Sometime soon — maybe Friday, maybe Monday, certainly by the middle of next week — the Red Sox stand to welcome back three players who have spent a good chunk of the season on the Injured List: Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Their return will help bolster the Red Sox and improve the team in the final month of the season. But their arrival will come at a cost since it will mean a reduction in playing time — and perhaps even cost one a roster spot.
Before any of that happens, it's worth examining how it was that Nick Sogard, Anthony Seigler and Mickey Gasper came to impact this year's club.
Heading into the 2026 season, the three had combined to account for zero WAR in their major league careers. These were not established players by any stretch; they were considered "up-and-down" guys, players who split time between the upper minors and the majors.
