Sep. 10— The Pacelli boys put up another solid performance as they took second place at the 10-team Hayfield cross country invite Thursday.
Zemecha McManus took first for Pacelli, while Isaac Johnson was fourth and Kedi Oman took fifth. Pacelli was just one point behind first place Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Hayfield freshman Hadley Doman won the girls race with a time of 19:23.7 and Blooming Prairie senior Gloria Hernandez took second with a time of 20:09.7.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders first place push is much in thanks to the MiLB International League Player of the Week Anthony Volpe leading off its lineup. Volpe won the weekly award after a stellar series against the Worcester Red Sox.
Volpe finished the week 11 of 21 from the plate, hitting .524 against Worcester. The RailRiders infielder hit three doubles, and three home runs in six games. Volpe drove in six runs and scored eight times of his own. He stole five bags over the six-game set, on top of three base on ******* .
Since his returned to the RailRiders lineup Volpe has blasted 10 home runs in a month's time back in Triple-A. His return has aided Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's chase for the second half playoff push. SWB is currently a game out of first place behind Rochester.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yohandy Morales homered in his first major league game and Jared Simpson earned the win in relief in his own debut, helping the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5 on Tuesday night.
The Nationals called up Morales and Simpson before the game, with major league rosters expanding from 26 to 28. After striking out his first time up, Morales hit a solo shot in the third inning. Simpson (1-0) entered in the fifth with Washington up 5-2 and induced a double play and a flyout after inheriting a first-and-second, ****** ody-out situation.
Then he worked two more perfect innings.

Greg Dortch's NFL career has new life.
And it's where his life began.
The Buffalo Bills are signing the veteran wide receiver and return specialist to their practice squad, according to multiple reports.
Dortch was born in Rochester in 1998 before his family moved to Virginia when he was young.
He's returning to western New York with a chance to help solve one of the Bills' biggest special teams problems: returning punts. Buffalo didn't have an experienced punt returner on its initial 53-man roster.

The Washington Nationals are calling up infield prospect Yohandy Morales as part of the September roster expansion, according to reports. MLB insider Yordano Carmona was the first to break the news. Morales will be activated for tomorrow's game against the Atlanta Braves, which would be his MLB debut if he plays. He joins the list of National League prospects looking to make an impact down the stretch.

The 24-year-old Morales was a second-round draft pick by the Nationals in 2023 out of the University of Miami (FL). He has made his way up through the system since, and last season he was promoted from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester, where he has remained through this season. In 2026, Morales' power has gone up precipitously. In 104 games this year, he has a slash line of .286/.363/.519 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI, 19 doubles, and 82 runs scored. Despite these strong numbers, Morales remains outside the Nationals' top 30 prospects on MLB Pipeline's rankings.
Defensively, Morales has seen time at first base and third base, but has primarily played first this season. If he gets extended reps with the Nats in September, odds are it will be at first base. The Nats have used a platoon there since trading Luis García Jr. to the New York Yankees. Former top prospect Brady House has third base covered in Washington for the time being.
Barring some kind of miracle in September, the Nationals will not be making the postseason. They now sit eight games out of the last NL Wild Card spot. While that's not an impossible deficit, the team will likely be more focused on giving their prospects some reps and seeing what they might have on hand next season. The future appears bright in DC, as the Nats have built up a strong farm system during their rebuild since winning the 2019 World Series. Many of those prospects have already become major leaguers, and while the youth movement hasn't gotten them to October yet, it shouldn't be too far off.

The Rochester Red Wings continued their postseason push Friday night, rallying from an early two-run deficit to beat the Buffalo Bisons 5-3 at ESL Ballpark and move into a tie for first place in the International League's second-half standings.
Rochester improved to 79-49 and pulled even with Indianapolis atop the International League's second-half race thanks to a four-run fourth inning fueled by doubles from Cayden Wallace and Liover Peguero. Chandler Champlain earned the win with 4.1 innings of relief before Yovanny Cruz recorded his fifth save.
The Bisons broke through in the top of the fourth inning after Yohendrick Piñango singled and scored on Jay Harry's RBI double. Harry later came home on Lenyn Sosa's RBI single, giving Buffalo a 2-0 lead.
Starter Isaac Lyon was charged with both runs, with Champlain entering in relief to record the final out of the inning.

Aug. 28—WILLMAR — The Community Christian School volleyball team has been on quite the run the last two seasons.
Last year, the Eagles finished second in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Conference Tier I tournament, falling to host First Baptist School of Rosemount after earning victories over Rochester Home Schools in the first round and St. Cloud Christian School in the second.
In 2024, CCS went 21-0, winning the MCAC's end-of-the-season tournament.
And, the Eagles already have begun the 2026 season with a victory, beating the Fourth Baptist Warriors of Plymouth 3-0.
The team will have a different look in 2026.

The Phoenix native never suited up for the Pacers, dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers soon after the draft was over. On Sunday, the 10th Annual Kirk Gibson Foundation Golf Classic took place in Rochester Hills, with the foundation aiming to fund programs to benefit those living with Parkinson's Disease and their families. Tom Izzo made an appearance, along with a ton of other local celebrities to support Gibson.
While at the event, Izzo talked with Brad Galli of WXYZ to discuss several different things. First, breaking down what it means for Izzo to be a supporter of the event, and being there to help fight alongside Gibson. After that, he dove into his team for this year, stating how much he loves the group he has.
"That's the beauty of Kirk, he's such a competitor. But it's not on the field — it's attacking Parkinson's," Izzo said. "It's not a chore to be here, it's an honor to be here."

People living in a block of flats say they were unable to open their windows during recent heatwaves because of the stench coming from uncollected bins.
The rubbish was left in the storerooms in Weavers Court in Rochester for 12 weeks, causing an awful smell and attracting rats and foxes, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.
After the LDRS got in touch with Orbit, the housing group which manages the site, the bins were finally emptied on Monday.
However, problems with irregular collections have plagued the block since 2022, and the hot weather made the problem worse than ever, according to residents.
Zanna Negorodova has lived in a flat directly above the bin storage area for 16 years and said it had had an impact on her health.

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) - Horseheads football is back and looking to get back on top of the Section IV mountain again this season.
The Blue Raiders kicked off with their first practice of the season Monday afternoon for the 2026 season. Two years ago, Horseheads captured their first Section IV Class A crown since 1998. But, last year, Horseheads fell in an overtime thriller to Union-Endicott in the ******* le game coming up just short 21-20.
Horseheads finished (7-4) last season and will have to replace all-everything running back Pat Laney who was the 2025 Ernie Davis Award winner. Returning is senior running back Bryce Thomas who is looking to have a strong year and junior quarterback Lyncoln Bennett will be under center for Horseheads.

NEW YORK — Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón is scheduled to make his second minor league rehabilitation start for Double-A Somerset.
Rodón has been on the 15-day injured list since July 3 because of left elbow inflammation. He received multiple shots, including platelet-rich plasma injections, and threw 29 of 48 pitches for strikes in his first rehab outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The left-hander allowed three runs and three hits over 2 2/3 innings against Rochester, with four strikeouts and two walks.
New York manager Aaron Boone has said Rodón could return to the team in a piggyback situation with another starter at first, similar to Max Fried's return from a bruised left elbow on July 22.
When he gets back, Rodón will rejoin a strong Yankees rotation that also includes Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.

After a streak of three consecutive quality starts by Jonathan Cannon (only three runs on nine hits in 18 innings), the right-handed pitcher returned to earth against Rochester. This time, Cannon allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits in five frames. Despite that, the Knights only trailed by three when Cannon's outing was over. Charlotte scored its three early runs on a single by Michael Turner in the first, a single by Ryan Galanie in the second, and a productive ground out by Turner in the fifth. In the sixth, the Knights trimmed the deficit on a single by Andy Weber to drive in Joey Wiemer, who singled and stole second to open the inning.
The game's biggest hit took place in the seventh. Turner led off the seventh with a single, and Junior Pérez walked to put two on with no outs. Bills co-owner Kim Pegula played an important role in the development of the team's new stadium. Among other things, she was instrumental in pushing for a switch from artificial turf to grass.
When the new stadium unofficially opened on Saturday night, Kim Pegula was present.
It was a rare public appearance for Kim Pegula following a 2022 cardiac arrest and ensuing brain injury due to lack of oxygen. Via Ryan Miller of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, she had not been seen at any team events in more than two years.
Kim Pegula had attended a training-camp practice in 2023 and another one in 2024.
At the recent ribbon cutting for the stadium, co-owner Terry Pegula said this about his wife: "Kim, I wish you could have finished this project with the same passion and hard work that you started with."

Playing some catch-up on roster moves in a busy week, we had resolution for three players were designated for ****** ignment by the Dodgers in the last week.
Wyatt Mills was designated for ****** ignment on Monday when the Dodgers needed to clear 40-man roster ****** e after a flurry of trade deadline deals. On Thursday the right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals, who simultaneously optioned Mills to Triple-A Rochester.
The 31-year-old Mills pitched in six games for the Dodgers this season, his first time in the majors since 2022, after Tommy John surgery wiped out 2023 and 2024.
"A long road, it's never a guarantee that you get fully healthy after that," Mills told me after his call-up in May. "So it was more like a deep breath, kind of peaceful. I felt calm. I put in a lot of work, and my confidence came from that."
Mills struggled in his stints with the Dodgers, with nine walks and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, with five runs allowed, four of them earned. He had a 2.41 ERA and six saves in 33 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City with 52 strikeouts and 18 walks in 37 1/3 innings.

Those numbers were a big drop-off from Wiemer's hot start in the majors. He began the season by reaching base in each of his first 10 plate appearances, tying the major league record, and homering in each of his first two games. He went 10-for-17 with two home runs across his first five games before his production dipped over his next 61 plate appearances, when he hit .189/.295/.340 and struck out 41% of the time.

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Joey Wiemer, according to Chicago Sports Network and MLB.com's Scott Merkin. The 27-year-old will report to Triple-A Charlotte and add right-handed outfield depth to the organization.
