OKEECHOBEE — Undermanned while facing a larger school, the St. Edward's High School football team had just enough gas left in the tank to cross the finish line.
The Pirates enjoyed a 30-6 advantage against Okeechobee with a little more than 10 minutes remaining before the host Brahmans made a charge, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. However, the visitors were able to exhale as time expired following the home team's final trip into the end zone.
St. Edward's ended a three-game losing streak after outlasting Okeechobee 30-24 in an SSAA battle Friday night at Okeechobee High School.
"Our boys usually rise to the occasion, and they did tonight," Pirates head coach Rich Schofield said. "Hats off to Okeechobee. ... They pushed and pushed us right to the very end, but we were able to hold on. That really shows the growth we're looking for."

The Los Angeles Rams time in Melbourne, Australia was short-lived and that might be for the best as LA suffered a 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night (Friday morning for others). Some might question the Rams decision to fly in the day before the game, although that did not seem to be a significant influence on the outcome in my opinion. Why did the Rams lose? Well here are 4 takeaways from Los Angeles's week one loss to their division rivals.
After picking off a Brock Purdy pass, Stafford turned the ball back over to the San Francisco 49ers on 3rd & 10 from the SF 35. Instead of taking his underneath option (Terrance Ferguson), Stafford tried to force a pass on a deep corner to Puka Nacua. The ball was underthrown; giving SF momentum and taking 3 points off the board for LA. Had the Rams kicked the field goal on 4th down, they would have had a 10-3 lead.
The other self-inflicted mistake was the turnover on downs with 3:46 left in the 3rd quarter. The Rams could not punch the ball in the endzone from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th & Goal (all within the 3 yard line). The latter being 4th & 1/2 yard. Those are simply must-have situations when down 10.
The Rams allowed 30 rushing attempts for 174 yards (5.8 yards per carry). The Rams won't beat a Kyle Shanahan offense with that type of formula. No, it wasn't because Aaron Donald was inactive. The Rams simply did not win the trenches getting pushed off the ball. Chris Shula will need to take a deep look at how to counter the 49ers usage of chips on his edge players as Myles Garrett was a non-factor in rushing the passer but also in defending the run.
The Rams offense was one of the best in 2025 because they were constantly in favorable down & distances. In this game against the 49ers, their 3rd down distances were: 5 yards, 2 yards, 6 yards, 10 yards, 13 yards, 1 yard, 2 yards, 15 yards, and 10 yards. The only true conversion was on 3rd & 2 via a Kyren Williams run. The other conversion was via defensive pass interference call late in the game.

The Iowa football program has always prided itself on a strong running game led by a tough offensive line and gritty backs. Even though football has evolved into more of a passing sport, Kirk Ferentz hasn't forgotten the fundamentals of what he's built his program on.
That was evident in the Hawkeyes' 2026 season opener on Saturday.
Iowa established the run game early and often in its 40-0 win over Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes finished the game with 38 carries for 289 yards, averaging 7.6 yards per carry. They also had two rushing touchdowns, which both came in the first quarter courtesy of fourth-year running back Kamari Moulton.
Moulton opened 2026 with a 50-yard score behind pristine blocking from the offensive line. A few minutes later, he added a 37-yard touchdown run to his ledger, once again following some fantastic blocks. By the time the first quarter came to an end, Moulton had already rushed for over 130 yards.

The San Francisco 49ers have their 2026 team captains. The same list as 2025. During his Sunday press conference in preparation for the 49ers' Thursday game against the Los Angeles Rams, Kyle Shanahan gave the list of team captains:

As said above, if that list seems familiar, that's because it's the same list as last season. The 49ers vote on who makes it as a captain, so this means the leadership pecking order in the locker room remains unchanged.
The 49ers are a very talented roster, but the fact that the list remains the same as a year ago, with no new faces, probably won't help the criticisms that the team is too "old." The 'newest' name on this list is Lenoir, whose ascension last year essentially filled the vacancy left by Deebo Samuel.
While we can debate the roster's age all we want, established veterans doing the heavy lifting means they have capable leadership. Hopefully Bosa can stay on the field to help the defensive line turn a corner. The same goes for Brock Purdy and George Kittle. With a rookie De'Zhaun Stribling impressing in the preseason, having Purdy and Kittle to look up to will be invaluable.

SANDY, Utah -- For a team that has spent much of the season being defined by its defense, LAFC is finding that its biggest problem at the wrong time of the year may be keeping the ball out of its own net.
The Black & Gold had another chance Saturday to turn its position near the top of the Western Conference into some breathing room. Instead, a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake at America First Field extended LAFC's winless run to five MLS matches, leaving a team that is still sitting third in the West wondering how many more points it can afford to leave behind.
Marc Dos Santos knew the match was going to open up. LAFC's three-man back line was designed in part to take advantage of RSL's struggles in transition, and for stretches, it worked exactly as intended. The problem was what happened when LAFC had to defend those same open **** es.
"Sometimes the game was a little bit too open," Dos Santos said. "It benefited us more than in the offensive phase, but it was sometimes difficult in the defensive phase that we have to be more compact at moments."
That lack of compactness showed up early.

This is obviously a huge year for the Kansas City Chiefs. They're trying to come back for a season where they didn't even make the playoffs. That's just not like them, but it happens.
The good news is that quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been rehabbing from his ACL and LCL tear, and should be able to help take this team to where it's used to being: on top. But, he can't do it alone. Sure, it's great for a quarterback to have offensive targets around him to toss to in the heat of the moment, but he needs a good defense, too, to hold points from the other team.
On Friday, Ben Solak of ESPN released a feature with the X-factor for each NFL team going into the new season. For the Chiefs, it's cornerback Nohl Williams.
"Williams isn't just tight in coverage, but he also creates on the ball," Solak says of his abilities, adding that 20% of the player's targets "ended in a pass defensed or interception, well above the league average for outside corners" of 14.3%. He says that this is "compelling evidence that Williams isn't just a sufficient corner, but an impactful one."

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Fox Sports ****** yst Mark Sanchez plans to plead guilty to charges ahead of a trial stemming from an October 2025 fight with a truck driver outside an Indianapolis hotel, according to court records filed Thursday.
A motion asks for a guilty plea and sentencing hearing for Sanchez in Marion County Superior Court. Online records didn't indicate which charges Sanchez plans to plead guilty to.
Sanchez faces a felony battery charge, along with three misdemeanor charges, for what prosecutors have said was a fight over parking.
The ex-NFL quarterback's jury trial was scheduled to start Tuesday. The trial had been rescheduled five times since it was initially set to begin in December. Sanchez and Fox Sports also face a civil lawsuit filed by the truck driver, Perry Tole.
A police affidavit alleges that Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, accosted Tole, who had backed his truck into a hotel's loading docks in downtown Indianapolis. Tole claims in his lawsuit that Sanchez entered the truck without permission, then physically blocked and shoved Tole, who then doused Sanchez with pepper spray.

Following his first mini-camp with his new Lakers teammates, star point guard Luka Doncic is feeling good about the future. While there is still a lot of work ahead for his team, the vibes are overall positive heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
Even so, the Lakers may not be done changing and tweaking the roster. According to the latest intel, veteran big man Dwight Powell is the best choice remaining in free agency, and he's reportedly being considered as a final addition to the Purple and Gold.
"The most significant option for the Lakers could be Dwight Powell, the 6-10, 35-year-old big man who was teammates with Doncic for 6 ½ seasons in Dallas," wrote Khobi Price. "Notably, Powell has played the most games as a teammate alongside Doncic (389) among the 98 players Doncic has played alongside in his eight-year NBA career."
The Lakers have been considering another move for a while now, but they don't have many **** ets to spare. That's why, at this point, the free agent market is the best place where they can find their ideal role player on a minimum salary.
With 16 total players on the roster, the Lakers would need to make room to add Powell, but there are several ways they could do it without breaking up their current core. One option is to straight up release players like Dalton Knecht or Bronny James. Alternatively, they could trade for someone like Jaden Hardy and/or Jake LaRavia in exchange for picks. The question is, is Powell the right man to pursue?

ATLANTA — Ryan Gerard hit it well enough for five relatively easy birdies Friday and dropped a surprise from just inside 80 feet for another, giving him a 5-under 65 and a share of the 36-hole lead with Viktor Hovland at the season-ending Tour Championship.
Hovland had one of five birdies on the peninsula-green 15th hole, a par 3 at only 155 yards but tucked to the left near a sharp slope that feeds off the putting surface. He had a 66 to join Gerard at 10-under 130 going into the weekend.
Right behind? Just about everybody.
That includes Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player who had a 67 and was two back. And it included Cameron Young, in last place after the first round and atop the leaderboard for much of the day after a 62. He also wound up two behind.
Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup each shot 67 and were one behind at 9-under 131.

One of the most exciting players in the Juventus Next Gen team right now is Adin Licina, and he appears to be getting closer to breaking into Luciano Spalletti's first team. In recent times, players such as Kenan Yildiz and Fabio Miretti have progressed through the club's ranks and earned opportunities with the senior side, with more young players expected to follow.
Juventus have one of the best youth setups in Italian football, so the progression of young talents is not surprising. The Bianconeri have invested heavily in that area of the club, creating opportunities for promising players to develop and potentially reach the first team.
Licina and Yildiz are good friends, and both players arrived at Juventus after spells in the youth system of Bayern Munich. Licina has so far demonstrated that he could prove to be another impressive signing from the German club.
However, he could struggle to play regularly for Juventus' first team at this stage of his development, and Napoli are now showing interest in the midfielder. Chelsea and Real Sociedad have reached an agreement over Mamadou Sarr's (20) loan move to the Basque side, according to Foot Mercato. The Senegalese international centre-back's loan move includes no option to buy. Sarr joined Chelsea from BlueCo-owned Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg in a €14m deal in the 2025 summer transfer window. Sarr was then allowed to spend the following campaign on loan at Strasbourg, until Chelsea recalled him in February.
Sarr only featured seven times for the Blues. The former Olympique Lyonnais Academy graduate has been allowed to leave Xabi Alonso's Chelsea side this summer with the Blues recruiting Maxence Lacroix from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace FC. Foot Mercato understands that Alonso, a former Real Sociedad midfielder, has proved instrumental in convincing Sarr to join the Basque side.

Michael Thorbjornsen didn't want to be left behind.
The 24-year-old has been a PGA Tour pro for more than two years, but last month he had one of the biggest eye-opening moments of his career. Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old phenom, won in his third professional start, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to take the trophy at the 3M Open. For a majority of the PGA Tour, it was a reminder that the young kids are good, and they're coming for the top.
For Thorbjornsen, it was a wake-up call.
"Comparison is a thief of joy, but it has helped me and hurt me at times when I see other people having success and doing well when I know I can compete with them," Thorbjornsen said. "When Koivun won, that was a big motivating factor."
Thorbjornsen and Koivun are both graduates of PGA Tour University, a program designed to give the top collegiate players direct access to the PGA Tour. PGA Tour U started as an idea on a sheet of paper back in 2018. Now, it has become one of the most essential pipelines to the Tour, and in recent weeks has shown it belongs even in the new professional golf ecosystem with numerous victories from alums.

In a recent report, A Bola stated that Sunderland have to improve on their offer to land Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats have to launch an offer close to the Mozambique wide player's £52m release clause to land him in this transfer window.
Catamo enjoyed a good run of form at the Portuguese club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of productive displays for them in the final third. The Mozambique international scored eight times and earned five ******* ists in 47 matches for Sporting last season across all fronts.
The 25-year-old is currently among the most talented wide players in Liga Portugal. Hence, the Black Cats would do well to get him on board this off-season.
His current contract at Sporting will expire in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for Sunderland to sign him on a cut-price deal in this transfer period.

England white-ball captain Harry Brook has spoken about the criticism he received during his only Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, saying he was caught up in scrutiny on social media.

Brook scored 190 runs in the 2023 season despite making a century against Kolkata Knight Riders. His form dropped after that innings, and he came under pressure over his performances.

Looking back at that period, Brook said the attention around his IPL campaign affected him both on and off the field.

"I got into a little bit of a rabbit hole with scrutiny and social media when I was at the IPL," Brook told BBC Sport. "It didn't help me as a person on the field or off the field. I decided to, not stay away from social media, but also not go out of my way to look at it."

Brook said he now tries to view criticism differently, arguing that scrutiny can also show that people care about his performances.

"On the other hand, I actually feel it's a little bit of a compliment if people are giving me scrutiny and have an opinion about my game. I know it's not a nice thing to see people slagging you off, but it means people care and people think I can put in a better performance than I have done that day," he said.

Before his century against KKR, Brook had been criticised for his performances and said he was pleased to "shut up" supporters who were "slagging me off".

Brook has not returned to the IPL since that 2023 season. He was released by SRH before Delhi Capitals signed him for Rs 4 crore in 2024. He then withdrew from the 2024 season following the death of his grandmother.

DC bought Brook again for Rs 6.25 crore at the 2025 mega auction, but he pulled out of the tournament to prioritise his international commitments.

Brook was subsequently handed a two-year IPL ban under the BCCI's rules. He is eligible to return to the league at the 2028 mega auction.

As anticipation around the WNBA builds for the upcoming playoffs, the league continues to navigate controversy surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in women's sports.
With the league's stance on the issue entering the forefront, a notable pundit revealed why he believes the league is in bad shape.
While discussing the issue on Fox News, Outkick pundit Clay Travis called out the WNBA for having what he considers vague guidelines regarding transgender athletes entering the league. Travis said "All they have to do is adapt the same standards as the Women's Tennis **** ociation, the NCAA, the Olympics, and test one time that it's all women."
Travis added "The G League, which is the minor league of the NBA, the average player makes $45,000 a year. The average WNBA player makes $500,000 a year. There's a lot of people watching us right now that would say I identify as a man or woman if identifying as a different gender got you 10 times the salary? This is why the WNBA is in crisis."
Travis believes there are financial incentives for others to follow in the footsteps of former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White, who announced they are declaring for next year's WNBA Draft. Travis would like the WNBA to follow the testing guidelines of other sports to ensure that only biological women are playing in the league.

Round 1 went to Deshaun Watson.
The Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation remains fluid, and Shedeur Sanders will get the start in Week 2 of the preseason, but Watson was the better of the two quarterbacks on Saturday against the Chicago Bears.
In his first game action since October 2024, Watson had an up-and-down day overall against some of Chicago's starters, leading two scoring drives but struggling more when the Bears' pressure ramped up. Sanders faced mostly Bears backups and didn't do enough to change his standing, with his afternoon ending with an interception.
Watson earned the start against the Bears and played the first half, settling in nicely after a slow start. After a three-and-out – three straight runs – to start the game, Watson got comfortable with a battery of short, accurate passes, leading to a Browns field goal.
On Cleveland's third series, Watson hit all four of his pass attempts, including a 43-yard screen to Dylan Sampson, and converted a fourth-down QB sneak. Rookie WR KC Concepcion took an end around 14 yards for a touchdown and a 10-0 Browns lead.

Jets QB Geno Smith did not play in the team's first preseason game on Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with what the team is calling a sore ankle.
Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that it happened in the team's last joint practice with the Bucs earlier this week.
"Nothing to be alarmed about. It'll be day-to-day," Glenn said after the Jets' 24-16 loss. "Thursday, I told him he wasn't going to play… Precautionary."
The Jets are not too concerned about the injury and it was something that would not have kept Smith out if Friday's game was in the regular season.
Fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik started the game with the starters and played a couple of series. He finished 5 of 7 for 56 yards and took a sack.
