Fans will get to see two of the better defenses in the NFL face off in Jacksonville as the Browns fly in to face the Jags in week one. It also happens to be the first game back since October of 2024 for Deshaun Watson, a player who has found immense success over the course of his career vs. the Jaguars.
First though, let's discuss this vaunted Cleveland defense. If not for their putrid offense, this might have been the best unit in the NFL last season. The Browns led the NFL by allowing just 22.6 yards per drive, ranked fourth in yards per play (4.8), and fifth in pressure rate (38.1%).
They also happened to lead the league with 117 tackles for loss on the season.
It's no secret that much of that success can be attributed to one Myles Garrett, but don't overlook who Cleveland got in return for this generation's best pass-rusher. Jared Verse knows how to rush the passer. Since 2024, Verse ranks only behind the previously mentioned Myles Garrett and the Jaguars' very own Josh Hines-Allen in pressures with 157 to his name.
In the secondary, the Browns have a familiar face at cornerback in Tyson Campbell. Following the trade, Campbell actually put together a solid season, allowing a 51% completion rate and eight PBUs. His teammate Denzel Ward also allowed a completion rate under 60%. This is a tough team to find success through the air against, allowing just 167 passing yards per game.

Tyrique Stevenson hasn't always had the smoothest tenure with the Chicago Bears. But it's easy to let specific demonstrations of lapses in judgment or other second-year struggles back in 2024 get in the way of the perception of a player that actually improved considerably in 2025.
After grading as the league's 86th-ranked (of 117) cornerback two years ago, Stevenson worked his way up to 50th last season with an overall grade of 64.4 from Pro Football Focus. Much of that, however, was pinned down by a 70th-ranked grade in coverage (59.6), despite an 85.5 run defense grade that had him third at the position. Even that former number was, technically, an improvement from the year prior.
Regardless of Stevenson's upside or limitations (the spectrum of which fans have seen both sides across his three seasons), this is a player obsessed with exactly one thing.

The Chargers dropped their final injury report of Week One and it's about as clean as you could ask for.
Edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu (hip) is listed as questionable after being a limited participant at practice for most of the week. He dealt with a lower-body injury to begin training camp and it looks like the team is still playing it cautious with him now that the regular season is here.
Cornerback Deane Leonard is the only player listed as out for Sunday's game after missing the entire week of practice. Leonard is the team's fourth cornerback and the best coverage player on special teams. His presence will be missed in the third phase of the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has dealt with a lot of trade rumors and highest-paid cornerback speculation over the past few months, but the real issue in contract talks is becoming more clear by the day.
According to PennLive's Nick Farabaugh, as well as Porter's own admission that he doesn't care about becoming the highest-paid corner, the contract negotiations are all about guaranteed money.
"Repeat after me -- It's not the AAV, it's the guarantees! (and always has been)," Farabaugh wrote via X.
So far this year, we've seen cornerbacks like Christian Gonzalez, Devon Witherspoon, and Trent McDuffie completely reset the cornerback market with deals surpassing $30 million per year. Their guaranteed money has been around 75% to 80% of their total contract value.

Melton, a fringe receiver but core special teamer, is expected to sign to the team's practice squad. The team plans to add him back to the 53-man roster following Week 1. Melton has four years of credited service so he is not subject to waiver claims by other teams.
The Packers have done similar roster maneuvers in the past, including releasing long snapper Matt Orzech only to later return him. The corresponding move for Melton's spot is not yet known.

After arriving in Australia a week before kickoff, the 49ers looked far more energized than the Super Bowl-favorite Rams, who touched down just more than 24 hours before the game and appeared visibly exhausted. Last year's NFL MVP, Matthew Stafford, looked helpless against a disruptive 49ers defense, while Brock Purdy diced up the opposition that was littered with big-time offseason acquisitions.

The Tigers allowed a one-play touchdown drive in the fourth quarter but otherwise clamped down on Archbishop Williams to post a 14-6 season-opening win on Thursday, Sept. 10.
"We got the defense together," said senior cornerback/running back Desahn Walker. "We kept on putting our foot on the (gas) pedal and got it done."
Walker got it done on both sides of the ball as he ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend the Tigers' lead to 14-0 with 5:59 remaining.

The San Francisco 49ers forced their first turnover of the 2026 NFL season in the second quarter of their Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
Cornerback Renardo Green, covering Rams reciever Puka Nacua, hauled in the interception at the 49ers' 13-yard line with 8:52 left in the second quarter. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, from the 49ers' 35-yard line, tried to hit Nacua on a long pass, but Green intercepted it.

The star defender chatted with reporters from his locker following Thursday's practice. He was asked about the NFL's discontinuation of their annual Pro Bowl Games, and didn't hold back on his thoughts . . .
Two weeks ago, the league announced that they'll no longer hold a competitive event to highlight their all-stars. Instead, beginning with the 2026 campaign, 88 players will be honored simply by being named Pro Bowlers.
NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent commented on the change in a statement upon the announcement.
"This direction came directly from our continued conversations with players and what they value most about the Pro Bowl," Vincent said. "Being selected by your peers, coaches and fans as one of the very best at your position carries tremendous meaning. When the New York Giants declined to pick up the fifth-year option of cornerback Deonte Banks earlier this year, it seemed like the beginning of the end for the embattled 2023 first-round pick.
But these aren't the Giants we've become accustomed to over the past 12 years. Failure is no longer in their vocabulary and will no longer be acceptable under new head coach John Harbaugh.
The Giants didn't pick up Banks' option because he hadn't earned it. His declining performance over the past two seasons didn't warrant the $12.63 million extension, but they weren't giving up on him. Banks would get a chance to get back into the good graces of the team with a solid offseason and training camp.
That has happened. Banks has worked hard and taken the advice the new coaching staff has been giving him. He appears to be not only a different player, but the player the Giants hoped they were getting when they traded three draft picks to move up one spot in the order to select him three years ago.

The Washington Commanders enjoyed a long weekend before returning to Ashburn on Monday in preparation for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. That extra time off brought some good news for the Commanders ahead of Sunday's opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

A first-round pick of the Ravens in the 2021 NFL Draft, Baltimore traded him to the Chargers last October after he got off to a slow start. After the trade, Oweh was outstanding, finishing with 7.5 sacks in 12 games for Los Angeles. Oweh then sacked Patriots quarterback three times in January's AFC Wild Card game.
Most of Washington's projected defense will be on the field next Sunday. Cornerback Trey Amos was placed on injured reserve last week, but everyone else is on track to play. Obviously, the Commanders will also be without star left tackle Laremy Tunsil (torn triceps) and defensive lineman Johnny Newton (torn pec), who were also placed on IR.

The cornerback market rose again in the early morning hours Tuesday as the New England Patriots and star defensive back Christian Gonzalez agreed to a record-setting four-year, $135 million extension with $102 million guaranteed just ahead of the team's season opener, insider Jordan Schultz reported.
Gonzalez's $33.75 million yearly average sets the new top mark for cornerbacks, just ahead of the $33 million average-per-year contract fellow 2023 draftee and Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon signed earlier this offseason.
Now, only one big-name cornerback contract dispute from the 2023 draft remains: the Steelers and Joey Porter Jr.'s "impasse."
Pittsburgh remains adamant in its policy of not negotiating with players during the regular season. And Porter hasn't closed the door on sitting out games if he isn't extended by Week 1. With the Steelers opening their season on Sunday, Sept. 13, the remaining window for an extension this offseason is rapidly shrinking — and the cornerback market keeps going up.
Porter is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
