Longtime baseball reporter Francys Romero reported Sunday evening that Cuban OF Lazaro Montes will be called up to the Seattle Mariners, with Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reporting that the move is expected ahead of Tuesday's game in Boston, coinciding with the expansion of rosters to 28 for September call-ups. Montes is in transit to Boston but is not necessarily expected to be activated for Monday's series opener at the Red Sox.
Montes has been one of the most powerful sluggers in the minor leagues since arriving in pro ball after training in the Dominican Republic as a teenager. Progressing through the same program that produced Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez, the comparisons for the ****** anic lefty have been common. They're not quite accurate, however. Montes is a huge kid, a 21 year old listed at 6'5, 210 whose frame is as massive as his smile. Like Alvarez, while he moves well for his size, his gait and foot speed are never going to reflect as plus defensively, though Montes has good baseline athleticism that helps him make many 50/50 plays despite middling range. Moreover, his arm is absolutely massive, a profile similar to an early-career Nelson Cruz. Not just that, but Montes is a high-effort player in all phases, occasionally stunning opponents with his pace and hustle.

OpenAI's head of data centers, Chris Malone, has left the company, adding to a string of senior executive departures at the artificial intelligence lab this year.
TechCrunch first reported his departure. Malone, who brought experience from data center roles at Meta and Google, came aboard in March 2025, and his exit arrives amid OpenAI's sweeping infrastructure expansion — one that envisions committing around $600 billion to compute through 2030, per CNBC.
OpenAI said in a statement that the company had "recently reorganized" its "infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work," adding that it has "a strong, deeply experienced data center team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans." Yesterday afternoon was disappointing, but taking three of four from the Red Sox still counts as a statement by a team that's playing surprisingly well since the deadline.
The Yankees will test whether this run can amount to anything. The Jays draw Gerrit Cole today, Cam Schlittler tomorrow, and Ryan Weathers on Sunday. That's about as tough of a pitching series matchup as it gets. But hey, we have Paul Sewald now, so there.
We got little bits of news today. Anthony Santander is apparently hitting off a tee. That's good for him, but I'm operating under the ******* umption that he's effectively medically retired until we get proof otherwise.
As mentioned, Paul Sewald is active tonight. He's posted a really good K:BB ratio this year (44:9 in 39 innings), but 12 home runs have blown up his ERA. Hopefully either luck or a new coaching staff gets him past that issue. Lazaro Estrada goes down for the corresponding move. Due to a new rule this year, because he's been optioned five times now this season he'd have to be DFA'd if he's brought back and sent down again. It's not a big thing, as he hasn't been good this year, but it just adds one more wrinkle to an already complicated Jays pitching situation.

Real Madrid forward Endrick has been appointed as UNICEF’s newest ambassador in Brazil, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old joins a select group of Brazilian public figures who use their platforms to raise awareness about children’s rights and support UNICEF’s initiatives throughout the country. Fellow ambassadors include television presenter Maísa, actor Renato Aragão, singer Daniela Mercury, actor Lázaro Ramos, actor Bruno Gagliasso, and the iconic comic character Mónica.
UNICEF has worked with ambassadors around the world since 1954, selecting artists, athletes, and other influential personalities who are not only widely recognized but also demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving the lives of children and adolescents.
According to UNICEF Brazil representative Joaquín González-Alemán, Endrick’s influence and example make him an ideal choice for the role.

UNICEF has worked with ambassadors around the world since 1954, selecting artists, athletes, and other influential personalities who are not only widely recognized but also demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving the lives of children and adolescents.
According to UNICEF Brazil representative Joaquín González-Alemán, Endrick’s influence and example make him an ideal choice for the role.

Yeah, an Open Thread two days in a row. But I'm going to be gone most of the day.
I rode 80 km yesterday and I feel fine this morning, maybe a little soreness in that foot. I'm going for 50-60 today, and then two days off and the MS Ride. I've raised $3702, so beat my goal. I might give another donation to get to $4000 because I like neat numbers. I'm 21st out of 362 riders for donations. I'm lucky to have friends.
The MS Ride is on the weekend and the weather looks terrible. I'm a fair weather biker, but I'll do this ride as long as the weather is safe. Most years we've had a very nice weekend.

Yesterday Shane Bieber was activated and Lazaro Estrada was optioned to Buffalo. Hayden Juenger was DFAed. I would have liked to see Shane pitch deeper into the game. Would also have liked Joey Loperfido to have stuck out in the 11th inning.
