More than 30 years ago, all over the walls of a high school about an hour west of downtown San Antonio, the signs started appearing.
In breezeways, next to lockers, and around the cafeteria, the motivational slogans kept popping up, some scrawled in magic marker on poster board, and others printed out on long sheets of dot-matrix paper. They were hung by a D'Hanis baseball coach who wanted to remind students that they could win anything with the "RIGHT MENTAL ATTITUDE," and that "PRESSURE MAKES DIAMONDS," and that "WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING."
A bunch of clichés, maybe, but harmless ones. The coach meant well, and his team wound up winning state.
One of his colleagues, though, was a world-class wiseacre, and couldn't resist the opportunity to poke fun. Bill Lovett coached boys basketball and taught history. And above the chalkboard in his classroom one day, there was a long dot-matrix printout bearing a slogan of his own creation.
"AN ELEPHANT IN DISGUISE IS STILL BIG," it read.

The dream for most football players is to play in the NFL eventually, and wide receiver Antonio Williams will officially realize that dream this coming Sunday when the Washington Commanders take on the Philadelphia Eagles.
Williams was a third-round draft pick out of Clemson. His 2024 campaign is probably the best indication of what he is capable of, after having over 900 receiving yards and leading the ACC in touchdowns that season with 11. Washington hopes to bring that kind of production to the Commanders this season, though he'll first have to get over his first-game jitters.
"I feel like if you ain't a little nervous, you don't care. And that's how I approach the game. So, yeah, when it comes out, that first play, I'll probably have a little jitters. But then once the snap goes, then it's game time."
Williams is not a stranger to a capacity stadium and electric game atmosphere. Clemson's Death Valley is well-known in college for its game atmosphere and traditions that make it a difficult place to play, and the Tigers traveled to some hostile places during Williams' time in college. However, it is different when you are playing in the NFL.
Also, Williams and the rest of the Commanders rookie class will not be able to experience a Washington Commanders home game until Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. This is the first time since 2012 that Washington has started their season with back-to-back road games.

Lanier senior running back Nicholas Torres rushedfor 131 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Voks defeated Jefferson 31-14 on Friday at the San Antonio ISD Athletic Complex in the two teams' District 14-5A-II opener.
"What I saw on the field was what we went over at practice," Torres said. "We just kept trying to pound the rock and run up the score."
Torres' efforts and a 1-yard rushing touchdown early in the second half from sophomore QB Erick Esparza propelled the Voks to a 17-6 advantage with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter.
After an early score, not much was going for Jefferson on offense, but the Mustangs kept plugging away on the ground, eventually punching in a 6-yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Michael Bejar.
The Mustangs lined up to attempt a 2-point conversion that would cut the deficit down to three, but Mother Nature had other plans as players and coaches were forced off the field due to a lightning delay.

Friday night's highly anticipated out-of-district contest between Steele and Austin Lake Travis at Lehnhoff Stadium was canceled in the third quarter due to weather. The two teams were tied at 28-28 with 04:42 remaining in the third quarter when the game entered a lightning delay.
The lightning delay began around 9 p.m. and the game was officially called around 40 minutes later due to the inclement weather. UIL guidelines say that activities must be suspended when lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius of the event venue. Activities may not resume until lightning is no longer within the 10-mile radius and 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike.
The 28-28 score will likely be counted as a tie toward Steele and Lake Travis' records, but it will not have playoff implications since it is from an out-of-district contest. Per UIL rules, any out-of-district varsity football games that have gone past halftime are considered to be official contests.
"If both teams have made a good faith effort to complete the game and have not been able to finish the game or mutually agree to end the game at the point of suspension, the game shall be declared final with the score at the time of suspension," the UIL website reads.
While suspended games could be restarted at a later time, the UIL does not allow games to be played past Saturday. Lake Travis is also roughly 70 miles away from San Antonio. Steele head coach David Saenz estimated that the game could have resumed around 11 p.m., around two hours after the contest was paused.

Liberty Hill hosts Vandegrift on Friday in a clash of two Central Texas high school football powers.
Running their traditional slot-T offense, the Panthers (2-0) have started their season in impressive fashion with wins over Killeen High and San Marcos.
Vandegrift (1-1) used a fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually take a 28-21 win over San Antonio Brennan in Week 1, then lost 38-7 to San Antonio Johnson in Week 2 in a rare home loss.
It's an intriguing matchup of a Class 5A Division II team in Liberty Hill vs. a Class 6A squad in Vandegrift.

Showing off his jewelry to Jared McCain, Aday Mara is hoping to add more championship rings in the future. Reading the room across the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder realized they needed serious size in the frontcourt to keep up.
You come to that realization when you see Victor Wembanyama beat you in the 2026 Western Conference Finals. The 22-year-old has arrived. He'll keep the San Antonio Spurs in the ***** le picture for the foreseeable future. Which directly conflicts with the Thunder and their ambitions.
In comes Mara. The Thunder drafted the 7-foot-3 giant with the No. 12 pick of the 2026 NBA draft. They hope he can strengthen their frontcourt depth for the foreseeable future and possibly be Chet Holmgren's running mate for the rest of the contending window.
Before we find out the answers to those valuable questions, though, Mara earned some well-deserved reflection on his collegiate journey. He showed off his rings on a recent social media post. After two so-so years at UCLA, his decision to transfer to Michigan completely changed his life for the better. He helped the Wolverines capture the 2026 national championship.
Michigan went a dominant 37-3 in the 2025-26 season. Mara's breakout helped with that. It had a three-headed frontcourt monster — alongside Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. All three went in the lottery range of the 2026 NBA draft. And head coach Dusty Mays joined the Dallas Mavericks in a rare college-to-NBA job promotion.

San Antonio has already seen its young core make a deep playoff run, but the work behind that rise does not stop when the game ends. The Spurs have built a system in which young players can learn from coaches, veterans, and former stars who understand what it takes to win in San Antonio.
That connection matters even more for Stephon Castle, who went from a rookie trying to find his place to one of the team's main guards in just two seasons. Now, he is starting to see what the Spurs' history can mean for the group trying to build the next chapter.
Castle views playing for San Antonio as more than a chance to wear one of the league's most recognizable jerseys. The franchise has produced generations of stars, and many of those players still stay close to the organization and its current roster.
"It's a blessing to play for an organization like that," Castle said, describing what it means to play for the Spurs. He also pointed to the people who came before him and the way they continue to stay involved with the team.

Stephon Castle showcases his gratitude for the Spurs legends' impactful support originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Across the NBA, there are plenty of iconic franchises. One of them is the San Antonio Spurs, a team with a history of success. They have won five championships in their time in the NBA, and their legends continue to stick around and help the next generation.
People like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, David Robinson, and many more are always present for the Spurs. This has helped the younger players because they know that they have some mentors to go to when they need help.
For any Spurs player, they will become familiar with the older figures within the organization who have been there for a long time. Of course, Gregg Popovich is probably the most recognizable one, as he is still the team president.
Mitch Johnson might have taken over as the head coach, but Pop still has an impact and influence on the players. Youngsters like Castle and Dylan Harper are benefiting from this because they know they have mentors to look up to.

RB Leipzig suffered a 4-1 defeat away to Como 1907 in their opening Champions League game on 10th September 2026.
Como begin on the front foot, pressing high and putting our boys under pressure from the outset. The first chances fell to Cesc Fàbregas' side.
Maarten Vandevoordt produced a fine save to deny Anastasios Douvikas in the 13th minute, but the goalkeeper was beaten two minutes later. Martin Baturina was able to get a shot away from close range inside the penalty area and found the back of the net to put Como 1-0 ahead (15').
RBL almost responded immediately. Straight from the restart, Antonio Nusa found himself one-on-one with Como goalkeeper Jean Butez after getting on the end of a long ball, but his finish was too central and Butez made the save (16').
Leipzig then began to create more opportunities. Andrija Maksimović and Marc Guiu, who were both making their first starts for the club, went close in quick succession. Butez first made an excellent save to keep out Maksimović's curling effort, before Guiu sent a promising header wide just seconds later (36').

Prior to Thursday's victory over the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks added some depth to their secondary with the elevation of AJ Finley to the 53 man roster to feel more secure in the home opener. With that came the corresponding move of cutting 2025's sixth round pick Bryce Cabeldue. If the Seahawks hoped to get him back onto the practice squad, their hopes were squashed.
Per Mike Garafolo, Klint Kubiak added the guard to his squad over in Las Vegas. With familiarity with the scheme that he runs, it makes sense that Kubiak would want Cabeldue to join him with the Raiders. With the ability to play both right guard and left guard, as well as right tackle and left tackle, that helps Kubiak's squad have depth along the offensive line that ranked dead last in the league in 2025. Improving the offensive line was a focus for Kubiak, adding Tyler Linderbaum to anchor the interior at center, Evan Neal, and drafting Trey Zuhn III.
As it stands right now, Cabeldue is the third left guard on the Raiders depth chart per ESPN behind Spencer Burford and Antonio Mafi.

Even though the season opener for the Washington Commanders is just days away, it is never too early to look ahead to the future and what the Commanders might do in the 2027 NFL Draft. In ESPN's most recent mock draft, Washington is projected to have the No. 10 overall pick and select wide receiver Charlie Becker out of Indiana.
First, it is notable that the Commanders are projected to have the No. 10 overall pick. ESPN projects no trade, meaning Washington is expected to have the tenth-worst record in the NFL and will not be close to making the playoffs.
This is a rather dismal prediction for a team that just reached the NFC Championship in 2024. Washington's fate relies on the health of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who suffered three different injuries last season. If he can stay healthy all season, the Commanders have a chance to compete for a playoff spot this season.
However, there are other concerns about Washington's playoff chances. Arguably the biggest concern for the Commanders going into training camp was the wide receiver depth. They have Terry McLaurin as the No. 1 receiver and signed Stefon Diggs as the No. 2, with rookie Antonio Williams expected to be the No. 3. It is unclear what Williams will bring to the table as a third-round draft pick, and McLaurin also missed time last year. Diggs is coming off his seventh 1,000-yard season in his career, so he should help Daniels out this season.
Overall, it is reasonable to believe that Washington may end up with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but that projection could change as the season goes on. If the Commanders do end up with a top-10 pick, Charlie Becker would not be a bad selection. Here is what ESPN's Jordan Reid had to say about Washington selecting Becker:

Week 1 of the 2026 Washington Commanders season has arrived.
Can you believe it? No more mini-camps, no more organized team activities, no more training camp, no more preseason games, no more massive cuts to get down to the 53-man roster. No more signing released players to ****** emble a 16-man practice squad.
Week 1 is on! The Commanders are preparing to face their opening opponent, two-time defending NFC East champion the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were the 2024 NFC and Super Bowl Champions, while Washington lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. The 2025 Eagles won the division, finishing 11-6, followed by Dallas at 7-9-1, Washington at 5-12, and the New York Giants at 4-13.
The Commanders' offense was one of the best in the NFL in 2024, averaging 28.5 points per game. But injuries to receivers, and in particular QB Jayden Daniels, cut offensive production to 20.9 points per game in 2025. OC Kliff Kingsbury and Dan Quinn didn't see eye-to-eye on how the offense would move forward. Consequently, Quinn remains the head coach, and Kingsbury departed and is now on Sean McVay's LA Rams staff.
The Commanders lost tight end Zach Ertz, so they signed free agent TE Chig Okonkwo. GM Adam Peters felt the Commanders really needed help at receiver, so he drafted rookie Antonio Williams 71st overall and then signed veteran free agent receiver Stefon Diggs. Also returning after one season in Jacksonville, is deep threat, Dyami Brown.

Charles Barkley, a former NBA player, believes the San Antonio Spurs have a promising future. The Spurs already have Victor Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 superstar who is at the center of the team's foundation. They also have De'Aaron Fox, a promising backcourt star veteran. In the franchise's recent postseason run, however, two youngsters took the spotlight.
Along with Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper demonstrated that they can contribute to the Spurs' promising future. During San Antonio's playoff run, Castle averaged 18.2 points, the second-most points on the team. Harper, meanwhile, averaged 14.1 points per game, the most from a player off the bench.

Charles Barkley issued a stern warning to other NBA backcourt players regarding their postseason performance during his recent appearance on "The Bill Simmons Show". Barkley also compared the Spurs' young guards to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
Those two guards, I don't want to see them for the next 10 years if I'm a guard in the NBA," Barkley said. "Harper and Castle, if I'm a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys for the next 10 years. They're gonna be the new Steph and Klay."

Victor Wembanyama has a gargantuan task ahead of him as he looks to bring the San Antonio Spurs back to basketball glory. He is entering his fourth season, and so far, he has done a good job.
Most recently, he willed the Spurs to an NBA Finals appearance, although they ultimately lost to the New York Knicks. The 2026 season marked the first time since 2019 that the Spurs made the playoffs, and they went all the way to the NBA Finals.
On a personal level, expectations are also high. Many believe Wembanyama can go down as one of the best players ever to grace the NBA. So far, he is exceeding the lofty standards set for him. He won the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year award unanimously and was named to the All-NBA First Team. He also came close to winning the Most Valuable Player award.
All eyes are on Wemby as he steps into greatness.
A member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team is also closely watching his development, believing the French star is carrying the torch for the next generation.

The second half of Real Madrid's summer transfer window was headlined by Jose Mourinho's incessant demands for a second centre-back signing.
While the club did sign Ibrahima Konate in the summer, the new manager saw a real need for a second starting-quality central defender, especially given Eder Militao's uncertain fitness and Antonio Rudiger's age.
One of the players who Mourinho saw as a top target, on that front, was Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni who will play at the Santiago Bernabeu later today in the first game week of the UEFA Champions League.
In a recent update, Diario AS confirm the reasons why Real Madrid did not end up signing Bastoni this summer despite the player being Mourinho's top target.
For starters, Inter Milan refused to let the player leave this summer for even a dime less than €70 million, and even the player was in no hurry to leave the club.

GREEN BAY, WI —This one wasn't nearly the laugher many predicted for Notre Dame football, but the fifth-ranked Irish eventually found their stride in a 41-13 win over unranked Wisconsin Sunday, Sept. 6.
Notre Dame (1-0) moved to 13-0 in Shamrock Series games, dating to their origin in 2009 against Washington State in San Antonio.
Successful homecoming: An emotional Green Bay homecoming ahead for Notre Dame's James Flanigan
Here is how we grade the Irish's performance against the Badgers.
As it turns out, losing a pair of first-round running backs to the NFL does impact a running game in the following season. At least it did in the first half, when Notre Dame's top trio of backs managed just 35 yards on 14 carries. Sullivan Asher replaced Styles Prescod at right guard to open the second half and made an impact as Aneyas Williams (two rushing touchdowns) got rolling after the break.

Victor Wembanyama gets a big shout-out from French UFC fighter Ciryl Gane originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Over the past decade, it has become clear that basketball is one of the biggest sports in the world. The rise of international players is a testament to this because there has not been an American regular-season MVP since James Harden's MVP in 2018.
Players like Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been dominant as non-American players. However, it seems San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is ready to carry the torch moving forward as the best player to come out of France, a country that's well-known for producing some elite athletes.
As the current UFC interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane knows what it's like to succeed. He is, in fact, a two-time holder of that **** le, so he is quite successful in his mixed martial arts career. The orthodox heavyweight striker stands out in the UFC with his natural talent and light feet despite being a 6'4" fighter.
Just like Gane, Wembanyama shares some traits with his fellow Frenchman. Being a giant who can move light on their feet is certainly a good trait to have, but it matters the most in a sport like basketball.

Deuce McBride realized ***** ody could stop the Knicks during the series against the Hawks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
During the 2026 Playoffs, the New York Knicks went on a magical run all the way to winning the championship. It all started with the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks, when they were tested the most. However, it seems that the Knicks players treated that series as a big lesson.
As an important rotation player, Miles "Deuce" McBride knows how much momentum matters for his team. Considering that the Knicks struggled early on during the series against the Hawks, turning that around was a big part of their success.
CJ McCollum was playing at a high level during the first-round series against the Knicks, which was enough for him to become the biggest opponent for the fans. Fortunately for the Knicks, they managed to swing the momentum in their favor with the 114-98 win in Game 4.
They never turned back, as they won 126-97 in Game 5 and finished the series off with a 140-89 victory in Game 6. After that win, they only lost one more game, which was during the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. It was a magical run that is on par with some of the best teams of all time.

As the calendar flips to September, we're officially in the quiet zone of the NBA year. Not much will go on until the final days of the month. All of the major offseason moves have already happened. Teams across the league enjoy some serenity before the marathon starts back up again.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will enter the 2026-27 season as co-title favorites — alongside the San Antonio Spurs. Even with their offseason departures, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren should keep them in the middle of the ***** le hunt.
With nothing else happening, Thunder Wire will regularly conduct Thunder Mailbags over the remainder of the offseason. In this edition, a social media user asked in the DMs — could Alex Caruso's regular-season role change with so many departures?
The Thunder added Caruso in a rare one-for-one player trade with the Chicago Bulls in June 2024. It was one of two offseason moves made that summer that signaled their readiness to take the next step as a serious ***** le contender. Safe to say the win-now move paid off. OKC won the 2025 NBA championship in his first year there and almost won another this past year.
In those two playoff runs, Caruso has been one of OKC's five most important players. Especially when you compare his pedestrian regular-season numbers. He's averaged 6.6 points on 43.3% shooting, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 ***** ists in the regular season. He's shot 32.2% from 3. And in the playoffs, those numbers jump up to 9.9 points on 46.2% shooting, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 ***** ists. He's shot 42.7% from 3.

September has arrived. The offseason is almost over. Right now, these are the final weeks of serenity until the 2026-27 regular season arrives. Once the marathon starts, the next nine months will be packed with games on an almost every-night basis.
Now that the summer is about over, we can safely say the Philadelphia 76ers had the brightest fireworks that rival the 4th of July night. They completely transformed their team with the additions of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. Alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese and VJ Edgecombe, it's easily the most star-studded starting five in the league.
The Sixers were part of arguably the two biggest moves of the offseason. First, they shocked the NBA world with a blockbuster deal. They landed Brown from the Boston Celtics for Paul George and four future draft picks. Fresh off a career year that saw him gain MVP buzz, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP joins an arch-rival.
Later on, Philadelphia eventually — to everybody's surprise — became the winner of the final James sweepstakes. The 41-year-old showed last season that he still has mileage left on his tires. He left the Los Angeles Lakers and left the Cleveland Cavaliers at the altar of a potential third reunion. Looks like he wants to compete for a ring in the final years of his all-time career.
Remains to be seen if that translates to wins, but the NBA schedule-makers have gone all out to parade the Sixers on the national stage. They're tied with the Lakers, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs for most national TV games at a maximum of 34 appearances. One of those is at OKC.

Inter completed an extraordinary comeback from 2-0 down to beat Napoli 3-2 with a Lautaro Martinez double and Marcus Thuram, sealing a true thriller at San Siro.
The top two in each of the last two seasons faced off, though the Nerazzurri had started stronger with victories over Monza and Cagliari. Marcus Thuram was still not fully fit and Djed Spence working his way back from injury, with John Stones and Hakan Calhanoglu rested ahead of the Champions League trip to Real Madrid.
Max Allegri had a rough week, losing at home to Como, then Scott McTominay and Giovane both required surgery, with Alessandro Buongiorno and Luca Marianucci already long-term absentees. Antonio Vergara was preferred to Kevin De Bruyne due to match fitness.
Napoli were unbeaten against Inter since the Supercoppa Italiana Final in January 2024, managing one win and four draws going into this test.

Nvidia's (NVDA) big deal for Hugging Face makes strategic sense not only for Nvidia, but for a wider tech industry barreling right through the AI era.
"Jensen [CEO Jensen Huang] knows this [deal] is very strategic. So in the end, if he's helped accelerate the momentum of adoption [of AI] in enterprise, that's all good news," Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) CEO Antonio Neri told Yahoo Finance in an interview.
The acquisition — confirmed on Thursday — gives the chip giant direct access to the world's largest repository of AI models and datasets. That repository is used by over 18 million developers and 200,000 enterprise organizations worldwide.
Strategically, the move gives Nvidia unparalleled real-time visibility into developer trends, popular model architectures, and emerging framework preferences across the global AI ecosystem.
Added Neri, "We need to find ways to continue to optimize the economics because the reality is that you're going to use different types of tokens from different types of models to deliver the outcome. You're looking at an AI agent process approach. So you're going to have frontier models, open-source models and open-weight models. But the reality is also that China obviously has been a big contributor to the open-source community and is leveraging the open-source community for their own needs. So we need to strike a balance, and therefore having a much stronger presence in the open source communities is incredible."

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is clearly smack in the middle of the AI profit boom.
"Customers are buying everything," Hewlett Packard Enterprise CEO Antonio Neri told Yahoo Finance in an interview, pointing to brisk demand in its most recent quarter for routers and servers.
Neri said demand for the company's products looks strong through the next decade.
HPE generated revenue of $12.21 billion in its fiscal third quarter, reported late Wednesday, up 34% year over year. Adjusted earnings per share climbed over 30% to $1.11.
Both the top- and bottom-line figures comfortably surpassed Wall Street consensus estimates.

Von Miller found a unique way to get his preferred jersey number with the Dallas Cowboys: He made a teammate a part-owner of his chicken farm.
Miller will wear No. 40 this season after striking a deal with fullback Hunter Luepke, who will switch to No. 30, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Instead of paying Luepke cash, Miller offered him a stake in Greener Pastures Chicken, his Texas-based poultry business.

De'Aaron Fox has a new pair of sneakers for the upcoming season, and Spurs fans can get their hands on them, too.
The San Antonio Spurs guard's third signature sneaker with Under Armour, the Fox 3, hit shelves Friday. The shoe debuted in the colorful "Gamer" colorway and retails for $125 through Under Armour and select retailers.
Under Armour first unveiled the Fox 3 in August, saying it was designed around the biggest part of Fox's game: his speed and ability to stop on a dime.
The Fox 3 weighs 11.9 ounces, making it lighter than its predecessor. It features a lightweight mesh upper, Charged cushioning, a TPU shank for stability and a Flow outsole designed to support quick bursts, hard cuts and sudden stops.
"Every version of my signature shoe has gotten better because we keep learning from how I move and what I need on the court," Fox said in an Under Armour news release.
