There was little wrong with the Frenchman's attempt — firmly struck and aimed towards the corner — but the Spaniard made a superb save to deny Le Fée his second success from twelve yards inside a week. And when everyone's favourite villain Bruno Guimaraẽs duly fired a venomous dipping shot past Robin Roefs barely minutes later, it felt like the classic one-two punch and it ultimately defined the game.
Sunderland more than held their own in this contest; we looked sharp, combative and were able to fashion a number of decent chances against the defending champions, but the finishing touch eluded the Lads on this occasion and that somehow made the loss even more frustrating.
We know we're capable of giving the league's big guns a run for their money on any given day, and occasionally emerging victorious, but during what could easily be a "difficult second season", we need to find ways to bridge the gap and to continue to eke out points from tricky positions.
A disappointing outcome. The 0-2 scoreline might've felt slightly harsh and Reinildo's late red card was a sickener, but the way the game panned out wasn't entirely unexpected, given ******* nal's current status and Sunderland's ongoing attempts at evolution.

I have spent much of this week watching Australian coverage of the NFL and scrolling through social media posts as the 49ers and Rams prepare to play the first regular-season game in Australia. The coverage has been entertaining, enthusiastic and occasionally educational. There have been explanations of the rules, breakdowns of the equipment and attempts to introduce American football to a country that already has a sport called football.
The Aussies are excited. Nearly 100,000 people are expected to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Moreover, the NFL has taken over the city. The Jonas Brothers will perform at halftime, and Tourism Australia has built an advertising campaign around the game featuring wildlife conservationist and television personality Robert Irwin. He's the son of the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin. In addition, Netflix will distribute the game globally.
It should be a spectacular event. I'm just not convinced it proves football has become a global sport.
This season, the NFL is staging nine regular-season games in seven countries outside the United States. That represents an extraordinary expansion from the occasional London game of the past. The league is no longer simply testing international markets. Moreover, overseas games have become an important part of its schedule, television strategy and marketing machine.
However, more games in more countries don't automatically mean football has developed deep roots in those places.

HOPATCONG — Before Hopatcong's season opener, Alexa McLean said all the same things to the soccer players as most other coaches would. She just said them in a slightly higher register, occasionally referring to one or another of the boys as "honey." McLean called out her starters' names with a lilt belying her Ecuadoran American roots.
During the match, McLean strolled the sideline with her phone on a sparkly cross-body strap bouncing off her hip, a green dry-erase board printed with soccer lines and a white marker in her right hand. She gave a continuous flow of suggestions and encouragement, mostly in English. But occasionally, McLean switched to her native Spanish.
A Spanish and English as a Second Language teacher at Hopatcong, McLean was an ****** istant with the boys soccer team two years ago. Last fall, she helped the soccer team at the Academy of St. Elizabeth – an all-girls school in Morris Township – to a 1-15 record in her first high school head coaching job.
But the commute was too much. When the Hopatcong boys' job opened up, it seemed a natural fit.
"I wasn't sure how I was going to be accepted by the boys," said McLean, 52, who didn't start coaching in high school until her four kids had all graduated. "I haven't had an issue. I took a little (while) for them to get used to me and me to get used to them, but it's working out."

One of the biggest priorities for Bayern Munich this summer was finding a solution for João Palhinha, and Michael Reschke believes the club finally managed to put a difficult chapter behind them.
"Most importantly, of course, they've resolved the Palhinha situation. That whole affair cost a fortune and certainly annoyed everyone, but these things happen. It's impossible for every transfer to be a success," Reschke told Abendzeitung.
Bayern Munich paid Fulham €51 million up front for Palhinha in 2024, with the deal potentially rising to €56 million with add-ons. After struggling to establish himself as a regular starter, he spent last season on loan at Tottenham before Bayern Munich ultimately moved him on.
The financial investment made Palhinha one of the more disappointing transfers of recent years, particularly given the limited return Bayern Munich received on the pitch.
But Reschke's point is that even clubs as successful as Bayern Munich will occasionally get a transfer wrong.

Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter received record-setting contract extensions this offseason, but neither defensive tackle views financial security as a reason to become comfortable. During his appearance on "Takeoff with John Clark," Davis spoke strongly about a close-knit Eagles defensive line that holds its members accountable before position coach Clint Hurtt needs to intervene.
That approach extends to conditioning.
Vic Fangio challenged Davis to improve his conditioning after arriving in Philadelphia, and the results were evident during Davis' breakout 2025 season. Longtime baseball reporter Francys Romero reported Sunday evening that Cuban OF Lazaro Montes will be called up to the Seattle Mariners, with Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reporting that the move is expected ahead of Tuesday's game in Boston, coinciding with the expansion of rosters to 28 for September call-ups. Montes is in transit to Boston but is not necessarily expected to be activated for Monday's series opener at the Red Sox.
Montes has been one of the most powerful sluggers in the minor leagues since arriving in pro ball after training in the Dominican Republic as a teenager. Progressing through the same program that produced Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez, the comparisons for the ****** anic lefty have been common. They're not quite accurate, however. Montes is a huge kid, a 21 year old listed at 6'5, 210 whose frame is as massive as his smile. Like Alvarez, while he moves well for his size, his gait and foot speed are never going to reflect as plus defensively, though Montes has good baseline athleticism that helps him make many 50/50 plays despite middling range. Moreover, his arm is absolutely massive, a profile similar to an early-career Nelson Cruz. Not just that, but Montes is a high-effort player in all phases, occasionally stunning opponents with his pace and hustle.

The reason he's been a top-100 prospect and one of the most anticipated hitting prospects in years for Seattle is gargantuan power that's seen him club 21 homers in 2024 across 542 PA at a teenager, then 32 a season ago between High-A and Double-A, and now 38 big flies in 537 PA across Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma. At every level, Montes has been a variation of highly consistent, slugging massively, walking prominently, and whiffing most of the time he's not doing one of those two options.

Well, they lost the first one. But they're back to try it again! The San Francisco Giants are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second game of a doubleheader, and are hoping to split the four-game series.
It's an exciting pitching situation for the Giants, as right-hander Yunior Marte takes the mound for his MLB debut. Marte — not to be confused with the reliever of the same name, who pitched for San Francisco in 2022 — is a young prospect whom the Giants acquired a year ago in the Mike Yastrzemski trade. He is, shockingly, following in Jonah **** 's footsteps as the second player the Giants have called up directly from AA this year … after going nearly a decade without making such a move.
Marte, who turned 23 earlier this month, has a strong fastball/slider combo, with a splitter as well. He's fastball reliant, and sits mid-90s, while occasionally touching high-90s. He does a good job limiting walks, despite a slightly herky-jerky motion that isn't always conducive to consistent strike-throwing. In 13 starts with AA Richmond this year, Marte posted a 3.92 ERA and a 3.97 FIP, with 72 strikeouts and 22 walks in 64.1 innings. He started the year with High-A Eugene, where he had a 3.74 ERA and a 4.11 FIP in nine games, with 41 strikeouts and 19 walks in 43.1 innings. He was not on the 40-man roster (though he would have been a Rule 5 decision this winter), so the Giants made a spot for him by moving Casey Schmitt to the 60-Day IL. The Giants made **** e on the active roster by optioning lefty Seth Lonsway, who made his MLB debut in the first game of the doubleheader.
For Arizona, it's lefty Mitch Bratt, who is also a 23-year old lefty. Bratt, who was a fifth-round pick in 2021, has made nine appearances in his debut season, and is 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA, a 5.28 FIP, and 28 strikeouts against 25 walks in 39.2 innings. After a pair of great starts to open the month, Bratt has given up three runs in three innings in each of his last two games.

Hudson is a junior volleyball player at Emmanuel Christian. In a recent match against Northeastern on Aug. 22, she had 27 kills and 25 digs in a four-set victory for the Lions.
For her efforts, Hudson was named the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week, presented by Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton, for Aug. 17-23, earning the honor through reader voting at DaytonDailyNews.com.
"I have had people from our school get nominated and I thought it was really cool, and to have myself get nominated for it was just really an honor," Hudson said.

Sometime soon — maybe Friday, maybe Monday, certainly by the middle of next week — the Red Sox stand to welcome back three players who have spent a good chunk of the season on the Injured List: Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Their return will help bolster the Red Sox and improve the team in the final month of the season. But their arrival will come at a cost since it will mean a reduction in playing time — and perhaps even cost one a roster spot.
Before any of that happens, it's worth examining how it was that Nick Sogard, Anthony Seigler and Mickey Gasper came to impact this year's club.
Heading into the 2026 season, the three had combined to account for zero WAR in their major league careers. These were not established players by any stretch; they were considered "up-and-down" guys, players who split time between the upper minors and the majors.
But the injuries that struck Story, Kiner-Falefa and Masataka Yoshida created playing opportunities. As the Red Sox pulled off one of the great in-season comebacks that began in late June, Sogard has been the starting second baseman and both Gasper and Seigler have contributed in big ways off the bench or occasionally, as part of the starting lineup.

One particularly memorable example involved the classic arcade game Donkey Kong. While working on a movie in 2011, Forte became fascinated with the game between scenes and devoted considerable time to improving his score. His dedication eventually became serious enough that he reportedly reached 36th place in the game's competitive rankings at one point. For someone primarily known as an actor and comedian, becoming a highly ranked Donkey Kong player was an appropriately unexpected achievement.
His personal life entered a new chapter after he met businesswoman Olivia Modling at a party in 2018. While preseason results don't matter in regards to the regular season and playoffs, for some on the bottom of the roster fighting for a spot, it's everything.
The Cowboys might not know who's making the team at the end of the depth chart at receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback, or safety. It's rare, but occasionally a great showing in the final preseason game can be the thing that pushes someone onto the 53-man roster over someone else who doesn't have a good showing.
The Cowboys have one of the best defensive tackle combos in the NFL. If Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark aren't the best, they're definitely top tier. Otito Ogbonnia is an impactful veteran run stopper, and then the cupboard looks bare.
Jonathan Bullard should be a good veteran, but he has been out all camp and could be a cut candidate who goes to the practice squad and then is called up once he is completely healthy. In 326 snaps last season, he had a run defense grade of 63.9, average at best.
The other three in the group include 2025 draft pick Jay Toia and undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookies D.J. Withers and Tommy Dunn. Through two preseason games, Toia's run defense grade dropped from 65.9 against the Seattle Seahawks to 23.1 against the Cardinals. Dunn was consistent with a PFF run grade of 66.8 in both contests, and Withers had a run grade of 70.2 in game one and 68.2 in game two.

The names shift, the numbers remain eye-catching, and the wider theme is clear enough, Stamford Bridge is still a place where squad building is constant, aggressive and occasionally uncomfortable. According to The Athletic, the final days of the market could yet reshape Xabi Alonso's first Chelsea squad in meaningful ways.
The broad picture is one of exits before arrivals. Chelsea have stockpiled depth, youth and possibility over recent years, but football teams still require balance, availability and clarity of purpose. In that regard, the club's late-window strategy appears practical. The report states that "the squad is largely set, with a priority being placed on getting several players out, either sold or on loan." That line speaks volumes. Chelsea are not merely browsing the market, they are trying to create order.
There is also the matter of Enzo Fernandez, a player central to Chelsea's midfield identity and central, too, to the market noise surrounding west London. Manchester City remain interested. Chelsea remain resistant, at least on their terms. The old verbal framework has gone and the new conditions are stiffer, both financially and competitively. As The Athletic reports, "the asking price for Fernandez is now higher than the £120million verbal agreement that was in place until the deadline ran out on August 14." That is the key detail. This is not a club inviting offers for a prized **** et. This is a club prepared to listen only if the structure of the deal protects their present and future. Chelsea are expecting an offer from City, and Alonso "did not confirm that Fernandez will still be a Chelsea player at the end of the window". That is the modern manager's balancing act, keep authority, preserve dressing-room equilibrium, and avoid making promises the market may challenge.
If Fernandez stays, Chelsea retain a midfielder of personality, technical **** urance and bite. If he goes, the consequences spread beyond one position. The report makes plain that Chelsea would not necessarily seek "a like-for-like replacement for the Argentina international. It could be a midfielder with a different profile, or a new attacker." That is a revealing football point. Chelsea's recruitment under Alonso appears to be guided by function rather than neat duplication.

Over the last eight months or so, there has been a conversation, mostly quiet but occasionally quite public, about whether the ACC should dump Notre Dame.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have officially confirmed the return of ****** anese international Ko Itakura from Ajax. The 29-year-old centre-back signs a contract through 2030 after spending just one season in Amsterdam. Kicker reports that Gladbach will pay an initial €3.5m, with bonuses potentially taking the deal to €4m. Ajax paid Gladbach a base fee of €10.5m for Itakura only last summer.
Itakura made 80 competitive appearances and scored seven goals during his first three-year spell at Borussia-Park. The versatile defender established himself as a regular in central defense and also occasionally featured in defensive midfield. His single season at Ajax proved less successful. Kicker credits Itakura with 24 competitive appearances and one goal before the ****** anese international opted to return to familiar surroundings.
The timing of the transfer is hardly coincidental. Gladbach moved quickly after Nico Elvedi completed his €10m transfer to Leeds United, leaving an immediate vacancy alongside Kevin Diks in central defense.
GGFN's 2026/27 Borussia Mönchengladbach tactical preview had projected Elvedi and Diks as the first-choice pairing while noting the uncertainty surrounding the Swiss defender's future. Itakura can now step directly into the position vacated by his former defensive partner.
