The nest egg needed to support a comfortable retirement varies widely by state.
Couples receiving dividend income may need a smaller nest egg, but those payments can fluctuate and aren't guaranteed.
Monthly dividends totaling $500 to $2,000 can shrink the required invested nest egg by $150,000 to $600,000.
Building a stream of dividend income is a common retirement strategy, giving couples regular cash flow that can help cover expenses without requiring them to sell as much of their portfolio.
An Investopedia ****** ysis found that a typical American couple age 65 or older needs about $1.16 million saved for a comfortable retirement after accounting for roughly $37,700 a year in Social Security. Across the 50 states and Washington, D.C., that figure ranges from about $800,000 to nearly $1.33 million.

College-town states like Ohio (93) and Tennessee (92) beat Florida's (103) cost-of-living index, cutting a retired couple's required savings by over $205,000.
Pennsylvania exempts 401(k) and IRA withdrawals from its 3.07% flat income tax for qualifying retirees, while Ohio taxes non-Social Security income above $26,050.
Ohio residents 60 and older can audit Ohio State courses tuition-free and access a major academic medical center, though game days and student rents add real trade-offs.

Most people who talk about where to retire end up on the coast. Florida ranked first in net adjusted gross income gained through state-to-state moves in IRS migration data for 2022-2023, at $20.6 billion. The less talked-about option is a town built around a university.

A Michigan retiree couple needs roughly $927,000 invested at a 4% withdrawal rate, versus $1.07 million in Florida.
Florida homeowners pay $8,471 yearly for insurance versus $2,415 in Michigan, a $6,000 gap that requires $151,000 in extra savings.
Michigan exempts Social Security and offers married couples a $128,080 retirement deduction, potentially zeroing state tax on a $37,000 IRA withdrawal.

Retiring to a lake town in Michigan or Wisconsin often raises questions about snow and winter conditions compared with a move to Florida. Winter is one factor in that comparison, but the rest of the picture gets mentioned less often: insurance, taxes, housing, and summers. This piece runs the numbers for a couple at full retirement age.

Megan Rapinoe has never been shy about speaking up for transgender athletes, even as the issue has become one of the most heated debates in sports. And in a recent interview, the United States Women's National Team legend made it clear that her stance hasn't changed.
In a recent podcast, Rapinoe pushed back on the idea that trans women threaten fairness in women's sports, arguing that sports have never been fair in the first place and claiming that fairness shouldn't matter more than people's human rights.
The debate over transgender athletes in women's sports has only intensified over the past couple of years, with Republicans making it a central political issue and many states passing laws that ban trans girls and women from competing in girls' and women's sports.
The issue has spilled into the sports world, too. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham sparked a nationwide conversation this year when she voiced her opposition to trans women competing in women's sports.
Even some Democrats have distanced themselves from the issue. Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, for example, has said that he opposes trans athletes playing in girls' sports "if it endangers safety or fairness."

Dejan Kulusevski has revealed how a "change to my nervous system" enabled him to return with Tottenham after a 17-month injury layoff left him fearing the end of his football career.
The Swedish midfielder was introduced to a rapturous reception in the 87th minute of the club's 3-1 home victory against Coventry last week and followed that up with another substitute appearance in Saturday's win at Chelsea as Spurs continued their improvement after a poor start to the Premier League season.
Kulusevski had multiple setbacks after knee surgery in May 2025. But a second procedure in March finally set him on the road to recovery.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's match against Crystal Palace, the 26-year-old Kulusveski told SpursPlay: "It had been like one year and a couple of months and I still can't walk on the stairs. I can't walk on the stairs like a normal guy. I have to play football so in my head I'm not going to give up, but I have to think that if this doesn't work out, what do I do?
"I went to a physio in Sweden. He was able to change my nervous system and then it felt different. When I did the exercises, I said, 'I don't have pain, like this hurt yesterday. Why is this not hurting today?'

Ta Bi caught the eye from his very first appearance in red and white.
He's a skilful and tricky winger with a turn of speed and seems to be developing very well in the squad. The rawness we saw at the start is going as he improves his all-round game.
On Wednesday, he was very aware of what was going on around him — his head was up and he was looking to hurt the opposition.
He got slightly lucky when beating El Hadji Malick Diouf for the second goal, but if you don't try, nothing happens. Once round the defender, he laid it on a plate for Timur Tutierov and his speed of thought for the third goal was excellent, coupled with a perfect delivery.
I would imagine Régis Le Bris will continue to take it steady with him but must surely recognise that he could be a real thorn in the side for opponents as an impact substitute. He offers a genuine attacking threat and I think in the league, he'll have more chances from the bench.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson acknowledged he "never wanted to go" to the hospital after being injured during his team's Week 8 "Thursday Night Football" win over the Carolina Panthers.
Watson noted that having to leave the stadium via ambulance was difficult during a postgame interview with Amazon Prime Video's sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung.
"It was tough. Honestly, I never wanted to go," Watson said. "I was hoping that they would let me off. I said I was kinda feeling better once I kinda caught my breath. But I mean they said there was a couple of signs that made them have to take me over there."
"It is what it is," he added. "I was just praying that it was good enough to where I could come back out here. Obviously, thankfully it was and I was able to get back out."
Watson was originally injured after catching a 53-yard deep pass from Jordan Love in the second quarter of the game. He landed hard on the ball as he came to the ground and remained down, rolling onto his back before being tended to by Green Bay's training staff.

Kenna Wollard has come forward about the illness that has kept her sidelined this college volleyball season.
The Purdue volleyball all-American revealed via social media on Thursday, Oct. 29 she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in August. Wollard, though, did have some positive news to share about her battle against the blood cancer.
"Today, I found out that the treatments are working and I am on track to remission!!!!" she posted. "These past couple months have been so tough but hearing the news today brought so much joy. I still have some treatments left, but I am very hopeful for what's ahead."
Wollard played in the program's initial 2026 exhibition but hadn't appeared in any of Purdue's matches during her senior season. She was a Big Ten All-Conference first-team selection and second-team All-American in 2025.
Her kills (577) last season were the third-most in program history.

I reached out to the folks at Black Shoe Diaries to talk about this weekend's game between their Nittany Lions and our Purdue Boilermakers. They were kind enough to respond with some informative answers to my questions. Make sure to go check them out.
Penn State has not won a Big Ten game yet this year. The schedule to start the year has turned out to be a lot tougher than most people probably thought going in. Given the turnover at the top, what was expected of Penn State by fans coming into this season?
I predicted a 9-3 season. Some others on our site were at least mentioning the word playoff in the offseason. Personally, I thought Penn State would have enough experience with Matt Campbell's system considering that there would be so much continuity with so many players making the move from Iowa State. A lot of that optimism was tied to the schedule. Unlike 2025 where Penn State jumped right into the deep end with a showdown against Oregon in conference play, this year seemed like it would give some runway for the Lions to work things out before a Whiteout matchup against USC. That seemed to be the plan until halftime of the Wisconsin game. From that 17-0 lead against the Badgers, the Lions have struggled mightily.
Three of the four Big Ten losses have come by 8 or fewer points. Is this a situation where Penn State may be 0-4 but they could very easily be 3-1? I guess the crux of my question is, is Penn State better than their record reflects?
I think it should be at least 1-3. The Wisconsin loss was egregious. Penn State led from the start. They could never quite put away the Badgers, had to settle for field goals, committed a brutal turnover, and then allowed a couple of long conversions in the loss. This team isn't as talented as last year's Penn State team, but there are some similarities. They've had second half leads in three of the four losses, just as last year's Penn State team lost fourth quarter/overtime leads to Oregon, Indiana, Iowa, and Northwestern.

Kim Kardashian is dealing with a health issue that "really hits home."
During the Thursday, October 29, episode of The Kardashians, the 46-year-old reality star revealed that she needs surgery to address "irregularities" in her esophagus following her esophagitis diagnosis.
"So I've seen a couple of doctors, and it's been heavy on my mind lately," Kim said in the confessional, according to People. "I haven't really told too many people about this, just because I think it's something that really hits home for me and I just don't really wanna go there."
Kim's father, Robert Kardashian, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59.
"With my dad having passed away from esophagus cancer, hopefully I can just take medication and this will go away," Kim continued.

Phoebe Dynevor became internationally famous through Bridgerton, and that sudden success also brought increased attention to her personal life. The British actress has experienced everything from relatively private relationships to a highly publicized romance followed by photographers and tabloids. Over time, however, Dynevor has become increasingly careful about separating her career from her relationships. Her romantic history has included actors and figures outside the entertainment spotlight, but her relationship with Cameron Fuller ultimately became the most significant chapter. After beginning their romance in 2023, the couple became engaged and later married.
Before Bridgerton transformed her public profile, Dynevor was linked to several men, including British actor Sean Teale and executive Simon Merrill. These relationships attracted comparatively limited attention, partly because they occurred before she became internationally recognizable as Daphne Bridgerton. The success of the Netflix period drama dramatically changed the amount of interest surrounding her life away from the screen.
That became especially clear in 2021, when Dynevor dated American comedian Pete Davidson. Their relationship generated intense media attention as the pair were photographed together and followed by celebrity publications. Dynevor later reflected on the experience of suddenly having strangers interested in something she considered an ordinary part of being a young woman. The relationship ended after several months, with their demanding schedules and distance widely reported as challenges.
A quieter chapter began when Dynevor was linked to actor and producer Cameron Fuller in 2023. The pair initially kept much of their relationship away from public attention, although they gradually began appearing together at events. Fuller comes from an entertainment industry family and has worked both in front of and behind the camera.
Their relationship reached another milestone in 2024. Dynevor attended the Met Gala wearing a pale pink Victoria Beckham gown and revealed a diamond ring on her left hand, bringing widespread attention to their engagement. Fuller and Dynevor largely continued their low key approach afterward rather than turning their wedding preparations into a constant public storyline.

A source claims that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's visit to Nottingham did not please one royal. The news comes at a time when the Sussexes' relationship with the Firm remains notably strained. That said, the Duke recently discussed his desire to reconcile with his brother, Prince William, and his father, King Charles, in an interview with GQ.
Sources are suggesting that Princess Catherine is apparently "seething" over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's appearance in Nottingham. The outing marked a return to the kind of public engagements typically ****** ociated with royal duties.
As per RadarOnline.com, an insider said, "Catherine's frustration had intensified into her being consumed by fury following the Sussexes' Nottingham engagement, which revived painful memories of the couple's public criticism of the royal family."
They claimed that Catherine had long steered clear of confrontations with Harry and Meghan to respect William's feelings, but she is now becoming less willing to keep her thoughts to herself. The source added, "She is said to be absolutely seething behind closed doors over Harry and Meghan's latest appearances, and the scenes in Nottingham have brought years of frustration bubbling back to the surface."
The source further explained that, from Kate Middleton's perspective, it is deeply upsetting to watch the Sussexes return to Britain and receive considerable attention. The Princess of Wales is reportedly particularly aggrieved to see the pair greeting crowds and visiting local charities. They added that the non-working royals are now doing engagements almost identical to the royal duties they left behind.

Truro City should have got something from their FA Cup loss at National League side Sutton United, according to **** istant manager Stewart Yetton.
The Tinners were unable to make the first round proper for just the second time in their history as they went down 1-0 at Gander Green Lane.
Emmanuel Osadebe's goal after 32 minutes proved the difference between the sides in south London.
"I think we should have got something out of the game," Yetton told BBC Radio Cornwall.
"We had a couple of really good chances, one in the first half from a few yards out and then Luke Jephcott has a really good chance at the end and just goes right into the one place the keeper can save it.

Liverpool are still trying to figure things out under Andoni Iraola.
The first couple of months under the Spaniard have shown promising glimpses of what could be at Anfield, but the side lacks consistency and still looks some way off competing on all fronts.
Several issues still plague the squad, but two of the most prominent have come in the midfield and on the right wing.
The Reds midfield has lacked balance this campaign and has often been the weakest area on the pitch, whilst the right side of the attack is left with no natural option following the departure of Mohamed Salah.
Luckily, there is one man who could fix both problems for Liverpool.

The Los Angeles Lakers may be ready for their regular-season opener on Wednesday once it arrives, but they may not be prepared. They were never whole in their five preseason games, of which they won only two, and that could hurt them in the early days and weeks of the regular season.
New starting center Walker Kessler didn't play in the team's first three preseason games. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves played in only three games apiece, and therefore, Friday's game, which ended with a 121-106 loss to the Denver Nuggets, was the only game in which the three of them shared the court.
Reaves said after that contest that he knows building chemistry together will be a process that won't be easy, but he also expressed confidence that things will get sorted out in time.
"There's gonna be some growing pains," Reaves said. "Just a lack of reps together so far, but you take guys like that, that are that talented, you are more than likely gonna pick up on it sooner than later. We'll continue to grow that over the next couple days and get ready for opening night."
Kessler seemed to take it somewhat easy in his two exhibition appearances, but he looks poised to give Los Angeles the elite rebounding and shot-blocking it lacked last season. He had a total of 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, 15 rebounds, five ***** ists, three blocks and two steals in 47 minutes during those two contests.

Earlier in the season, Angel Reese exclaimed that "Anything that goes up is mine," reflecting her mentality in the paint. Reese is now the WNBA's Defensive Player of the Year. Grabbing 12.1 rebounds per game in the regular season, she is far ahead of any other player in that category, and her gritty style of play has made her a solid anchor for the Atlanta Dream. However, Flau'jae Johnson believes that if Reese can consistently deliver on a less talked-about aspect of her game, she can be nearly unplayable.
"On a defensive point, I wouldn't say nothing. She's just a dog, and when you a dog, things just happen on defense. She's relentless. She was playing like a DB against New York. It's relentless," said Johnson on Sue Bird's podcast, Bird's Eye View.
"But I would say offensively, like that three-point shot. I've seen a couple of highlights on Instagram where Jonquel's like Let her shoot. She's knocking them down. And I think that's the difference. If she could consistently do that, like you got to play them straight up and that opens up the lane. So I think like that's like the evolution of like her game. But defense isn't really worried about that."
Johnson is reflecting on the moment when, during the third game of the series, Reese found herself alone at the perimeter, with Liberty player Jonquel Jones leaving her unguarded, and Reese knocking down the three comfortably.
Flau'jae's candid take on Angel Reese's game reveals what scouts are really watching for. Subscribe to stay ahead of the WNBA's most compelling storylines.

"After the first three goals, it was a bit like, 'Wow, are we that good and they are that bad?'" said City head coach Andree Jeglertz after his side's 3-2 victory. "Of course that's not the reality. If you drop a couple of percentages in this league, teams are good enough to punish you. Brighton is this type."

I'm living proof of the saying that "kids keep you young." My wife and I don't need social media. We've got multiple social barometers living in our house. But my usual reaction to every new trend or slang that enters their lexicon ("cooked" and "tuff" have been the new favorites) is skepticism. Before I try to figure out how much attention I need to put into what has them hyped, I try to figure out how serious they are about their enthusiasm.
Sunday's fantasy football action left me in a similar spot. We didn't get many massive box score performances from our stars. Instead, Week 6 was about our mid- and late-round picks or waiver-wire acquisitions. And with some giving us repeat results, the storylines coming out of Sunday should have us adjusting how we approach fantasy free agency on Tuesday.
Both Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Stroud were hooping all morning. They were the perfect pivot from whatever we had to watch on TNF. But as I was watching the Texans offense, a couple of things stood out.
what a throw from Stroud, too. pic.twitter.com/fz4EbOAKvT https://t.co/2MaTqWpPgd
First, Stroud's command of the offense was at an all-time high. Jacksonville came into the game with the 12th-highest pressure rate. Houston had a twofold response. It used an extra lineman on 35.6% of its plays (a season-high), and Stroud was getting rid of the football in 2.31 seconds (a season-low). The result was not only his lowest pressure rate (8.6%) but also his highest EPA per dropback (0.35). More importantly, the Jaguars' defensive measures, which included blitzing Stroud on 31.4% of his dropbacks, didn't stop him from throwing the ball.

Hey gang! It's your ol' pal Jay. I woke up in a cold sweat after a nightmare about a failed audition from like 20 years ago, so I decided to spread that anxiety 'round the world! See, back in them days, you couldn't just send a self-tape all willy nilly. You had to physically bike on down to some building in a shady part of town, wipe the sweat from your brow, and perform for a little panel of directors and producers.
I don't want to brag, but I got a callback for a Taco Bell commercial. The director asked me to deliver this one line in different ways but still convey that this imaginary burrito was yummy. After a few runs of not getting it right, he seemed to be getting a little perturbed. I rifled off a couple more nervous ones until he stopped me and said, "No. You have to pretend that you're thoroughly enjoying the food. You know… Like an actor."
The room went silent as I shrunk to microscopic proportions. I didn't get the part obviously, but I had a good run back then! Booked some commercials for KFC, Pepsi, Nabob Coffee, and Tetley Tea, so… Ya. I haven't acted in a long time, but don't worry. I still take harsh criticisms on an almost daily basis! If you love cringey audition stories like that, just wait till you see these ones from A-listers. Cringey stuff here, folks. Enjoy.
