BALTIMORE (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger could begin a rehab ******* ignment with Triple-A Scranton on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Yankees manager Aaron Boone hopes left-handed starter Max Fried's second stint on the injured list will be brief.
Bellinger has been on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain since July 26. He said Tuesday he's felt "about as 100 percent as I can give in a non-game setting" in the last few days. He believes he'll play in multiple rehab games.
"I think so," Bellinger said.
A three-time All-Star — including this season — Bellinger is batting .259 with 11 homers in 103 games.

Yankees have a $138 million problem that might be resolved soon originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees have been struggling a little bit lately, even though their 69-55 record would suggest otherwise.
They're 7-7 in August, which isn't bad, but for a team trying to catch the Tampa Bay Rays and stay in front of the Boston Red Sox, it's not good enough. One of the big reasons for the middling play? The $138 million on the injured list.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report called out that $138M figure as the one statistic that has defined the season. It's also the one statistic that's making things a lot more challenging for the Yankees lately, as this stacked injured list is posing a real problem.
"New York Yankees (69-55): $138M presently on the IL," Miller writes. "The Yankees have seven players with a luxury tax of at least $22M. From that group, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger and Carlos Rodon are presently on the IL."

TORONTO — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he misspoke when he said injured outfielder Cody Bellinger would begin a rehab ****** ignment on Tuesday.
Boone corrected himself following a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays, saying Bellinger will go through another round of workouts before starting his rehab ****** ignment later in the week. There's no setback, Boone said, just a miscommunication.
Bellinger has been sidelined since July 26 because of a strained left hamstring.
Bellinger re-signed with the Yankees last winter for $162.5 million over five years. He was the MVP of the 2026 All-Star Game in Philadelphia. Bellinger is batting .259 with 11 homers and 53 RBIs in 102 games this season.
Three-time MVP Aaron Judge is scheduled to throw and run in New York on Monday, Boone said. Judge hasn't played since May 31 because of a broken right rib. On Friday, Judge threw for the first time since going on the injured list.

Associated Press | Ian Harrison: Cody Bellinger is set to begin a rehab ****** ignment later this week after going through another round of workouts, though an exact day is yet to be determined. Boone had said earlier on Sunday that he would begin his rehab on Tuesday, but clarified after the extra inning win that he had misspoke. There was no setback in the time that had lapsed between the two statements, just miscommunication. Still, Bellinger is closer to returning than he was yesterday, and that's what's important.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: After his statement was released saying goodbye on Old Timers' Day, it seemed the news was inevitable. Still when news broke yesterday that Tommy John had passed, it didn't make the news any less sad. After spending his final days in hospice care, John leaves a legacy obviously most synonymous with the famous UCL surgery named after him, but also for what he achieved on the field. If you haven't already, be sure to check out John's tribute to him from yesterday as well.
New York Magazine | Adam Elder: When the team announced last week that Apollo Sports Capital, a private equity investor, acquired a stake in the team (up to 15 percent) for $2.6 billion, many started to wonder what that meant for the Yankees, the sport, and how it could possibly affect fans. Unfortunately, there's no clear answer yet for how the Steinbrenner family will use this cash influx, but given that these aren't his father's Yankees, it seems unlikely that Hal will put his investment back onto the field. Worst case scenario is also that they get access to a full private equity playbook of cutting costs (lower payroll, tiered memberships for fans, more expensive tickets and YES subscriptions) and implement that. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
MLB.com | Max Ralph: If you're wondering what Ryan Weathers has been doing differently to put together his recent string of impressive and successful starts, it's that he's been using his most intriguing pitch, the four-seamer, the least among the pitches in his ****** nal. The timing of this piece could've been dicey since it was published late Saturday night, but Weathers backed this up by spinning a 7.1 inning gem, allowing just one run.

Tennessee ****** ans coach Robert Saleh announced that third-year defensive end Jaylen Harrell and rookie tight end Jaren Kanak will both be put on season-ending injured reserve with injuries sustained in the preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 13.
Harrell, who logged 4.5 sacks for the ****** ans as a rotational outside linebacker in 2025, tore his ACL and Kanak, the ****** ans' seventh-round pick in 2026, tore his pectoral muscle.
Without Harrell, the ****** ans' depth pieces off the defensive edge don't have too much name recognition. Veteran free agent adds Malik Herring and Earnest Brown IV are possibilities to fill the spot Harrell leaves behind. The ****** ans did fill the room with new blood atop the depth chart, though, with Jermaine Johnson II, Jacob Martin and first-round pick Keldric Faulk joining former second-round pick Oluwafemi Oladejo as the heart of the rotation.
Kanak had been getting play as a rotational tight end with the second- and third-team offenses and also played multiple positions in the backfield like fullback and H-back. Most of Kanak's use was expected to be on special teams. Without Kanak, the ****** ans' options at tight end behind starters Gunnar Helm and Daniel Bellinger include David Martin-Robinson, Kylen Granson and Joel Wilson.
In other injury news, defensive linemen John Franklin-Myers and Jackie Marshall returned to practice on Aug. 15 for individual drills after missing time. Neither participated in team activities.

The Seattle Mariners have stuck a fork trident in themselves. And yet, they must continue. 43 games stand between Seattle and the finish line. Laying an egg on a crucial and emotionally charged homestand means the Mariners now enter their most daunting road trip of the season needing a swathe of unlikely victories to bring any semblance of expectations back to their season. That starts tonight at Yankee Stadium, where the battered Bronx Bombers lurk in a measured kinship with the M's in resentment of the surging Tampa Bay Rays.
Get prepared for this three game set with the Series Preview from Jake and Isabelle here.
Series Preview: Mariners (56-63) at Yankees (66-52)
The absence of Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger has undercut the overwhelming nature of the Yankees lineup, but the arrival of Luis Garcia Jr. from the Nationals at the trade deadline, along with lefty-killer Heliot Ramos and rookie George Lombard Jr., has kept the forces behind Benito Arroz formidable. Seattle will face two lefties this series, starting with Ryan Weathers whose groundball stuff has been highly effective as a back of the rotation arm for New York.

New York Daily News | Gary Philips: Jazz Chisholm Jr. has lost himself a considerable amount of money in his pending free agency with his downright bad 2026. The Yankee second baseman has managed just a 92 wRC+ with a career high strikeout rate, and of course self-proclaimed that he'd be able to land a 50/50 season in spring training. Jazz hasn't been the only problem with the team's offense of course, but he's been a major contributor — or rather, non-contributor. If nothing else he seems to at least be aware of it, but awareness is different from adjustment.
NJ.com | Adam Zagoria: Tommy John released a very sad public farewell to the Yankee franchise and fanbase over the weekend, as the 83 year old enters hospice care with bladder cancer. Dr. Chris Ahmad, the club's head doctor, penned his own touching open letter to the man on Monday, acknowledging John's place in baseball history and remarkable determination to return to the game despite the shortest of odds.
New York Post | Ethan Spears ($): The Yankees will not have a clear path through the AL without Aaron Judge returning and hitting like we're used to seeing Aaron Judge hit. Cody Bellinger will also likely need to be back, patrolling left field and hitting cleanup. However, the emergence of both George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones as potential lineup-lengtheners give the club a couple more options, although relying on rookies — including one with just five games under his belt — to be reliable contributors through their first taste of MLB baseball is a risky endevor.
FanGraphs | Jay Jaffe: Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer have been contemporaries atop the "best pitchers in baseball" list over the last decade or so, and they mirrored each other in strikeout accomplishments over the weekend. Scherzer fanned the 3,516th victim of his career on Saturday, moving into the top-10 in all of baseball history, and moments later Cole sat down the 1,000th batter as a Yankee, the fastest to do so in pinstripes, needing just 139 games. Both pitchers are closer to their enshrinement in Cooperstown than they are to having lost prospect status, but we can still mark the milestones when they come.

Austin Wells is not having a great season, and the New York Yankees reportedly looked into adding a catching upgrade at the trade deadline.
The Yankees were unable to land a star catcher at the trade deadline like the other catcher-needy teams in their division, but Wells has started to heat up. Since July 30, Wells has played in eight games, starting seven of them.
In that span, he's gone 6-for-17 with three doubles and a home run. Getting Wells going could be huge for the Yankees, as they are currently without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger. Ali Sánchez has started to get some more opportunities, but Wells could reclaim his at-bats with a hot streak.
Last season, Wells had a .712 OPS. It was not the best, but far better than what the Yankees have gotten out of him this year. Wells had a 1.086 OPS in the World Baseball Classic, playing for the Dominican Republic, and many fans thought that could carry into the regular season.

Yankees get bad news from rival clubs on Jasson Dominguez trade value originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are running into a bit of a problem, and it's not necessarily a bad one to have. With Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, Heliot Ramos, Spencer Jones, and Jasson Dominguez, plus others, the outfield is stacked.
This club is likely going to need to shake up the outfield in the offseason, and if they're going to ship a few players out, Dominguez seems to be an obvious trade chip.
However, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the trade value for Dominguez, in the eyes of rival MLB clubs, has "plummeted," and the former top prospect isn't nearly as valuable as he once was.
"It's time for the Yankees to trade former prized prospect Jasson Dominguez, but rival clubs insist that his trade value has plummeted," Nightengale reports.

Yankees receive 'fans are still upset' trade deadline award from ESPN originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees added two new players to their lineup at the trade deadline.
First baseman Luis Garcia Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos should help New York's offense while Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton are injured.
"One of our first areas of need was to try to upgrade the offense in any way, shape or form while waiting for important players to come back off the IL," general manager Brian Cashman told reporters. "Ramos crushes left-handed pitching, García crushes right-handed pitching ... [manager] Aaron Boone has a better chance to match up than he did yesterday."
What Cashman said about the Yankees' new acquisitions is accurate. Manager Aaron Boone's lineup is much better with those two players.

Grading Yankees trade deadline 2026: How New York fared with deals for Luis Garcia Jr., Heliot Ramos originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are always under a microscope, and that's especially the case during the trade deadline.
With fans expecting a World Series every year, the Yankees are usually under pressure to make significant additions to their roster. With Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger all on the injured list, the Yankees had a bunch of holes on the roster that have been pretty noticeable.
Ahead of the 2026 trade deadline, New York made a few moves to upgrade its offense and reshuffle its bullpen. Whether those moves will be enough depends on how the new additions play down the stretch, as the Yankees fight for the AL East crown.
Here's a look at how the Yankees did at the trade deadline.

The tight end position is not the ***** iest position in football, but they deserve to be highlighted too. Tight ends have evolved over the years from being a blocking receiver to absolute every down units who can block, catch the ball in tight ***** es, and run like wide receivers. Some have switched area codes this offseason, so let's take a look at who will contribute immediately at their new home as part of our "old faces, different places" series.
Isaiah Likely - New York Giants
Likely will more than likely (no pun intended) have the most targets this season from the tight end position. Jaxson Dart is still young and will often look for a security blanket.
Daniel Bellinger - Tennessee ***** ans
It should be a smooth transition for Bellinger, as his former head coach in New York, Brian Daboll, is now the ***** ans' offensive coordinator.

The MLB trade deadline keeps sending shockwaves through the league, and the Yankees just made the biggest splash. New York secured Luis García Jr. from the Nationals to fix a lineup that has struggled without its stars. This deal brings a massive offensive boost right when the team needs it most. The Yankees are clearly buying now, and García is the centerpiece of that strategy.
Manager Aaron Boone knows the roster needs depth, especially with Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton out. García Jr. leads the National League with a .560 slugging percentage, a stat that screams power for the short porch in right field. He will not just fill a hole; he will change how the offense attacks every pitcher. This acquisition is a direct response to the team's lackluster production this season.
ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the news that the Yankees sent a package of four prospects to Washington for the infielder. MLB.According to reports, the roster features pitchers Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert, and Jake Bird. That is a heavy price in young arms, but the return on a hitter with García's current form makes sense. The Nationals will get these four players to help their future, while the Yankees get immediate help for their playoff push.
Somerset teammates saw Jack Cebert say farewell during a match versus the Richmond Flying Squirrels, signaling his departure from the system. In 104 games this season, García Jr. has hit 23 home runs, a career high, along with 20 doubles and five triples. He is batting .283 with an .873 OPS, proving he can drive the ball consistently. A wRC+ of 134 proves he ranks among the National League's top hitters currently.
García doesn't walk much, sporting only a 4.While his walk rate sits at 3 percent, he maintains a high enough hit frequency to reach base adequately. This season's 93 games at first base have caused a logjam involving Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt. He also played 129 games at second base last season, where Jazz Chisholm Jr. currently sits. Jack Curry of YES Network observed that García should mainly fill first base or DH roles against right-handers to boost his effectiveness.

CHICAGO - Did these last two days on the South Side alter anything in the Yankees' trade deadline strategy?
In dropping a pair of extra-inning games to the White Sox, ending with Thursday afternoon's 2-1, 11-inning loss, it was all about the Yanks' inability to gain any offensive traction.
That's been a team theme since mid-June, and there are four shopping days left to improve this lineup – now missing the injured Cody Bellinger (hamstring), in addition to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton – before Monday's 6 p.m. MLB trade deadline.
The Yankee front office's response will shadow over everything this weekend at Wrigley Field, as the Yanks continue their Windy City week with three games vs. the Cubs.
And these last two games couldn't have gone worse against the White Sox, with the Yanks' failure to fully support their starters, and a relief corps on fumes.

ESPN | Jorge Castillo: The two New York teams are expected to have wildly different trade deadlines, with the Yankees presumed to be buyers and the Mets perhaps the biggest sellers. While there's a couple possible deals to be had between the two clubs — ****** o, Luke Weaver? — the largest possible splashes for the Yankees look like they could come from the West Coast. The San Diego Padres offer two relievers that could reinforce the bullpen, and the Angels feature both Zack Neto and Reid Detmers as alluring trade targets.
FanGraphs | Jay Jaffe: With Cody Bellinger out 4-6 weeks with a hamstring strain, the Yankee lineup and outfield are starting to look pretty bald. The team is already suffering significantly without Aaron Judge in the lineup, and while they still have a chance to win the AL East, they need someone to step up and start hitting, or they have an increased need to bring in an impact bat before the Trade Deadline.
Front Office Sports | Eric Fisher: As a longtime lover of MLB.tv, I get to benefit from what might be sports' best livestreaming experience. From what I've heard from New York locals, the Gotham Sports App has not been a very good livestreaming experience. The platform has repeatedly had playback, UI, and general quality issues over the past two seasons, and it seems it is being sunsetted by the YES and MSG networks. Streaming service DAZN is being tapped as the replacement for Gotham Sports, and I'll keep using MLB.tv.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: The Yankees announced who will be coming back to the Bronx on August 8th for the 78th edition of Old-Timers' Day. Hall of Famers Joe Torre and Mariano Rivera lead the way, and they'll be joined by Monument Park honorees Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte. The first-time Old-Timers are Dellin Betances (born in 1988, gulp), Todd Frazier, David Weathers, and Adam Ottavino (who just pitched last year). Check out the full list!
TSN: If you know me, you know I'm a born hater. I want Shohei Ohtani to grow old and die warm in a bed surrounded by loved ones and I hope he has a rock in his shoe every single time he steps on a baseball field. Yesterday was a win for the haters, as Alek Manoah was released by the Angels. One imagines Gerrit Cole opened a particularly special bottle of wine last night's game with the White Sox.

Yes, they'll be playing an Old-Timers' Day game at the Yankees' annual All-Star studded event.
No, Derek Jeter is not part of the roster.
But nine other Monument Park inductees are scheduled to be at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 8 – Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill, Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry.
Hideki Matsui, the 2009 World Series MVP, highlights the list of attendees, along with Orlando "El Duque'' Hernandez, Bucky Dent, Roy White, David Cone, Dwight Gooden and Chris Chambliss.
Also scheduled to attend are David Weathers and Clay Bellinger, the fathers of current Yankees Ryan Weathers and Cody Bellinger.

The New York Yankees offense is struggling right now, and Cody Bellinger's injury only makes things worse.
The Yankees are currently without Aaron Judge, Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. On top of that, they seem to have no actual solution for third base and shortstop, where Anthony Volpe and Ryan McMahon continue to struggle. Knowing Judge, Bellinger and Stanton could return soon, the Yankees are unlikely to add a superstar outfielder or designated hitter. However, adding an infielder could do wonders for the offense if that infielder were Luis Arraez.
Luckily for the Yankees, the San Francisco Giants will be sellers at the deadline, and Arraez is a rental they could look to deal away. He is hitting .326 with an .811 OPS on the year. He has improved his slugging while maintaining a high average. Not to mention, he is having an elite year defensively at second base. Defense was always seen as a downside for Arraez, but that is not the case this year.
How would Arraez fit in on the Yankees? Well, for starters, he would slot in at second base. That would allow the Yankees to move Chisholm to third base or shortstop, getting rid of either Volpe or McMahon as a regular. McMahon has already started to lose at-bats, so perhaps it's time the Yankees make a permanent change.

The Yankees got some of the worst news possible when MRI scans revealed that Cody Bellinger had suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in Saturday's win over the Phillies and will likely miss 4-to-6 weeks. As it happens, it is from that very same game, an inning prior to the injury, that we find our nominee for At-bat of the Week, Jasson Domínguez crushing a solo home run off José Alvarado.
We join Domínguez leading off the seventh on Saturday night in Philadelphia. The Yankees are clinging to a 2-1 lead courtesy of an Austin Wells solo bomb and Bellinger RBI single. However, the Phillies have their flame throwing lefty Alvarado in the game and the dangerous top of their order due up in the bottom half of the frame, so the Yankees would love to tack on another insurance run.
There is no mystery to how Alvarado is going to attack you, the lefty throwing the fastball 97.3 percent of the time. The one wrinkle he introduces is the type of fastball he's going to throw, using the sinker about two-thirds of the time and the cutter about one-third of the time. He goes with his primary offering to start things off here.
View Link
Domínguez takes this 96 mph sinker for a called strike one. You might wonder how he could take a pitch right down the middle. The camera angle doesn't quite do this pitch justice, but this sinker starts about a half-foot in off the plate before its 16 inches of arm-side run carries it back into the zone. It's therefore easy to see how a hitter might give up early on a pitch initially aimed toward him.

The New York Yankees' offense is missing some key bats right now, but their starting rotation is still one of the best in baseball.
Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole are an elite trio to have in a rotation. Carlos Rodón will return soon as well, but the Yankees may be interested in making the group even better. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Detroit Tigers are "super close" to making Tarik Skubal available, and MLB insider Jim Bowden has been told the Yankees would pursue him.
"If the Tigers were to trade Tarik Skubal, (the Yankees) will play there," Bowden said on the Foul Territory Network.
A rotation featuring Skubal, Schlittler, Fried and Cole would be a nightmare for any team in a postseason series. Pair that with a healthy offense that has Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, and the Yankees are favorites in the American League.

The Yankees overcame Max Fried's season-low-tying start of three innings with four-run frames in the fourth and eighth to take Monday's series-opening game at the American League East-leading Chicago White Sox, a 9-4 win, rebounding from Sunday's 11-4 loss at the Philadelphia Phillies.
Fried's second start back from injury mirrored his season-worst outing May 13 at the Baltimore Orioles, a 7-0 loss, in which he allowed three runs on five hits in three innings. This time, Fried -- after returning from a two-month absence due to a left elbow bone bruise with one hit in five innings during last Wednesday's 5-3 10-inning loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates -- also allowed three runs on five hits and exited following three frames. Pulled after 39 strikes on 66 pitches while fanning four and walking two, Fried (4-3, 3.23 ERA) fell victim to a three-run first inning in which he started slow, allowing four of his five hits. Fortunately for Fried, the Yankees' bullpen and offense picked him up, but this was a step back from how he looked in his debut last week.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. was chief among New York's reinforcements, tying the game with a two-run double in the fourth inning that scored Paul Goldschmidt and Jasson Domínguez. Chisholm subsequently stole third base and scored when Spencer Jones grounded out to second with one out. When the Yankees led the White Sox (55-50) by a run in the eight inning, Chisholm's RBI single to score Domínguez padded the 6-4 lead and eventually break the game open. Chisholm's 2-for-4, two-RBI effort from the sixth spot in the order was the type of performance that New York needed to avoid a series-opening dud as he brought his slash line to .226/.299/.414 with 45 RBI and 29 steals through 99 games this season.
Between Chisholm's highlights, Ben Rice's go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning with two outs to score Amed Rosario gave the Yankees the much-needed push after the White Sox tied the game at 4-4 with one out in the fifth. Rice, whose 2-for-4 evening included a leadoff walk that sparked New York's fourth inning, need to be the guy in this lineup without Aaron Judge and met the moment as the second-batting designated hitter Monday. Through 101 games, Rice is slashing .275/.363/.585 with 73 RBI.
With Cody Bellinger out for the next month and change due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Max Schuemann's second start in left field saw him also lead off but underwhelm. Schuemann's two-game glimpse is an 0-for-7 sample size after Monday's 0-for-5 result out of the No. 1 spot in the order, which only adds to questions for Aaron Boone and the Yankees with the MLB trade deadline around the corner.

Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler entered this game with a 4.77 ERA and the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. Of course, that means the Yankees got blanked and drew just one walk in his 6.1 innings of work. Fortunately, Max Fried was even more dominant in his first start back from injury in over two months, the two starters trading zeroes long enough for the Yankees to strike against the Bucs’ bullpen. A Jasson Domínguez RBI double and Anthony Volpe RBI single in the seventh proved the decisive blows as the Yankees did just enough to win, 2-0, to split the doubleheader and win the series.
Fans of sharp defensive execution were in for a treat in the first inning. Fried looked to have given up a surefire double down the line in left to leadoff batter Nick Gonzales, but Cody Bellinger played the carom off the sidewall perfectly and fired an inch-perfect throw to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, who barely had to move his glove to apply the tag to Gonzales’ foot. The next batter Jared Triolo got down a decent bunt to the left, but the four-time Gold Glover Fried was quick off his mound to field it and fire a strike to first. Fried finished the inning with a swinging strikeout of Bryan Reynolds on an elevated 98.3 mph four-seamer, his fastest pitch of the season. That high water mark wouldn’t last long, as the next inning he punched out Marcell Ozuna looking on a 99 mph four-seamer.
Perhaps a side effect of Fried being on a pitch count of just 60 pitches — the amount planned for a second rehab start that got scrapped in lieu of him starting this game — Fried’s fastball was coming out hot the whole outing. It averaged over 96 mph this afternoon, which is almost two mph above his season average. It is particularly encouraging given that the bone bruise Fried suffered manifested itself as significantly reduced pitch velocity in the May 13th start against the Orioles that he was forced to depart after three innings. That’s a roundabout way of saying that Fried now appears fully healthy.
Fried’s day was finished after five scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts on 57 pitches, efficiently using nearly all of those 60 pitches he was allotted for this start. The four-seamer was as good as I’ve seen from him in pinstripes, and it wasn’t just the velocity. He was able to consistently paint the top ledge of the zone with the pitch, creating ample opportunity for chase and swing-and-miss against the secondaries which resulted in a 37-percent whiff rate on the day.

Max Fried made a triumphant return, pitching five scoreless and the Yankees lineup woke up late to defeat the Pirates, 2-0, in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
-Fried faced the minimum in the first thanks to Cody Bellinger gunning down Nick Gonzales trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the game. The southpaw was locked in from there, allowing just a walk across the next two innings. Fried got through five innings against a formidable Pirates lineup, allowing just one hit and one walk.
The plan was for Fried to throw 60 pitches, and he wound up tossing 57 (37 strikes) while striking out seven batters.
-Unfortunately, the Yankees lineup was anemic once again for most of the game.
Against young right-hander Bubba Chandler, the Yankees mustered just two hits and got just two base runners in scoring position through the first four innings.

PHILADELPHIA — We can summarize Tuesday night's All-Star Game in a few blunt thoughts: It was anticlimactic, dulled by super-human pitching, helpless hitters and too many made-for-TV gimmicks.
Cody Bellinger deserves credit for being named the MVP, but let's not get breathless about it. The Yankees' slugger lashed a two-run single in the first inning — and that was all the American League needed to win a 4-0 game that droned on and on and on.
What I liked more was the Philly crowd. They were as savage (and interesting) as ever, booing anyone not wearing a hometown uniform.
The Yankees, naturally, were roasted, even though Bellinger and Ben Rice, two of their representatives, are the nicest guys in pinstripes.
No matter: The mere mention of their names over the public-address system evoked a primal reaction from the stands:

The 2026 All-Star Game festivities have come and gone. The dust has settled, and for the first time since 2024, the American League came away victorious by shutting out the National League 4-0 at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.
Scoring was scarce on Tuesday, as the four runs the AL scored came in only two innings. Former Dodgers MVP Cody Bellinger had the deciding hit in his first All-Star Game since 2019, driving in two against Cristopher Sánchez. As a result of him driving in half of Tuesday's final score, Bellinger was awarded with the All-Star Game MVP honors, becoming the first Yankee to do so since his teammate Giancarlo Stanton in 2022.
From being atop the baseball summit, to the pitfalls he experienced with the Dodgers in 2021-22, to reviving his career with the same organization his father played for, Tuesday marked a full-circle moment for Bellinger, as he envisioned being in the All-Star game regularly following his first three big league seasons, writes Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
"I was like, 'Oh, I'll be here every year,'" Bellinger said. "It took a long time to get back. It's such a competitive league. It's hard to be an All-Star. Health, performance, it all has to come together."
Another former Dodger, though lacking the hardware Bellinger earned in Los Angeles, added the exclamation mark for this year's Midsummer Classic. Miguel Vargas tattooed a 433 foot home run into the second deck of the left field bleachers against Justin Wrobleski, bringing the score to its final mark. With his home run, Vargas now joins Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordoñez as the only White Sox with a home run in the All-Star Game.

PHILADELPHIA — It was an MLB All-Star Game that will be remembered for the sheer pitching dominance, the offensive ineptitude, players holding sparklers in front of the dugout, fireworks shooting up in the air, kids riding bicycles on the field, a star player who nearly broke his hand, but missing that one magical moment.
Instead, it was seemingly harmless two-run, first-inning single by a former MVP participating in his first All-Star Game in seven years whose hit proved to be worthy of the All-Star MVP award.
New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger, who stood in front of his locker before the game reminiscing when he was the National League's MVP for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the age of 24, and six hours later Tuesday night was sitting behind a podium holding the MVP award after the American League's 4-0 victory.
Bellinger is the fourth Yankee to win the All-Star MVP award, joining Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Giancarlo Stanton, and also the first in MLB history to win Rookie of the Year, LCS MVP, All-Star MVP and a World Series ******* le.
"Pretty special,'' Bellinger, 31, said. "My first few years in the big leagues, I was here two of my first three years. I was, like, 'Oh, I'll be here every year. It took a long time to get back.'

The New York Yankees were front and center during the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Despite entering the Midsummer Classic as slight road underdogs, the American League pulled off the upset with a 4-0 victory at Citizens Bank Park.
Three of those runs came in the top of the first inning off Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez. With the bases loaded and two outs, Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger ripped a two-run single up the middle, giving the AL a 2-0 lead.
Bellinger's teammate, Ben Rice, immediately followed with another single to nearly the exact same spot, driving in the AL's third run. It was the first time since 1962 that multiple Yankees players had an RBI in the All-Star Game.
That proved to be more than enough run support for the AL pitching staff, which twirled the first All-Star Game shutout since 2013. The AL tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning for good measure on Miguel Vargas' solo homer.

The All-Star Game took place on Tuesday night in Philadelphia, but it was a one-sided affair the whole way. A three-run first inning by the AL gave them a lead that they would hold throughout the game, finishing with a 4-0 victory over the NL.
Even though the hometown ace, Cristopher Sánchez, got the start in this one, pitching at home didn’t help him at all. The AL sent eight men to the plate in the first. The big two hits were an RBI single by Cody Bellinger that scored two, and another RBI single from Ben Rice that scored the third run. Before the NL could even bat, they were down 3-0.
Once they were up to bat, the AL pitching staff nearly held them in check completely. The NL had just two baserunners — a hit and a walk — through the first six innings. They didn’t record their second hit until the eighth inning. As a whole, they struck out 15 batters while allowing just three hits and two walks.
The fourth run for the AL came in the eighth inning, when Miguel Vargas hit a solo home run off Justin Wrobleski. That accounted for the final score of the game.

Starter Dylan Cease struck out three batters in the first inning to ignite a dominant American League pitching performance in a 4-0 victory over the National League in Tuesday's 96th Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Cuban 38-year-old left-hander Aroldis Chapman and 31-year-old American right-hander Bryan Baker forced the final outs in the ninth inning to complete an overpowering pitching effort at Philadelphia.
"As the game went on, the pitching was just absolutely dominant," said AL outfielder Cody Bellinger, the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.
In the first All-Star Game shutout since 2013, 11 AL pitchers allowed NL batters three hits with two walks and struck out 15.
The AL won for the 11th time in the past 13 editions to seize a 49-45 with two drawn edge in the all-time rivalry.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dylan Cease struck out the side in the first inning, combining with 10 relievers on a three-hitter in a show of pitching dominance that led the American League to a 4-0 win over the National League in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
All-Star MVP Cody Bellinger hit a two-run single and Ben Rice followed with an RBI single in the first against Cristopher Sánchez of the host Philadelphia Phillies.
Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox added an eighth-inning home run off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Justin Wrobleski, who was pitching on his 26th birthday, for the game’s only extra-base hit. The AL won for the 18th time in 23 games and holds a 49-45-2 advantage overall.
Singles by Juan Soto in the fourth, Pete Crow-Armstrong in the eighth and Otto Lopez in the ninth were the only hits by the NL, which failed to advance a runner past first.
Pitchers combined for 27 strikeouts, 15 by AL hurlers.

gainst the backdrop of America’s 250th anniversary, the 96th Midsummer Classic at Citizens Bank Park became a definitive showcase of American League pitching depth. Behind a quick start and a dominant staff performance that limited the National League to just 3 hits, the AL secured a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.
The AL bats wasted no time, striking for 3 runs in the top of the first. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger ripped a 2-run single to center field, then his teammate Ben Rice followed with an RBI knock, burying the NL in an early 3-0 hole.
From there, the contest settled into a pitching duel, with both sides unable to produce anything on offense. While celebratory fireworks lit up the Philadelphia skyline throughout the night — including a tribute to “The Sandlot” and a “God Bless America” performance — there were none to be found on the diamond, with the teams putting together 13 scoreless frames.
In the top of the 8th, the AL added insurance in the later frames courtesy of Miguel Vargas. Entering as a pinch-runner after Junior Caminero left following a hit-by-pitch, the White Sox infielder launched a 433-foot solo home run to add insurance.
