use the final preseason game as a "dress rehearsal" where they can see how their offense runs a scripted drive and their defense responds to real pressure. On the other hand, there's been a movement around the league to dial down the preseason snaps and protect their most valuable players from injury. That's an easy argument to buy when the game's result doesn't matter.
Even so, this approach will be second-guessed if the Saints start sloppy in a few weeks. Stumbling out of the gates and playing low-scoring, penalty-prone football and losing a couple of games (which is very possible between back-to-back road trips to visit the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens in Weeks 1 and 2) would invite a lot of criticism for not getting the starting units onto the field in these preseason games. Clearly that's a risk Moore is comfortable taking.

Even ***** ytical fans can be overcome with emotions. The last ten days have been brutal. If we remove the opener of the Mariners series, we saw the Astros got a combined 2-6 in the span of eight days. That was against a collection of teams where they probably were hoping for a 6-2 run. They blew late leads, the offense sputtered at times, and the starting pitching continued to struggle to get through the fifth inning. Even the normally reliable Yordan Alvarez seemed to hit a snag throughout much of the run.
I hate to boil things down to simple math, but this is usually where my brain goes. There are essentially six months in a baseball season. It's obviously grossly simplified to ***** ume four weeks in a month, but we could probably add one week in there to account for the extra days. That means there are 25 weeks in a season. The last homestand accounts for slightly more than a week's worth of games. 162 divided by nine equals 18. 18 is a nice round number.
To put this in perspective for most Houston fans, 18 essentially corresponds to the number of weeks in an NFL season. So, imagine if the Texans' offense failed to show up for a particular game. I know that's not hard to imagine. Imagine if they had held a lead into the fourth quarter and squandered it. Imagine if their defense simply got torched on a particular Sunday. What would the conversation be like?
Obviously, the conversation would likely depend on when that particular loss occurred. If it occurred in a random regular season game in October it would likely be a cause for concern, but no one would be quitting on the season quite yet. If it were the opening week of the season there would be some doom and gloom, but most people would realize it was just one game in a long schedule. If it occurred in January then obviously the season would be over.
This is where we find ourselves as Astros fans. We have experienced one terrible week of baseball. They have had worse this season. It doesn't seem like it but the first road trip was an unmitigated disaster. There have been stretches at home that have looked just as awful. So, the key to sound ***** ysis is to take a step back and keep a level head about these things.

Notre Dame football officially ended its fall camp on Friday, and with that head coach Marcus Freeman spoke to the media on a variety of topics.
One of those was some of the injured potential difference makers, more specifically wide receiver Quincy Porter. He's been dealing with a recovery from an offseason knee surgery, and the hope was that he'd be ready for the start of the season. However, it looks a bit dicey right now, as Freeman said Porter is "a couple weeks out" following another procedure to help the process.
After transferring from Ohio State during this past offseason, there were high hopes that he'd hit the ground running, but Porter hasn't been on the field enough for that to happen. He'll be playing catchup when he finally gets healthy, missing valuable reps that me missed out on this spring and early during the fall. Creating chemistry with quarterback CJ Carr is part of the process, and Porter hasn't been able to do much of that since arriving in South Bend.
There's still plenty of time for him to get past this surgery and see the field this fall. Hopefully he responds well, and we see Porter on the field sooner than later.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have officially confirmed the return of ****** anese international Ko Itakura from Ajax. The 29-year-old centre-back signs a contract through 2030 after spending just one season in Amsterdam. Kicker reports that Gladbach will pay an initial €3.5m, with bonuses potentially taking the deal to €4m. Ajax paid Gladbach a base fee of €10.5m for Itakura only last summer.

The Baltimore Ravens won't have to wait until the regular season to see how their defense responds to one of the NFL's most difficult quarterbacks to contain. Minnesota has named Kyler Murray its starting quarterback, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay is out of the hospital after last week's collapse and working to regain strength for his newest cancer treatment, his daughter announced.
Shay Thomas said last week on Instagram that the 12-year NHL veteran, who has been dealing with Grade 4 colon cancer that has spread to his liver, was taken to the hospital after fainting at his house, suffering facial injuries. She said doctors determined he had severe dehydration because he had been feeling sick and was having trouble eating.
Thomas provided a new update on Duguay, 69, after his release from the hospital.
"He still isn't feeling his best or eating much, but he is taking it day by day, trying to get down some soup and slowly regain his strength," she wrote.
"Our main focus is getting him strong enough to travel back to Orange County and return to City of Hope. His next treatment will be Bizengri, also known as zenocutuzumab-zbco, a targeted therapy that works by blocking certain signals that can help cancer cells grow. We are praying this will be the treatment his body responds to."

Mike Elias has made his first move ahead of the trade deadline. The Orioles are trading Dean Kremer to the Twins. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal broke the news of the trade. Another reporter at The Athletic, Dan Hayes, wrote that the return for the Orioles is 18-year-old outfield prospect Jhomnardo Reyes.
Selling off a player right after a dramatic win kind of sucks. The Orioles are one and a half games out of a dang wild card spot and this is how Elias responds. Not only is the first move a sell, it's selling to one of the teams that is ahead of the Orioles in the wild card standings. That's the immediate reaction.
On the other hand, Kremer has a 6.50 ERA across his seven starts this year. He is giving up home runs like they are going out of style. He's been consistent across the past three seasons before that, posting ERAs of 4.12, 4.10, and 4.19. If he finishes the season with that kind of ERA, the Orioles may end up regretting the immediate aftermath of this trade. If he doesn't, then Elias has moved on from a pitcher at a good time and done well to get a player in the process.

The New York Jets are coming off of a brutal campaign in 2025, with the team posting a 3-14 record, their worst mark since the NFL added a 17th game ahead of the 2021 season.
The pressure is on for this Jets regime -- led by head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey -- who very well could be on the hot seat if another disastrous season is the result in 2026.

A Fort Worth Police officer ticketed a preacher in late June, claiming the content of his speech was offensive. This week the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division launched an inquiry into the incident to determine if the officer violated the First Amendment.
The widely circulated video of the confrontation shows an officer and a protester during the Trinity Pride Fest on June 27. "If someone is offended by your talking, then we have a problem," said Officer Sara Stogner.
"That's a constitutional violation of our rights," responds David Grisham, a street preacher and retired federal law enforcement officer. The two continue to argue when Stogner **** erts, "OK, then I'll write you the ticket, and we'll go from there."
"Wait, you're going to ticket us for offensive speech?" the cameraman asks incredulously. To which the officer confidently responds, "Yes, absolutely."
Stogner continues to claim she can ticket the two men for disorderly conduct "if someone complains that your language or what you're saying is offensive."
But that's not how the First Amendment works, according to legal experts. "The First Amendment does not allow government officials to shut down speech simply on account of it being 'offensive,'" said Brennan VanderVeen, program counsel at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. "The government can restrict certain types of conduct or restrict noise above a certain volume level," he continued, but citing someone because people are offended by the content of protected speech is "precisely what the First Amendment does not allow."

One of the things Muller picked from the earnings report is Franklin BSP's ongoing shift toward becoming a full-service real estate platform. He noted that this transition is creating some earnings pressure in the short term.
