It's really something to see a true one-of-one. The first time it really stuck, it really happened to me, was Usain Bolt in 2008 in Beijing. With all due respect to what Michael Phelps did in those Olympics, there's something primal about the 100m dash, something we've been doing as a species since Urk bragged to Gru he could get to that rock over there first. It was quite something for 14-year-old Joshua to see the seven fastest men in the world three steps behind this freak — and I say that with the utmost admiration.
Of course Bolt did that two more times in those Games, then broke his own record at the World Championships in Berlin a year later—still the fastest time ever recorded—and then in London, and just for good measure took home the gold in the 100m and 200m in Rio in 2016. The greatest sprinter of all time and a 100th-percentile outcome for what the human body can be. Bolt went out with a whimper though, pulling up lame in the 4x100m relay final at the 2017 World Championships. A hamstring injury mid-race spelled the end of one of sports' great, fiery comets.
You almost never get to go out on your own terms, especially in athletics. Eventually, your body—the thing that earned you a living, the thing that elevated you over pretty much the entire global population—lets you down. Giancarlo Stanton is also a true one-of-one. You could make a compelling argument that ****** ody in the history of baseball has boasted his raw power. Perhaps ****** ody in the sport has ever had so many home runs where the defenders simply didn't move upon contact:
View Link
And of course, like A-Rod in 2009, there's a very good chance the Yankees don't even make the World Series in '24 if Stanton doesn't hammer the ball like he can. Cleveland in particular had no answer whatsoever to the ALCS MVP, who showered Guardians pitching with four clutch homers. He had a 1.048 OPS that postseason and likely walks away with 18 career playoff homers and a .926 OPS in 202 plate appearances.

Amy Hunt's expression was equal parts joy and amazement as she crossed the line for the last time at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium, before holding up four fingers to the camera as the realisation of what she had achieved dawned on her.
The 24-year-old made history as the first to win four golds in the 92-year history of the European Championships, completing the individual 100m and 200m double before winning both the women's 4x100m relay and the experimental new mixed 4x100m relay.
The latter two victories came alongside Dina Asher-Smith, newly crowned the most decorated athlete of all time at European level. The first two wins were against her – the baton (literally) passing from one British sprinting great to who it is hoped will be the next.
Hunt made no secret of her drive to win that unprecedented set of four golds, freely saying "I'm looking to be iconic" before her bid for history. She is a charismatic and engaging personality, a sprinter with a tendency towards the showmanlike, roaring "Are you not entertained?" in glee as she sealed the individual sprint double.
That showmanship is offset by a fierce work ethic, evident in her first-class degree from Cambridge as much as in her work on the track. She said this week: "I'm just so proud of myself and the way I've handled this week – the emotions, the recovery and being strict and staying disciplined after all the highs. I've stayed true to myself and true to the job I came out here to do."

Amy Hunt became the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single European Championships after Great Britain triumphed in the mixed 4x100m relay at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
The British quartet of Jeremiah Azu, Dina Asher-Smith, Zharnel Hughes and Hunt, running in lane four, crossed the finish in a European record 39.97 seconds to beat silver medallists Germany, who finished in 40.11s, and third placed Spain.
Asher-Smith also moved to the outright top of the European Athletics Championships all-time list – for both men and women – with her 11th medal, surpassing Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska's 10 with her third this week.
That already took her to seven European golds, two more than Szewinska, but she is now the lone athlete at 11 with eight.
The mixed 4×100 relay made its European championships in Birmingham, making it possible for the ambitious Hunt to set her sights on the unprecedented quadruple and Asher-Smith to write more history.

Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith made history as Great Britain maintained their bid to top the final medal table with mixed 4x100m relay gold at the European Championships.
Sprint sensation Hunt held up four fingers to the camera after holding off Germany's challenge on the home straight as another sell-out crowd roared the 24-year-old on to an unprecedented fourth gold of the week.
The world silver medallist completed victory for the quartet in a European record 39.97 seconds to add to her triumphs in the 100m, 200m and women's 4x100m in Birmingham.
With her eighth gold and 11th medal overall, Asher-Smith is unparalleled as the most successful athlete in the competition's 92-year history, with a team also featuring Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes extending the hosts' domination of the sprint events.
It was Great Britain's eighth gold medal, drawing them level with Italy at the top of the standings - and the team's 15th overall.

Amy Hunt studied English Literature at Cambridge but clearly prefers making history in her spare time. In 90 years of the European Championships, no athlete has ever won four gold medals at a single edition — but Hunt is now just one winning race away.
After completing a stunning sprint double in the 100m and 200m, Hunt joined forces with Dina Asher-Smith, Success Eduan and Imani-Lara Lansiquot to storm to 4x100m gold at the Alexander Stadium in 42.05 seconds, the fastest time in Europe this season.
"I'm having the time of my life," said Hunt. "I'm standing next to some amazing women — Dina wins these medals for fun, Success delivers babies for a living and Imani wrote a play. They are just special and talented people.
"This week has been a whirlwind and it's not finished yet. I think next week the emotions are going to hit me and I'll be crying every day."
Tears can wait and, regardless of what happens in Sunday's 4x100m mixed relay, Hunt is the story of these championships. But she was not the story of this night.

Amy Hunt hailed her British quartet of "superwomen" after they successfully defended their European 4x100m relay **** le to keep Hunt on course for an historic quadruple in Birmingham on a night of back-to-back triumphs for the hosts.
Dina Asher-Smith moved joint-top of the all-time European Athletics Championships medal table with 10, the same as Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska – though the Briton has two more golds with seven and a chance, alongside Hunt, to add another from Sunday's inaugural European mixed 4x100m relay.
Asher-Smith, Hunt, Success Eduan and Imani-Lara Lansiquot blitzed to the finish in 42.05 seconds ahead of Switzerland, who took silver in 43.12s, and bronze went to Poland in 43.15 seconds.
Hunt, who sealed a European sprint double earlier in the week, when asked about the possibility of becoming the first British athlete to win four golds in a single European Championships, said: "Hopefully! We'll have to chat to the coaches about tomorrow, but I'm so, so happy for tonight.
"It was incredible to come together with these so inspiring ladies. Everyone had so much going on. We got a midwifery degree, psychology degree, history degree, and this girl (Lansiquot) wrote a play.

Kate Douglass shattered the women's 50m freestyle world record on Saturday, clocking 23.49sec in the heats at the Pan Pacific Championships to set a tantalizing showdown with former record-holder Gretchen Walsh.
Douglass improved on the world mark of 23.55sec that fellow-American Walsh set on June 28 at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome.
Walsh's mark had improved on the world record of 23.59 that Douglass herself had set on June 19 -- and Douglass said that she believed she could still improve technically.
"I definitely wasn't expecting that," Douglass told Swimming World magazine. "I still think there are things I could clean up."
Douglass's impressive performance came little more than 12 hours after she delivered the second-fastest 100m freestyle in history swimming the lead-off leg on the United States's victorious 4x100m free relay.

Amy Hunt recovered from her typically slow start and blitzed the field to take women's 100m glory at the European Athletics Championships. The delight on her face shortly after she crossed the line in precisely 11 seconds, and as she did laps of honour around Birmingham's Alexander Stadium, proved just how much a first senior individual gold medal meant to the 24-year-old.
Add it to the silver medal at last month's Commonwealth Games, the shock silver over 200m at last year's World Championship and a slew of relay medals – including Olympic silver in the 4x100m at Paris 2024 – and the University of Cambridge graduate is cementing herself as a star of British athletics.
Hunt has an engaging personality and natural charisma, a willingness to speak her mind on a number of topics and, most importantly, is really, really, really fast, with an ability to deliver on the biggest stage. She is incredibly marketable and getting the crowds through the door to watch her go head to head with fellow British stars Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita for continental gold should have been an easy sell.

She is incredibly marketable and getting the crowds through the door to watch her go head to head with fellow British stars Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita for continental gold should have been an easy sell.

Barely two years after he first stepped on to a sprinting track, Gloucestershire teenager James Arminio will compete for Great Britain at this week's Under-20 World Championships in Oregon.
The 18-year-old, who is due to collect his A-Level results when he returns from the USA, is competing in the 4x100m relay and 100m.
"It's all happened really quickly so it's been a lot to take on whilst juggling A-Levels at the same time," Arminio told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
"But I still have so much more to learn, I'm still new to the sport, I'm nowhere near where I need to be in terms of what I've learned. There's still much more improvement there, so much more gains to make."
It was only when Arminio started sixth form in 2024 he first got a taste of athletics, having previously played football which he says he "never took too seriously".

Chad le Clos says his apartment in South Africa was destroyed by a fatal fire - the night after the swimmer became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history.
Le Clos picked up his 21st medal to overtake Australia's Emma McKeon as the athlete with the most medals in Commonwealths history, when South Africa took bronze in the men's 4x100m medley relay in Glasgow last week.
It was the 34-year-old's third medal of the 2026 Games, having won silver in the mixed 4x100 medley and bronze in the men's 4x100 freestyle relays.
Only days later, Le Clos has revealed that a fire destroyed his home of more than a decade in Sea Point, Cape Town and killed one of his neighbours.
"It has taken me a while to process this heartbreaking tragedy," the 2012 Olympic gold medallist wrote on Instagram.

The 2025-26 LSU athletics season closes at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, and the Tigers are looking to finish the season strong. From June 10-13, the men’s and women’s track teams will look to rack up enough points to claim a national championship for LSU. The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday, and the women will compete on Thursday and Saturday. The LSU men are looking for their sixth outdoor ****** le and first since 2021, while the women are looking for a record-extending 15th non-vacated ****** le and first since 2008. These will be broadcast across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+.
For those unfamiliar, the track and field championship is determined by a combined points system. Teams do not qualify as combined units. Instead, individual competitors and relay squads from each team qualify out of regionals. Each person or squad is fighting to win a national championship for themselves and points for their team. The national champions score 10 points, the runners-up score 8, and third-eighth score 6-1 points in descending order. It’s possible to score multiple points on one event, and that’s the best chance for LSU to rack up points.
To clear up broadcast info, all field events will be broadcast on ESPN+. On Wednesday, all of LSU’s track events except the 4x400m semifinals will be broadcast on ESPN. The rest of the championship will be broadcast on ESPN2 for both the men and the women. To save ****** e, here is a link to the full schedule of all four days. Add two hours to each time listed since those times are in Pacific.
The men have 11 points-scoring opportunities. At 7:05, the #12 seed 4x100m relay team of Jeremiah Walker, Jaiden Reid, Shakeem McKay, Joshua Caleb and alternate Jordan Turner will run their semifinal race. An hour later, #13 seed Matthew Sophia will run in the second heat of the 110m hurdles. Before LSU’s next runner steps on the track, the javelin finals start about a half hour after Sophia runs. #13 Jack Larriviere will be throwing in the second flight. All field finals are split into two sections. Field athletes have to be in the top nine at the cut-off to advance to the points-scoring round.
During the javelin finals, #10 Jaiden Reid will run in the third heat of the 100m dash. The long jump finals begin around the same time as the 400m heats, and #7 Jordan Turner will be jumping in flight two. LSU has a runner in all three 400m heats. #12 Malachi Austin will run first, then #11 Grant Buckmiller, and then finally #14 Amal Glasgow. About an hour later, the 200m heats start, and #2 Jaiden Reid will be in heat three.
