The latest addition to the Formula 1 calendar had already sparked plenty of discussion in the paddock before the weekend. Most of the conversations centred on safety and whether the track around the IFEMA complex would actually prove to be a 'car killer', as several teams feared after the rather chaotic F3 test.
Another aspect that attracted plenty of interest was La Monumental, Turn 12 of the new circuit. It is the corner with 13.5 degrees of banking, which equates to an incline of around 24%.
This is less than the final corner at Zandvoort – the Arie Luyendyk corner has 18 degrees of banking – but despite that, Pirelli describes La Monumental as the toughest corner on the entire F1 calendar for the tyres.
"Basically the peak of the vertical energy is not higher than in other corners that we have in the calendar, like in Qatar, the banking in Zandvoort, et cetera. It's more about the time you are under load and the continuous load that you have," Pirelli's chief engineer Simone Berra explained.
"So basically instead of two or three seconds, you have 5.5 seconds under those loads. So you have double the duty cycle in that area. That is the main thing to keep in mind and what we are considering in our calculations."

I figured I wasn't going to post anything more until the Game Thread, but everyone is reporting that the Jays are calling up 30-year-old outfielder Rudy Martin. They picked up Martin off waivers from the Royals, back in July.
He was drafted by the Royals in the 25th round of the 2014 draft and he's played basically everywhere since, except for the major leagues, but that ends now (hopefully, I hope he gets into some games). I admire guys who keep playing, keep the dream alive.
This year, playing for three different minor league teams, he's hit .274/.394/421 with 11 home runs, 55 walks, 83 strikeouts and 45 steals in 369 at bats. He's played all three outfield spots in his career.
He's a left-handed batter.
And he's not on the 40-man roster, so there are a couple of moves that will have to be made.

On September 8, 2026, GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) agreed to buy Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) for $11.75 billion. The acquisition marks the company's largest bet yet on precision engine castings, a constraint that has been capping GE's growth. Trading already at roughly 40x earnings, the company has now attacked one of its genuine bottlenecks through the deal. But has it paid too much to do it?
Castings, including the superalloy and ******* anium hot-section parts inside the jet engines, have constrained GE's engine production, including programs such as LEAP and GEnx, as well as its high-margin aftermarket. Without these castings, the company can neither build nor service its engines. If the acquisition closes, the company will gain access to CPP's 20-plus plants and about 6,600 workers, which are essential for making those components. The deal would therefore enable GE to control the constraint as well as defend its margins. CEO Larry Culp characterized the move as securing manufacturing capacity to meet simultaneous demand across commercial engines, aftermarket services, and defense contracts.
The valuation is where bulls should slow down. GE is paying roughly 18x 2027 EBITDA including synergies (26x without synergies). The sellers are private equity firms Warburg Pincus and Berkshire Partners. They have basically offloaded a cyclical business near the peak of the aerospace cycle. This is smart money selling to GE instead of the other way around. The real tell is that GE felt compelled to buy its way past this capacity bottleneck instead of scaling organically, which reveals how tight its prized aftermarket really was. Also, CPP also supplies other major aerospace and defense companies such as Pratt & Whitney, Honeywell, and Lockheed Martin, and through the vertical tie-up, the company invites antitrust scrutiny before it closes in late 2027.

Hence, more than merely fixing a supply chain issue, the CPP acquisition defends the company's high margin and multiple. Financially, the transaction is accretive to adjusted EPS and free cash flow in the first year, funded through $7 billion in cash alongside newly issued debt. Insider Monkey data shows 113 hedge funds held GE in Q2 2026, down modestly from 119 in Q1, reflecting firm institutional positioning. Short interest is just 1.3% of float, below peers like Honeywell International (1.6%). Almost no one bets against it.

As one of the NFL's best defenders over the last decade or so, we didn't get to see much of Nick Bosa in 2025. The San Francisco 49ers star pass-rusher tore his ACL in the third game of last season. This injury obviously ended his campaign extremely early and what could've been a bid for his second career Defensive Player of the Year award.
It doesn't seem like that ACL tear will affect Bosa's availability in any meaningful way in 2026.
As 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris clarified earlier this week, Bosa will, in fact, play against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday. The best part for the 49ers? Bosa doesn't appear to have any meaningful limitations. Because Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 of last year, he's basically had almost a calendar year to recover and train back to 100 percent. He will be full go as he tries to make Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's life a living ****** .
That is, to put it lightly, amazing news for a San Francisco team that has been ravaged by injuries over the last couple of years:

Josh Hokit has a serious problem with Alex Pereira campaigning for a Ciryl Gane rematch.
Pereira (13-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) was finished by Gane in their interim heavyweight ***** le fight at UFC Freedom 250 in June. Gane dropped Pereira with a jab then swarmed him for the second-round TKO. "Poatan" complained that several shots from Gane landed to the back of his head in the fight-ending sequence, and he's eager to run things back.

Surging heavyweight Josh Hokit went on tirade on social media after former two-division UFC champion Alex Pereira posted a video campaigning for a rematch with Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight belt.
In a series of X posts targeting Pereira and making his case for the next shot at Gane, Hokit criticized the idea that Pereira and Ilia Topuria could challenge for belts next after both got finished by Gane and Justin Gaethje this past June at UFC White House, respectively.
"As a fan, that fight makes no ***** sense," wrote Hokit, who finished Derrick Lewis on that same card. "I watched you get demolished. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the New Orleans Pelicans are sending Jordan Hawkins, Micah Peavy, a future second-round pick, and a future second-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson.
The main reason for this trade is pretty simple: New Orleans needed to clear salary before officially adding Bennedict Mathurin on his two-year, $16.0 million deal. Because the Pelicans are using the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to sign him, they can't finish above the first apron afterward, so they had to open enough room under that line first. Memphis is basically getting paid to help the Pelicans clean up the payroll, and I think the Grizzlies did very well here.

The early non-conference season continues to bring a mixed bag for Northwestern (2-3). At one moment, it seems to thrive and have its way, and at others, it seems lost.
That's exactly what the 'Cats trip to Starkville looked like last week, handing Alabama (3-1) its first loss of the season before being dispatched by Mississippi State (4-1). These contests showed both sides of the coin when it comes to Wildcat volleyball.
Let's not waste time. Here are your three major takeaways from the weekend.
It's Lauren Dignan's time. She donned the libero jersey in both contests this week. That's not to say Drew Wright or Gigi Navarette will be tossed aside, but its clear that Tim Nollan believes in who he's recruited as the future of that position. 2025 was her year to learn the machine, 2026 is her year to take the wheel.
The Mara Štiglic-Bella Bullington partnership is starting to settle into place. Štiglic led the team with 36 kills while Bullington followed with 26. The rapid growth of success for these two feels of utmost importance, Bullington basically undertaking Rylen Reid's role in the system from a year ago and Štiglic learning the system in its entirety.

All of the hype and the hoopla of the offseason was quickly wiped away for Notre Dame. Despite the "leave no doubt" mantra and the focus on starting fast — the football gods had something to say about it with Wisconsin and Lambeau Field. In the end, however, the Irish put in enough work to get a 41-13 win over Wisconsin in the season opener.
Both Notre Dame and Wisconsin started the game with a 3 and out and followed them up with a field goal each. Spencer Porath's three pointer was the first Irish field goal since October of last year.
Notre Dame's offense just looked apprehensive and way too conservative with a quarterback like CJ Carr, and they tried **** ing and dunking to no real success. The Irish caught a big break, however, when Wisconsin fumbled the kickoff after the Porath field goal, and Ko'o Kia recovered the ball (seemingly) inbounds. A few plays later, Carr found tight end James Flanigan for the first touchdown of the season.
Wisconsin, however, fought back and Badger WR Malachi Coleman put a move on Jayden Sanders to get wide open and Colton Joseph found him in the corner of the end zone to tie the game up at 10 a piece. Imagine a city free from rush-hour traffic -- not a city that literally doesn't have cars (like, say, Venice), but one that has aerial forms of transportation, like flying cars.
That picture in your head is something that could become real in the next decade. The term for it is "urban air mobility." It won't look like The Jetsons or Back to the Future II -- that is, present-day cars that can hover and propel. Rather, urban air mobility will give us electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, basically a combo of drone and helicopter. They will be quieter than helicopters, with a quick velocity that can reduce an hour of traffic to a 10-minute aerial hop.

It won't look like The Jetsons or Back to the Future II -- that is, present-day cars that can hover and propel. Rather, urban air mobility will give us electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, basically a combo of drone and helicopter. They will be quieter than helicopters, with a quick velocity that can reduce an hour of traffic to a 10-minute aerial hop.

The general expectation around the NBA is that the Los Angeles Lakers will take at least half a step backward this season without LeBron James. Last season, they went 53-29 and finished fourth in the Western Conference, but now, they may not have a true third scorer, and the belief is that they still lack enough plus defenders on the perimeter.
But the Lakers still do have a competitive roster, and in fact, their roster does look more balanced and versatile this time around. Derek Fisher, a guard who won five NBA ****** les with the Lakers back in the day, feels there won't be much of a drop-off this season with James now on the Philadelphia 76ers, via Lakers Nation.
"You think about the few organizations where LeBron has been, you tell me where their record has gotten dramatically better after he left," Fisher said during his show on 97.1 The Fan LA. "So it's not going to fall off that much because Luka [Doncic] is there. I think Luka and Austin Reaves are basically an All-Star backcourt that you can roll out every night, and then Walker Kessler is a young developing almost All-Star-ish type of big in terms of his elite defense and rebounding. So I think you have a chance…45 to 50 wins, a lot of things are going to have to go right, but it feels fair to me."

CLEVELAND – Jack Flaherty is on his way back to the Detroit Tigers.
The 30-year-old right-hander will begin a rehab ******* ignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Sept. 6.
"Short stint," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said on Saturday before the Tigers played the Cleveland Guardians. "Basically, like another live BP, but we're going to have it in competition. So he may only go one inning. He may get two ups. We're not sure."
Flaherty is rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation, and has been throwing live bullpens in recent weeks while traveling with the Tigers, with fastball velocity around 93 mph, according to Hinch.
"The reality is setting in that it's going to be really hard to build him all the way back up into that five, six, or seven-inning pitcher," Hinch said Wednesday in Minneapolis. "But that doesn't mean that we won't be more creative with him if the recovery continues."

I realize that what I'm about to say will come across as 'low standards', 'acceptance of mediocrity', 'a moral victory', etc — but I will say it anyway and with my chest: If you replay this game 10 more times, Real Madrid wins it 10 times. We just happened to play the freak version where Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty, three big chances, and then Vinicius missed a big chance, Espi had bad luck, and Real Madrid squandered an xG of nearly four. The math checks out: Real Madrid were mostly good but didn't score, somehow. What should've happened was Real Madrid go up one or two goals by half-time, Bellingham and Güler get a deserved ******* ist each, then Real Betis open up in the second half and get cooked. But also, all that to say: Real Madrid didn't deserve to win just because they created more chances, and I just made up a scenario to make myself feel better — possibly because I feel numb to the way the last two seasons have gone. Also: Real Madrid are generally terrible at the Benito Villamarin in the last few years. But, at some point, you have to stop using past precedence as an excuse to lose. How many league ******* les do Real Madrid have in the past 20 years again? Answer: Not enough.
Another Arda Güler masterclass, wasted. He's basically been lights out in every minute he's played in this season. When I have to repeat this after every Arda Güler performance, that's pretty ******* good evidence that he's one of the best players in Europe right now, and certainly, from an ******* ytical standpoint, clearly one of the best creators on the entire continent.

The Sacramento Kings' interest in Jalen Duren isn't going away, even if the Pistons have basically shut the door on a sign-and-trade for now. On the latest episode of ESPN's The Hoop Collective, Anthony Slater said GM Scott Perry has Duren's name "with highlighter pen" as a possible target, while also noting that Sacramento could create max cap ***** e next summer if Duren takes his $9.6 million qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027. The Kings already met with Duren earlier in free agency, so this isn't just random trade-machine talk.
The problem is Detroit. The Kings would like to sign-and-trade for Duren with Domantas Sabonis going the other way, per Tim MacMahon, but "that's not happening," because the Pistons have made it clear they aren't interested in moving their 22-year-old All-NBA center. Detroit reportedly wants Duren closer to $35.0 million per season, while his camp is looking for more than $40.0 million, and the Pistons still "absolutely, positively, 100%" intend to keep him despite that gap in "nasty" negotiations.
So if the Kings really want Duren now instead of waiting another year, Sabonis alone clearly isn't getting it done. They would need to make the return much bigger, probably bring in more teams to solve the salary issues, and give Detroit enough immediate talent and draft capital to at least reconsider its current position. This four-team framework with the Bucks and Raptors does exactly that, while landing Sacramento the young center they clearly want to build around.

The Fed's benchmark, the overnight rate it charges banks to borrow from each other, currently sits in a range of 3.50% to 3.75%, and markets have spent weeks bracing for it to go higher on Sept. 16. Higher rates make a boring government bond paying you nearly 5% look awfully good next to stocks so we can forgive the equity jockeys who have been deprived of good news for a few moons from getting a little giddy when Waller signaled he'd hold if August inflation behaves and knocked hike odds from 63.2% to 50.4%, per CME FedWatch. Jalon Daniels entered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason program as an undrafted rookie simply trying to earn a place in the organization. A few months later, he will open the regular season one play away from being Tampa Bay's starting quarterback, and that unlikely rise has certainly caught the attention of general manager Jason Licht.
Speaking with NFL Network's Sara Walsh, Licht summed up Daniels' path to becoming Baker Mayfield's backup with some significant praise. "There's no blueprint for an undrafted rookie becoming your number 2 quarterback," Licht told Walsh. "Jalon basically wrote his own." That statement carries even more weight given how rare Daniels' situation is. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last undrafted rookie quarterback to be active for Week 1 was Trevone Boykin with the Seattle Seahawks in 2016. Daniels didn't simply survive roster cuts, either. He beat out veteran Jake Browning for the job and convinced Tampa Bay it could enter the season with only two quarterbacks on its initial 53-man roster.

Licht said conversations shifted from Daniels needing to prove he could be the backup to essentially needing to prove that he couldn't. He never gave them a reason to change course. There is still considerable risk involved. Daniels has never taken a regular-season NFL snap, and Tampa Bay is trying to contend for another NFC South ****** le. If Mayfield misses time, the Bucs would be handing their offense to an undrafted rookie. Yet Licht doesn't appear interested in keeping a veteran around simply for the comfort of experience. He said Tampa Bay would rather have a talented, prepared, inexperienced quarterback than choose experience just for the sake of it. Although Bitcoin (BTCUSD) rallied in August and Strategy (MSTR) recently resumed buying Bitcoin after a two-month hiatus, Strategy's strategy has mostly been a failure. As of Sept. 1, the average price at which the company acquired Bitcoin stood at about $75,412. Even after President Donald Trump boosted Bitcoin prices with positive remarks about crypto last month and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pitched in with his bond buyback plan, the cryptocurrency was changing hands overnight on Sept. 2 at about $77,275. In other words, after a big rally by Bitcoin, its prices are still only slightly below Strategy's average purchase price. And after all the company's compensation, interest, and dividend costs, it certainly appears to be losing a great deal of money, not only on paper, but also in terms of its overall investment approach.

Yesterday was a really bad day for the Los Angeles Clippers. The NBA found the franchise guilty of salary-cap circumvention in the Kawhi Leonard case, stripped them of five first-round picks from 2029 through 2033, fined the team $30.0 million, suspended Steve Ballmer for one year, and suspended Lawrence Frank for six months. Leonard was also fined $700,000, incredibly escaping barely harmed in all of this.
The one piece of good news, if we can even call it that, is that the league didn't block Leonard's move back to the Raptors. That trade had been on hold while the investigation was happening, and with the case now finished, the deal can move forward. Toronto had agreed to send Brandon Ingram, Gradey ****** , two unprotected first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a 2027 first-round pick swap for Leonard.
Those five lost first-round picks hurt the most. The Clippers were finally getting close to controlling their own future again starting in 2029, but now they won't make a first-round selection with one of those picks until 2034, although they should get the Raptors' 2031 and 2033 picks. Still, for a team entering a rebuild, that is brutal. Tanking doesn't help much when there is basically no first-round pick waiting for you at the end of the season, since the 2027 pick swap from Toronto is the worst one among the Raptors, the Clippers, and the Thunder, and the 2028 pick goes entirely to OKC.
So if the Clippers can't rely on landing a future franchise player through the Draft, and they also can't use any of their upcoming first-round picks as trade ****** ets since they belong to other teams, they will have to get creative. There are still other ways to find young talent, from taking chances on former high picks to using cap ****** e, trades, the G League, and overlooked free agents.
With almost a decade of Draft problems ahead of them, here are five different ways the Clippers can try to survive this rebuild and find young players without waiting until 2034.

Giada De Laurentiis is trading the kitchen for the ballroom.
The cast for season 35 of Dancing with the Stars was officially announced on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and the celebrity chef is one of the 16 competitors, joining a lineup of actors, athletes, former dancers and reality stars.
The Food Network alum, 56, tells PEOPLE she was inspired by her 18-year-old daughter, Jade, to do the show.
"I've been asked several times over the years, and I think that this time I said yes because my daughter basically forced me to say yes," she admits. "And also because I just dropped her off at college, and I think that she felt and I felt that I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone and do something totally different."

Charlie Theron had a surprising response to fans expecting her to discuss Tom Hardy. The actress reflected on filming Mad Max: Fury Road instead. Theron shared a sweet memory involving her daughter and costars. She then jokingly told the crowd, "Shame on you!"

The euro has been trying to recover early on Monday, but in a very lackluster fashion. I think at this point, traders are out there trying to sort out what the Friday speech actually means for forex markets when Kevin Warsh basically eliminated the idea of Federal Reserve rate cuts that many traders had been trying to price in.
As usual, the market got way ahead of itself with that. We've been seeing this for a couple of years now where the market gets excited about potential rate cuts coming out of the United States for a couple of weeks, and then reality sets in. And I think that's part of what's going on here.
So, I'm watching the euro to sell it, not to buy it. Somewhere around the 1.1620 level, if we start to see signs of exhaustion, that would be about a 50% retracement of the move from Friday; I might look for getting short there.
The British pound, I think, is probably going to be somewhat range-bound, mainly because the British pound, of course, has a higher interest rate attached to it. So, it is a little insulated from US dollar strength, and I think most of the reaction was more about the US dollar than anything else.
I wouldn't read too much into British pound weakness, because at this point in time, even if I want to buy the US dollar, I am going to short other currencies, weaker currencies.

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't blow up anything after getting swept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, and I think that was the right call, because this team was already pretty close. Cleveland finished 52-30, ranked sixth in offensive rating at 119.2, and reached its first Conference Finals since 2018, so the answer wasn't starting over, it was finding better pieces around a core that still has the talent to win the East.
The front office basically doubled down on that idea during the summer. Donovan Mitchell signed a four-year, $273.0 million extension, James Harden came back on a three-year, $97.0 million deal after arriving for Darius Garland at the deadline, and the Cavaliers made their biggest outside move by landing Peyton Watson in a five-team sign-and-trade. Max Strus, Dennis Schroder, Dean Wade, and Keon Ellis are among the players gone, while Mario Hezonja also returned to the NBA after several seasons in Europe.
That leaves Cleveland with a very clear bet for 2026-27: The Big Four have to be good enough to carry most of this. There isn't another superstar coming, and they have the pieces to win, because Mitchell averaged almost 28 points last season, Harden can still run an elite offense, Mobley is entering his prime, and Allen remains one of the better centers in the East.
The problem is that we already saw this group hit a wall in the playoffs. Cleveland scored only 107.9 points per game during the postseason, Harden dropped to 19.2 points and 5.5 **** ists while shooting 29.9% from three, and the Knicks beat them by 37 points in Game 4 to finish the sweep.

The long offseason is over. We made it. So, that said, let's get to it.
1) Yes, we'll get to the Stanford game, but I wanted to get to something else first. What a day yesterday for drafted Miami Hurricanes in the NFL.
NINE players were drafted by NFL teams back in April. One of Miami's best draft days in a long time.
But, despite being drafted, you still have to earn a spot on the roster. And guess what? 8 of 9 Canes made their team's 53-man roster. EIGHT! And the ninth, Anez Cooper, was placed on injured reserve designated to return after a strong preseason. So, basically all nine made it. Even CJ Daniels, a Rams 7th round pick, made the team, who is the odds-on favorite to win it all this year.
