Two injured Detroit Tigers pitchers are taking one step closer to returning.
Before Detroit's game against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Sept. 11, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that right-hander Jack Flaherty will throw a simulated game on Saturday, at Comerica Park. Flaherty is expected to pitch 2-3 simulated innings against Tigers batters from the mound before the afternoon game against the Rockies.
Flaherty last pitched competitively for Triple-A Toledo on Sept. 6, allowing one hits and zero runs over 1⅓ innings in a rehab start in Toledo. The righty has been rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation and last pitched in the majors in a start against the Chicago Cubs on July 20.
Hank Greenberg won the World Series with the Detroit Tigers in 1935 and 1945. He's a Hall of Fame slugger and won the American League MVP award twice.

He carried a 4.99 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 113 2/3 innings before the Mets dealt him to Tampa Bay on August 2 for three prospects – Aidan Smith, Gary Gill Hill and Émilien Pitre. All three ranked among Tampa Bay's Top 30 prospects.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The body blows kept coming and the Tigers kept standing. Finally, in the 12th inning, Spencer Torkelson delivered a haymaker.
His 21st home run, a two-run shot into the second deck in left field triggered a five-run outburst, sending the Tigers to a much-needed, series-salvaging, 11-6 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field Wednesday (Sept. 2).
It was Torkelson's first homer since July 29, when he hit an 11th inning walk-off at Comerica Park against the Orioles.
Twins right-hander Tommy Nance unraveled from there. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs on a single, an intentional walk and a hit-batter (John Peck, who took one off the helmet). Javier Baez emptied the bases with a three-run bloop double.
But this was a mettle-tester.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Wednesday that Shohei Ohtani's knee pain after a slide on Tuesday isn't significant enough to keep him off the field, but the accumulating injuries are still having an impact.
Roberts weighed in on Ohtani's health when speaking with Dodgers Nation's Ava Brand and other reporters on Wednesday.

"I know there's times that people talk about him wincing around third base, but everything that he's told me and the training staff, he feels good," Roberts said.

The LA Dodgers lost Game 2 of the three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday night. Detroit won 2-1 on a walk-off hit in the ninth. The victory was backed by spirited pitching from Keider Montero and Andrew Sears, along with contributions from Gleyber Torres and Kevin McGonigle.
During a post-game media interview shared by Spectrum SportsNet, Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez shared his thoughts on the 2-1 loss.
"They've been pitching really good against us," he said. "Everybody's gonna have a little extra when they face this team."
MLB fans quickly shared their reactions to Hernandez's comment.

DETROIT – Javier Báez was asked afterward which was a better catch — the one he made to rob Teoscar Hernandez of a potential tie-breaking extra base hit in the top of the ninth or the one he made just after when his chain broke off his neck.
"The ball is more important in that moment," Báez said with a grin. "But I have both."
Báez, in his own inimitable way, helped the Tigers beat the two-time defending champion Dodgers and even the series with a 2-1 victory Saturday, Aug. 28, in front of another sellout crowd (40,022) at Comerica Park.
"Just a sick play," said rookie Max Clark. "That's prime Javy right there. Then he comes up and hits a double."

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal looked comfortable sitting in the first-base dugout in the stadium he called home for his first seven MLB seasons – minus a few inconveniences that come from playing for the visiting team.
"I've never been on this side of the clubhouse. So when I first got here, I'm like, 'which way is the field?'" he said. "It's much farther down there. There's a lot more steps going on, but I guess it's good for your health."
The setting was familiar, but the threads were not. Skubal wore his usual headband and sleeveless hoodie, but both were dipped in Dodger blue instead of stamped with the Olde English D. The night before, he pitched six brilliant innings in the Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers, returning to Comerica Park less than a month after the Tigers traded him to Los Angeles at the deadline for three prospects.
Skubal didn't have a say in where he went. But based on his interaction with the media before Detroit's game with the Dodgers on Saturday, Aug. 29, he looks to have landed in a situation he really likes.
"[The Dodgers] have won the last two World Series for a reason. It's not a mistake," he said. "You watch [first baseman Freddie Freeman's] ground ball routine, he does the same thing every single day. I think those routines matter, and they translate to the field, stuff they do in the cage, the way pitchers prepare ... no little thing is overlooked, and I think that's what makes good teams really good."

Tarik Skubal had not even thrown a pitch Friday night before Detroit made its feelings pretty clear.
As Skubal walked to the bullpen mound around 6:32 p.m. ET to begin warming up for his first start at Comerica Park as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, fans throughout the ballpark rose to their feet and applauded the former Tigers ace.
Then came the real moment.
After Skubal completed his bullpen session and began walking back toward the Dodgers dugout, the Tigers played a video tribute to Skubal on the Comerica Park scoreboard.
As you can see in the video below, Skubal appeared emotional (biting his upper lip) as he made his way toward the dugout, while the still-filling stadium gave him another warm ovation.

Tarik Skubal is poised to make his return to Detroit, albeit this time in a new jersey.
The left-handed ace hasn't pitched at Comerica Park since July 29, but that was as a member of the Detroit Tigers.
Skubal was traded ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers got back three minor league players: Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith. The trade was criticized on social media after such a low return was announced for such a marquee player.
The southpaw is under contract only for the remainder of the 2026 season. Detroit knew that Skubal was approaching free agency and hadn't been able to come to terms with him. Rather than risking him walking for nothing, the Tigers opted to trade him.
Now, Skubal will hit free agency this offseason, barring a blockbuster extension with the Dodgers.

Detroit Tigers starter Troy Melton did his part in an afternoon pitchers duel, save for one early inning that put his squad behind for good.
Despite another quality start from Melton, the Tigers lost, 3-0, to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Comerica Park in Detroit. The loss gave the Rays the series win and dropped the Tigers to 62-71.
It was Melton's ninth quality start of the season, as the righty allowed three runs over seven innings but left with the loss, his third of the year. Melton's efficient outing didn't help the Tigers match Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta, who threw six scoreless innings in his best start since the Rays acquired him at the trade deadline from the New York Mets.
The Rays scored two runs in the second inning, which turned out to be all the offense they needed to secure the win. Meanwhile, the Tigers recorded just two total hits and didn't bring a single runner into scoring position.
And the challenge only gets greater for the Tigers. After a day off on Thursday, Aug. 27, Detroit hosts the back-to-back World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game set, with a familiar friend taking the hill on Friday, Aug. 28, for the defending champions.

DETROIT (AP) — Max Clark hit his first home run at Comerica Park and five Tigers pitchers combined to allow one run as Detroit ended a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.
Clark's homer, the second of his career, gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, and that was more than enough for Detroit's pitching staff. Starter Jackson Jobe allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings, and four relievers combined to allow one hit.
Drew Sommers (1-3) retired all five batters he faced for his first major league victory and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 17th save.
Detroit had lost nine of its last 10 to fall 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the race for the third AL wild card.
Ian Seymour (9-5), who replaced Tampa Bay opener Casey Legumina, gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Rays have lost eight of their last 12 games.

The Detroit Tigers looked to stop their six-game losing streak in their Tuesday-night tilt against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. They did exactly that by hitting a timely home run and taking advantage of some shaky defence in a 4-1 win to even the three-game series at a win apiece.
Jackson Jobe made his fourth start of the year for the Tigers. The previous three had alternated good, bad and good, and the pitch count has been gradually ramping-up; his previous start saw him throw 86 pitches. He hasn't been striking out many so far — heck, Framber Valdez didn't strike anyone out on Monday night — but, like Valdez, he succeeds when he gets hitters to bash the ball into the ground.
Casey Legumina, a lefty, opened for Ian Seymour, a lefty. Both Legumina and Seymour have started some and relieved some, although Legumina is more of a reliever and Seymour is more of a starter and/or "bulk guy." Seymour has generally been pretty solid, mostly in a starting role for the past two months. Strikeouts are not a problem for him; he tends to get more fly ***** hit than the average pitcher, although he generally limits hard contact and has kept his hard-hit percentage below average. Would that play out well in cavernous Comerica National Park? Mostly, but not entirely; decidedly, even.
Things started off pretty quietly for both teams, with Jobe looking generally good but having trouble with his control. As we've discussed before, the recovery from Tommy John surgery often sees pitchers taking a little longer to get that control back… and that's what's happening here. Gleyber Torres made a nice play, though.

The Dodgers backed him with four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to give him his first victory in the National League.

The Tigers, at the most inopportune time, lost their third straight game and their sixth out of seven, a dispiriting 5-2 defeat against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 21, at Kauffman Stadium.
Slip-sliding away.
They are suddenly six games under .500 (61-67) for the first time since July 31. At game's end, they were six games back in the Central Division and 2.5 back in the wild-card race.
The Tigers' hitters couldn't do anything against Royals' lefty Noah Cameron. He shut them down over seven innings at Comerica Park on July 24. And he did it again Friday over five innings. He was at 85 pitches and he was coming off a complete-game, two-hit shutout in Anaheim, which is why his outing was stopped after five.

Detroit — Red Hawaiian shirts took over Comerica Park on Sunday with over 900 people traveling across the world for the 17th annual "Magnum P.I." Day.
Known as the "Magnums," the group partnered with the Brain Injury **** ociation of Michigan in 2025, and a portion of Tigers game tickets bought through their group link are donated to help the **** ociation.
"I get emotional talking about it," said Aaron Klassen, the primary organizer for the event. "Who knew what started as just a bunch of hooligans having fun would turn into something of this caliber to be able to make such an incredible impact and give back to the community."
Founded by Shana Smail, Shaun Smail and Kevin Stephenson in 2009, the first event was minuscule compared to now, with only about 12 people in attendance and any color Hawaiian shirt worn. The group is inspired by the 1980s show "Magnum P.I.," and fans are dressed like Detroit native Tom Selleck, who stars in the show as Thomas Magnum.
Nowadays, they have thousands of members in a Facebook group and had fans, workers, and even PAWS, the Tigers' mascot, dressed in the signature Magnum look: an Aloha "Jungle Bird" shirt, sunglasses, real or fake mustaches, and a Tigers hat to top off the outfit.

As he crossed into more innings than he had pitched all of last season (134) Sean Burke had his worst start since June 13, giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings that took him 72 pitches. His velocity was off a couple of ticks and his command wasn't terrific, either. The first and biggest blow was a two-run triple in the second on Brett Callahan's first major league pitch. Callahan then was knocked in on a Max Clark single to make it 3-0 (Callahan's next time up he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Adam Beck on a clear ball, but his attempt at a challenge was declared too late by Beck, who had a terrible day overall.)
The Sox got one run back on a Tristan Peters opposite-field pop-up ground-rule double (those corners in Comerica are really short) and two grounders. The Tigers got it back to 4-1 on an opposite-field homer off Sam Antonacci's glove by Colt Keith in the third, then in the fifth they learned why the dreaded leadoff walk is so dreaded: Tigers starter Drew Anderson, at his highest pitch count all year, pinned Peters down 0-2 then threw four straight ****** , followed by a slider that didn't slide that Drew Romo slid 386 feet to right to make it 4-3.
A Randal Grichuk pinch-double and Colson Montgomery broken-bat single in the sixth tied the game. Next, Tigers lefty reliever Todd Holton again proved the dreaded-leadoff-walk rule by giving Antonacci (who doesn't hit lefties well) a five-pitch pass and following that by setting one on a tee for Munetaka Murakami, only to see it land 393 feet away. Make it 6-4, White Sox.

The White Sox, after banging out 14 hits and four homers Friday night, flooded the bases again with 12 hits. They had a runner at second base and no outs in five of the first seven innings, including the seventh when right-handed pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk doubled off lefty Drew Sommers.

Despite a strong performance at the plate and on defense by Tigers catcher Eduardo Valencia, they fell 4-3 to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Tigers starter Troy Melton, the club's best pitcher this season, allowed three runs over 4⅓ innings, marking his shortest start of the season, in a game marked by inconsistency and bad luck with missed defensive plays. It was just the second time this season Melton has allowed at least three earned runs in a game, with his nine hits allowed a career-high for the second-year starter.
The game also featured the first appearance for Chicago catcher Jake Rogers in a White Sox uniform, with the former Tiger getting a standing ovation during his first plate appearance.
The Tigers offense for the second game in a row was paced by a rookie, with Valencia hitting an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the fourth to keep the Tigers in step with the White Sox. Valencia also threw a runner out in the top of the ninth inning and represented the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out looking in his final at-bat.

The Detroit Tigers have unveiled a dramatically altered starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's critical game against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.
Facing left-hander Anthony Kay, manager A.J. Hinch has moved Hao-Yu Lee into the No. 2 spot, placed Dillon Dingler at designated hitter and moved Kevin McGonigle down from No. 3 to cleanup. Rookie catcher Eduardo Valencia will bat fifth and handle Troy Melton behind the plate.
Detroit enters the game at 60-62, trailing first-place Chicago by 3.5 games in the American League Central.
