MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders first place push is much in thanks to the MiLB International League Player of the Week Anthony Volpe leading off its lineup. Volpe won the weekly award after a stellar series against the Worcester Red Sox.
Volpe finished the week 11 of 21 from the plate, hitting .524 against Worcester. The RailRiders infielder hit three doubles, and three home runs in six games. Volpe drove in six runs and scored eight times of his own. He stole five bags over the six-game set, on top of three base on ******* .
Since his returned to the RailRiders lineup Volpe has blasted 10 home runs in a month's time back in Triple-A. His return has aided Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's chase for the second half playoff push. SWB is currently a game out of first place behind Rochester.

The Yankees shut him down from throwing for about six weeks, ending his chances of a promotion to the Majors during the summer's early months.
Lagrange recently began his throwing program, and he's already in the final stages before returning to the mound.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders pulled to within two games of first place with a 9-2 win on Wednesday night over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put up four runs in the first inning, never trailing in the win over the I-Pigs.
Jasson Dominguez started the scoring in the first with a single to right field, bringing in Jarred Kelenic. The next batter J.C. Escarra continued the hit parade with a single to shallow right. That brought in Anthony Volpe, putting runners on the corners for Marco Luciano. The SWB second baseman drove a ball to the wall to bring in Dominguez. Oswaldo Cabrera ended the merry-go-round with a fielder's choice, and a fourth run for the RailRiders.
Yanquiel Fernandez matched Double-R's first four runs, with four runs driven in of his own. Fernandez hit two home runs on Wednesday, his team leading 23rd and 24th of the season. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre DH went 3-for-4 on the night, with two home runs and four RBI.
New York Yankees pitcher Clark Schmidt started the game for the RailRiders. The start was Schmidt's second rehab start since having elbow surgery last July. Schmidt pitched 0.2 innings last Saturday for the Yankees Double-A team.

MOOSIC — Growing up, Shelley Duncan had a passion for baseball. He also had an obsession with leadership, learning about people who are at the top of their field or industry and what makes them special.
Being a manager has allowed the 46-year old to combine those things.
"From a young age, I've always tried to look at the game from the lens of a manager," Duncan said. "Even in my playing career, I didn't take for granted playing for the good managers I played for and tried to learn as much as I can from every one of them, knowing that my career after playing could be longer as a coach or manager. I knew this is where ultimately the real future would be."
In his fourth season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Duncan reaches a milestone Friday night in Worcester. It is his 1,000th game as a minor-league manager.
After his playing days ended in June 2014, Duncan began his managerial career in 2015 in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He spent two seasons with the High-A Hillsboro Hops, one year with the Low-A Visalia Rawhide and one with the Double-A Jackson Generals. He compiled a record of 231-199 and won league championships with Hillsboro in 2015 and Jackson in 2018.

Marissa Shafer battled Irene Smith in a marathon No. 2 singles match, earning a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win that clinched a 3-2 win for West Scranton over Honesdale on Wednesday in a Lackawanna League Division II girls tennis match.
The Shafer-Smith match lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.
"It was super tough," Shafer, a junior, said about rallying back after being down a set in a phone interview. "My muscles were cramping up, but I had fun. I just kept my head up. I had a really good mindset going into the second set. It was mostly my mindset, but also picking up strategies that worked against my opponent. I hydrated a lot, and just told myself in my head that I had this. I tried my best not to be nervous. I had to trust all of my shots and have no hesitation.
"It felt really good to win it. I was really relieved."

The New York Yankees, who've had new injuries repeatedly pop up this season as if they're playing a game of Whac-A-Mole, will welcome the imminent return of three-time All-Star Cody Bellinger. The outfielder told reporters in the Bronx on Saturday that he'll be activated for Sunday's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It's expected to be his first outing with the Yankees since he suffered a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring on July 25. He experienced the setback while running the bases after hitting a double in the eighth inning of a road victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bellinger is coming off his second minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Although he went hitless for the RailRiders on Friday, he saw action in left field. The previous day, he notched a single as the team's designated hitter.

The New York Yankees have added another MLB-caliber arm to their organizational depth as they prepare for the stretch run. Just days after leaving the Kansas City Royals organization, Eli Morgan has found a new home with the Yankees, agreeing to a minor league deal with New York.
The 30-year-old right-hander will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he'll provide the Yankees with another experienced option as they build toward the postseason.

The RailRiders 7-2 loss to Charlotte is the teams sixth loss in the team's last seven games. The loss drops SWB to 25-19 for the second half of the season. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now sits 2.5 games out of first place.
The RailRiders evened the game at two runs a piece in the second inning. Tyler Hardman and Kenedy Corona each driving in a run. Those were the only runs though for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
The Knights took back the lead in the third inning at 4-2, and then extending it to 6-2 in the fourth inning. Both in the third and fourth the runs came off of two-run home runs. Charlotte added one more on in top of the ninth to finish the 7-2 rout.

Shane Smith, still lost, flooded the basepaths with traffic in the bottom half and let the RailRiders swipe the lead right back. Jairo Iriarte took over in the third and immediately served up a two-run homer. By the fifth, Tanner McDougal was getting shelled for four unearned runs, and Charlotte was buried, 8-1. Ouch.
Apparently, though, the Knights offense wasn't interested in going quietly. Charlotte finally came alive with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Junior Perez and four walks, before erupting for four more tallies in the ninth. Mario Camilletti delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double, and Andy Weber added an RBI single to complete the surge and knot things at 8-8. Jaden Woods kept the RailRiders off the board in the ninth to send it to extras, where Rikuu Nishida started at second as the ghost runner. Michael Turner moved him to third with a ground out, and Ryan Galanie brought him home with a sacrifice fly for the 9-8 lead. Garrett Schoenle handled the bottom of the 10th, working around a walk to finish off a remarkable comeback win for the Knights.

BALTIMORE (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger could begin a rehab ******* ignment with Triple-A Scranton on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Yankees manager Aaron Boone hopes left-handed starter Max Fried's second stint on the injured list will be brief.
Bellinger has been on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain since July 26. He said Tuesday he's felt "about as 100 percent as I can give in a non-game setting" in the last few days. He believes he'll play in multiple rehab games.
"I think so," Bellinger said.
A three-time All-Star — including this season — Bellinger is batting .259 with 11 homers in 103 games.

The Yankees southpaw tossed 48 pitches (29 strikes) across 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four batters for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It was an inauspicious start for Rodon. Seaver King took Rodon deep to lead off the game. Rodon bounced back to get the next three batters out to end the first inning. After a 1-2-3 second inning, Rodon ran into trouble in the third. After striking out the first batter of the inning, four batters in a row reached base (a double, two walks and a triple) as Rochester pushed across two more runs.
After Rodon struck out his fourth batter to get the second out of the third, he was pulled.
Rodon would have pitched deeper, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week that the plan was for the southpaw to throw around 50 pitches.

Rochester (66-44) sent nine men to the plate in the opening inning and scored six times. Phillip Glasser and Yohandy Morales scored on consecutive bases-loaded walks by Riley Adams and Sam Petersen before Wallace drove a grand slam to left field for his third homer of the season.
The RailRiders trimmed the deficit to 6-2 on Anthony Volpe's two-run homer in the third, but Rochester answered in the fourth. Wallace singled, advanced on a walk and hit-by-pitch, then scored when Seaver King reached on a forceout.

Scott Gower is returning to high school athletics.
The former administrator, who spent the last three years in sales, was appointed athletic director at Abington Heights High School on Wednesday, filling the vacancy left by Enrico Mastroianni, who left to become the director of athletics at Penn State Scranton in early July.
Gower previously served as athletic director at Scranton Prep and at Keystone College before working at BSN Sports, a sports apparel and equipment company.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the Abington Heights community at a time when they are coming off a historic year of athletic success," Gower, 42, said. "I want to thank the school board and administration for the opportunity to be part of the athletic program that they support through the resources they provide to the student-athletes and coaches.
"Abington Heights has a deep tradition of excellence both in the classroom and on the athletic fields and courts. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, families, staff, and community and working with them to continue that tradition."

When Anthony Volpe reports to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, manager Shelley Duncan anticipates the shortstop to see some action at second base and possibly third base.
"There's a good chance of that," Duncan said. "We'll see when he gets here. Us as an organization, we'll have a plan in place for him. Anthony will be a part of that plan. We'll move forward accordingly for what's best for him and what's best for the organization."

Michael Mahon, Ph.D., is eager and excited about returning to his alma mater as the athletic director at Scranton Prep.
Mahon, a former teacher, principal, superintendent, higher education administrator, and coach, replaces Grey Simpson, who resigned after the season and will be a teacher and coach at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, the school announced in a press release on Monday.
A 1986 graduate of Scranton Prep, Mahon excelled as a football player and catcher for the baseball team. He helped lead the Cavaliers to a District 2 Class 3A championship and a first-round playoff game against Montoursville and its pitching ace, Mike Mussina.
In college, Mahon played and coached baseball at the University of Scranton. He started his professional career as a science teacher at Scranton Prep, also served as a coach at the high school level, and then embarked on a long career in administration.
Mahon earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and a Master of Science in School Administration from the University of Scranton, a Ph.D. in Human Development with a concentration in Administration from Marywood University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Max Fried returned on Wednesday looking like a good version of Max Fried. That's a nice development for the New York Yankees.
The All-Star left-hander made his comeback from the injured list after two months out due to a bone bruise in his pitching elbow. Despite a limited pitch count, he mowed down the Pittsburgh Pirates across five scoreless innings on Wednesday.
His final line: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts and 57 pitches.
Fried, who finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting last year, hadn't pitched since May 15. He made only one rehab start, allowing two runs in three innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and then skipped a second scheduled outing in favor of returning to the Yankees on Wednesday.
Fried's stuff certainly seemed to be back, as his four-seam fastball averaged 96.2 mph, above his usual marks in both his 2026 starts before his injury (94.7 mph) and the 2025 season (95.9), per Baseball Savant. His whiff rate of 37% is tied for the 10th-best mark in a game for the Yankees this season (min. 50 pitches).

The All-Star left-hander made his comeback from the injured list after two months out due to a bone bruise in his pitching elbow. Despite a limited pitch count, he mowed down the Pittsburgh Pirates across five scoreless innings on Wednesday.
His final line: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts and 57 pitches.
Fried, who finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting last year, hadn't pitched since May 15. He made only one rehab start, allowing two runs in three innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and then skipped a second scheduled outing in favor of returning to the Yankees on Wednesday.
Fried's stuff certainly seemed to be back, as his four-seam fastball averaged 96.2 mph, above his usual marks in both his 2026 starts before his injury (94.7 mph) and the 2025 season (95.9), per Baseball Savant. His whiff rate of 37% is tied for the 10th-best mark in a game for the Yankees this season (min. 50 pitches).

They still have a chance to split the doubleheader and win the series as they take the field less than three hours after the final out of Game 1, and they’ll do so as Max Fried makes his long-awaited return from injury.

Fried will face off against Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler. The 23-year-old righty isn’t very subtle, mainly trying to blow you away with a four-seamer that averages 99 mph. He backs up that heater with a slider and a changeup. Expect the Yankees to have a patient approach against the pitcher with the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. In 18 starts, Chandler is 3-8 with a 4.77 ERA (92 ERA+), 4.59 FIP, and 85 strikeouts in 94.1 innings.
The Yankees make three changes to the line from the day game. Anthony Volpe replaces José Caballero at shortstop which should ease tensions with this umpiring crew after the incident involving his pitch clock manipulation earlier today. Paul Goldschmidt gets the start at first moving Ben Rice to DH and Spencer Jones to the bench. Ali Sánchez replaces Austin Wells behind the plate.

"So for the opposite to be put out there, it's just confusing. I've never, ever felt that way."

Each time Enrico Mastroianni visits the Abington Heights High School Sports Complex to support his kids in their athletic endeavors, he can be very proud not only of their achievements but also of the facility where they are competing.
For the past four years, Matroianni has served as the athletic director, coordinating championship-level programs while also being at the forefront of the school’s transition with state-of-the-art upgrades that embody a commitment to excellence.
Now, the 49-year-old is going to embark on a new challenge at the collegiate level.
Last week, Mastroianni resigned from Abington Heights and will become the director of athletics and recreation at Penn State Scranton. His new role was announced in a release by interim Regional Chancellor of Penn State Scranton David Callejo Pérez on Tuesday evening.
“Obviously, over the past four years, Abington Heights has had tremendous success on and off the field, and I wanted to strengthen and elevate our visibility while also creating an outstanding experience for student-athletes,” Mastroianni said. “I am most proud of, aside from the wins, the impact that we made in our community. The improvements to the facilities and the role in creating lasting memories are what the student-athletes take away from their time in sports.
