The close of the free-agent market caused a real media stir in the Liga BetPlay. The boards of the country's top clubs are rushing key negotiations ahead of the registration deadline set for September 11.
James Rodríguez is reportedly finalizing details in Medellín to undergo medical tests and sign with Atlético Nacional. Meanwhile, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado has reached a verbal agreement with Millonarios FC to take medicals in Bogotá and complete his return to the local league at age 38.
The day took an unexpected turn with the possible return of Jackson Martínez. At 39, and after retiring in 2020, the striker is considering a formal offer from Independiente Medellín with the approval of coach Amaranto Perea.

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has had successful surgery on a minor heart issue and will return to training in two weeks' time, his club Napoli said on Tuesday.
The former Manchester United player recently experienced a heart rhythm disorder, something which is not considered serious but did require surgery.
"On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success," the Serie A club said in a statement.
"McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."
McTominay, 29, has been a key player for Napoli since joining from Manchester United in 2024, scoring 27 goals in 82 matches.

It's unlikely that talk of Saturday night's explosively controversial final moments during Michigan versus Western Michigan will die down anytime soon. Nearly 24 hours later, however, NBC has finally offered an official statement on the controversial moment.
In the final seconds of Saturday night's tilt between Michigan and Western Michigan, quarterback Bryce Underwood's Hail Mary heave fell incomplete as the Wolverines looked to avoid a devastating upset in their first game of the season. While it looked as if Western Michigan was set to complete the upset, as the clock hit zero before the ball hit a player on the failed try, the referees ended up adding a second to the clock to allow Michigan one last attempt. Underwood ended up connecting with JJ Buchanan on the final Hail Mary try as Michigan walked off their opponents 13-12.
According to a statement and footage from the Big Ten released on Sunday, "Western Michigan's #18 started his jump from an established out-of-bounds position (left foot) and made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock". That footage contradicts what the stadium's clock and NBC's broadcast clock stated as the play ended, causing immense confusion amongst college football fans as the dust continues to settle on this controversial moment.
MORE: What did WMU coach Lance Taylor say about clock controversy in Hail Mary loss to Michigan?
Then later on Sunday, NBC released its own statement via broadcaster John Fanta during halftime of Washington vs. Washington State.

Atalanta coach Maurizio Sarri has warned Roma that Donyell Malen is in "a state of grace" ahead of Saturday evening's meeting at the Stadio Olimpico, while admitting he is delighted that the summer transfer window has finally closed.
Malen has made an immediate impression since joining Roma and will be one of the main attacking threats Sarri's side must contain. The Atalanta coach singled out the Dutchman when discussing how his team have prepared for the difficult away fixture.
"Malen is in a state of grace, so it will be important to stop him," with quotes via TuttoSport.
Sarri is also aware that his team face a significant physical challenge. Atalanta are the only Serie A side to have already played four matches in 11 days, leaving limited opportunities to train and prepare specifically for their opponents.
"It is a match between a team that already has 13 or 14 months of work behind it and one like ours that has had 45 days."

The punishment the NBA handed down to the Los Angeles Clippers for circumventing the league salary cap through no-show sponsorship deals signed by Kawhi Leonard is unprecedented in American professional sports.
The Clippers were stripped of five future first-round NBA Draft picks, received one-year suspensions for owner Steve Ballmer and president of business operations Gillian Zucker, and a six-month suspension for president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank. In addition, the Clippers and Ballmer were fined $30 million.
While the draft-pick penalty mirrors the initial penalty for the Minnesota Timberwolves when they developed a scheme to sign Joe Smith in 2000, two of those picks were eventually restored. And the $3.5 million fine is no comparison, even with inflation, to the monetary penalty for the Clippers.
But for David Samson, it still wasn't enough.
Appearing on The Dan Le Batard Show, the former Miami Marlins executive said the severity of the salary cap circumvention called for even harsher punishment, perhaps up to and including firing the executives in question and forcing Ballmer to sell the team.

The Dallas Cowboys made one of the more surprising decisions during the NFL's final round of roster cuts, moving on from running backs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. The two young players entered the offseason competing for a larger role, but neither survived the battle for a place behind the team's top option.
Blue and Mafah were part of a three-way competition with Malik Davis for the No. 2 running back job. Dallas ultimately chose Davis, leaving the two younger ball carriers without roster spots and creating a notable shakeup in a position group that appeared unsettled throughout the offseason.
Aug 22, 2025; Arlington, Texas, USA; Teammates celebrate with Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue (34) after he scores a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons during the first quarter at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Andrew Dieb-Imagn Images
Blue's release was particularly surprising because the Cowboys selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 draft. The former Texas standout spent only one season with the organization, and his departure ended a short tenure that began with expectations he could eventually develop into a meaningful contributor.
Mafah also entered the league with draft pedigree, though Dallas invested less in him as a seventh-round selection. His rookie season included limited opportunities, producing 18 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries while adding two receptions for 11 yards, but those flashes were not enough to secure his return.

Fulham have added another defensive option with David Affengruber arriving from Elche CF on a four-year contract.
The 25-year-old Austrian centre-back has signed a deal running until 2030, with Fulham holding an option to extend it for another year. The transfer is reportedly worth close to €10 million.
Affengruber leaves Elche after two seasons with the Spanish club, having joined from Sturm Graz as a free agent in 2024. He quickly established himself as a key figure and played an important role in their rise to La Liga.
His performances also earned international recognition, with the defender making his Austria debut and being included in their squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa had been keen to strengthen his defence and sees Affengruber's pace and reliability as valuable additions to the backline.

We're not in August anymore, but we're still in the midwest in early September for Notre Dame's season opener against the Wisconsin Badgers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. So… there could be a variety of different weather forecasts for Sunday's game, but thankfully for everyone going to the game — it should be a fairly good day and night for college football.
There are going to be some major storms rolling through Green Bay this week, which is going to leave the area VERY muggy with predictions of very high humidity. Fans looking to have fun during the day won't have to worry about the rain, but it still mught feel wet as you gulp down one or two or three brats and chug some of the finest beer in the land, PBR.
As we get closer to game time, the temperature will begin to drop significantly, but the humidity will still be very high. With the humidity and this being the first game of the year, players on the field and fans in the stands should be careful of cramps throughout the contest.

In their final preseason game, the Buccaneers were blanked by the Jacksonville Jaguars 0-19, capping off what was otherwise a solid preseason for Tampa Bay. The Bucs were disappointing, especially on offense, which couldn't get anything going regardless of who was under center, and on special teams, which reverted to old bad habits. The defense largely held up its end thanks to another great night of pass rush and secondary play. A solid defensive effort went for naught thanks to the offensive implosion, which likely saw the end of Jalon Daniels' hopes to be Baker Mayfield's primary backup.
Here are the studs and duds from the Bucs' preseason finale loss to the Jaguars:
By all appearances, Jalon Daniels was auditioning for the rare third quarterback spot on the Bucs' 53-man roster. Unfortunately for him, it went almost as badly as it could have against the Jaguars. Daniels was sharp early, but his receivers were anything but. Then came the fumbled snap in the second quarter, a problem that carried over from last week's matchup against the Chiefs.
Daniels then took three sacks, three more than in any previous preseason game. He finished with just eight completions on 15 attempts and just 57 pass yards. While Daniels remains the Bucs' most dynamic quarterback from the preseason, it is unlikely he did enough to prove himself reliable enough to overtake Jake Browning as QB2.
One of Tampa Bay's few highlights was the play of its outside linebackers, who frustrated the Jaguars' offense all night. David Walker was unstoppable once again, winning a third of his pass rushes per PFF. Anthony Nelson continued his productive preseason, recording a sack and a quarterback hit. Jack Pyburn played like someone who did not plan on playing for LSU this year, leading the team with two sacks, three tackles for a loss and two quarterback hits. Tampa Bay's edge rush looks much improved from last year heading into this season.

With Manuel Neuer going back into retirement after the FIFA World Cup, the door has opened for a new talent to take over the throne as Germany's #1 goalkeeper. Marc-Andre ter Stegen's career seems to be fizzling out in the Netherlands, and Oliver Baumann is no spring chicken. All these signs point to Jürgen Klopp electing a younger option as his goalkeeper moving forward.
Jonas Urbig will be the first name for Bayern Munich fans to mention, and for good reason. However, there is another elite German goalkeeper, with much more experience thus far. This of course is SC Freiburg's Noah Atubolu. Reports from Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg claim that Atubolu has now transferred to fellow Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
While the reports indicate that Freiburg have loaned their star goalkeeper to Frankfurt, there is a mandatory buy clause included. While Freiburg actually finished higher than Frankfurt last season, this is generally seen as an upgrade for the German goalkeeper.
While Atubolu has been called up to the national team under Julian Nagelsmann, he has yet to appear in a match for Die Mannschaft. Klopp might have other ideas though with his reports of big change coming. With Neuer keeping Urbig in a secondary role for the moment, does it make sense for Atubolu to lead the team moving forward? We've officially reached the business portion of Cincinnati Bengals training camp, and that's because the reality of the business of the NFL is going to become very apparent in the coming days.
Even though Bengals head coach Zac Taylor indicated position battles can continue past the Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. deadline to shave the roster down to 53 players, the final three practices of the training-camp portion of the season are over. The last ended midday Aug. 26, and now Bengals players on the roster bubble have only the Aug. 28 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field (8 p.m. Eastern) to make a final impression before cuts are made.
"I don't feel like anybody should feel comfortable going in this last week that they've made the team," Taylor said Aug. 24. "That's a big part of it, is we want guys that we can depend on. So (they've got) to continue to be consistent and accountable over this last week through the Philly game. And we'll make our decisions this weekend."
Taylor confirmed on Aug. 26 his starters wouldn't see the field in Philly, so that means all the focus is going to be on evaluating the remaining roster decisions still to be made.
As we enter the final preseason game of 2026, here's where we think the Bengals project to land with their 53-man roster picks (and we have some movement since the Aug. 22 preseason game against the Chicago Bears):

This weekend, Moses Itauma will fight Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight ****** le, with a piece of history on the line.
If Itauma wins, the Briton will become the youngest world heavyweight champion since Mike Tyson, who broke the record 40 years ago.
And Itauma, 21, will enter Saturday's main event full of confidence, with a 14-0 (12 KOs) record to his name, having stopped Dillian Whyte and Jermaine Franklin in his last two bouts.

Hrgovic is a seasoned heavyweight, however, an Olympic medalist who has lost just once as a pro. The Croatian, 34, was bloodied by Daniel Dubois to the point of a stoppage in 2024, but he has since beaten three Britons in a row.

So how did he fare on an eventful first weekend of the 2026-27 campaign?
Ipswich have backed McKenna's successor with big money in the transfer market, £150m on a dozen signings, and O'Neil was rewarded with a vital victory against Sunderland.

I recently reconnected with an administrator I met while I was in college. And what transpired was a conversation with a man who is living a wonderful philanthropic life.
Herb Yamanaka was an events manager at the University of Oregon back in the mid-1970s. He used to call me "Pineapple," an inside joke between two people from Hawaii. We'd ******* p into each other at the UO athletic department while I was a student volunteer and gofer and he was on the athletic staff.
It's not often one can chat with someone who was born before World War II, had relatives in internment camps, experienced racism for the first time in college, and was in college before Hawaii became a state.
Guess what, that man is still at UO — all 92 years young on Aug. 13 — as an ******* ociate athletic director focusing on major donor giving.
Yamanaka is gregarious, humble, benevolent and generous. The Army vet once rejected Nike founder Phil Knight's open checkbook offer for a memento and was the wingman for legendary former Oregon football coach and athletic director Len Casanova. He enjoys deep-sea fishing, going three times a year. In early August, he landed a bluefin tuna while angling in San Diego.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has turned heads across the Spanish football landscape this weekend. This comes owing to a round of comments on the situation of Blaugrana star Alejandro Balde.
Defender Balde has of course seen his name emerge as a prominent one in the media chatter surrounding Barcelona over recent days. After the Camp Nou brass finally pushed a permanent deal for João Cancelo over the line, Balde was swiftly tipped to move on.
The left-back is for his part fresh off a challenging campaign last time out, which saw him lose starting status owing to a combination of fitness woes and a simple lack of form.
Premier League heavyweights Manchester United, in turn, are recently understood to have made contact over a potential deal for Balde ahead of the transfer deadline.
Speaking during his first pre-match press conference of the new campaign on Saturday, the aforementioned Hansi Flick was therefore drawn on the situation of his defensive star.

Much is being made about the Tennessee ***** ans' supposed ongoing struggles in the secondary. It was undeniably disappointing to watch San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Kurtis Rourke complete 12-of-14 passes against the ***** ans' starting secondary in the first preseason game. Starting quarterback Cam Ward has also routinely carved up the starters for most of training camp.
Head coach Robert Saleh isn't panicking, but recently admitted there should be a sense of urgency. Understandably so. The ***** ans committed more than $100 million in free agency to new starting cornerbacks Cor'Dale Flott and Alontae Taylor, and they've been at the forefront of the struggles.
With the ***** ans doing some soul searching, you wonder if cornerback Joshua Williams could contribute something positive at cornerback. He was the third cornerback the ***** ans signed in free agency earlier this offseason. His shared history with Mike Borgonzi and the Kansas City Chiefs made him a target.
Williams has been wearing a yellow non-contact jersey at training camp due to a pectoral muscle injury. Coach Saleh recently claimed he's close to shedding that jersey and being a full participant at practice. Saleh also praised his length and work ethic, and Jim Wyatt noted he had a pass breakup during individual drills earlier this week.
Williams is long and competitive. He possesses the physical profile Coach Saleh prefers in his cornerbacks. If Taylor and Flott struggle into the regular season, perhaps Williams will start getting worked into the rotation. For now, he's simply focused on being healthy enough to contribute once his number is called.

According to reports, the NCAA has ruled a Texas A&M guard ineligible to play for the 2026 season, pending an appeal.
Bryson Warren's eligibility waiver request was denied, but he could still fight to regain an extra year with the Aggies through a lawsuit if he chooses. The 6-foot-3, 191-pounder has averaged 14.3 points and 4.1 ***** ists in 27.6 minutes per game in the last three seasons in the NBA's G League. He committed to Texas A&M in the spring, but it was going to be an uphill battle against the NCAA to see the floor at Reed Arena in 2026.
He skipped the collegiate level and went straight to the G League after graduating from Link Academy in 2024. The undrafted guard has yet to sign a two-way contract or play in an NBA game.
This isn't the first instance of a G League player attempting to rejoin the college ranks, however. Santa Clara's Thierry Darlan, Louisville's London Johnson, and even former Texas A&M guard Rubén Dominguez, who took the international pipeline before landing in College Station under Bucky McMillan during the 2025-26 season.
For Warren to regain eligibility and potentially compete for the Aggies in 2026, he must seek a temporary restraining order, much like Texas transfer Jordan Pope, who was just granted an extra year on Tuesday. Rashaun Agee also needed a court injunction to gain an additional season, which he spent with Texas A&M last season.

Saturday night left very little room for criticism as the Baltimore Ravens sent the hometown fans home happy. They opened the preseason with a 24-7 one-sided victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
In true midseason form, Jesse Minter wasn't interested in celebrating the result for long. By Monday, the Ravens' first-year head coach had already shifted his attention toward the lessons learned from the performance and how to help his team improve.
That's the reality of August football. The result matters far less than the lessons a team can carry into September, and Minter's attention was already fixed on those details.
The Ravens have another busy week. Monday morning's practice was followed by Jesse Minter's chat with the media. Tuesday brings a walkthrough before the Ravens fly to Minnesota for joint practices against the Vikings.
When asked what stood out after reviewing the film, Minter pointed to several encouraging developments. Interestingly, his first answer had little to do with touchdowns, highlight plays, or individual statistics.

Pep Guardiola clashed with his captain and almost broke down in tears as he railed at players during his worst run as Manchester City manager.
The Spaniard stood down at the end of last season after winning 20 trophies in a glorious 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.
One of the lowest point of his glittering reign came during a testing run in the autumn of 2024, when City lost nine times and won just once in the ******* e of 13 games.
Guardiola outwardly showed signs of strain, notably when he scratched his face after City surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord in the Champions League.

A "Monday Night Football" mainstay is going to have to change up his routine this season. Former Dallas Cowboys great Troy Aikman will be subject to the "Tom Brady rules" this season, per Front Office Sports.
The Brady rules were put into place following Brady's rise as a broadcaster with Fox. After it was noted that Brady was also a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, a possible conflict of interest, the NFL put restrictions on Brady's access to other teams.
In addition to serving as a broadcaster on "Monday Night Football," Aikman also consults for the Miami Dolphins. He reportedly played a role in the team hiring general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley this offseason.
As part of the Brady rules, Brady — and now Aikman — will not have "access to practice facilities or practices," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told Front Office Sports.
"Both may attend production meetings virtually but will have no access to practice facilities or practices. They may conduct interviews outside team facilities with football personnel and players. They could conduct the interview at the team hotel in an area separate from other football personnel. They could broadcast games involving their own club."

Jack Whaley became only the second Englishman to win the US Amateur Championship since 1911 as he beat American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 at Merion.
Victory will give the 22-year-old a place in the field for the Masters, US Open and The Open at St Andrews in 2027.
Whaley, who attends Florida State University, came into the contest as a major underdog against Leng Jr, who is 23rd in the world amateur golf rankings, some 67 places higher than the 22-year-old from Doncaster.
The on-course form looked to be following the rankings as Whaley slipped two down after the opening 18 holes in Sunday's 36-hole encounter.
However, Whaley fought back superbly, making back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes of his second round on his way to winning four holes consecutively.

The Dallas Cowboys hoped for many things in their opening preseason contest in Seattle. First and foremost, they wanted to escape the Pacific Northwest without any major injuries. While some of their other goals have been accomplished, they did not escape unscathed.
One of the team's only question marks on offense is who is going to be the primary backup to running back Javonte Williams. Two second-year backs are leading the charge, but Dallas is going to have to hold their breath after one of them came up injured. 2025 seventh-round pick Phil Mafah left the game in the second half and has been ruled out from returning with a chest injury.
The Clemson alum presents a much different style of ball than his counterpart Jaydon Blue. While Blue has the inside track to be the change of pace back with his raw speed and acceleration, Mafah is a powerful back who also flashes some speed. He may be more in line to be a backup in case of injury, but now he's injured himself.
Dallas also has Malik Davis and Israel Abinakanda in the rotation if Mafah is going to miss any significant amount of time.
Mafah spent most of his 2025 season on the injured list, only getting snaps at the end of the regular season after the Cowboys had been eliminated from the playoff hunt.
