There is a reason Matt Campbell wanted to bring Rocco Becht from Iowa State to Penn State once he took over as the head coach in Happy Valley. Becht gave Campbell and Penn State an experienced starter at the most important position on the football field, and that veteran presence was shining in the season opener against Marshall.
Becht passed for 271 yards and four touchdowns to four different wide receivers in Penn State's 45-0 victory over the Thundering Herd. With Becht leading the offense, Penn State put points on the scoreboard on each of their first three possessions in the first quarter. Becht took advantage of his existing chemistry that carried over with a handful of former Iowa State teammates like Brett Eskildsen, Chase Sowell, and tight end Ben Brahmer (all three caught one of Becht's touchdown passes), and he may have found a new favorite go-to target in Koby Howard, who had a game-high 161 receiving yards.
"I thought Rocco was really efficient today in terms of, you were getting eight, nine guys in the box, you were getting a lot of pressure," Campbell said when discussing Becht's performance in Week 1. "I didn't know exactly what to expect, and I think for Rocco to be able to handle that and distribute the ball, sometimes being a great quarterback is like being a great point guard, you got to be a great distributor of where the ball needs to go, and I thought he was outstanding today."
The success of the passing game, including when backup quarterback Alex Manske came in to relieve Becht in the second half, helped make up for a pretty slow start for the running game. Penn State had just 62 rushing yards at halftime and never seemed to find cracks for some big gains on the ground. The rushing yardage piled up a bit more in the second half as the bench started getting some time on the field. Carson Hansen led the Nittany Lions with 48 rushing yards and Cam Wallace picked up 47 yards once he got some playing time in the second half with the game well in hand.
A slow day on the ground from the starters didn't seem to bother Campbell too much in his postgame press conference, although it will certainly be something to watch in the coming weeks. But as long as the football is moving down the field, Campbell seems satisfied with the end result.

Twin brothers Jordon and Mitchell Ricker have done just about everything together, from playing football at MacArthur to earning their degrees from the same college institutions.
But Thursday night was something new in the Rickers' intertwined history.
The Rickers faced off against each other for the first time as head coaches as Jordon's MacArthur Brahmas faced Mitchell's Burbank Bulldogs in their season opener at Alamo Stadium. The brothers enter their second year as head coaches in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Ties have been strained as Bangladesh accused Indian border forces of forcibly pushing in people while it seeks extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has lived in exile in India since her ouster in a protest movement in August 2024.
"If there is a security arrangement among Islamic nations in the Middle East, it is not unusual for us to consider participating. It is being viewed positively," said junior foreign minister Humayun Kabir.
"They are inviting the leadership of Bangladesh, particularly Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, to come and participate," he told reporters on Monday.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced its squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, with Ibrahim Zadran taking over as the team's full-time T20I captain and pacer Naveen-ul-Haq returning to the side after recovering from injury.
The series will mark Zadran's first ***** ignment as Afghanistan's permanent T20I skipper after he took over the leadership duties from Rashid Khan.
Naveen's return is a major boost for Afghanistan's pace attack. When Andrew Rappleyea was deciding whether to stay at Penn State or transfer after last season, he received a message from new Nittany Lions offensive line coach Ryan Clanton.
"Coach Clanton sent me a picture of one of our formations," Rappleyea recalled. "It was 14 personnel (one running back and four tight ends). He said, 'We need you here.' It was pretty funny. They use tight ends a lot. They produce them. They have good ones."
The Nittany Lions have several of them this season, giving them a deep group and perhaps the strongest position on the team.
Ben Brahmer, Gabe Burkle and Cooper Alexander transferred from Iowa State to join Matt Campbell, their coach with the Cyclones. Rappleyea, Finn Furmanek and Brian Kortovich remained at Penn State.

The days of recruiting an elite group of players and developing them over the course of a few seasons are mostly gone in college football. There are still a few teams that operate that way, but building through the transfer portal is more of a viable option than it's ever been before.
Penn State will be one of those teams this season, with more than 20 transfers on the roster from Iowa State alone. At least one player in that group is bound to have a massive impact, and USA TODAY's Austin Curtright believes it will be quarterback Rocco Becht.
Curtright listed 10 of the most impactful transfers in the Big Ten, and while he didn't rank them numerically, Becht was placed among some heavy hitters. He became one of the most decorated passers in Cyclones history — finishing top-three in passing yards and touchdowns — and hopes that success will translate to a more talented conference.
Becht will have a familiar supporting cast with the Nittany Lions, which should help ease the transition. Mayfield's father, Corey Mayfield Sr., appeared in 27 NFL games as a defensive lineman in the 90s.

In his memoir of life in the tech industry, "Chaos Monkeys," Antonio Garcia Martinez wrote that it's not the rats who first abandon a sinking ship but rather the crew members who know how to swim.
By that measure, Brooks Koepka made like Michael Phelps, presciently jumping overboard early from LIV Golf and stroking his way to safe harbor. Now that the Good Ship Yasir seems doomed for the sea floor — the bullshit that long acted as ballast having shifted to expose the dead weight of washed-up hangers-on — those who remained are left eyeing leaky life rafts.
Just two members of LIV's roster matter, no matter how much its CEO, Scott O'Neil, blathered about the importance of Dean Burmester on the South African stop. They are Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. The former because every carnival needs a barker, the latter because leagues need credible competitors. While DeChambeau remains welded to LIV, Rahm's tone has been lukewarm and several sources in his orbit are convinced he'll exit soon. He has alternatives, but they're not painless and require accepting conditions that the prideful Spaniard might balk at.
Rahm's obvious first choice for life after LIV would be returning to compete on the PGA Tour. He lives in the U.S., and it's the most lucrative, competitively demanding and commercially relevant circuit. But no one around the Tour thinks Rahm will be offered the terms Koepka accepted, and many believe he'd be asked to pay stiffer financial penalties, accept restricted playing privileges and perhaps even apologize (for what, and to whom, is unclear). How would that sit with a man who went to war with the DP World Tour in Europe over comparatively modest fines?
Koepka chose to leave LIV with time remaining on his contract. By that measure, Brooks Koepka made like Michael Phelps, presciently jumping overboard early from LIV Golf and stroking his way to safe harbor. Now that the Good Ship Yasir seems doomed for the sea floor — the bullshit that long acted as ballast having shifted to expose the dead weight of washed-up hangers-on — those who remained are left eyeing leaky life rafts.
Just two members of LIV's roster matter, no matter how much its CEO, Scott O'Neil, blathered about the importance of Dean Burmester on the South African stop. They are Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. The former because every carnival needs a barker, the latter because leagues need credible competitors. While DeChambeau remains welded to LIV, Rahm's tone has been lukewarm and several sources in his orbit are convinced he'll exit soon. He has alternatives, but they're not painless and require accepting conditions that the prideful Spaniard might balk at.
Rahm's obvious first choice for life after LIV would be returning to compete on the PGA Tour. He lives in the U.S., and it's the most lucrative, competitively demanding and commercially relevant circuit. But no one around the Tour thinks Rahm will be offered the terms Koepka accepted, and many believe he'd be asked to pay stiffer financial penalties, accept restricted playing privileges and perhaps even apologize (for what, and to whom, is unclear). How would that sit with a man who went to war with the DP World Tour in Europe over comparatively modest fines?

ARDMORE, Pa. — Merion, the club and the course, is about as English as anything American thing could be, and Sunday here — for the finale of the 126th U.S. Amateur — was dank and wet and of-so-English. An Englishman was playing a kid from California. The Englishman won. Not a shocker.
There was something truly great about this Am, the whole seven days of it: six days of hot, dry golf leading to this rainy, cool Sunday; 312 players whittled down to two; and a final featuring two totally dissimilar golfers. Jack Whaley, deeply tanned and powerfully built, grew up in Doncaster, England, plays at Florida State and has a ready-for-the-Tour swing and a grind-it-out demeanor. Jay Leng Jr. grew up in San Diego, plays at Stanford, could not weigh 130 pounds, has a stance wider than Moe Norman's and a backswing shorter than Jon Rahm's, and follows no known playbook but his own. It was a delight watching these two go at it in this 36-hole final. Whaley won the match with a birdie on 15, the final nail in his 4-and-3 victory.
Arnold Palmer, who won this event in 1954, offered this as a swing tip for life: "Swing your swing." A cousin to you do you. Leng, winner of the Western Amateur earlier this summer who will represent the U.S. at next month's Walker Cup at Lahinch in Ireland, did not know Palmer's three-word phrase but understood its message. "I've always done things my own way and it seems to be working so I don't see any reason to change now," Leng said Sunday night, about to board a van for a ride back to the clubhouse as Whaley's new trophy was being brought to the 15th green.
By 14, Leng was playing without a hat, his black hair so wet he looked like he had just stepped out of a shower, his shirt close to soaked. Asked if he had learned anything over the course of the day about playing in the rain, he said, "Maybe carry more towels?" He was wet and worn out and tired. A U.S. Amateur can take a lot out of a guy, and so can golf in a steady rain.
Andy North won his two U.S. Opens playing in cold and wet conditions. He is now a member of the USGA executive committee — nice get, USGA! — and was at the award presentation. "Not a shock to see a player from England play so well in these conditions — you would think he has a lot of experience at it," North said Sunday night. "Playing in the rain really requires you to stay as dry as you possibly can while keeping your mind totally focused on the shots you have to make, never giving in to the rain for a second." Andy North was a master of keeping two towels in the spokes of his umbrella while playing in the rain, one for the grips, the other for his hands.

When Brooks Koepka announced his departure from LIV Golf, the PGA Tour was put into a difficult position.
While it was important to punish Koepka for jumping ship to the competition, the PGA Tour could not deny that having the five-time major champion back would be a boost.
There is a debate to be had about the terms offered to Koepka. And it seems that plenty of tough decisions may be just around the corner for Brian Rolapp with LIV Golf's future in serious doubt.

Test cricket returns to Australia's tropical Top End for the first time since 2003 when the hosts take on Bangladesh in a two-match series beginning Thursday.
The first Test at Marrara Stadium in Darwin will be Bangladesh's first Test tour of Australia in more than 20 years. It also starts a 12-month period in which Australia are scheduled to play at least 20 Tests, including series against South Africa, India and England.
Australia are set to bring back their main bowling attack, with Pat **** mins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon returning from injuries. Mitchell Starc is also in the side.
Injuries have meant the four have rarely played together in recent series. Hazlewood's expected return means Scott Boland will miss out, while allrounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster are also in the starting XI.
"We know Scotty's class, it is always a pretty tight call," **** mins said at a press conference on Wednesday. "There is not much you can say to Scotty except there is a lot of cricket coming up.
"He knows his worth, and how good he is, and I am sure he will be out there at some point pretty soon."
Australia's bowling attack looks settled, but there are questions over the batting order.
Jake Weatherald, the first Test player from Australia's Northern Territory, has kept his place after Australia's Ashes win over England last season despite his recent form. He is expected to open with Travis Head.
Usman Khawaja's retirement has allowed Australia to play both Green and Webster in the same XI. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith will bat at No. 3 and No. 4, with Labuschagne also looking for runs to strengthen his position in the side.
Bangladesh will be without Nahid Rana, Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam for the first Test. Shoriful could return for the second match in Mackay from August 22 to 26.
Rana, 23, is one of Bangladesh's quickest bowlers and was a key part of their ODI series win over Australia two months ago. He suffered a side strain during a T20I against Zimbabwe in July.

During her three varsity cross country seasons in the burnt orange of Eldorado, Gianna Rahmer has proven to be invincible.
There's not been a single race contested inside of New Mexico where she hasn't finished first, and in just about every single one of those events, ******* ody has really challenged her supremacy in the Class 5A division. Rahmer's long stride, smiling face and hot pink bandana crossing the finish line all by her lonesome, with no rival in sight, has become a rather standard snapshot in these parts.
Might that scenario change this fall?

We have seen plenty of blown opportunities and near misses in golf history.
Greg Norman's 1996 Masters and Jean Van De Velde's 1999 Open Championship collapse live long in the memory as examples of players throwing away their final day leads.
Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament after he tested positive for COVID, giving up his sizable lead. But never have we seen a player simply not show up for their tee time on Sunday while leading a tournament.
But that's nearly what happened to Bert Yancey at the 1966 Memphis Open Invitational, as he nearly lost a chance to win after sleeping in too long.

Former Superman actor Dean Cain has been forced to eat his words after a failed attempt to discredit rising Democratic star Abdul El-Sayed.
Cain, a 60-year-old vocal supporter of Donald Trump, tried to go after the Michigan Democratic nominee for Senate in a social media post after El-Sayed, 41, made a jab at Trump on CNN Sunday.
"Has anyone ever seen a photo of Michigan Senate candidate Abdulrahman Mohamed El Sayed (D) playing High School football?" the Cain wrote in an X post. "He says he was captain of the team, but I can't find a single photo. Internet, please do your thing."
Cain's replies were filled almost instantly with pictures of El-Sayed in football gear, with X users pointing out that the politician had shared one of the pictures himself on Instagram in March.
"This literally took 2 seconds," one X user wrote. Another commented: "Wow - that's your (failed) attempt at a 'gotcha'? I'd say stick with acting but ***** ody is interested in seeing that."
