From the moment the 2025 season ended, UTSA set out to find answers for the team's biggest shortcomings. At the top of the list? Winning on the road, and avoiding slow starts.
The Roadrunners are 3-10 away from the Alamodome the past two years, opening the 2024 season 2-4 and starting 3-4 in 2025.
Now, after months of preparing and retooling, UTSA will finally find out if the problems have been solved, visiting Texas State for an I-35 rivalry showdown at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.
"We've been talking about it for a long time," Roadrunners defensive lineman Tai Leonard said. "We've been doing all the work that's required. So, I mean, God willing, we can go out there and showcase."
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor knows the results his offseason of changes to staff, roster construction and even day-to-day practice schedules will take more than one day to bear out.

As continuous inflation squeezes household budgets, the discount retail sector should potentially benefit across the board, with middle- and lower-income consumers looking for value driving foot traffic into value chains. That's roughly what happened in the second-quarter reports from Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) and Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR), both of which were released in late August. Both retailers outperformed expectations, though only one company's stock was rewarded for this.
Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) reported second-quarter results on August 27 that exceeded expectations, and shares rose more than 6.5% in premarket trading. Net sales increased 5.2% to $11.29 billion, surpassing the $11.2 billion market forecast, while diluted EPS came in at $2.48, up 33.3% year-over-year and well above the $2.01 ******* ysts projected. Same-store sales increased 3.5%, driven by a 2.0% increase in customer traffic and a 1.5% increase in average transaction amount, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of traffic growth and the sixth consecutive quarter of positive comps across all four merchandise categories.
Management improved their full-year estimate across the board: same-store sales growth is now expected to be 2.5% to 2.9%, up from 2.2% to 2.7% before, while full-year EPS guidance increased to $7.80-$8.00 from $7.20-$7.45. Tariff refunds, a lower LIFO provision, and improved shrink and damages helped increase the gross margin by 127 basis points to 32.6%. CEO Todd Vasos also pointed to continued market share gains from higher-income households switching away from traditional grocers, a trend the company has cited for several quarters, with management announcing plans to resume up to $700 million in share buybacks in the latter half of the year, backed by remodels under its Project Renovate and Project Elevate initiatives.
Dollar Tree's results, released on August 27, indicate a more complicated situation. Diluted EPS came in at $2.70, including a $1.31-per-share net benefit related to tariff refunds, while revenue increased 7% year-over-year to $4.89 billion. Comparable store sales up 3.7%, driven by a 3.3% gain in average ticket and a 0.4% increase in traffic, a return to positive traffic that occurred a full quarter ahead of management's internal plan.
However, the headline figure includes an important caveat: $1.31 of the $2.70 in EPS came from the net impact of $383 million in IEEPA tariff refunds after related reinvestment spending, duties, and taxes. Strip that out, and underlying EPS was $1.39, above the $1.00-$1.15 range management had guided to in May and about 23% above the $1.13 consensus estimate.

The results are in for the first SB Nation Reacts polls of the regular season for our Minnesota Vikings, so let's take a look at how everyone is feeling on the eve of the new campaign.
We had two questions for you this week, with the first one being the question that we'll be asking every week this season going forward: How confident are you that the Vikings are moving in the right direction? While the number is above the 50% mark, it isn't quite as high as we've seen it at the start of seasons in the recent past.
Of those who responded to our poll, 60% feel that the team is, in fact, moving in the right direction. As we've generally stated, this can mean different things to different people, but there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered about our favorite squad as we head into the season opener. Hopefully we'll get some positive answers to those questions on Sunday afternoon against the hated Green Bay Packers.
Speaking of that matchup, our other question for this week was how you think the purple will fare in their first game of the season. Our readers feel, overwhelmingly, that our team will come out with a victory, though the margin seems to be up for some debate.
Of those who responded to our poll for this week, 48% believe that the Vikings will emerge victorious by a touchdown or less, while another 34% believe that they'll win by an even greater margin. So, 82% of those who responded to our question for this week believe that our favorite team will be getting off to a 1-0 start to the 2026 season, which is nice. Of those who believe that the Vikings will be starting 0-1, the numbers. . .which somehow add up to 101% rather than 100% because of rounding errors (I ****** ume) that I haven't seen. . .have a slight lean towards the Vikings losing by more than a touchdown than they do toward them losing by less than that.

Joseph Morales and Brandon Moreno meet in the Noche UFC co-feature Saturday at Diamond Desert Arena in Glendale, Ariz. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie ****** yst Dan Tom.
Last event's results: 4-2
UFC main cards, 2026: 100-55-1
Joseph Morales (14-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is in his second stint in the UFC. After an 0-2 run his first time around, he returned and won "The Ultimate Fighter" last year, then submitted Matt Schnell in November. He's been sidelined for 10 months, but now has his biggest opportunity yet.
Two-time flyweight champ Brandon Moreno (23-10-2 MMA, 11-7-2 UFC) has seen a mixed bag of results since he lost the belt to Alexandre Pantoja in 2023. He dropped a split call to Brandon Royval after that, but then had back-to-back decision wins. Those are in the rearview mirror, though. Consecutive losses to Tatsuro Taira and Lone'er Kavanagh have him in desperate need of a win.

Pakistan great Wasim Akram has expressed frustration over the country's continued struggles in Test cricket, arguing that the lack of quality batting talent emerging through the system has become a major concern.

Speaking to the media in Lahore on Friday, the former fast bowler said Pakistan's home-and-away Test series defeat to Bangladesh should have prompted the authorities to take immediate corrective measures. Instead, he felt little changed after what should have been a warning sign.

Akram pointed towards the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which has been running for a decade, and questioned whether the tournament had produced any significant batting talent for the national team.

"It has been 10 years since the PSL started, but has a single batter been produced by the PSL? Yes we have produced a few bowlers but tell me have we produced any noteworthy batting talent," he questioned.
Akram also highlighted the emergence of a 15-year-old batting talent in neighbouring India, an apparent reference to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as an example of the kind of player Pakistan needs to produce.

"I think when we produce a batting talent like the 14-year old then we will see improvement coming through," Akram said.

While he felt Pakistan remained competitive in white-ball cricket, the former pacer was far less optimistic about the team's position in the longer format, describing the state of Test cricket as "bad".

Akram also played down the importance of who takes charge as Pakistan's coach, saying that whether the PCB appoints him or Gary Kirsten, the fundamental challenge would remain because the coach would still be working with the same pool of players.

Rather than repeatedly changing personnel, Akram called for the PCB's domestic structure to be given time to produce results. He believes the system should be allowed to operate for three to four years, with patience and long-term planning essential to any improvement.

Akram admitted that he was just as disappointed as any other Pakistani by the team's recent performances.

"Club cricket needs to be revived if we want improvement in red ball cricket. The PCB should spend 100 million rupees each in Karachi and Lahore, as talent comes from club cricket."

He also called for greater consistency in the national side, pointing out that Pakistan have continued to rotate players without addressing the underlying problems.

He said there should be consistency in the team, but the players remain the same -- they just keep coming and going.
Pakistan's ongoing Test series in England also came under scrutiny, with Akram criticising the team's approach against the home bowlers.

"In England in the ongoing series they didn't move their front foot forward, playing bowlers like Ollie Robinson while standing rooted in the crease. You need to play with courage, but for that, talent is essential."

Akram also offered his ******* sment of Pakistan's fast-bowling resources, arguing that raw pa

Liverpool head into another Premier League test with momentum building, and Virgil van Dijk has made the message clear. Good performances matter, results matter more, but consistency is what separates serious sides from the rest.
After a comeback win over Atletico Madrid in midweek and a 2-0 league victory against Ipswich Town before that, Liverpool now have the chance to make it three wins on the bounce at Anfield against Fulham. The captain is not interested in noise or sentiment. He is focused on standards.
In his programme notes, Van Dijk said: "After an important and, in my opinion, well-deserved win over Atletico Madrid, it is great to be back at Anfield again this afternoon as we return to Premier League action against Fulham.
"I thought the atmosphere on Wednesday night was exceptional, particularly in the second half as we chased the victory.
"I have said many times that we are at our best when everyone is pushing together, and I hope you can see how hard we are all working to give you a team to be proud of."

After a promising start with two wins, RB Leipzig have suffered back-to-back defeats to Werder Bremen and Como, sparking significant criticism in the press and on social media.
RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer has now shared his thoughts on the situation, acknowledging that the team's recent performances have fallen well below expectations.
"We have, of course, seen what has been said about the club in the press and on social media over the past few days. We are highly ambitious, but we are also critical of ourselves. The last two results have not been good enough. We know that, and we are not going to sugar-coat it. We are addressing the situation very clearly internally," Schäfer said in a statement released by RB Leipzig on Friday night.
Despite the recent setbacks, Schäfer was keen to underline the club's full support for new head coach Martin Demichelis and his squad, stressing that, given the significant changes made at the club over the summer, it's only natural that the team will need time to fully gel.
"At the same time, we are staying calm and focused, and we are united as a club. That applies to everyone who works here, the players and the entire coaching staff. They all have our full support and trust," he said.

Uncrowned has Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn live results, round-by-round updates, ring walks, highlights and start time for the Garcia vs. Benn fight card on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Two of boxing's biggest and most polarizing stars go head-to-head as Ryan Garcia defends his WBC welterweight ******* le against Conor Benn in the night's main event.
Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) captured the WBC welterweight ******* le with a dominant unanimous decision win over Mario Barrios this past February in Las Vegas. He has two defeats: a 2025 decision loss to Rolando "Rolly" Romero for the WBA welterweight ******* le and a seventh-round TKO at the hands of Gervonta "Tank" Davis in 2023.
Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) narrowly fell short against Chris Eubank Jr. in a Fight of the Year in April 2025. He avenged that defeat last November, knocking down Eubank twice in Round 12 to seal a masterclass performance.
Benn shocked the boxing world this past February by announcing a defection from Eddie Hearn's Matchroom to Dana White's Zuffa Boxing. Benn outpointed Regis Prograis in his Zuffa debut in April.
In the night's co-feature, former two-time IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) challenges WBC champion Noel Mikaelian (28-3, 12 KOs). Although there is no official confirmation yet, the WBC cruiserweight ******* le isn't expected to be on the line, with Mikalian set to be stripped by the sanctioning body upon the start of the bout.

Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTEN) reported on September 7 that it averaged 101 revenue-earning drilling rigs in the United States during August and 100 over the two months ended August 31.
The count measures rigs earning revenue under drilling contracts. The announcement provided no day rates, contract duration, utilization by rig class, or margins. Management explicitly cautioned that rig-count trends alone may not indicate financial performance.
For investors, the update supplies evidence that customers are putting equipment to work. Whether that activity produces better returns depends on the revenue earned and costs incurred for each contracted rig.
The two-month average is consistent with management's earlier outlook for approximately 100 U.S. rigs in the third quarter, compared with 92 in the second quarter. That supports an activity recovery from the prior quarter, although September will determine the final quarterly average.
There is also pricing evidence outside the monthly release. In its July 29 results, Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTEN) said recently awarded term contracts carried approximately 10% to 15% higher pricing than levels at the start of the year. Management attributed that improvement to higher demand and customer interest in structural rig upgrades. Those increases applied to recently awarded contracts, rather than the entire fleet.

Conagra Brands, Inc. (NYSE:CAG) faces a governance test alongside its turnaround. Reuters reported on September 7 that Institutional Shareholder Services, or ISS, recommended opposing executive compensation, citing weak financial performance and inadequately explained incentive targets.
The September 23 non-binding advisory vote covers fiscal 2026 named-executive compensation. It does not separately approve new CEO John Brase's package. Brase succeeded Sean Connolly on June 1, after fiscal 2026 ended, separating his compensation arrangements from the prior year's pay decisions.
The proxy lists Brase's annual base salary at $1.15 million, his annual incentive target at 150% of eligible salary, and annual long-term incentives of $7.3 million, split 60% into performance shares and 40% into restricted stock units. Incentive opportunities are not guaranteed realized pay.
Conagra Brands, Inc. (NYSE:CAG) needs executives willing to work through changes whose benefits may take several years to appear. Brase's priorities include restoring margins, investing in brands and the supply chain, simplifying operations, and rebalancing capital allocation.
A mix of performance awards and service-based equity can support that effort. Performance shares link rewards to results, while restricted units help retain leaders through disruption. Retention has value if it allows management to complete difficult changes instead of optimizing the next quarterly result.

Biohaven (BHVN) stock plummeted Thursday after the company paused enrollment in a midstage study of its seizure treatment due to safety concerns.
The Food and Drug Administration is now requiring Biohaven to ***** s the potential for human toxicity from a metabolite in the drug, opakalim. Opakalim is in testing as a treatment for focal onset seizures. But, in rats, it proved toxic.
Dosing is still ongoing. But the rodent toxicity setback likely delays potential regulatory approval. That's a boon for Xenon Pharmaceuticals (XENE), which is in late-stage testing with its drug, azetukalner. Both drugs work by opening potassium channels in the nervous system to calm overactive brain cells.
On the stock market today, Biohaven stock dropped 14.7% to 12.79. Shares fell below their 21-day and 50-day moving averages on the news, MarketSurge shows. Xenon stock slid a fraction to 58.80.
To ask for FDA approval, Biohaven will need the results of studies called RISE-2 and RISE-3. The hold was placed on the former, but the latter is still ongoing. The company expects to have the results from RISE-3 later this year.

Investors hammered Cooper Companies (COO) on Thursday after the medtech's fiscal third-quarter sales lagged Wall Street's expectations, leading to a guidance cut.
Specifically, the CooperVision segment — which sells contact lenses — missed expectations by 4.5%, William Blair **** yst Steven Lichtman said in a report. The miss was due to destocking. Further, the company opted against selling its CooperSurgical business following a strategic review.
"The 'no sale' is a surprise after management highlighted prospective buyers on the last earnings call," he said. "With CVI (CooperVision) results also disappointing, the stock moves back into the penalty box."
On today's stock market, Cooper Companies shares toppled 14.7%, closing at 54.17. Shares are already trading well below their key moving averages, IBD MarketSurge charts show.
Cooper said it couldn't sell the surgical division due to competition for its implantable contraceptive, Paragard, an intrauterine device. Zhihu Inc. (NYSE:ZH) disclosed on September 6 that a wholly owned subsidiary had signed a conditional RMB1.5 billion cash commitment to Tianjin Lisi Xingshen Equity Investment Partnership. The agreement, dated September 4, requires shareholder approval, with payments funded internally through capital calls.
Zhihu Inc. (NYSE:ZH) expects to hold no more than 30% of the fund and will have no role in daily management or individual investment decisions. The blind-pool structure asks shareholders to approve a manager and strategy before specific investments are identified. The fund targets early-to-mid-stage private AI and technology companies with significant mainland China connections.
The strategic rationale fits the company's existing capabilities. Zhihu Inc. (NYSE:ZH) is developing AI search, expert-data solutions and AI-enabled content businesses. Exposure to foundation models, infrastructure, robotics and applications could create technology partnerships and help identify emerging customer needs.
A specialist fund also supplies investment research, deal sourcing and portfolio oversight that would require substantial internal resources to replicate. For shareholders, the potential benefit combines investment returns with commercial opportunities for the core content platform. Any cooperation would still require separate **** sment and agreement.
There is an operating business to build around. Second-quarter paid content and intellectual-property operations revenue increased to RMB425.9 million from RMB408.2 million. Zhihu Inc. (NYSE:ZH) also reduced total operating expenses by 13% to RMB469.4 million. These results support a focused approach in which outside technology complements established content and expert relationships.

Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) reported that August less-than-truckload shipments per workday increased 1.1% year over year, while tonnage per workday rose 8.7% and weight per shipment increased 7.5%. For July and August combined, shipments per workday increased 1.0%, tonnage per workday rose 8.3%, and weight per shipment grew 7.2%.
The data show higher freight intensity, but most of the tonnage growth came from heavier shipments rather than strong shipment-count growth. The investment question is whether that mix can improve trailer utilization and spread terminal, driver, and line-haul costs across more freight without weakening yield or service.
Heavier shipments can support operating leverage when added weight fills available trailer capacity and moves through the network efficiently. The 218-terminal network of Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) may provide room to absorb incremental tonnage, although Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) did not disclose network utilization.
Second-quarter results offer evidence that higher volume can translate into improved economics. Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) increased tonnage per workday 8.4%, grew revenue 17.1%, and increased operating income 26%. The operating ratio improved to 86.9% from 87.8%, meaning operating expenses consumed a smaller share of revenue.
Pricing and shipment economics were mixed but constructive. Second-quarter revenue per shipment, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, increased 1.5%. If heavier freight continues to raise revenue per shipment while fixed network costs grow more slowly, Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) could produce additional operating leverage.

Royalty Pharma plc (NASDAQ:RPRX) disclosed that pelacarsen failed the Phase 3 Lp(a)HORIZON cardiovascular-outcomes trial conducted by Novartis AG (NYSE:NVS). The randomized, double-blind study enrolled 8,323 patients with elevated lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), and established cardiovascular disease.
Pelacarsen lowered Lp(a), but the study did not meet its primary endpoint of reducing cardiovascular events compared with placebo in the overall population. The endpoint combined cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke, and urgent coronary revascularization requiring hospitalization. Complete results have not yet been presented.
Royalty Pharma plc (NASDAQ:RPRX) provided Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:IONS) with $500 million in January 2023. The transaction allocated $150 million to pelacarsen royalties and $350 million to Spinraza royalties. The clinical failure shifts the financial focus from uncertain pelacarsen upside to recovery through Spinraza.
Royalty Pharma plc (NASDAQ:RPRX) acquired 25% of the Spinraza royalties received by Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:IONS) through 2027. That share increases to 45% in 2028 on Spinraza annual sales of up to $1.5 billion.
Following the HORIZON result, the Spinraza interest will revert after aggregate payments to Royalty Pharma plc (NASDAQ:RPRX) reach $550 million, equal to 1.1 times the original funding. Management expects the structure to recover the entire investment and generate a modest positive return despite the clinical failure.

Less than 24 hours away from Purdue's week two game against Wake Forest it's time for a final look back at Purdue's week 1 game against Indiana State. This week I asked you all to tell me if Purdue's performance against the Sycamores changed your expectations for the rest of the season. It seemed like a good thing to ask given that I had already asked all of you how you graded Purdue's week 1 performance. The results were not great if you're Purdue.
As you can see the majority of respondents graded Purdue at a C. That's not what you want out of week 1 when you're playing a cupcake. So given that C grade I was curious if that changed expectations up or down. Of course. there was also the option for no change. So, let's take a look at the results.
A whopping 76% of respondents didn't change their expectations after week 1 which honestly seems very reasonable, rationale, and not at all okay for this current internet age. Those 76% are the well adjusted respondents. 22% revised their expectations down and those are the people who likely graded Purdue much lower than a C. Honestly, I don't blame them. Then, there are the true sickos. 2% of respondents actually raised their expectations after week 1. I can only ******* ume Fame Ejiobe blew them away and their are pushing all their chips in on him. This time tomorrow we will have a much better idea of who this Purdue team is.
If you'd like to place a wager on tomorrow's Purdue vs. Wake Forest game the line is currently Purdue +2.5 and the O/U in 49.5 from our friends at FanDuel. If you're going to gamble please do so responsibly and don't gamble money that you aren't prepared to lose. Stay safe my friends.

25-year-old Guardians LHP Parker Messick made his MLB debut last August, and so far the results have been pretty spectacular. Even if they're helped a little by a lucky batting average on **** in play (he's at .264 for the season, the MLB average is .289). That's not a crazy outlier though, I don't think. Messick relies heavily on a 94-ish fastball and slightly slower sinker; that combo has been dynamite for him this season. He'll frequently mix in a change, less frequently some breaking stuff.
75 years ago, Bill Veeck pulled one of his signature wacky baseball stunts. He signed 3'7" Eddie Gaedel to the Browns' roster and had him pinch-hit in a game. Gaedel drew a walk — obviously his strike zone was small — and Veeck replaced him with a pinch-runner. The pinch-runner didn't score
Now, Veeck owned the St. Louis Browns at that time, not the team in Cleveland. (So this is kinda the wrong week for this post. I thought this happened in Cleveland, until I started writing it.)
But Veeck had owned the Indians for four years, selling them in 1950 when he needed money for a divorce settlement. And had done some notable things with the team, like signing the first Negro League player to join the American League, Larry Doby. (When manager Lou Boudreau introduced Doby to the team, three players refused to shake his hand — and Veeck got rid of all three.) In 1949, Veeck signed Satchel Paige, the oldest rookie to ever play in MLB at the age of 41; he'd pitch 155.2 innings over two seasons for the team (and then became a two-time All-Star with the Browns).
Veeck claimed the idea of using a small person as a pinch-hitter was his own notion… however, there'd been a 1941 story in The Saturday Evening Post called "You Could Look it Up" by James Thurber, author of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." You can read the Thurber story here, if you like. It has paintings by Norman Rockwell which are very detailed and striking, as usual:

Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán spoke at a press conference after the defeat against Sevilla FC to **** s the club's difficult sporting situation. The manager took responsibility and stressed the urgency of changing the team's momentum in the next match in Vitoria.
The Valencia coach explained part of the poor results by the constant loss of players to injury since preseason. Among those sidelined, he confirmed César's hamstring problem, an issue that seriously limits the squad's resources.
Despite the pressure, Corberán said he still has the same energy and enthusiasm as on day one to turn the situation around. He defended his players' commitment on the pitch and accepted the criticism, promising immediate answers for the fans on the field.
