Supporters poured out of Guadalajara's Estadio Akron waving flags and singing after the final whistle, while thousands gathered at fan zones in Monterrey and Mexico City. The win guarantees Mexico a place in the last 32 and confirms the hosts as Group A leaders with six points from two matches, an important milestone for a team playing in front of home crowds.
The decisive moment came in the 50th minute when midfielder Luis Romo capitalised on a defensive mistake involving South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and defender Lee Gi-hyuk. Romo calmly converted into an empty net to score the only goal of the match. South Korea nearly levelled in the 87th minute, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a crucial save to preserve the lead.
The qualification marks a significant turnaround for Mexico after its group-stage exit in 2022. With one match remaining against the Czech Republic in Mexico City, supporters are increasingly hopeful the national team can enjoy its strongest World Cup campaign in decades.

The United States and Australia will look to book their place in the World Cup knockout rounds on Friday while Brazil aim to kickstart their campaign against Haiti.
After tournament co-hosts Mexico sealed their place in the last 32 on Thursday with a 1-0 victory over South Korea, the USA or the Socceroos can join them with a victory in their Group D game in Seattle.
After an unconvincing build-up, the Americans made a flying start to the World Cup last week with a stylish 4-1 demolition of Paraguay in Los Angeles.
That result has left Mauricio Pochettino's USA team brimming with confidence and the country getting behind them as they prepare for the showdown with the Socceroos in the Pacific Northwest.
Australia are also approaching the USA clash in buoyant mood after their stunning 2-0 upset of Turkey on Saturday.

The night of the 2026 World Cup delivers two major verdicts. Canada claim the first World Cup win in their history by crushing Qatar, while Mexico become the first team to qualify for the round of 32 thanks to their victory over South Korea. Jonathan David and Luis Romo were the standout stars, but the images destined to stick in the memory are also those of Ismaël Koné’s terrible injury and South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu’s shocking blunder.

A perfect evening, but only in part, for Jesse Marsch’s Canada. After their 1-1 draw in the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Canadians thrashed Qatar 6-0 in front of the Vancouver crowd and earned the first World Cup win in their history. A result that sends them to the top of Group B and leaves them needing only a draw against Switzerland in the final matchday to qualify.
Leading the hosts was a rampant Jonathan David. The Juventus striker grabbed a hat-trick, reached 42 goals in 79 appearances for the national team, and moved level at the top of the tournament’s scoring charts. First he took part in the move for Cyle Larin’s 1-0, then he made it 2-0 with a right-footed volley, and in the second half he completed his show with two more goals. It was a historic night for him: he is only the second Juventus player to score a World Cup hat-trick after Paolo Rossi.

It should have been a moment of pure joy.
Canada, 40 years after playing in their first World Cup, secured their first-ever win at the tournament in emphatic fashion, thrashing Qatar 6-0 in front of a packed and loud Vancouver Stadium.
They are almost certain of a place in the last 32. But celebrations were overshadowed by a dreadful injury to Ismael Kone.
The incident happened eight minutes into the second half, with Canada leading 3-0. Their former Watford midfielder Kone, shortly after receiving the ball, was caught late and badly by ******* im Madibo as he challenged for possession.
Kone's reaction, and that of the players around him, said it all.

Manchester United remain desperate to offload Marcus Rashford this summer as INEOS target a midfield overhaul and seek reinforcements out wide.
Getting the Mancunian’s £325,000-a-week wages off the books would be a huge help, while his sale would count as pure profit owing to his academy background.
This would enable the Red Devils to sign one of Crysencio Summerville, Iliman Ndiaye or Yan Diomande to play out wide on the left.
United had expected Barcelona to trigger the Englishman’s £26 million buy option, considering his impressive form while out on loan.
However, with the Catalans dilly-dallying and now requesting another loan, INEOS have become fed up and are eyeing a sale elsewhere, as they feel they can get better value from another club.

We just covered Billionaire Dan Loeb Pivots to AI and Sells Old Economy Stocks: His Top 7 AI Picks. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) ranks #3 (see Billionaire Dan Loeb's Top 5 AI Stock Picks).
Billionaire Dan Loeb's Stake: 175,000 Shares Valued at Approximately $50.32 Million (NEW position)
Billionaire Dan Loeb piled into Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) in the first quarter and that bet proved to be profitable. The stock is up 17% so far this year.
Loeb isn't alone in turning bullish on Google. For the past two years, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) was widely considered the biggest loser of the AI revolution, because AI directly threatened its bread and ***** er — search. Why would anyone use Google Search when ChatGPT or Claude could just answer your question directly? But Alphabet turned the tables, embraced AI aggressively, and is now one of the clearest beneficiaries of the very trend that was supposed to destroy it. Its AI products and Google Cloud have become its biggest growth catalysts.
The cloud numbers tell the story. In Q1 2026, Google Cloud's contracted backlog surged 93% on a sequential basis to $462.3 billion. These are not forecasts or wishful projections — these are signed contracts from enterprise customers who have already committed to paying Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL). The company says roughly 50% of this backlog, or over $230 billion, is expected to convert into recognized revenue within the next 24 months. On top of that, Google Cloud grew 63% year-over-year in Q1 — significantly ahead of Microsoft Azure at 40% and Amazon Web Services at 28%. Google Cloud is simultaneously the third-largest cloud provider and the fastest-growing one, and management has explicitly said revenue would have been even higher if the company could physically build infrastructure fast enough to meet demand.

Sustainable Growth Advisers (SGA), an investment management company, released its first-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Global Growth Strategy." A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The SGA Global Growth Portfolio returned -13.6% (Gross) and -13.8% (Net) compared to the MSCI ACWI return of -3.2% and the MSCI ACWI Growth return of -7.7%. AI disruption narratives significantly affected markets in the first two months of the quarter, leading to declines in software, information services, payments, and insurance brokers. In March, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East caused a spike in oil prices, contributing to market volatility and prompting investors to adopt a more cautious stance. The firm believes prioritizing high-quality businesses with strong balance sheets, durable cash flows, and diversified end markets provides resilience against short-term geopolitical shocks. In addition, you can check the Strategy's top 5 holdings for its best picks for 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, SGA Global Growth Strategy highlighted HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB). HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) is a leading private sector bank in India that provides banking and financial products and services. On June 16, 2026, HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) closed at $25.27 per share. One-month return of HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) was 2.60%, and its shares lost 32.07% over the past 52 weeks. HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) has a market capitalization of $129.7 billion.
SGA Global Growth Strategy stated the following regarding HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"HDFC Bank Limited (NYSE:HDB) was a detractor from performance during the quarter following earnings as deposit growth fell short of market expectations. Sentiment was further pressured by the unexpected resignation of the bank's non-executive chairman, which contributed to elevated volatility despite swift action by regulators and the board to reaffirm confidence and the absence of any material operational, financial, or governance issues. Additional headlines related to legacy compliance matters added to near-term noise, despite appearing isolated and non-systemic in nature. Fundamentally, results were solid with net income up 12% backed by good ****** et quality. Guidance was constructive as management reiterated earnings growth for March and the next fiscal year earnings growth. ****** et quality continues to be strong, cost of funding remains well-controlled, and management has reiterated its focus on improving the loan to deposit ratio. As liquidity conditions in India normalize and merger related disruptions fade, we expect loan growth to reaccelerate, margins to stabilize, and operating leverage to improve. Given HDFC Bank's scale, brand strength, and long history of disciplined execution, we see the recent weakness as sentiment driven, and we continue to view the bank as a high-quality, long-term compounder supporting mid-teen earnings and revenue growth."

In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, SGA Global Growth Strategy highlighted Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) as a notable contributor. Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) is a UK-based technology company that develops and licenses central processing unit designs and related technologies for semiconductor companies and original equipment manufacturers. On June 16, 2026, Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) closed at $396.34 per share. One-month return of Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) was 54.38%, and its shares gained 171.37% over the past 52 weeks. Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) has a market capitalization of $423.322 billion.
SGA Global Growth Strategy stated the following regarding Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:ARM) was a top contributor to returns during the quarter. Shares responded positively following strong fiscal third quarter results, with revenue and royalty growth exceeding expectations, driven by accelerating data center adoption, and rising penetration of Arm's CSS platform in smartphone, automotive, and infrastructure segments. Importantly, management reiterated confidence in sustaining approximately 20% royalty growth longer term, reinforcing the market's confidence in Arm's structural growth profile. While near term concerns around smartphone unit softness due to higher memory costs persisted, company commentary highlighted that Arm's royalty economics are increasingly skewed toward high end devices, where royalties per unit are significantly higher, allowing royalty growth even in a declining unit environment. In parallel, investor focus sharpened on Arm's expanding role in AI, particularly as CPUs take on a critical coordination role in agentic workflows. Growing adoption by hyperscalers, including broader use of Arm CPUs for AI adjacent workloads, reinforced this narrative. These developments reinforced our thesis that Arm is becoming a foundational architecture not only for mobile computing but also for AI drive

Shubman Gill's remarkable purple patch continued on Wednesday as the India captain produced another batting masterclass, prompting high praise from Sunil Gavaskar after India's emphatic ODI series-clinching victory over Afghanistan in Lucknow.
Gill has enjoyed a stunning run of form over the past three weeks, piling up runs across formats and competitions. The 26-year-old began the sequence with a commanding century for Gujarat **** ans against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 before registering his 11th Test hundred in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. He then followed an unbeaten 85 in the rain-affected ODI in Dharamsala with a magnificent 154 in Lucknow as India secured a dominant win.
The latest innings came in challenging conditions and helped set up India's massive total of 402. Gill shared a match-defining 224-run stand with Ishan Kishan, who blasted 125, as the pair completely took the game away from Afghanistan.
Speaking on JioStar's 'Cricket Live' show, Gavaskar said Gill's success with the bat was also having a positive impact on his captaincy.
"When you're not getting runs, you're not confident about making those marginal moves that come from your gut feel, like holding back a bowler who has bowled well, giving him an extra over, or moving a fielder from a certain position. That gut feel is a lot stronger when you're personally performing. But if you're not performing, even when you get a gut feel, you're apprehensive about making that call because you're worried about getting it wrong. Since you're also not performing as a player, you'll be criticised for your captaincy as well," Gavaskar said.
While Gill and Kishan stole the spotlight with the bat, India's young fast bowlers also played a key role in completing the victory. Afghanistan were dismissed for 232, with rookie pacers Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav combining for five wickets.
Gavaskar was particularly impressed by Brar's performance, praising both his bowling rhythm and ability to trouble batters with steep bounce.
"His run-up is so good, his rhythm is so good, he was hitting the deck and getting the ball to climb. The wicket he got of Gurbaz was particularly impressive because of the way that bouncer followed him. It's very accurate. It comes right at you, exactly where the batter does not want it. I think the selection committee deserves all the compliments. If you look at his stats, or his India A performances, they're okay, but not to the extent where you would say he deserved an India cap. However, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, saw something in him, and that's why they picked him. He's also been backed by the management, which is so important,” added the former India captain.
India's all-round display secured a 170-run victory and gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, with Gill's outstanding form continuing to be one of the biggest positives for the team.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda has claimed more than 200 lives in its first month and is the worst known outbreak at this stage, with up to 35,000 suspected potential contacts, Africa’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.
With 894 confirmed cases so far, the current outbreak is three times worse than a previous outbreak in Uganda in 2000, which had 281 cases at the same point, said Dr. Wessam Mankoula, a medical epidemiologist at Africa CDC.
The latest number of cases is believed to be higher because the outbreak was confirmed on May 15, weeks after it was suspected to have begun. The number of cases has increased 38% since last week and is now in 32 health zones across eastern Congo, said Mankoula.
The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccines or treatments and was not tested for in the early days. The more common Zaire virus, for which there is a vaccine, was responsible for most of Congo’s past 16 outbreaks of the disease.
So far 74 patients have recovered from the disease across eastern Congo and Uganda. Experimental treatments like monoclonal antibodies are being developed for Bundibugyo.

Jets urged to sign former Browns, Bills 27.5 sack defensive lineman originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Jets might not be entering the 2026 season as Super Bowl or playoff contenders, but Aaron Glenn is coaching for his job, and needs the team to play better.
To keep his job, the Jets' defense needs to be a lot better than it was last year. While there was plenty of focus on the zero-interception statistic, this Jets defense also needed better production from the defensive line.
While they've added a few players this offseason, ESPN's Aaron Schatz is urging the Jets to sign a former Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills defensive lineman who has 27.5 sacks in his career, Larry Ogunjobi, to bolster the DL depth at a reasonable price tag.
"Sign defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi," Schatz writes. "Ogunjobi would make a good addition to help David Onyemata and Harrison Phillips. The 32-year-old Ogunjobi will come much cheaper than the $8.3 million the Bills paid for half a season of him last year, and he has experience as a 3-4 end."

Four Scotland supporters enjoyed an even more memorable weekend than most in Boston as they became what the Red Sox believe to be the first UK winners of the club's 50/50 raffle.
Two father and son duos, Peter and Paul Innes and John and Ross Henderson, attended the Scotland Celebration night at the iconic Fenway Park the night after Steve Clarke's side defeated Haiti in their opening World Cup match.
They bought a $40 raffle ticket between them on Sunday as the Red Sox faced the Texas Rangers and "after checking the number 250 times" discovered they have won the $21,353.80 (£16,132.90) prize.
"It's just surreal," Paul, who has followed Scotland home and away with his dad for over a decade said. "It's not really sunk in."
Half of the winnings goes to support the Red Sox Foundation, meaning the men from Bonnyrigg were presented with a cheque of $10, 676.90 (£8,066.45) before the Red Sox' match against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann heaped praise on Ishan Kishan after the wicketkeeper-batter's sensational century powered India to a dominant 170-run win over Afghanistan in the second ODI in Lucknow, sealing the three-match series with a game to spare.
Kishan played a stunning knock of 125 from just 79 ******* , striking 14 boundaries and seven sixes. His innings formed the backbone of a massive 224-run third-wicket stand with India captain Shubman Gill, who produced a brilliant 154. Their partnership helped India amass 402 before restricting Afghanistan to 232.
Speaking on JioStar, Swann admired Kishan's team-first attitude and his ability to fit seamlessly into any role required by the side.
“He is the sort of player who will do whatever job you ask of him without any complaints. The fact that he’s come back into the team and looks like he’s never been away is remarkable,” Swann said.
The former England spinner also highlighted the way Kishan paced his innings before shifting gears dramatically. According to Swann, the left-hander showed excellent game awareness rather than relying on reckless strokeplay.
“He came to the crease and was circumspect for his first fifty, but then took just 19 deliveries to go from 50 to 100, which is ridiculous. It wasn’t crazy hitting or slogging either. He was simply being sensible, picking his spots on the leg side, forcing the bowlers to change their lines, and then playing those gorgeous lofted extra-cover drives.”
Swann felt Kishan's transformation reflected the hard work he has put into improving specific areas of his batting.
“It’s a sign of sheer class. That shot, wide of long-off, is something he’s worked on over the last two years. It was an area where bowlers could shut him down, but he went away, worked on it, and turned it into a strength, which is brilliant,” he added.
Kishan brought up his hundred in only 71 deliveries and ensured India's momentum never slowed. Alongside Gill, he dismantled Afghanistan's bowling attack and set up one of India's biggest ODI totals in recent years.
India then completed a comprehensive victory as Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar picked up three wickets each. Rahmat Shah fought hard with 79, but Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 232, handing India an unbeatable 2-0 lead ahead of the final ODI in Chennai.
