WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - U.S. producer prices increased in August amid higher costs of goods, airline fares and hospital services, boosting the chances of an interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve next week.
The report from the Labor Department on Thursday followed news last week of a sharp acceleration in job growth in August. Airline fares and hospital services are among the components that go into the calculation of the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Indexes, the inflation measures tracked by the U.S. central bank for its 2% inflation target.
August's Consumer Price Index data on Friday could shed more light on the inflation picture and further shape interest rate expectations for next week.
"This report points to cost increases in the pipeline and will support the case of those on the Committee who want to hike rates now," said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics.

Former Bayern Munich great Bastian Schweinsteiger gave the defending champions a kind second round task in the German Cup when he drew them to host second division Magdeburg on Saturday.
It could have been worse for Bayern because all 18 top flight teams had won their first round games for the first time since 2008 to be in the draw pot of the 32 teams.

The Cardinals have crossed the proverbial goal line and are locking up one of their key young offensive players.
According to a joint report from ESPN and NFL Network, receiver Michael Wilson has agreed to a three-year extension with the club.
Wilson, a third-round pick in 2023, was entering the last year of his rookie contract.
The deal is worth $75 million with a maximum value of $78 million with $47 million guaranteed.
Josh Weinfuss of ESPN reported on Wednesday night that there had been "movement" in negotiations and that a deal could happen before the end of the week.

Just when we thought festival season was over, Olivia Rodrigo flipped it and reversed it with Daisy Chain Fields. Safety Peyton Bowen, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebackers Owen Heinecke and Kip Lewis, quarterback John Mateer and offensive linemen Michael Fasusi, Jake Maikkula and Eddy Pierre-Louis were named the Sooners' season captains Tuesday.
Entering his second season at OU, Mateer has cemented himself as even more of a leader and is out to prove he's gotten better. He's fresh off an up and down season in which he broke his thumb and threw for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
On defense, Bowen, Heinecke, Lewis, Stone and Wein are crucial veterans who opted to return. Bowen and Wein were each members of the All-SEC Second Team last season.
Fasusi, Maikkula and Pierre-Louis are three out of the four offensive linemen with starting experience with the Sooners on an offensive line that is expected to be improved. Maikkula will miss time with a "short-term" injury and isn't expected to play in the opener.

American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten promoted a nationwide back-to-school boycott of retail giant Target over the weekend because the company had not condemned ICE operations in Minnesota — the location of its headquarters — prompting criticism from education advocates and a call for federal scrutiny.
"We gave Target ample time to stand with the communities in which they operate and help their neighbors, but its silence about federal immigration abuses has been deafening," Weingarten said in a statement.
"The issue could not be more pressing: Seven months since the murders of Alex Pretti and Renée Good, masked ICE agents are still in our streets, our schools and our communities, terrorizing families in the name of Donald Trump's illegal and immoral ****** ault on immigrants striving for their American Dream," she continued. "That's why we're urging our members to avoid Target and patronize more ethical shopping alternatives this back-to-school season."
Weingarten also shared a video on Instagram, where she directed families to the AFT's "Shop Smart, Not Target" website, which maps local back-to-school shopping alternatives. The organization launched the campaign Wednesday after sending Target CEO Michael Fiddelke letters in February and March.

UE welcomes a class of five new-comers this season including four freshman and one transfer.
After a (6-22) season in his first year at the helm of the program he said he focused on adding players with a lot of success to the group to bring a more competitive edge.
"We don't set out every single match to say alright, we're playing today let's go win," Coach Weinber said. "We set out to compete and the wins are a byproduct of that. But we feel like we're in a better position this year to win more matches. Our squad is deeper than it was a year ago, so for us it's about being more competitive more of the time and seeing those results translate to the court."
Despite losing some star players from a season ago and accepting that there will be hiccups this year his team echoed the sentiment about wanting to play at a higher level this upcoming season.

Radian Group (NYSE:RDN) delivered its Q2 2026 earnings on August 6, and the numbers marked a turning point. Total revenue jumped 93% year-over-year to $575 million, while net earned premiums more than doubled to $504 million, as the company's first full quarter with newly acquired specialty insurer Inigo showed up in the results. Book value per share climbed 8.5% to $36. With a forward P/E of just 7.19, the market doesn't seem convinced the growth will stick.
Radian's legacy mortgage insurance operation kept humming along on its own. New insurance written rose 14% year-over-year to $16.3 billion, and persistency held at 82%, pushing primary insurance in force to a record $284 billion. About half of that portfolio carries a mortgage rate of 5.5% or lower, so those borrowers have little reason to refinance away, which supports future premium income. On August 4, SentinelOne (NYSE:S) expanded its work with Amazon Web Services, folding its AI security tools into a single governance layer for Amazon Bedrock. The news arrives as the cybersecurity company's revenue growth is speeding up and its losses are shrinking, even as two of its top executives cashed out stock in the same stretch.
The new integration ties SentinelOne's Prompt Security, Singularity Cloud Security, and Singularity AI SIEM into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, giving security teams one dashboard to watch, enforce, and fix AI risk. It builds on a narrower integration from June 2026 that put runtime guardrails at the Bedrock AgentCore gateway. The Oklahoma Sooners' defensive front seven has become one of the best in college football after a disruptive and productive 2025. Despite the losses of Gracen Halton, Damonic Williams, Marvin Jones, Jr., and R Mason Thomas, there's an expectation that the unit will once again be one of the best in the sport.
CBS Sports ranked their top front-sevens in college football, and the Sooners came in at No. 1 in the nation.
Oklahoma's front seven is led by All-SEC second-team defensive end Taylor Wein and preseason All-SEC selection David Stone at defensive tackle. Fellow defensive tackle Jayden Jackson will play a huge role for the Sooners and be as impactful as anyone on OU's defense.
The Sooners need guys like Nigel Smith, Trent Wilson, Bishop Thomas, and James Carrington to raise the talent floor in the defensive tackle rotation. Smith, Wilson, and Carrington were four-star prospects coming out of high school and have the talent and ability to be disruptive in Oklahoma's defense. TSV 1860 Munich have signed Mathew Collins, son of British rock legend Phil Collins, to a one-year contract running until 2027, the German fourth-tier Regionalliga club announced on Friday.
Collins, 21, completed a trial with the Munich club before signing. 1860 Munich begin their season on Saturday with an away match at Schweinfurt.
The historic club were relegated from the third division for financial reasons and have parted ways with their long-standing investor Hasan Ismaik.
Matthew Collins spent last season in Austria with SV Austria Salzburg.

Ex-PFL fighter Logan Storley had the charges against him dropped after he was arrested on **** ual **** ault allegations back in May in Key West, Fla.
Online records in Monroe County show that prosecutors closed the case while canceling the next court hearing, which was originally scheduled for Aug. 3. No further details were made available, but the case is now closed and Storley is cleared from the charges.
"We are pleased that the criminal case involving Logan Storley has been resolved through a pretrial diversion program, after which the State has agreed to dismiss the charges," Storley's manager and attorney David Martin said in a statement sent to MMA Fighting.
"We want to thank attorneys Jeff and Diego Weiner for their exceptional representation and most importantly, we want to thank everyone who refused to rush to judgment. The 2026 SEC media days have come and gone this week in Tampa, Florida, and that means we're one step closer to the college football regular season.
As per usual, the SEC released the Preseason Media Poll All-SEC team on Friday, which was voted on by the media that was on hand covering this week's event. After the Oklahoma Sooners had just three players make the all-league predictions a year ago, OU was much more well-represented in 2026.
On the first team, both kicker Tate Sandell and long snapper Ben Anderson represented the Sooners. Sandell returned after winning the Lou Groza Award last season, while Anderson has established himself as one of the league's best long snappers over the course of his career.
OU had eight players selected to the second team. Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, offensive lineman Michael Fasusi, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebacker Kip Lewis, defensive backs Eli Bowen and Peyton Bowen, and kicker/punter Grayson Miller all got the nod.
Sategna returns as OU's top wide receiver after showing off his explosiveness last year. Fasusi had an impressive true freshman season in Norman, establishing himself as Oklahoma's starting left tackle. While the selections of Mateer and Wein were fairly expected, it was the choice of Pierre-Louis that raised more than a few eyebrows in Sooner Nation. Venables was asked about Pierre-Louis' inclusion in the group, and he glowed about the third-year guard.
"Eddy, he's an alpha," Venables said. "Eddy is a guy that's had to work incredibly hard. I think he was the top-rated guard by many recruiting outlets coming out of high school. Eddy had some things he needed to work on fundamentally, from his body standpoint, flexibility, things of that nature. Eddy has been somebody that has shown up in the facility from the day he got to Norman, Oklahoma with tremendous gratitude."
Venables had previously pointed out that it was difficult to choose the three players who would represent the Sooners in Tampa, lauding the leadership in his locker room.

The Oklahoma Sooners took to the podium for the 2026 edition of SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida on Monday. Joining head coach Brent Venables to represent OU were redshirt senior quarterback John Mateer, redshirt junior defensive lineman Taylor Wein, and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis.
While Mateer was at media days last year, it was the first time at the event for both Wein and Pierre-Louis. Naturally, both players were asked about their starting quarterback, and both gushed about what Mateer means to the program.
Wein has been going against Mateer in practice for the past couple of seasons, watching from the other side of the ball as Mateer leads the unit. It's been a period of rebuild for the offense after the 2024 disaster, but Wein believes in Mateer and in his ability.
"A very excellent quarterback," Wein said. "He plays very, very consistent. I know that he's very, very self-motivated, just like a lot of the guys on the team, and he does a good job just attacking his weaknesses. I've seen John completely elevate his game and completely transform as a player and his mentality, and it's only elevated the whole offense, and it's brought a huge pulse to the offense, and we're excited. We know John has a very good mindset and he's competitive, and it's actually really funny going against him at practice every day, he's the number one dude talking smack. We're going back and forth and whatnot. It's a really good thing. So, we're excited."
Pierre-Louis will now start alongside Mateer on the offensive side of the ball, and he will work to protect the star quarterback and help lead an offensive resurgence. Growing up in Tampa, Pierre-Louis was a fan of the Sooners, watching from hundreds of miles away during the Baker Mayfield era in Norman. He compared Mateer to Mayfield, who now quarterbacks the hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I know that he's very, very self-motivated, just like a lot of the guys on the team, and he does a good job just attacking his weaknesses. I've seen John completely elevate his game and completely transform as a player and his mentality, and it's only elevated the whole offense, and it's brought a huge pulse to the offense, and we're excited. We know John has a very good mindset and he's competitive, and it's actually really funny going against him at practice every day, he's the number one dude talking smack. We're going back and forth and whatnot. It's a really good thing. So, we're excited."

People’s minds instantly jump to football when they think about Penn State athletics, but don’t sleep on the other programs at the school. The baseball team was in a dark spot heading into this decade, but they’ve netted a .500 record or better in each of the last three seasons.
This newfound hope for the team has borne some promising players, like the three who were selected in the draft this past weekend. The 2026 MLB Draft took place in Philadelphia, where Michael Anderson, Alex Weingartner, and Dalton Harper all heard their names called. The latter two players never officially suited up for the Nittany Lions, although they were slated to join the team this fall.
Anderson was a valuable weapon for Penn State last season, finishing with an impressive .358 batting average, 20 home runs and 53 RBI in 50 games. The earliest draft pick of the bunch, the two-way star was selected in the fifth round by the Texas Rangers, where he has a chance to become a top prospect in the organization.
Weingartner and Harper were more like projection picks, with neither having played NCAA baseball to this point. The Nittany Lions may not be competing for the College World Series, but that isn’t preventing them from developing MLB-level talent.

Selden Kolkebeck's perfect senior season received a fitting storybook ending Sunday.
One month after compiling a 12-0 record and helping lead Old Tappan to the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship, the Harrington Park native was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 2026 MLB Draft. Kolkebeck was chosen with the 14th pick of the round, No. 567 overall.
