Former Charlotte Hornets forward Taj Gibson announced his retirement Monday after 17 seasons in the NBA. Gibson was recently rostered by the Memphis Grizzlies but was later traded to the New Orleans Pelicans and was subsequently waived. Gibson spent one season with the Hornets, playing in Charlotte during the 2024-25 campaign. In 37 appearances, the former USC forward averaged 2.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 0.6 **** ists, 0.2 steals and 0.5 blocks. While with the franchise, Gibson served as a veteran presence and particularly helped recent Hustle Award winner Moussa Diabate in his development.
Throughout his 17-year career, Gibson played 1,012 games, averaging 8.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 0.9 **** ists, 0.5 steals and one block. He made the All-Rookie Team during the 2009-10 season and finished top-10 in Sixth Man of the Year voting three times. Following his retirement, Gibson agreed to join the team that drafted him (Chicago Bulls) as an **** istant coach.

Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears enjoyed an incredible offensive performance in their 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. However, they are keeping their eye on the ball with some issues they must address as the 2026 campaign is underway.
Williams filled up the stat sheet as he enjoyed his activity in the offense. He completed 21 out of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while racking up 10 rushes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Williams reflected on the performance after the game, per reporter Chris Emma. He surprisingly said this game will be the team's worst as he anticipates stronger displays throughout the coming weeks this year.
"That's who we want to be this week. We got to go clean up. We want to be truthers. Obviously, this is going to be our kind of worst game. I know points don't necessarily show that, but execution, the blocking, the penalties, all these different things," Williams said.

Major League Soccer has rescheduled FC Cincinnati's match against D.C. United for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. ET at TQL Stadium.
The match, originally scheduled for Sept. 5, was rescheduled due to pitch conditions and resulting player safety concerns created by heavy rains and inclement weather in the Cincinnati area.
Both teams will then fly to the Washington D.C. area and play again three days later at Audi Field.
The new kickoff date adds to an already congested stretch for FC Cincinnati following an upcoming FIFA international window. They will play seven matches in 21 days from Oct. 10 to Oct. 31. Right before the D.C. doubleheader, Cincinnati will host archrival Columbus Oct. 18, then right after will play at Inter Miami Oct. 28.
Cincinnati dropped to ninth in the MLS Eastern Conference, occupying the last playoff spot, following a 3-3 draw with Charlotte Sept. 12, and now plays its next three games on the road, where the team is 1-6-5 in MLS play. Cincinnati next plays at Houston, who is second place in the Western Conference, 8:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Another round of layoffs has brought dramatic cuts to a city's local newspaper.
On Monday, Hornets beat reporter Rod Boone of the Charlotte Observer shared on social media that the paper eliminated his position, along with seven colleagues, in the latest round of McClatchy cuts.
Boone said that the news came "less than 48 hours after being told corporate had given the green light to bring back my podcast they whacked two years earlier." He also noted that the cuts meant that the paper will no longer have a writer dedicated to covering the Hornets, a first since the team's inception in 1987.
The cuts are just the latest in a series of layoffs made at papers controlled by McClatchy. The Miami Herald also laid off staffers this week, including sportswriter Greg Cote, who went back five decades with the paper. The Sacramento Bee was also caught in the wreckage, losing its sports department entirely.
Media layoffs have only become more common in recent years, and local newspapers are especially suffering. They have also often come with a shocking lack of respect from those in charge of deciding who stays and who goes. As Boone says, he got the news of his release just days before his fifth anniversary at the paper, and just days after he was ****** ured that he was clear to bring his podcast back on the air. Similarly, Cote's dismissal from the Herald came after 54 years of service, and he got the news on his birthday.

The 2026 regular season is just a few days away from beginning for the Chicago Bears as they make their final preparations before heading to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers. It's a battle of two surprise division winners from a year ago, with each team hoping to get a jump start to the season.
For the Bears, they officially turned a corner last year during Ben Johnson's first season as head coach, becoming a dangerous team loaded on offense with talented pass catchers and a punishing rushing attack. Florida basketball senior guard Denzel Aberdeen is taking his case to return to the basketball court to the judicial courts.
Aberdeen has filed a temporary injunction for a fifth season of eligibility to play for the Florida Gators, according to a report from the Field of 68.
"Denzel Aberdeen, a senior at Florida, should be allowed to compete as a student-athlete under the NCAA's 5-in-5 rule," Aberdeen's attorney, Jesse Panuccio, said in a statement provided to the Field of 68. "But the NCAA has announced an unwritten exception to its rule that strips Class of 2022 students from this policy, even though they competed for years against fifth-, sixth-, and sometimes seventh-year seniors who received Covid-era eligibility waivers. The NCAA's decision violates its contractual commitment to fairness to all student-athletes, and we have sued to vindicate Aberdeen's rights and get him back on the court as he finishes his degree at UF."
As a member of the Class of 2022, Aberdeen wasn't grandfathered into the NCAA's new 5-for-5 rule, which allows for college athletes to play for five seasons within five years of eligibility.
On July 31, a Colorado court ruling by U.S. District Court judge Charlotte Sweeney (Tyson, Wisne v NCAA) granted an extra year of eligibility to Aberdeen and every athlete in the 2022 class without requiring an NCAA waiver. But on August 22, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay in the Wisne ruling, which now places the onus back on athletes to fight for their NCAA eligibility in state courts.

The 2024-25 Boston Celtics set the NBA single-season three-point record with 1,457 makes across 82 games. Three different Celtics players made at least 250 threes that season, something no team had ever seen before. The question heading into 2026-27 is whether the Hornets can break the NBA three-point record.
Analyst Tom Haberstroh specifically named Charlotte as a genuine contender. Looking at the roster, it is not hard to see why.
" I think this Charlotte Hornets team, even though they lost LaMelo Ball, who was at times the most high-volume scorer, shooter in the NBA from downtown, still, I think this team, dude, I think they have a chance to break the three-point record next year," Haberstroh said on The Kevin O'Connor Show. "You got Coby White, who's a 95, 96 percentile volume three-point shooter. Good three-point shooter off the dribble. Kon Knueppel, we already know; the fact that he led the league in threes as a rookie is insane. Brandon Miller, also a high-volume three-point shooter."

The Charlotte Knights stumbled to an 11-4 loss to the Buffalo Bisons in a game that remained competitive for five innings before spiraling wildly out of control.
Adisyn Coffey took the mound as an opener for Charlotte, making just his third start of the season. It quickly became the Lenyn Sosa revenge game. The former White Sox infielder greeted Coffey with a leadoff solo shot in the top of the third. Coffey retired the next two hitters, but a single and an RBI double followed, giving Buffalo a 2-0 edge.
The Knights answered in the bottom half of the inning. Rikuu Nishida drew a two-out walk, and Riley Unroe brought him home with a triple to trim the deficit to one.
After Peyton Pallette got the final out of the third inning, Huascar Brazobán followed Coffey and turned in a successful inning of rehab work, surrendering only one hit in a scoreless fourth. Tanner McDougal took over in the fifth and faced the minimum, setting the stage for Charlotte to pull even in the bottom half when Junior Perez launched a solo shot to knot the score at 2-2.
Unfortunately, that was as good as the night would get for the Knights.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Richard Trang booked his tickets soon after the NFL announced the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers season opener would be played in Australia, and was one of the thousands of Americans who made their first trip Down Under to coincide with the game.
An accountant who is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina but now lives in San Francisco, Trang soaked up the atmosphere on a bright, sunny Friday morning at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground.
"It's been great seeing all these red jerseys," Trang said ahead of the game. "I love the mutual respect between Niners fans and Australians. We love that the Niners came a week early, and Australians feel the same way."
The 49ers arrived last week and took time in Melbourne to prepare for the game. The Rams arrived a day ahead of time.
Nick and Dorcas Mwangi, who live in Los Angeles, described the chance to see the Rams play in Australia as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Over the past few days, several national college football publications and websites have released power ranking lists for all 138 FBS college football teams following Week 0 and Week 1 of the 2026 college football season. None of these sites have been particularly kind to Rutgers following their season-opening 37-21 loss to UMass, with almost all of them dropping the Scarlet Knights by double-digit rankings. The most brutal of these sites was The Athletic, which dropped Rutgers 57 spots from 79 to 136.
First off, the ******* le of the article is "Re-ranking 138 college football teams after Week 1: LSU starts on top, Rutgers hits a new low"- not a fun start by any means. The rest of the parts of the article that mention Rutgers aren't much better.
"The most shocking win was, of course, UMass' 37-21 victory at Rutgers, ending a 16-game losing streak and 23-game Football Bowl Subdivision losing streak. For that, the Minutemen rise to No. 100. It's the first time since early in the 2025 season that UMass is not ranked last, and it's the first time in 10 years of these rankings that UMass is inside the top 100. The Minutemen's previous high was No. 102 late in the 2018 season. Congrats to UMass," said Athletic writer Chris Vannini in the article.
"Rutgers falls all the way to No. 136 for that blowout loss to UMass, which wasn't as close as the 16-point final margin would indicate. This is the new lowest position for a Power 4 team in 10 years of these rankings," said Athletic writer Chris Vannini in the article.
While Rutgers' performance against UMass is inexcusable and has put the Knights in the same ranking bracket as teams like Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Utah State and Charlotte in the eyes of the Athletic. While Rutgers' loss to UMass is an incredibly tough pill to swallow, being rated in the bottom three teams in the country still seems a little low. Even a terrible Big Ten team should be able to stay out of there.

An independent energy development company and a long-time manufacturer of wood products have signed an agreement to develop geothermal projects in Washington and Oregon.Hexagon Energy and Weyerhaeuser Co. on September 10 said they have closed a deal covering that could provide an estimated 3 GW of geothermal power generation capacity in the Pacific Northwest. The land is part of Weyerhaeuser's portfolio of holdings. The company is one of the largest private owners of timberland in North America."Geothermal energy represents an emerging opportunity to provide clean and reliable, around-the-clock power, and our ownership presents a unique platform to evaluate that potential in the Pacific Northwest," said Kendall Fountain, vice president of Energy and Natural Resources for Weyerhaeuser. "This agreement supports the continued growth of our Climate Solutions business while aligning with our commitment to responsible land stewardship, sustainability and long-term value creation."
Hexagon Energy under the agreement will develop geothermal projects on Weyerhaeuser's landholdings in the two states. Hexagon said it has leased geothermal rights on about 145,000 acres across Washington and Oregon."We are excited to partner with Weyerhaeuser to develop this significant geothermal resource and bring abundant, clean, baseload energy to the Pacific Northwest." said Matthew Hantzmon, CEO of Hexagon Energy. "Our team is grateful that Weyerhaeuser entrusted us to unlock this valuable ***** et for them."

OXFORD — Ole Miss football is ranked No. 11 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which was released Sept. 8.
It's one spot lower than the preseason poll. The Rebels were No. 10 in the initial rankings.
Ole Miss (1-0) is coming off a 41-38 win on the road at Louisville on Sept. 6. The Rebels won on a game-winning 48-yard field goal from kicker Lucas Carneiro. Coach Pete Golding said the Rebels have plenty of things to clean up.
Ole Miss will host Charlotte (0-1) in Week 2 on Sept. 12 (6:45 p.m., ESPN2). Charlotte lost 43-41 to The Citadel in Week 1 in a game that went to three overtimes.

The University of Cincinnati send a strongly-worded letter to former guard **** le James, the son of former NFL star running back Edgerrin James, telling him to stop using the school's name and likeness.
"As you are no longer a member of the University of Cincinnati men's basketball program, you are no longer authorized to use, represent, or commercially promote the University of Cincinnati basketball program, including the use of the University's name, logos, uniforms, jerseys, or other team-related likenesses," a message from the school read.
James responded, "I have my own merch I made. I don't need y'all jerseys, and [expletive] Cincinnati for all I care."
The comment came just a few weeks after the Charlotte basketball program issued a roster update without the guard. Now his father, a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, is adding unfortunate context to the situation.

Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, are now in Year 7 and Year 4 respectively at Lambrook School in Berkshire, a short drive from their Windsor home.
However, the biggest change this autumn comes for 13-year-old Prince George, who is starting at Eton College, following in the footsteps of his father and his uncle, Prince Harry.

Kate Middleton is reportedly encouraging Prince William to let their children build a relationship with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's kids. The change in approach comes as the Sussexes settle back in England. The move has brought the cousins closer than they have been in years.
Prince William and Kate Middleton's children reportedly did not meet Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children during the Sussexes' recent U.K. visit. But according to a source speaking to Closer, Kate now believes the situation could become harder to avoid. The source claims Kate has told William that the children should have the chance to know their cousins.
When Archie and Lilibet lived across the Atlantic, the distance made contact easier to avoid, the insider said. With Harry and Meghan now spending more time in Britain, however, that separation could become much more difficult to maintain. Harry, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet reportedly arrived in Birmingham, England, by private jet on Tuesday, August 26. The reported situation could also affect how William and Kate explain the family rift to their own children.
Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have grown up hearing about the importance of family relationships, according to the source. The insider believes the children may eventually struggle to understand why they remain distant from their Sussex cousins. "It's going to be very difficult to explain and justify" the estrangement, the source claimed. The insider added that William and Kate have always stressed the importance of getting along. That could make the ongoing divide even harder to explain now that Harry and Meghan live much closer.
The reported olive branch does not mean Kate expects William to erase everything that happened between the brothers. Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in 2020. The couple later spoke publicly about their experience within the royal family and released their Netflix docuseries, "Harry & Meghan," which explored the tensions surrounding their departure.
