While the Tennessee ***** ans were busy going through the tape of Thursday night's preseason victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the organization and one of their players got some bad news from the NFL.
On Friday, the NFL announced that defensive back Nazeeh Johnson will be suspended for the club's first six regular-season games without pay for violating the NFL's Performance-Enhancing Substances Policy. Johnson can finish training camp and preseason with the team, but will go onto the suspension list beginning August 30 and be eligible for reinstatement on Monday, October 19.
The 28-year-old cornerback entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft after his college career at Marshall, and spent the entirety of his career in Kansas City before leaving as a free agent this offseason. Although he dealt with multiple injuries with the Chiefs, he developed into a solid backup and core special teamer, recording 66 tackles and one sack in 29 career games, making six starts over that span.
The ***** ans signed Johnson in late July to add some veteran competition in the secondary, and he made his debut against the 49ers, recording five total tackles (four solo). Now, after entering camp late and already on the bubble, it will be interesting to see how general manager Mike Borgonzi and head coach Robert Saleh handle his pending suspension.

I know what you're thinking. Fridays against the Nationals at Citi Field. Isn't that a bit of a narrow category for a "best of" list? That's a tremendously fair point, but for whatever reason, it seems a disproportionate number of the most memorable games in recent Mets history have come on Fridays against the Nats — whether jumpstarting hot streaks, announcing the arrival of new stars, or simply providing a moment of joy in otherwise bleak times.
There are a variety of good options to choose from, as the Mets have won six of their last eight and 14 of their last 22 Friday contests at home against Washington. I've selected a quartet that I believe stand above the rest as true classics. With another weekend series with the Nats upon us in 2026, it felt fitting to revisit the unique circumstances that led to these games, the actual on-field events that went down, and the legacy they've left behind. So without further ado, here are the top Friday nights at Citi Field vs. the Nats (so far):
4. deGame – April 23, 2021
Setting the scene: After over 18 months of covid-induced absence (not counting cardboard cutouts), fans were finally back in the stands at Citi Field — but things weren't exactly back to normal. Seating was **** ed out, tickets were limited, and the sport was settling into a transitional season before the expanded playoffs and universal DH, after the automatic extra-inning runner, with seven-inning doubleheaders and mounting concern about "sticky stuff." But the Mets had promise, fresh off the acquisition and long-term extension of Francisco Lindor, out to a respectable 8-7 start, and featuring a two-time Cy Young Award winner who only seemed to get better with age. Thus far in 2021, Jacob deGrom held a 0.45 ERA with 35 strikeouts and three walks over three starts. As he warmed up in the bullpen before this Friday night start against the Nationals (only the seventh home game and third home night game since fans returned to the stadium), he felt so good that it made him "a little nervous." So we have a small but remarkably hungry crowd of 8,130 fans starved for something good to cheer, and a one-of-one ace nervous about just how good he might be. Sounds like a pretty good recipe.
Play ball: deGrom set the tone with a three-pitch strikeout of leadoff hitter Andrew Stevenson, each offering coming in at over 99 mph. One would think it could only get better for the Nats from that point on, but…not exactly. After five innings, they had struck out nine times and reached base only twice (on a well-placed grounder and a misplayed fly ball). The game was still scoreless, but that changed in the bottom of the frame when deGrom himself came to bat against Erick Fedde, slashing an RBI double to left and later scoring on a single by Brandon Nimmo.

The San Francisco 49ers elected to not play any starters in their first preseason matchup against the Tennessee ******* ans, but that could change in Week 2.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said he believed his first stringers looked good in a Wednesday joint practice with Tennessee, so he decided to keep them out and see what else the team is working with.
"If we didn't feel we got that work in, probably would have changed my mind. But was real happy with the work that we got that day," Shanahan said to reporters following the 49ers' Week 1 preseason loss to the ******* ans on Aug. 13. "The vets, the guys who didn't dress today, got a workout in yesterday. They got to work out with the coaches today, just routes on air and things like that. So they've gotten some work in, but it'll be good to have them fresh for Saturday, too."

Despite losing the series to the Cubs, the Nats ended things on a high note thanks to a Cade Cavalli masterclass. He helped secure a winning home stand and the bats continued to thrive. Now the Nats head to New York to face a last place Mets team. However, the Mets have been playing a bit better lately.

The way Stribling has performed so far in practice and his exhibition debut have quieted those criticisms for now. Stribling caught seven passes for 63 yards in less than one half on Thursday night against Tennessee, outplaying the top receiver taken in this year's draft in No. 4 overall pick Carnell Tate.
Stribling is well aware of the five receivers drafted ahead of him, but is more focused on his own play so far this summer as he hopes to play a big role for the 49ers as a rookie.
"I know who was taken ahead of me, but I just see it as this is my journey," Stribling said after the game. "My journey is my journey. I'm not going to look at someone else's journey, Because once I do that, I'm not going to be grateful or happy of where I'm at. So I'm just making the most out of my opportunities and what's given to me."
Stribling caught a pass on his first snap in an exhibition game with a 6-yarder from Kurtis Rourke. He couldn't catch a slightly off-target throw on third down later in that drive and also lost 5 yards on a pop pass.

According to Infotbal, Celtic have shown an interest in a 21-year-old attacking midfielder at Slovan Liberec, Ermin Mahmić, after learning the Czech side's conditions for a potential deal. This is where I'd hesitate. Martin O'Neill's Celtic have built around a pragmatic, physical approach, and that creates a poor fit for a lightweight No.10 who wants freedom between the lines. There was much made of the San Francisco 49ers' draft strategy in 2026 and from previous drafts. It's clear the 49ers have their own board, which is put together with physical and character traits that are desired by the organization. After one preseason game, the 49ers' rookie class was on display against the ****** ans.
De'Zhaun Stribling was stellar with seven catches. Ephesians Prysock showed off his speed and length at cornerback. Jaden Dugger flashed while playing multiple spots on the defense.

The San Francisco Giants made a series of moves on Friday, ahead of their series opener against the Colorado Rockies, as they're bringing up a pair of youngsters to replace a pair of youngsters.
As was reported on Thursday, the Giants are calling up outfielder Turner Hill to make his MLB debut. Hill is a tremendous story, as the 27-year old went undrafted in 2023 but has steadily rose through the ranks with strong defense, good base stealing, and sensational contact skills. He was on a 26-game hitting streak in AAA Sacramento, and in 88 games at the level this year posted a .950 OPS and a 148 wRC+, with just an 8.5% strikeout rate. The Giants are surely excited to get a long look at him over the next six weeks as they try to figure out which of their young players can contribute in 2027.
Joining Hill is Jonah ***** , who makes his return to the Majors following a brief stint in AAA. ***** was shockingly called up straight from AA in June, but played sparingly and looked fairly overmatched (while he collected a home run and a double off of position players, he hit just 5-24 with 15 strikeouts against MLB pitchers). The hair-on-fire 25-year old, who is arguably the best defensive outfielder in the system and the best base stealer, was injured in July, and got his first taste of AAA during a rehab ***** ignment. After finishing that rehab ***** ignment he was optioned back to AAA. In 11 games with Sacramento, ***** hit a stunning 22-47 with six extra-base hits and five walks, albeit some underlying metrics that should still give the Giants a little pause about his readiness for success at the next level.
With Jung Hoo Lee playing almost every game in right field, it seems likely that left and center will be handled by Hill and Drew Gilbert when a right-hander is on the mound, and by ***** and Victor Bericoto when facing a lefty.

It's especially tough news for McCray, who has to feel that his time with the organization might be nearing an end (though he has another option year after this one). Cam Ward's rookie season was, on the whole, bad.
You didn't hear much about that for some reason. Last year's No. 1 overall pick got a pass for the most part. Everyone decided to point out the highlights and focus on the terrible situation the Tennessee **** ans put him in, which was valid. This offseason brought a much better environment, with new head coach Robert Saleh, new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and some new talent on the roster.
But in Thursday's preseason opener, the results didn't look much different.
The **** ans played starters in their first preseason game while the San Francisco 49ers sat just about everyone of note. Ward helped lead a touchdown drive to start the game but struggled with accuracy. He went 5 of 12 for 57 yards. He almost threw an interception across the middle but it was dropped. It might not have been a big deal — it was just a few drives in a preseason opener while running a new offense, after all — but it happening against the 49ers' backups isn't great. Especially after Ward's rookie struggles.
Saleh said he wasn't worried. However, it wasn't the outing that will make **** ans fans feel confident heading into an important season.

Aug. 14 (UPI) -- San Francisco will host the 2028 MLB All-Star Game, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday.
The San Francisco Giants last hosted the Midsummer Classic in 2007 at AT&T Stadium, now known as Oracle Park, on the coast of San Francisco Bay.
"With its passionate fanbase, world-class ballpark, and rich baseball history, San Francisco will be an outstanding host for All-Star Week, which culminates in one of Major League Baseball's best traditions, the Midsummer Classic," Manfred said in a statement.
The annual matchup between the American League and National League also was held in San Francisco in 1961 and 1984.
The 2027 MLB All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs.

Jackson Jobe has already completed the emotional part of his comeback. He returned to a major league mound, trusted his rebuilt right elbow and shut down the San Francisco Giants for five innings.
Now comes something different.
When Jobe takes the mound Friday night at Comerica Park, he will not be making a ceremonial appearance for a rebuilding club. The Detroit Tigers need him to perform against the team sitting directly above them in the American League Central.
This return comes with pressure, opportunity and a ballpark full of Detroit fans waiting to welcome him home.
Jobe could hardly have scripted a better season debut.

The chance for McCarthy to lead his hometown team brought the first-year Pittsburgh Steelers coach to tears when he was hired in January. The image last April of Heidenreich walking onto the draft stage in full Naval dress uniform outside Acrisure Stadium — just a few miles from the Mount Lebanon neighborhood where he grew up — felt like something out of a movie.
Their respective homecomings have provided plenty of "fairy tale" narratives during an eventful offseason for the typically low-key Steelers. And while there will be a little bit of "hey, is this really happening?" on Thursday night when they walk onto the field for the first time as the Steelers host Green Bay in the preseason opener, they're both aware of the reality check that awaits under the lights.

Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua didn't hesitate when asked who gives him the most trouble on defense. Nacua quickly touted San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner as the most difficult defender to face when he runs routes in the middle of the field.
Nacua explained why Warner is the one defender he genuinely dreads seeing across from him on Sundays during an episode of Impaulsive.
"He's the best," Nacua said. "Everybody's really obviously so good in the NFL. There's ***** ody that covers that much ***** e. It's scary. The middle of the field is terrible. We'll run routes and I won't catch the ball and he's standing right there and he's like, 'I knew exactly where you're going.'"
Nacua said Warner's range makes it feel like the All-Pro linebacker is teleporting across the field mid-play.

The San Francisco Giants got four runs Tuesday night, which was enough to defeat the Houston Astros, 4-1, after 7 2/3 innings from a pair of magnificent Carsons. Winning a close game where the Giants ran the bases opportunistically and the other team committed a bunch of errors? That's some weird, wild stuff.
Carson Whisenhunt had a rough start, letting six of the first nine Astros he faced reach base. But he escaped and eventually earned his third win of the season after giving up just one run in 5.2 innings. Then Carson Seymour came through with two shutout innings of relief, yielding only a single to "Late Night" LaMonte Wade, Jr.
It was a different sort of game for the Giants, who continued their hard-luck ways Monday when Andrew Susac fouled a ball off leg and fractured his kneecap, which will keep him off the field and off his scooter for the foreseeable future. But Tuesday, the breaks started to go their way.

The San Francisco Giants got four runs Tuesday night, which was enough to defeat the Houston Astros, 4-1, after 7 2/3 innings from a pair of magnificent Carsons. Winning a close game where the Giants ran the bases opportunistically and the other team committed a bunch of errors? That's some weird, wild stuff.
Carson Whisenhunt had a rough start, letting six of the first nine Astros he faced reach base. But he escaped and eventually earned his third win of the season after giving up just one run in 5.2 innings. Then Carson Seymour came through with two shutout innings of relief, yielding only a single to "Late Night" LaMonte Wade, Jr.
It was a different sort of game for the Giants, who continued their hard-luck ways Monday when Andrew Susac fouled a ball off leg and fractured his kneecap, which will keep him off the field and off his scooter for the foreseeable future. But Tuesday, the breaks started to go their way.

It was a costly night in the bay. Not only would Houston lose by a score of 4-1, but they'd also witness an early exit from Jose Altuve who was hit in the left foot on an errant pitch from Carson Whisenhunt during his first AB. Nick Allen would replace Altuve as a result. It's officially being listed as a left foot contusion.
Whisenhunt labored early on. In the opening two innings alone, he'd toss 55 pitches. During that stretch, the Astros would strand a total of five baserunners. The lone score was a sac fly from Yordan Alvarez, which was his 87th RBI of the season. Aside from that run, the only other things that went right on this night were the Rangers and Mariners each losing and failing to gain ground.
Hunter Brown would give up that aforementioned lead moments later. Rafael Devers led off the bottom of the second with a walk. Devers proceeded to take second, and on a Drew Gilbert single, he'd score to tie things at 1. San Francisco would add a run in the bottom of the fourth. Gilbert once again was at the center of things, as he'd draw a walk and eventually come around to score on Drew Cavanaugh's single to center field. That made the score 2-1.
After initially being on the ropes, Whisenhunt would settle down and cruise through the next three innings. At one point, he'd retire 11 in a row. For the night, he'd allow 4 hits, issue 3 walks and strike out a pair while surrendering one run.
Hunter Brown would go five innings. In his final inning of work, Bryce Eldridge would take him deep with a solo blast to center field. Brown issued 3 walks and only managed a total of six swing and misses against Giants hitters. De Los Santos lasted mere minutes in relief of Brown. With two outs in the 6th, Cavanaugh reached on a single and scored on a double from Christian Koss. That made the score 4-1 and that would be your final.
