Dallas Cowboys left guard Tyler Smith is scheduled to undergo thumb surgery Tuesday and will be placed on injured reserve, the team announced Sunday. A pro bowler each of the last three years, Smith is set to miss the first four weeks of the season, at least, and potentially more after head coach Brian Schottenheimer put his timeline at 4-6 weeks.
It's a tough break for a Cowboys offensive line looking to take another step forward in 2026 after paving the way for a top-10 rushing offense last season. With questions still remaining at right tackle, Smith's absence makes the line significantly weaker and changes the fantasy outlook for starting running back Javonte Williams.
One of the breakout fantasy stars of 2025, Williams won't find it easy repeating last year's 1,200-yard campaign and 4.8 yards per carry with Smith out.
Depending how Smith's backup performs in pass protection, this injury could also have an impact on Dak Prescott and his pass catchers after Dallas' line allowed the ninth-fewest sacks in 2025. But as a guard, Smith's impact begins in the rushing attack.
On the bright side, the pro bowler who only missed one game last season will return at some point. So any dip in fantasy value for Williams and others should only be temporary.

The Cowboys have two defensive captains this season, and both were acquired by trading Micah Parsons.
Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams are the Cowboys' defensive captains. A year ago, the Cowboys traded Parsons to the Packers for Clark and two first-round picks, and later they traded one of those picks to the Jets for Williams.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer singled out Williams as a leader who has meant a lot to the team.
"From the minute he got here, he's been about one thing, and it's winning," Schottenheimer said of Williams. "He's never won in the NFL and the leadership is real, the talent is incredible, but every decision that guy makes is based on what's best for us winning. I love that about him, and it's infectious. It rubs off. I love hearing him talk to the young linemen, the young defenders."
Unsurprisingly, quarterback Dak Prescott is the offensive captain and kicker Brandon Aubrey is the special teams captain. Schottenheimer said the players voted on the captains, and those four players were overwhelmingly the top vote getters.

Former Steele High School standout Terence Steele faces competition for his starting job on the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said newly acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones will challenge Steele for the starting right tackle job ahead of Dallas' Sept. 13 season opener against the New York Giants, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Steele, who played at Steele High School in Cibolo before going on to Texas Tech, has been the Cowboys' starting right tackle. Dallas acquired Jones, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Schottenheimer said he called Steele shortly after Saturday's trade to tell him the starting job would be up for competition.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer shared the team's plan for the newly acquired Broderick Jones during a Monday press conference.
Jones played both left and right tackle during his time with the Steelers, but Schottenheimer said he will be playing on the right side in Dallas. Schottenheimer said he called Terence Steele to tell him about the impending competition after the Cowboys finalized the trade for Jones.
"As you can imagine, Terrence Steele was the ultimate pro," Schottenheimer said, via the team's website. "'Schotty, I get it, I appreciate the phone call. You didn't have to make the phone call.' And I said, 'I did, because I respect that you that much as a teammate and a player.' Broderick will be competing with Terence to be the starting right tackle of this football team."
Schottenheimer said that Steele is "1A" at right tackle right now and that Jones "has to show that he can do that" in order to wind up in the starting lineup. That competition will begin immediately and could extend beyond the Week 1 game against the Giants.

The Dallas Cowboys have a chance to go undefeated in the preseason for the first time in two decades if they can defeat the New Orleans Saints on Friday night. Given the culture forged by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the team wants to make it happen. While preseason results don't matter in regards to the regular season and playoffs, for some on the bottom of the roster fighting for a spot, it's everything.
The Cowboys might not know who's making the team at the end of the depth chart at receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback, or safety. It's rare, but occasionally a great showing in the final preseason game can be the thing that pushes someone onto the 53-man roster over someone else who doesn't have a good showing.
The Cowboys have one of the best defensive tackle combos in the NFL. If Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark aren't the best, they're definitely top tier. Otito Ogbonnia is an impactful veteran run stopper, and then the cupboard looks bare.
Jonathan Bullard should be a good veteran, but he has been out all camp and could be a cut candidate who goes to the practice squad and then is called up once he is completely healthy. In 326 snaps last season, he had a run defense grade of 63.9, average at best.
The other three in the group include 2025 draft pick Jay Toia and undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookies D.J. Withers and Tommy Dunn. Through two preseason games, Toia's run defense grade dropped from 65.9 against the Seattle Seahawks to 23.1 against the Cardinals. Dunn was consistent with a PFF run grade of 66.8 in both contests, and Withers had a run grade of 70.2 in game one and 68.2 in game two.

The Cowboys aren't ready to settle on a backup quarterback yet.
Sam Howell started their first preseason game with Joe Milton playing the second half and the two quarterbacks switched roles against the Cardinals last Saturday. On Monday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Milton has "performed beautifully in both games" and that Howell has "made a lot of plays too" while suggesting things remain too close to call.
"If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer said, via the team's website. "That's why we actually started Sam in the first game against Seattle. But Joe's put together two really good performances, and this will be another fun week for them to keep battling."
The Cowboys would prefer not to use either quarterback for any meaningful snaps during the regular season, but Dak Prescott's history and the league's general history suggests that might not be the case. That will make the competition a focal point heading into the August 30 cut to 53 players.

The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints could not seem to stop fighting one another during their scrimmage on Tuesday, and now they are paying for it.
The NFL announced on Thursday that Dallas and New Orleans have each been fined $500,000 for the "actions" that took place. This is obviously not a good look for anyone involved.
It was documented as the scrimmage wore on how the Cowboys and Saints simply could not stop fighting each other. There was never any specific culprit named from the "action", but Donovan Ezeiruaku was ejected in terms of transactional outcomes.
Brian Schottenheimer has said at many turns that the Cowboys need to be more disciplined this season, and this is certainly a step backwards in that effort. Obviously this was not an actual game and things can be said about who started what, but the facts are now that Dallas has literally been fined for improper activity of this sort.
Hopefully it is a learning opportunity moving forward.

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Von Miller can help the Dallas Cowboys on the field and their inexperienced group of edge rushers in the locker room.
"He's been in the game for a while. All-Pro, Pro Bowl guy, Super Bowl MVP, Super Bowl champion. He brings a lot of knowledge and experience," outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku said Monday, one day after Miller agreed to terms with his hometown team.
The NFL's active sack leader with 138 1/2 in 203 games over 14 seasons, Miller should bring the attributes on and off the field to further elevate what seems to be a much improved defense under new coordinator Christian Parker.
Miller had nine sacks in 420 snaps for the Washington Commanders last season, which would have led a Cowboys unit that was one of the worst in football by nearly any measure. Coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated the 37-year-old Miller would be used in a similar fashion, primarily allowing him to rush the quarterback.
"Still got first-step quickness. He still understand angles. He's still got a great **** ortment of counter moves," Schottenheimer said. "And, again, our plan to use him we think will help him be very, very functional. He's not going to play 60 plays a game. That's not what we're looking for."

Brown finished with three receptions for 75 yards, turning limited opportunities into the most memorable performance of the Cowboys' preseason opener.
Brown's first touchdown came on a 39-yard pass from Howell late in the second quarter. He struck again in the third, making a spectacular one-handed catch on a 20-yard fade from Milton.

The Seattle Seahawks are set to kick off their preseason opener at 5 p.m. PST against the Dallas Cowboys at Lumen Field. Here are four bold predictions surrounding main narratives in this game, which will give us the first taste of game action as defending champions.
First, I believe six to seven healthy running backs- George Holani, Jadarian Price, Emanuel Wilson, Velus Jones Jr., Jacardia Wright, TJ Harden, and Justin Jones- to get carries. We'll see them all side-by-side and make a fair evaluation on the eye test, then discuss after the game in takeaways and Studs & Duds. Maybe we'll even get a feel for the baseline RB pecking order at the current moment.
Second, don't sleep on Dallas' depth along both the offensive and defensive line. They've bolstered their formidable new interior duo of Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams with a plethora of edge pieces, from Otito Ogbonnia and Rashan Gary to Donovan Ezeraiku and Dee Winters, plus backups like Jaishawn Barham and rookie LT Overton out of Alabama that should play a lot tonight. This will be a much better measuring stick for the Seahawks' developmental pieces than the Raiders were last year. That could mean Mason Richman, Bryce Cabeldue and the rest of the backup offensive line need to step up and prove their level in the second half.
Ironically, Brian Schottenheimer returns to Seattle with low stakes, but his offense still struggles to move the chains more than it should. Expect him to try to go deep and to the boundary and get his young skill players involved, but with the Seahawks positively violent mentality which was featured on the most recent Hard Knocks, screens and out routes will be no match- regardless of the level of depth the game calls for.
Finally, Brian Fleury's offense will reveal its foundation to the world, or at least, whoever's watching this game. I don't know how much influence he'll bring from Kyle Shanahan or the San Francisco 49ers offense, or if it'll be productive. A first-time offensive play caller is as good an opportunity for surprise as any, so I expect this to be the talking point of the night when all is said and done. From scheme to personnel to culture, everything's different on defense for the Dallas Cowboys this year. A good thing, too, since last season marked a historically poor effort. In 2025, the Cowboys finished last in points allowed, 30th in yards allowed, and last in EPA/play allowed. They missed tackles, blew ******* ignments, and freelanced their way to complete and total ineptitude. Hence, the widespread changes.
Christian Parker, Dallas' new defensive coordinator, has been making headlines for all the right reasons since taking the helm. He's updated the scheme, added disguise, and emphasized intelligence and communication. As the Athletic's Jon Machota reported, he's becoming a disruptive force.
Machota reports Parker has his unit yelling at gametime volumes in practice and throughout meetings. Parker is taking the expression "practice how you play" to the next level in training camp and it's not only being noticed by the defense, but it's disrupting the offense as well. "It's loud in a good way," Brian Schottenheimer said of the method.
The 2025 Dallas defense had struggles across the board but one of those struggles was turning it on at game time. They struggled with communication and they never seemed to be on the same page. To make matters worse, effort and tenacity varied game to game and play to play, so it was anyone's guess what was going to happen at any given moment. Parker's methods are looking to fix those problems.
"We want the meeting room to sound the same as it does on the field," Parker said of his garish coaching methods. "Your brain doesn't know when you're not taking a physical rep. It just knows that your brain is strained."

Getting benched three times in the NFL helped him get there.
"Marty Schottenheimer, one of the greatest coaches and motivators to ever coach this game and who belongs here in Canton," Brees said Saturday. "Marty was my biggest fan. He would tell me all the time, even as he benched me three times and made me fight for my job every year with two greats, Doug Flutie and Philip Rivers.
"The first two times I got benched, I deserved it. The third time, I still don't think I deserved it, Coach. But nonetheless, it lit more than a fire. It forced me to access a place in my mind and heart that I had not yet been. The adversity was not expected, but very necessary. I would never have reached the heights I did without it. I knew I needed to play better, but more importantly, I knew he believed I would play better."
Brees eventually left the San Diego Chargers and joined the New Orleans Saints, where he won a Super Bowl playing for coach Sean Payton and became one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, to the delight of fans who filled the Superdome with chants of "Who dat?"

Just because a team invests big on an NFL player, doesn't mean that player will automatically live up to expectations. So, when the Dallas Cowboys invested a first-round pick and a four-year, $13,155,806 contract to make Tyler Guyton their next starting left tackle, they bet on the upside but understood the risk of the unknown. For the first two years of the deal, risk was about all that was being seen.
Injuries and effort stunted Guyton's development early, placing his long-term future in doubt. It got to the point Brian Scottenheimer had to call his left tackle spot a competition heading into training camp. Options were limited but reserve tackle Nate Thomas had shown promise in the past. While this was likely motivational more than reality, Schottenheimer's threats seemed to have worked. Left tackle is now Guyton's job to lose and Thomas is firmly positioned behind the first rounder on the depth chart.
Guyton's success is clearly in the best interests of the Cowboys. At 6-foot-7, 322 pounds, Guyton is built like a prototypical blindside protector. Together with a long reach and tremendous athleticism, Guyton's ceiling is far and away the highest ceiling of all tackle prospects on the roster.
Under contract for two more years and with a team option tacked on (must be executed following this season), Guyton can be an affordable starter on one of Dallas' most expensive units. A new deal will come due at just the right time, positioning the former Oklahoma product to play in Dallas long-term. Living up to his first-round expectations is a required step in that forecast.
"I think he's doing some really great things," Schottenheimer said of Guyton. "I think his sets are very compact, he's in control, he's not oversetting. He's playing the leverage game, his punches have been good but I don't think that's anything new to the [full] pads. I think that started with him being one of the first guys in the building. I think February, whatever I saw him, he was an offseason award winner."

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 season without much change on offense, but the defense will look very new with defensive coordinator Christian Parker running the show.
Parker added some key pieces to the defense this offseason, too, including former Ohio State star safety Caleb Downs in the first round and ex-Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary.
Dallas returns the core of its seventh-ranked scoring offense from 2025 with Dak Prescott under center. Running back Javonte Williams returned on a short deal, and star receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are both under contract. Pickens, though, will be playing on the franchise tag.
The Cowboys eked out a 7-9-1 record to finish second in the NFC East a year ago. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and owner/general manager Jerry Jones will be looking for improvement in 2026.

The Dallas Cowboys wereoff on Friday, which means it's a good time to take stock of where the team stands. There's not a ton of critical information to pull from just 48 hours of practice time, but the trends are starting to develop on both sides of the ball.
Here are three questions we're left with heading into the weekend around Cowboys training camp.
After two days of camp, head coach Brian Schottenheimer sounds very confident in DeMarvion Overshown's ability to wear the green dot on defense. Schotty said the team ran through a scenario in which the headset communication between Christian Parker and Overshown broke down. It was up to Overshown to make the right call. The Dallas head coach praised the young linebacker for getting the team in the right spot.
It's no secret the Cowboys linebacking core is a question mark right now, and it starts with who the team feels confident in to lead the defense and relay the calls on the field. Schottenheimer said there are about three or four players that will rotate the mic responsibilities as camp moves along.
The Cowboys could be looking to add at linebacker through a potential trade or free agent addition, so all options remain on the table for now.

Actually, that didn't happen with Dallas' sideline headphones at the Wednesday, July 29, practice, but coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker let linebacker DeMarvino Overshown think that's what was happening.
Call it a test, and the Texas alum passed. Safety PJ Locke also did well on tests of a more serious nature, as his knee injury doesn't seem to be that bad. And Texas alum Jaydon Blue is off to a quick start in the battle for RB2.

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — When Dak Prescott arrived at training camp Tuesday, he wore a vintage t-shirt celebrating the Dallas Cowboys' last Super Bowl win as a statement of intent.
After 10 years in the NFL without a meaningful playoff run for an organization that has not claimed a championship since after the 1995 season, their star quarterback is ready to end those droughts through his deeds, words, and even wardrobe choices.
"To go into training camp and to go into the season to say that those are our goals, I mean, it'd be stupid or we'd be remiss not to own that, and take accountability in that, and take pride in saying this is what we want to be and what we want to do," Prescott said Thursday.
Prescott admitted to being "definitely less patient" when it comes to the lack of postseason success, his angst rising after missing the playoffs each of the past two campaigns. He has a 2-5 record in playoff games and never reached an NFC championship game, something the Cowboys have not done over the previous 30 seasons.
However, Prescott believes the pieces are in place for the organization to move past those struggles. He expects a potent offense to be even better in its second season under head coach Brian Schottenheimer by benefitting from improved continuity on the offensive line and further growth from the pairing of standout wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens in their the second year together.
