Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has come under scrutiny following the demoralising 1-0 Premier League defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, 13 September. The Red Devils played for more than an hour with a man advantage following Phil Foden's red card, but failed to penetrate the opposition backline.
The defeat leaves United in 13th place in the league table after four games, in which they have picked up just one win and conceded seven goals. It was the second time that Carrick's team have failed to score this season, after the opening day 2-0 defeat to Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
The Red Devils secured an impressive 4-0 win over Sabah last week in the Champions League, but that optimism evaporated over the weekend. While the season is still in its nascent stages, the situation is bound to raise questions about Carrick's position.

The Dallas Cowboys will have another running back on the active roster to go along with Javonte Williams, Emari Demercado, and Hunter Luepke. They have signed Israel Abanikanda from the practice squad as a counter move to Malik Davis going on injured reserve with a hip injury. Sources indicate it could be season-ending.
Cowboys placed RB Malik Davis on injured reserve and signed RB Israel Abanikanda to their active roster from their practice squad.
Abanikanda first came to the Cowboys last November after spending time with the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and the Green Bay Packers. In January, he signed to a reserve/future contract before getting waived in August during final roster cuts. However, he was signed to the practice squad the next day.
This gives the Cowboys another option at running back that is fully up to speed on the offense and should be able to contribute if asked. He hasn't had much production with just 70 rushing yards and 43 receiving yards, but team will not ask much of him right away as Demercado should pick up much of the work.

Mike Vrabel is not second-guessing how he prepared the New England Patriots for their season opener. The Patriots rested their starters throughout the preseason, creating questions about whether the lack of live game action contributed to Wednesday night's 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Vrabel firmly rejected that suggestion Thursday.
"Playing the backups for the Eagles or the Colts, I don't think was going to prepare us for what we saw last night," Vrabel said, according to NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry.

New Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover started 6-for-6 passing for 98 yards and two touchdowns in his first start with the Hoosiers, but it took some blood and sweat — literally.
In the second quarter of Indiana's season opener against North Texas on Saturday, Sept. 5, a Mean Green defender brought some pressure to Hoover in the pocket but grabbed Hoover's facemask and turned his helmet completely backward in an obvious penalty. The defender was flagged for the play, which caused a open wound to Hoover's face, which he played with the remainder of the drive.
Blood continued to drip down Hoover's face and onto his chinstrap midway through the second quarter, but the first-year TCU transfer led the Hoosiers on a touchdown drive anyway, ending in a 9-yard touchdown pass to returning starter Charlie Becker to extend their lead to 21-3.
It's quite a first impression for a quarterback aiming to fill the shoes of Fernando Mendoza, who went No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft and won the Heisman Trophy before scoring a gutty touchdown himself in the national championship.
Hoover, a three-year starter at TCU, entered the game with 9,629 career passing yards and 79 total touchdowns to 33 interceptions. His first touchdown as a Hoosier was a beautiful back-shoulder pass to Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh, who caught the pass one-handed for what was also his first score.

A plaque of the Coventry City Football Club crest is back in the team's home city, after a shadowy tale involving Manchester City supporters, a tie clip, a Norwegian pub and a 22-year absence.
It all started when Manchester City lost 4-3 at Highfield Road in 2001 and four visiting supporters swiped the emblem from a restaurant and took it north with them.
But not for long, because three years later, it somehow surfaced in an expat bar in Norway, where Coventry fan Steve Walker saved it from being thrown out.
Now, two decades after the Mancunians "liberated" the plaque from Coventry - and a journey of more than 1,200 miles - the sign is back in its home city.

SAN DIEGO -- For a few minutes, it looked like Hirving Lozano's return to Snapdragon Stadium might turn into the kind of night the LA Galaxy had been waiting for.
Lozano had spent nearly 10 months away from competitive action, and San Diego made sure he knew exactly how it felt to come back.
He was booed the first time he touched the ball and was fouled repeatedly as the match grew more physical. Then, after San Diego went down a man early in the second half, Lozano finally found his moment.
A loose ball bounced around the penalty area before falling to Lozano, who made no mistake from close range. He celebrated in front of the Galaxy supporters who had made the trip, embracing the moment in a stadium where his return carried plenty of weight.
For the Galaxy, though, the goal was part of a much larger night that slipped away in a 3-1 loss to San Diego FC on Saturday.

The adoption of a new college eligibility system — an age-based, five-year model designed to eliminate waivers, redshirts and roster logjams created by a surge of athletes in their mid-20s sticking in school — has been furiously challenged in the courts by members of the 2022 high school class who want a fifth year of eligibility, too.
The new eligibility system, which is replacing one that allowed four seasons of competition over five years with no age restrictions, excludes student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year.
That bucket is filled with athletes who first enrolled in 2022, following high school graduation. As of an Aug. 21 report from Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, more than 150 athletes had filed a total of 18 lawsuits across 15 states. Wins against the NCAA in state courts have allowed athletes to return to college, including football players who were in NFL camps this offseason.
The phenomenon has bewildered NFL coaches, and, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the league is clarifying its eligibility rules on Wednesday.
Here's what Schefter outlined in his report: If a player signed to an NFL contract is cut, they are a free agent, meaning they can sign with another NFL team, a CFL team or return to college. But even if a player cut by an NFL team returns to college this year, they won't be subject to a future NFL Draft because they will still be considered a free agent. Plus, any player who goes back to college this year won't be able to sign with an NFL team this season.

One doesn't have to look too hard on social media to find someone using the word "washed" in the same sentence as Klay Thompson's name.
Which is exactly why the four-time champion and future Hall of Famer wanted to join the Heat, Thompson said at his introductory press conference, via the ****** ociated Press.
"It's kind of a redemption season for me to show I can still make an impact on winning and do it consistently," Thompson said. "I can't wait to get to work. It's pretty surreal being here. But what an honor it is....
"I've tasted winning before and there's really nothing like it. The opportunity to win again at a very high level was so attractive to me."
Thompson put his money where his mouth was about winning, giving up more than $9 million of his $17.5 million contract to facilitate a buyout in Dallas. She also has enough personality, and heart, to fill a baseball stadium.
"Am I dreaming?!" she asked a reporter last week while at Isotopes Park working with Isotopes players.
Maddie and her classmates from the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy — the fightin' Honey Badgers, of course — spent last Friday helping the Albuquerque Isotopes get things right for the upcoming Sept. 4 American Sign Language Night game at Rio Grande Credit Union Field.

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has been moved from the restricted list to the 10-day injured list following a puzzling absence that saw him miss Monday night's game in Boston.
The decision came after Marte met with general manager Mike Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo to address the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, which neither party disclosed.
Lovullo explained Marte returned to Phoenix to undergo medical tests on his knee earlier this week. However, Lovullo expressed frustration that Marte did not communicate his whereabouts or status during this period, leaving the coaching staff and teammates unable to reach him.

Former Georgia Bulldogs star pass rusher Mykel Williams is recovering from an ACL injury entering his second year in the NFL. Williams is not expected to be ready to return to game action in time for Week 1.
The San Francisco 49ers drafted Williams with the No. 11 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, but he suffered a torn ACL midway through his rookie season. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says that Williams is "progressing well", but is a "longshot" to play in Week 1.
Williams posted 20 tackles and one sack in his rookie season with the 49ers. San Francisco needs him to be healthy and is hoping to get more production out of Williams in Year 2. San Francisco suffered an enormous amount of injuries on defense last season, but was still able to make the playoffs. The wheels fell off for the 49ers in a Divisional Round loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
San Francisco needs to have a healthier 2026 season. San Francisco plays in the NFC West, which is arguably the toughest divisions in the NFL, and does not have a ton of margin of error.
Williams has been named as a player that is under pressure to perform this year. The 49ers are hoping Williams will take the next step and boost their pass rush.

Real Madrid have officially announced the presentation of José Mourinho as the new head coach of the first team. Although the Portuguese manager had already spent several weeks overseeing training sessions with the squad, the formal event took place at Real Madrid City.
The event was held in a private setting within the Valdebebas facilities. The club's president, Florentino Pérez, acted as host to welcome the tactician back to the Real Madrid dugout.
During the event, the Portuguese coach signed the contract that will tie him to the Madrid institution for the next three seasons. In this way, the agreement between both parties is set to run until 30 June 2029.
As tradition dictates in this type of event, Mourinho received several institutional gifts from the president. These included a scale replica of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, a commemorative watch and a personalised shirt bearing his name.
The ceremony also featured a highly significant institutional presence. José Martínez 'Pirri', Real Madrid's honorary president, was present at the signing to accompany the new coach at the start of this new chapter at the club.

I still feel pretty confident in the Browns' defense for the regular season. We've heard about the piling up of injuries in the secondary, though, throughout camp. When the preseason game happened, the depth after the first couple of units was pretty bad in some aspects. It makes sense, as many of the guys playing defensive back were just signed recently. Half of the names were ones that even I did not recognize, and that never happens in a training camp for me.
Cleveland was also the only team to give up more than 30+ points in the first full week of the preseason. Not that that matters much, but still.

After two years of flirting, does the College Football Playoff court Illinois football in 2026?
Some may call this a best-case scenario; some may call it a pipe dream. But call it highly possible! Given the history of the CFP, 10 wins is the line of demarcation. In the past couple of years of the 12-team CFP, only one team had fewer than 10 wins. That was Duke last year, the ACC champ with only 9 wins. So I feel fairly safe in saying they are an outlier. In last year's CFP, there were only three teams with 10 wins. The Illini are projected as a middle of the pack lower top half of the league team. Do the Illini have 10 wins on the schedule?
With the non-conference schedule, Illinois should be 3-0 when they travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. I am not discounting UAB, Duke and Southern Illinois, but all three games are in Champaign; Duke will be the stiffest opponent, 9-5 in the ACC last season and losers to Illinois 45-19 in Durham.
The Big Ten schedule is actually favorable to Illinois. They don't play Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State, or USC. They do catch top-tier Ohio State on the road and host Oregon. They also host AP preseason top 25 pick Iowa. On the road, they face Michigan St, Maryland, UCLA and Northwestern, along with home games vs. Purdue and Nebraska.
You might ask how that is favorable? Ohio State and Oregon are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the AP preseason poll; Iowa is 20. The rest of the schedule is either highly winnable games or Illinois should be favored to win.

The barber of former Barcelona star João Cancelo on Sunday dropped a major hint regarding the Portuguese's future at club level. This of course comes amid ongoing speculation linking the defender with a move back to Catalunya's capital.
Full-back Cancelo for his part spent the 2nd half of last season plying his trade on loan in the colours of Barcelona. The 32-year-old went on to impress under the orders of Hansi Flick, establishing himself as an important contributor from left-back.
