Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to trade for San Francisco Giants All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez, a league source told UPI on Monday.
The Phillies are to to send right-handed pitchers Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to the Giants in exchange for Arraez and right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian.
Sources told MLB.com, The Athletic and ESPN that the Phillies also agreed to acquire left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley from the New York Mets in a separate transaction. The Phillies will send outfielder John Spikerman and right-handed pitcher Luke Gabrysh to the Mets in that swap.
Arraez, who led the American League with a .324 batting average, would inject production into a Phillies lineup that has the fourth-worst batting average in the National League.
Arraez, who won batting ****** les in 2022 and 2023, owns a career .318 mark, the best among active players. He hit four home runs, seven triples and 23 doubles, with 43 RBIs, through 105 appearances this season. The 29-year-old infielder is to hit free agency this off-season.

The 2026 MLB trade deadline has already brought some significant moves, including the highly discussed deal that sent Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, the Toronto Blue Jays made a pitching move of their own, as ESPN's Jeff Passan reported they've acquired 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels.
According to Passan, the deal will send Blue Jays' top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero to the Angels. Nimmala is unquestionably a great addition for the Angels, and he's currently listed as the No. 43 overall prospect on MLB.com.
Nimmala is just 20 years old and was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft with the No. 20 overall pick. He entered the MLB draft at just 17. When Nimmala was 19, he moved to High-A Vancouver and hit .224/.313/.381 with 13 home runs in 120 games.
As for Soriano, he's in the midst of a strong year, posting a 9-6 record through 22 starts and a career-best 3.29 ERA. Through 123 innings pitched, he's posted 127 strikeouts.

The Toronto Blue Jays seemed to signal the team was giving up on the 2026 MLB season when it traded away top starter Kevin Gausman on Sunday. Turns out, the team's decision is less a tear down, and more a re-tooling, especially after it acquired starter José Soriano in a deal with the Los Angels Angels on Monday.
Soriano, 27, has a 3.29 ERA over 123 innings. In exchange for Soriano, the Blue Jays gave up shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie MIcheletti Jr. and pitcher Angel Rivero.
While the decision to acquire a major-league caliber pitcher a day after shipping another one out might seem confusing on the surface, there are a few factors that make it a reasonable exchange for the Blue Jays.
Gausman — while an incredibly important part of the franchise's resurgence — is old, declining and in the final year of his contract. He has his highest ERA since the 2019 season and may not have been in the Blue Jays' plans beyond 2026.
Soriano, on the other hand, is still very much in his prime and showed signs of growth earlier in the season. In 42 2/3 innings in April, he had a minuscule 0.84 ERA. That figure ballooned in both May and June, when he posted a 5.34 ERA over those two months, before Soriano settled back down in July to a far better 2.74 ERA.

A series loss in Cincinnati and yet another injury blow will not deter the Pirates from buying at the trade deadline.
Despite falling a game below .500, the Pirates are looking to add more pieces to their roster ahead of the 6 p.m. ET buzzer, a source familiar with the situation told Pittsburgh Baseball Now.
The Pirates made a notable move on Saturday, when they acquired right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the Yankees for a pair of prospects. Among the other additions Pittsburgh has made so far this month are infielder Jacob Gonzalez, left-hander Brandon Eisert and right-hander Ron Marinaccio. But it's not yet enough.
This is the second time general manager Ben Cherington has been looking to add pieces at the deadline and not subtract. The other was in 2024, and if the Pirates want to be serious contenders, they can't repeat what they did two years ago.
That year, the Pirates were teetering between buying and selling but entered the deadline a couple games over .500. To bolster its roster, Pittsburgh acquired infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from the Marlins and left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks from the Rockies.

The Boston Bruins managed to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs earlier this spring, marking a return to the annual tournament for the first time since 2024 after having failed to qualify last spring.
However, their stay in the postseason was short, as they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal by the divisional rival Buffalo Sabres in six games. Despite sniper David Pastrnak's best efforts to stave off elimination with an overtime goal in Game 5 to extend the series, Boston's momentum was halted just days later.
Since then, there have been a handful of changes to their roster, which include the trade of Joonas Korpisalo to the rival New York Rangers, the loss of Fabian Lysell via trade, and the departure of Viktor Arvidsson via free agency.
And according to a key NHL Insider, it might not be long until the Bruins are faced with another notable departure.
The Bruins acquired forward Pavel Zacha from the New Jersey Devils in the summer of 2022 in return for forward Erik Haula, and eventually signed him to a four-year, $19 million contract.

Mired in last place in the NL East, the New York Mets continued their sell-off ahead of Monday's MLB trade deadline, trading Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays for three prospects on Sunday after trading A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins earlier in the week.
Peralta, 30, has been a major disappointment this year, going 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA that would be the second-worst of his career. His 1.48 WHIP would be a career-worst.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had been setting themselves up to be buyers at the trade deadline, and well before the cutoff of team-to-team transactions on Monday evening.
On Saturday afternoon, the Pirates acquired Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees in exchange for a pair of prospects.
This is now Doval's second time in as many years being traded to a new team ahead of the deadline. Even though the pitcher has bounced around the league, Doval's focus is just trying to control what he can.
"In this game, things like that are gonna happen; just getting traded, "said Doval through his interpreter on Sunday.
"The way I see it is just to control the stuff, the things that I can control, and that's gonna happen. Some people are going to make decisions, and I just have to do my job, control myself."

The Dodgers were swept for just the second time this season after the red-hot Boston Red Sox hit four home runs, including three off embattled starter Emmet Sheehan, to take an 8-4 win on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.
Boston hit three home runs in four at-bats in the third inning, with Sheehan giving up blasts to Ceddanne Rafela, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida as the Dodgers suffered their second three-game sweep at home in less than a month.
"Really good ball club," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said about the Red Sox before the game. "Really fundamentally sound. It's a younger group, as far as service time. They're hungry. The Detroit Tigers reportedly explored a different path before sending Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
According to MoccBomb, Detroit pushed to acquire Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Logan Henderson in any potential Skubal deal. Milwaukee reportedly refused to include the young starter, leaving the Tigers to continue searching for a return built around a premium player.
"Sources: #tigers were insistent on landing #brewers Logan Henderson in any deal made for Tarik Skubal. #brewers didn't budge. Once #Dodgers came to the conclusion to move Hope they scratched him and traded him immediately as the main piece for Skubal. It was all but over for #brewers ."
Henderson would have given Detroit a controllable pitcher who has already produced impressive results in the majors.
The 24-year-old entered Sunday with a 5-1 record, 2.66 ERA and 0.909 WHIP across nine starts in 2026. He had struck out 54 batters while issuing only nine walks over 44 innings.

If Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer had one goal ahead of this year's trade deadline, it was to add the type of starting pitcher that a team in win-now mode needs and deserves. And on the eve of the trade deadline, we can now say that he has done just that. The Chicago Cubs landed one of the best rentals on the market Sunday, acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays for prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene.
Gausman, 35, checks a lot of boxes for the Cubs, who have also acquired pitchers David Peterson and Aaron Civale in recent weeks. Not only is Gausman the type of frontline starting pitcher that Chicago's rotation has been missing, but what's more, for a team looking to go deep into October, he has the postseason pedigree that is sought after by every contender.
Chicago's newly acquired right-hander is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season, but his 3.51 FIP would suggest that he has been a bit unlucky thus far in 2026. In his postseason career, Gausman has a 3.83 ERA with 56 strikeouts across 56 ⅓ innings.
There might not be a team in baseball that has been hit as hard by injury as the Chicago Cubs this year. And most of that has come in their starting rotation. After right-hander Cade Horton was lost to season-ending elbow surgery, left-hander Justin Steele hit a setback in his rehab and has yet to pitch this season. Right-handers Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera are also currently on the 15-day IL.
Nonetheless, the Cubs have shown they aren't messing around in their quest to make noise the rest of this season as they try to get back to the playoffs. They designated right-hander Jameson Taillon for ****** ignment on Monday after his struggles continued. He has since been traded to the Blue Jays for a player to be named later or cash.

Newly acquired star Myles Garrett is set to miss his fourth-consecutive practice in his first training camp with the Los Angeles Rams.
Head coach Sean McVay said Garrett is managing "a little soreness in his lower half". The DPOY has already missed three practices and is set to also miss Monday's session. Sarah Bishop of ESPN reporting that he should return for the next block of practices.

The Rams are likely taking a precautionary approach with Garrett. Splash offseason moves only matter if the star player is healthy enough to contribute in the regular season and into the playoffs. McVay and the Rams don't need Garrett for training camp. They need him ready for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.
Garrett isn't the only player whose workload is being managed by the team. Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams, and Byron Young have all received lighter-than-usual workloads in the early going of training camp.

The Chicago Cubs are set to acquire veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, confirmed an official with knowledge of the deal.
The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't yet official.
Gausman, 35, is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season but has been one of the most consistent starters in baseball for the past half-decade, posting a 3.36 from 2020-2025. A two-time All-Star, Gausman finished third in AL Cy Young voting in 2023.
Toronto is receiving minor league outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene in the trade.
Once a top prospect for the Orioles, Gausman came into his own with the San Francisco Giants in 2020 and 2021 before signing a five-year, $110 million deal with Toronto.

You have been waiting for the Cubs to acquire a starting pitcher, and Sunday night, they have done so (Bluesky link):
Per Josh's pre-deadline ranking of Cubs prospects, those are the No. 13 (Ty Southisene) and No. 19 (Brett Bateman) prospects in the Cubs organization. MLB Pipeline ranks them 13th and 21st, respectively.
This is, I believe, a fair deal for a 35-year-old pitcher who is a pending free agent, so this is a rental. The Cubs would be on the hook for slightly more than $7 million of Gausman's $23 million deal for this year. (This might also account for some of the "cash considerations" in the Jameson Taillon deal with the Jays announced earlier today.)
Gausman has a 4.38 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 23 starts this year and 127.1 innings. His K rate and walk rate are about the same as they've been the last couple of years, and with 50 games remaining, that means likely 10 starts in a Cubs uniform for him.
His last start was Friday against the Cardinals and he allowed nine hits and one run in 5.2 innings. Interestingly enough, his first start for the Cubs could wind up being against his old team, as the Blue Jays will be playing a makeup game Thursday at Wrigley Field — and it's possible his opponent could be Taillon.

Acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night for three prospects, Skubal showed up in the Dodgers' dugout during the third inning of the Dodgers' matchup against the visiting Boston Red Sox on Sunday night.
The back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner was immediately greeted by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who had time during a pitching change to embrace Skubal. They chatted for about a minute before Roberts had to get back to work.
Skubal proceeded to walk down the dugout, introducing himself to his new teammates.

On the eve of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the Tampa Bay Rays have bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in exchange for three prospects: OF Aidan Smith, INF Emilien Pitre, and RHP Gary Gill Hill.
Peralta, 30, was acquired by the Mets prior to the start of the 2026 season. The veteran hurler had been the ace of the Milwaukee Brewers for several years prior to the trade. Unfortunately, Peralta's time in Flushing has been less than ideal, compiling a 4.99 ERA | 4.45 FIP over 22 starts during his Mets' tenure. During his time Milwaukee from 2020 through 2025, Peralta was stellar, compiling a 3.33 ERA | 3.60 FIP; the Rays hope to get this version of the veteran hurler.
Heading to New York are three prospects.
Outfielder Aidan Smith was acquired by the Rays as part of the return for Randy Arozarena at the 2024 trade deadline. There was hope that he'd develop into a premier prospect and looked on his way to doing so registering a 158 wRC+ immediately following the trade. However, Smith has been unable to rise past High-A and holds a 68 wRC+ on the season.
Infielder Emilien Pitre was the Rays 2nd round pick in 2024 and has been an above-average offensive perfomer since joining the Rays organization thanks to an excellent ability to draw walks which significantly boosts his on-base percentage. The Chicago White Sox were one of the first teams to make a big move at this year's trade deadline, swinging a deal with the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Luis Castillo.
They sent prospect Boston Smith, reliever Seranthony Dominguez, and outfielder Nolan Jones to Seattle to acquire Castillo, and the final year and a half of his $108 million contract.
But, after that trade, there are still two days to go before the MLB trade deadline passes. Are the White Sox done? According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the White Sox not only are still looking to add, but they are also still interested in starting pitching upgrades.
"Even after adding right-hander Luis Castillo, the AL Central-leading White Sox remain open to bringing in another starting pitcher, said someone briefed on their plans who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss deliberations," Rosenthal reports.

The Chicago Cubs' path to the World Series just got a lot harder this season, as their top competition, the Los Angeles Dodgers, acquired Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers.
It was a blockbuster trade, and one that, while shocking, wasn't a total surprise given how strong the link between Skubal and the Dodgers was. But, from the Cubs' perspective, this trade is a bad one for a few reasons.
Obviously, their road to the World Series is more challenging, but as Jim Bowden of The Athletic highlighted, the Cubs actually helped the Dodgers land Skubal. But, how? It's simple: the top prospect the Dodgers gave up for Skubal initially came from the Cubs.
"So the Dodgers acquired Zyhir Hope from the Cubs for Michael Busch and River Ryan from the Padres for Meatt Beatty and drafted Brady Smith in the 3rd round of '23 and turned them into Tarik Skubal. Got it," Bowden writes.

The teams that fell short in the race for Skubal are now desperate to pivot and acquire one of the top starters remaining on the trade market.
That's where New York comes into the picture with Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta.

It would be a shocker if those two right-handers weren't moved before Monday's deadline. Holmes is essentially a rental. Extension talks between Holmes and the Mets have fizzled and he has a player option for next year that he's likely to decline. Peralta, meanwhile, is set to be a free agent this winter.

Tarik Skubal is being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Detroit Tigers, per multiple reports. Going back to the Tigers in the deal are minor league outfielder Zyhir Hope and minor league righthanded pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
Skubal is the two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner, having led the American League in ERA in both 2024 and 2025. Skubal received a record $32 million salary in arbitration this past season, and is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. So far in 2026, he has a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts covering 96.2 innings, despite spending time on the injured list due to surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
The Dodgers currently have Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Justin Wrobleski at the top of their rotation, and the addition of Skubal gives them a potent top three to head into the playoffs with. They also have Shohei Ohtani, though he is sidelined from pitching currently, and it is up in the air as to whether or not he will be able to pitch again in 2026.
The return for the Tigers is quite impressive for a player who is heading for free agency. Hope, 21, was an 11th round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2023, and was sent to the Dodgers in the Michael Busch trade. A corner outfielder, Hope is #55 on the Baseball America top 100 prospect list and #25 on the MLB Pipeline top 100 list. He is slashing .293/.369/.530 for AA Tulsa this season.
Ryan, who turns 28 later this month, was also an 11th round pick, though by the San Diego Padres in 2021. The Dodgers acquired him for Matt Beaty, and he made it to the majors in 2024, putting up a 1.33 ERA in four starts for the Dodgers. He missed all of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery, and has made just eight appearances, all at AAA, having been on the injured list since mid-June due to a hamstring issue. Both MLB Pipeline and BA have him as a top 10 prospect in a deep Dodgers system, with Pipeline having him at #68 on their top 100 list.

Autonomous trucking developer Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ: AUR) reported a second-quarter net loss of $270 million on $2 million in revenue Wednesday. Executives restated the driverless truck rates behind the two business models the company is selling to carriers and shippers.
Chief Financial Officer David Maday said Aurora's transportation-as-a-service offering carries a per-mile revenue outlook in the $2-plus-per-mile range, while its driver-as-a-service subscription targets $0.85+ per mile. Maday said the company had put both figures out previously. Aurora plans to begin moving customers from the first model to the second in 2027.
The gap between those two numbers is the practical question for any fleet weighing autonomous capacity. Under TaaS, Aurora holds a U.S. Department of Transportation operating authority, controls the truck, carries the insurance, and bills a full-service rate. Under DaaS, according to the company's Form 10-Q, customers "acquire, manage, and maintain fleets directly, while subscribing to the Aurora Driver and a suite of related services."
Aurora's loss amounted to 14 cents a share, wider than the 12-cent average of ****** ysts' estimates. Revenue rose 100% from $1 million a year earlier, which the company attributed in its Form 10-Q to increased utilization, geographical expansion, and higher fuel surcharges.
"Obviously the TaaS deals have a higher per mile revenue outlook because it's the full service," Maday said. "As we've said before, kind of in that $2 plus range, whereas DaaS is targeting the $0.85 plus. There's a substantial difference in TaaS versus DaaS on a revenue side, but there's also a substantial difference on the cost side and on the margin side."
