Seattle Seahawks star defensive tackle Leonard Williams is entering the final year of his current contract, but the two-time Pro Bowler isn't letting ongoing extension talks distract him from preparing for the 2026 season.
Williams confirmed Tuesday that his representatives and the Seahawks have had preliminary discussions about a new deal, though nothing has been finalized.
"There's been a few conversations, but nothing set in stone," Williams said.
The 32-year-old veteran is in the final season of the three-year, $64.5 million contract he signed in March 2024, just months after Seattle acquired him from the New York Giants during the 2023 season. Under the Seahawks' long-standing policy, players are not eligible for contract extensions until they have one year remaining on their current deal, making Williams eligible for negotiations this offseason.

It took 11 days for the public to learn Kyle Shanahan had been involved in a car accident on July 14. But since the announcement Saturday, it hasn't taken long for more details to come out about the scary collision that will limit the San Francisco 49ers head coach for the start of training camp.
Specifically, more has been revealed about the injuries Shanahan suffered after ESPN already reported he broke his nose, three ribs and his hand, suffered a severe concussion and required more than 40 stitches.
On Monday, PFT Live's Chris Simms said Shanahan's wife sent him pictures of the gory injuries his friend suffered, and they showed Shanahan nearly lost his eye.
"When you first see it and it's fresh and some of the cuts are still wide open, it's jarring. It's jarring. He was this close to maybe losing his right eye. The scar is so big right here," Simms said, pointing at his eye.
Those aren't the only new details to trickle out.

Carlisle United have signed Fleetwood Town defender Toby Mullarkey on loan until January.
The defender played 27 games for the Lancashire club in League Two last season, having joined from Crawley Town where he worked under Carlisle's new head coach Rob Elliot.
Mullarkey, 30, is the sixth player signed by the Blues this summer as they prepare for a second National League season.
"To join a team that's expected to be up there and winning is something I'm looking forward to," he told Carlisle's website.

We are deep into the offseason for the Ohio State basketball team, but the incoming freshmen have joined the fray and are going through workouts with all of the other pieces that have returned or were a part of the transfer portal haul. One of those freshmen is guard Alex Smith, a local product just a few miles from campus in Upper Arlington.
Many know about five-star freshman Anthony Thompson, but Smith is a bit of an unknown to most casual OSU fans, so the Ohio State Hoops X account decided to share a short video for you to get to know the 6-foot, 9-inch, power forward with a deft shooting touch.
"Alex showed up on campus ready to work. The one thing I know about Alex is his shooting will translate from Day 1," Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler said ... "I love the fact that Alex is from close by. He's a Buckeye fan. Has been his entire life, and this program means something to him, and you can't have too much of that in your locker room."

Hundreds of people gathered Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church for the funeral of Houston Texans co-founder Janice McNair.
"She was exceptional," said Cal McNair, Janice's son and the current CEO and chair of the Texans.
McNair died July 14 of natural causes. She was 89.
Throughout the service, McNair's graciousness, her ability to make others feel seen and her impact on the lives of others were common threads speakers touched upon during the service.

When the NBA's calendar turned over on June 30, one of the first things the league made a point to do was announce the selection of Hinkle Fieldhouse as the first host of the NBA Cup Final outside of Las Vegas.
The IndyStar contacted the NBA to get a better sense of the process by which the league arrived at the decision to choose Hinkle. The league responded by e-mail with answers to the Star's question's from NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Global Events Kelly Flatow.

As we pass the midway point of the 2020s, it's worth looking back at which players made the biggest impact on the NFL over the past five season.
The Los Angeles Rams were one of three teams to have at least three players listed on Fox Sports' "Half-Decade Team," with Davante Adams, Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald all earning spots on the star-studded roster. Los Angeles tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the second-most representatives of any franchise, behind only the Baltimore Ravens' four. And if you're wondering where Matthew Stafford is, Fox Sports only picked one quarterback, and it was hard to leave Patrick Mahomes off this list.
But the Rams' total comes with an asterisk the Chiefs and Ravens don't share: two of the three honorees have spent a combined one season in Los Angeles so far. Adams arrived via trade in 2025 and just completed his first year with the team. Garrett only just joined this offseason after being dealt from Cleveland in a blockbuster move, and has yet to play a single snap in a Rams uniform. Only Donald's Rams tenure predates the recent roster overhaul — and he's been retired the past two seasons.

Omar Speights is not the first name that fans think of when they think of Rams training camp opening this week. He's not one of the first 10 names, or probably the first 20. But if camp is for competition, then Speights is the face of one of the most intense battles expected to happen for a starting job on L.A.'s depth chart in the next two months.
Will Speights fend off two linebackers coming for his job?
During his rookie season, Speights made his instincts and high football IQ clear after playing a handful of snaps against the Seahawks:
"They motioned a little bit before, so I just kind of knew wherever that motion ended up going, that was where the run was gonna go," Speights said. "So I ended up just being a cut back, so I just checked my gap first and then flew over the top just looking for an open gap to hit and I found it, and (the defensive line) did a great job up front of getting penetration… so it was easy for me to just clean up."
"Playing ball for a long time, you get a feel for certain things," Speights said.

David Blough was an undrafted rookie third-string quarterback for the Detroit Lions in 2019, when he first met Matthew Stafford. These days, Blough is entering his third year of coaching and his first as the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Stafford is about to enter his 18th NFL season and is coming off his first MVP award.
Back to 2019. It was Week 5, and Blough's wife, Melissa, an accomplished hurdler, was in Qatar for the World Athletics Championships. So, during Detroit's bye week, Stafford did something special for Blough and his wife, despite having known him for only about a month. After signing as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns, Blough was traded to Detroit on Aug. 30, just before the season.
Washington's new offensive coordinator joined Ari Meirov's podcast Tuesday and shared the story.
"My wife was running internationally," Blough said via Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire. "In 2019, she was running at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. And I hadn't seen her since she went on the international circuit. Our bye week was after Week 4, and I had known Matthew for a whole month. That's it. Just one month. … And he basically says to me – her season was over, she had finished in the quarterfinals – and he says, 'How come she can't fly home? How come she can't come home for the bye week? You need to see her. It's a long season.' She wasn't able to fly back yet and he called me on the Tuesday of our bye week, knowing we had Thursday through Sunday off, and he calls me and says, 'Hey, can she get on a flight tomorrow night from Doha to Chicago? You can pick her up there. I'll pay for it. I'll fly your wife home for you. I had known him for a month, and he is doing this for me."
That's a great story. You don't often hear a lot about Stafford, which is by design. But not only did the star quarterback show tremendous leadership, but he also took it upon himself to do something extremely kind for a new, young teammate.

The long road to the major leagues − even for the participants in this year's All-Star Game − always seems to begin with a couple of friends, an open field and a game of catch.
The joy of learning the game as a kid was celebrated at this year's Midsummer Classic following the end of the fourth inning with a nod to the classic baseball movie, "The Sandlot."
As several All-Stars took the field, they were joined by a group of kids on bicycles to represent the special part baseball plays in American history.

When Stewart Cink thinks back to when things started to click for him on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, he thinks back to Michigan. It was August 2024, and he was playing the Ally Challenge in Grand Blanc for the first time since turning 50. It was his first time playing Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club since the old Buick Open days.
Cink decided before the 2024 Ally that he was going to make the PGA Tour Champions tour his full-time tour.
He went out that week and won his first Champions tournament. He's won seven Champions tournaments since, including the Ally Challenge again last year. Next month, Cink will go for the three-peat.
"The golf course is fun to play. You know what you're going to get every year," Cink said Tuesday during Ally media day, speaking to Michigan reporters virtually while preparing to play this week's British Open at Royal Birkdale in England. "We know how to play it. It's just a question about how you execute.
"And I think that's one of the reasons players love playing at Warwick Hills. There's no tricks.

Jordan Spieth has admitted that it has been unusual to return to Royal Birkdale and see some of the changes from when he won The Open Championship in Southport back in 2017.
Few would have ever imagined that Spieth would head back to Birkdale still awaiting his fourth major victory. But unfortunately, the last few years have not been particularly kind to the Texan on the course.
It is more than four years since his most recent PGA Tour victory of any kind.
Perhaps more worryingly, Jordan Spieth has not finished a major inside the top 10 since The Masters in 2023.
He will hope that returning to the scene of one of his greatest triumphs will inspire Spieth to roll back the years over the coming days.

This weekend, nearly a dozen Texas A&M players were selected in the 2026 MLB Draft, including former Maryland transfer infielder Chris Hacopian, who was selected 11th overall by the Washington Nationals, and veteran RHP Weston Moss, who will join his teammate in Washington after the Nationals selected him in the 11th round.
The Aggies' top three hitters this season, Hacopian, Caden Sorrell, and Gavin Grahovac, were all picked in the first three rounds, with Sorrell going 62nd overall to the Chicago Cubs, while Grahovac, who missed all but one game during the 2025 season, looks like an absolute steal for the Los Angeles Angels, who selected him 81st overall in the top of the third round on Saturday.
Last season, Grahovac started all 57 games, slashing .339/.429/.722 with 22 home runs and 74 RBI, and led the Aggies with 78 hits and 26 multi-hit performances, which included 20 multi-RBI games. Compared to his freshman season, the California native looked more confident at the dish, as his .754 slugging percentage ranked first in the SEC.
Heading home to start out in the minor leagues, Grahovac's potential is through the roof. In full agreement with the D1Baseball staff, the versatile infielder's drop to the third round was one of several surprising outcomes but should not hinder his development, especially given his improvement in 2026.
"Even the much lessened swing and miss of Texas A&M’s Gavin Grahovac couldn’t elevate his value beyond No. 81 overall. As much as his pick was a surprise fall, it was a steal as far as we’re concerned. The Aggies’ slugger lowered his strikeout rate from 23.1% to 16.5% while raising his ISO. This dual improvement is rarely accomplished, especially in a major conference."

The MLB Home Run Derby is undergoing its biggest transformation in a decade.
The latest tinkering for the MLB event, which will take place at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park, will be oriented around swings, not seconds. This year, baseball is completely eliminating the clock. Hitters will get 20 swings in Round 1, 15 swings in Round 2, and 15 in the final round. If a player homers on their last swing in any round, they get to keep going until they don't homer. There are no brackets in the opening round, and there is no bonus round.
The 2026 field includes some familiar faces to the derby, including 2018 winner and Bryce Harper of the host team Phillies and 2025 runner-up Junior Caminero of the Rays. Other participants include Ben Rice of the Yankees, Jac Caglianone of the Royals, Willson Contreras of the Red Sox and Jordan Walker of the Cardinals.

Those hoping hoping to see the Sox splash the cash on some hard-to-sign candidates on day 2 of the MLB Draft were immediately disappointed, as the Red Sox spent their fifth round pick on Lucas Davenport, a pitcher out of Baylor University who was unranked by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline heading into the draft.
Davenport is a beastly 6-6, 230 lbs. and his pick launched a mini-run on those big college pitchers Craig Breslow likes so much: sixth rounder Brett Lanman, a 6-5, 23o lbs. lefty out of Abilene Christian, eighth rounder Josh Volmerding, a 6-4, 210 lbs. lefty out of California Polytech, thirteenth rounder Mason Lei, a 6-4, 215 lbs. righty out of the University of Illinois-Chicago, and fifteenth rounder Chase Frey, a 6-6 225 lbs. lefty out of Grand Canyon University.
The highlights of Day 2 are the two higher-ranked high schoolers the Sox nabbed back-to-back in the ninth and tenth rounds. Ninth rounder Martin Shelar, an outfielder, comes out of the baseball powerhouse that is the Marist School in Georgia. He has massive power potential, is committed to Mississippi State, and was ranked as the 65th-best prospect overall by FanGraphs, 125th by Baseball America, and 175th by MLB Pipeline.
Tenth rounder Kaleb LaFavor out of Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa is a towering 6-7 righty with a ton of extension who can already hit 95 MPH on the gun. He was ranked the 171st-best prospect by ESPN evaluator Kiley McDaniel, 465th by Baseball America, and is committed to the University of Iowa. Craig Breslow's got bonus pool money burning a hole in his pocket, and it's going to go to these guys in hopes of enticing them away from college (speaking as someone who spent a fair bit of time partying in Iowa City as a 22-year-old, good luck in LeFavor's case).

Max Holloway beat Conor McGregor in an anticlimactic UFC 329 main event Saturday that ended in the first round after McGregor hurt his leg in the opening seconds of the fight.
The show outside the octagon failed to deliver too, as UFC president Dana White called out his production team for misidentifying one of the celebrities he paid to attend the fight. Something he said happens frequently.
On Saturday, his disappointment came from UFC confusing boxing champion Shakur Stevenson for Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams. Thankfully, White had a broadcaster who was able to call out the mistake in real time.
"I just paid Shakur Stevenson a s---load of money, and for some reason we can't figure this celebrity s--- out," White said in an NSFW rant after the event.
With the WNBA's Sophie Cunningham also making an appearance as a UFC ring girl, celebrities were a clear part of the attraction Saturday night. But the team didn't execute the plan, because apparently all Black people look alike.

Following tonight's UFC 329: McGregor vs. Holloway 2 fights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the winners will answer questions from the media during the post-fight press conference.

Left-handed pitcher Mason Edwards was projected to end that drought for the Trojans during the 2026 MLB Draft. However, Edwards ultimately fell just short of the first-round.

An event in Philadelphia focused on preserving the legacy of the Negro Leagues through education, storytelling, and community engagement.
The Action Cam was at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia in Center City for the ceremony on Friday.
Phillies legend, Ryan Howard, spoke about the importance of honoring baseball's African American history, and ensuring those stories are preserved for future generations.
Howard also presented a $20,000 check in support of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which is in Kansas City, Missouri.
Howard says he used to visit the museum every year before training camp, as a pre-season ritual, to pay homage to those who came before him.

Two of the keys for Cleveland's near and long-term future are how both of their first-round picks perform in their rookie seasons. Both Spencer Fano and KC Concepcion are under a lot of pressure to show that they have what it takes to be long-term pieces in this league.
It is going to be a challenge for both of them, as the Browns offense is very young throughout and will also have a major question mark at the quarterback position. With all of the aside, the Browns have had a very rough go at it with their first-round picks in the last 20 years.
We are examining the careers of the last 10 to see which ones were worth the selection and which ones were a bust. Spoiler alert, it's heavily weighted to the latter.
Cleveland went with the defensive line to start the 2015 draft and took one of the biggest busts of that first round. Shelton had potential but never grew into it. It is always a risk going DL in the first round because if the result isn't a home run, it is likely a failure.
DL and OL were within just a few picks away from each other with the intent of bolstering their lines of scrimmage, it didn't work. Erving spent only two seasons in Cleveland before being traded to Kansas City in 2017.

As the 2026 World Cup enters its final handful of matches, ticket prices have been dropping considerably over the past week.
According to TicketData.com, which tracks prices across a number of third-party resellers, prices for all seven remaining matches (three quarterfinals, two semifinals, the third-place match and final) had dropped anywhere from 25% to 70% over the past week as of Friday, July 10.
That drop is fueled in part by the elimination of all three host countries in the round of 16.

Kylian Mbappé missed a penalty but made up for it with a brilliant goal to help France beat Morocco 2-0 on Thursday and secure a spot in the World Cup semi-finals.
France were awarded a penalty in the first half after Noussair Mazraoui brought Mbappé down inside the box. But French fans were stunned when the Real Madrid star was denied by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Mbappé, however, made up for the poor spot-kick with a goal in the 60th to finally break the deadlock with a stunning effort from the edge of the box.
Ousmane Dembélé doubled France's lead just six minutes later as Bounou's touch couldn't stop the ball from falling into the net.
In the semi-finals, they will face the winner of Friday's clash between Spain and Belgium. France are bidding to win a third World Cup **** le.

A soccer-crazed Argentine couple encountered an unexpected roadblock 12 years ago when they tried to name their firstborn son after their country's most celebrated player.
They discovered that the name they had chosen in honor of Lionel Messi violated an obscure 1969 Argentina statute prohibiting the use of surnames as first names.
Messi David Varela won the right to keep his distinctive first name after his parents petitioned for and received an exemption from the civil registry office in the Río Negro province. Hector Varela and his wife, Lorena Sanchez, preferred "Messi" as a first name for their newborn son because there were already so many Lionels and Leos named after the beloved No. 10 on the Argentine national team.
"This was more of a statement," Hector Varela said during a September 2014 interview with a popular Argentine radio show.
There are many ways Argentines can celebrate Lionel Messi's age-defying goal-scoring performance at this summer's World Cup. The peerless 39-year-old has already piled up a tournament-best eight goals, one more than Norway's Erling Haaland and France's Kylian Mbappé. FC Barcelona did not execute Marcus Rashford's purchase clause, and the player has already returned to Manchester United. Now, a new report makes it clear, the English club expects that he will start the season as a Red Devil, barring an unforeseen twist.
The 28-year-old joined Barcelona on loan last season, and though the management was generally happy with his performances, his salary was a stumbling block. Even though his transfer fee was not too high, Barça preferred to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead. Even though Gordon's fee was higher, his salary was preferable to the Catalan club.
What's ironic is neither Rashford nor United seem thrilled with each other. It's understood the Manchester club would be willing to part with him for the right price, but so far, no club has taken the deal. Rashford himself made overtures towards Barcelona, showing he wanted to stay, but ultimately, Barcelona would not agree to keep him at a salary Rashford was comfortable with.
Despite this, United are not interested in another loan. Thus, unless positions soften or another club comes calling, Rashford will be reporting for duty with his current club after the FIFA World Cup ends.
He will have three weeks off after England finish their campaign. United are due to start their pre-season campaign on Thursday.
