After months of withholding support and weeks of back and forth with lawmakers, the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference on Friday publicly backed a bipartisan Senate bill designed to stabilize college athlete compensation and provide antitrust protections to the NCAA and its most powerful conferences.
The final major sticking point for the conferences with the Protect College Sports Act was language in a provision regarding name, image and likeness deals athletes can strike with companies that work directly with schools. The conferences wanted more well-defined restrictions on deals between athletes and so-called ***** ociated entities to cut off the workarounds some schools have been using to blow past the current annual revenue-sharing limit of $20.5 million they can direct to athletes.
With the Big Ten and SEC now on board, the bill has a chance of getting to the Senate floor next week for a vote. Still, there is no guarantee Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) will be able to squeeze it in before Aug. 7, when the Senate breaks for a five-week recess.
The bill needs 60 votes to pass, and where that count stands in the Senate is unclear. Lawmakers are hoping for robust support that easily passes the threshold, believing that gives the bill a better chance of then passing a House vote in the fall. Reforming college sports has been a priority for President Donald Trump, and the White House has also pushed for Congress to act.
The bipartisan bill was introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). It addresses a wide range of issues in college sports, including antitrust exemptions that would allow the NCAA and member conferences to make rules about athlete eligibility, transfers and NIL compensation, while shielding them from an onslaught of legal challenges.

Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is discussing a financing backstop that could change who bears the risk of OpenAI's next infrastructure expansion. The Wall Street Journal reported on July 26 that Nvidia was in talks to guarantee roughly $250 billion of financing for a proposed 10-gigawatt data center campus in southern Ohio, with OpenAI as a prospective tenant. Reuters said the project, being developed by SoftBank's SB Energy, could cost more than $500 billion including hardware. Nvidia was also reportedly discussing separate financing of as much as $350 billion for chips at the site.
These are negotiations, not completed commitments. Nvidia's connection runs through two specific financing channels. A guarantee could let lenders underwrite the OpenAI lease against Nvidia's stronger credit, while separate chip financing could fund purchases of Nvidia's own accelerators. Both could accelerate product deployment, but the guarantee would also expose Nvidia to customer-credit and project-execution risk. That proposed combination explains why investors worried that some future chip demand may depend on the supplier helping customers finance it.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is linked through OpenAI's cloud spending, not through general AI-sector exposure. If OpenAI directly leases and controls the Ohio campus instead of buying the equivalent compute through Azure, Microsoft could avoid some capital burden but miss the related cloud-infrastructure revenue and control over workload placement. It does not, however, establish that OpenAI is leaving Microsoft.
The companies' April 27 amended agreement says Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner and OpenAI products will ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot and chooses not to support the required capabilities. OpenAI can serve products across other cloud providers, while Microsoft retains a non-exclusive license to OpenAI models and products through 2032 and remains a major shareholder. An October 2025 agreement also included an incremental $250 billion commitment by OpenAI to buy Azure services. The Ohio proposal therefore represents infrastructure diversification at the margin, not a clean break.

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP)'s Big Boy 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, has been touring the country this summer, and grown adults keep tearing up when they see it. CEO Jim Vena said the tour east of the Mississippi wouldn't have been possible without one thing: the railroad operating firm's pending merger with Norfolk Southern, since Union Pacific's own tracks run west of the river. In part, the nostalgia tour is a goodwill campaign for the biggest deal in the company's history.
On the business itself, Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) reported a strong quarter. Revenue rose 12% to $6.86 billion, beating the $6.71 billion expected, and adjusted earnings came in at $3.41 a share versus $3.24 expected. The company raised its full-year guidance to high-single-digit earnings growth, up from mid-single digits. The stock rose about 2% in premarket trading. Costs rose too; operating expenses climbed 13% to $4.1 billion, mostly from a 63% jump in fuel costs linked to the Iran war.
Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) is trying to buy Norfolk Southern in a deal now valued around $71.5 billion, down from an earlier $85 billion price tag as terms have moved with Union Pacific's stock. It would create the first coast-to-coast U.S. railroad. The day before earnings, Union Pacific settled with Canadian National Railway, a major opponent that had been pushing regulators to demand more information. CN will drop its opposition in exchange for expanded Midwest access and a stake in two jointly owned terminal railroads. Vena called it proof the firm is "ready to move forward in the regulatory process." The deal still isn't approved, though. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) paused its review in May and just this week ordered Union Pacific to make employee-impact data public. Rivals BNSF and Canadian Pacific Kansas City are still lobbying against it, and some shippers and state attorneys general remain opposed. The companies still expect to close the deal in the first half of 2027.
That raises a real question. Is this merger clearing its last real hurdles, or did the CN settlement just remove one opponent out of several?
The core business (Union Pacific's actual railroad operations) is performing well on its own, guidance beat and rose, and pricing power held up despite surging fuel costs. The CN settlement removes a credible opponent and comes with political tailwinds too: Trump has publicly backed the merger and replaced a regulator who could have opposed it. Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) and Norfolk Southern say the deal would save shippers $3.5 billion a year and remove 2.1 million trucks from the road. Wall Street responded fast: Baird, RBC, and JPMorgan all raised price targets this week, with RBC citing the CN deal directly as strengthening the merger's case.

The football cleats were in the grass as Florida A&M began its 2026 preseason training camp practice on Friday, July 31.
It marked the first for new head coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr., a former Rattler Hall of Fame quarterback hired last December from Albany State. He has 14 camp practices to evaluate his inaugural FAMU football team with the season kickoff less than a month away on Aug. 29, hosting NCAA Division II's Albany State.
The Orange and Green started training camp with 87 players, per the Southwestern Athletic Conference's media guide. They look to rebound from a 5-7 season in 2025, prior to Gray's hire.
And camp will be a major part of making that a reality.

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have not been shy about their efforts to add starting pitching in the lead-up to the trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET Monday. The Sox are casting a wide net in their search for playoff-caliber rotation reinforcements, with the hope of getting back to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
The White Sox have been scouring the market in recent days, and sources tell Yahoo Sports that Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber and Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers are two names on Chicago's radar. Bieber is a familiar face to the White Sox, as he faced them for seven seasons while a member of the Cleveland Guardians. This year, the Blue Jays' right-hander is 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA in seven starts.
Rogers, who is 6-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 20 starts this season, has come on strong over the past month and a half. The Orioles' southpaw has a 1.85 ERA with 41 strikeouts across his past seven starts. Both Bieber and Rogers will become free agents at the end of the 2026 season.
Chicago, like other upstart contenders around the sport, would love to add controllable starting pitching to their roster if they can. But the Sox also aren't afraid to go the rental route, depending on what the market presents over the next few days. Yahoo Sports reported on Monday that the White Sox were showing interest in starting pitchers who fit the window of the team's young core, with Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers high on their list.
Chicago has also continued to show interest in New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes. The Sox were one of several teams who had representatives at Holmes' rehab start on Tuesday. The Mets' right-hander, who has a player option for 2027, can become a free agent at the end of this season.

I broke down the 2027 scouting classes in my early summer scouting series, and the room has a ton of potential with a long list of potential standout players. I broke down the offense and defense in articles and I suggest reading those for a broad aspect of the room. The Raiders do have some talent on the interior OL, and I'd expect Las Vegas to add more in 2027 as John Spytek does.
These rankings are extremely early, and they will evolve over not only the summer but the next 8-10 months throughout the season, and into draft season. Some lists will feature 10, 15, 20, or more ranked prospects but I'll include others on the list below to note.
Colin Simmons, Texas – 6'3/245, Jr
Simmons is twitched up, and he'll have a race to be the first EDGE off the board with Dylan Stewart. He's posted a career 29.5 TFL and 21 sacks in two seasons and he's extremely athletic, strong, and shows a ton of pass rush moves. Simmons converts his speed to power, uses his full body, and plays with extreme violence. While slightly undersized, Simmons does have elite length, he is extremely quick off the ball, and moves exceptionally well when working laterally. Simmons has the ability to anchor vs the run, shows great lower body flexibility, and his biggest goal in 2026 is to continue developing and stay healthy. Simmons reminds me a lot of Jared Verse, and should be a perennial Pro Bowler in the NFL.

Julian Menser, who had never seen the Pfau Course at Indiana University before this week, can certainly see where the teeth of the notoriously difficult layout would come out. It's just that, playing in Golfweek's Hoosier Amateur on July 28-30, he didn't experience it that way – and that made all the difference.
"I knew it was hard, everyone said it was hard, but when you're playing good, even hard golf courses sometimes don't feel that difficult," said Menser, who is about to enter his junior year at Michigan State. "But the second you start hitting it offline, courses get really difficult. I hit it pretty well. I was hitting it off the center of the face off the tee too, so I didn't really see much of the trouble, which made it feel a little easier, but it's out there. I hit a couple wayward shots and all of a sudden, you're staring double in the face."
At the end of a final round in which four different players held the lead at some point in the day, Menser, of South Lyon, Michigan, walked away with the Hoosier Amateur **** le by a one-shot margin. Rounds of 68-70-69 left him at 6 under for the week, and a birdie on the 17th hole in the final round was key in moving him to the top of the leaderboard, ahead of Grand Canyon junior Benjamin Keil, who bogeyed the 17th. Silas Haarer, a sophomore at Liberty University, finished third at 3 under.
Key in Menser's victory also was a lack of bogeys. He only made three all week. Menser correctly realized that the Pfau would not give up many birdies – he had nine of those in 54 holes – so steadiness would be key. Menser is typically not a player who pours in a ton of birdies anyway, he acknowledged.
"It's just not really my style," he said. "I knew if I would stay steady, don't miss it short side, just make a bunch of pars, I'd probably end up in good shape."

Tennessee State football practice is under way with a battle for the starting quarterback position between returning starter Byron McNair and two transfers − Daylin Lee from Winston-Salem State and Marcelis Tate from South Florida.
Second-year coach Reggie Barlow said no one is ahead of the others as the Tigers prepare for their season opener on Aug. 29 against Jackson State in the John Merritt Classic at Vanderbilt.
All three quarterbacks worked with the first unit at practice on July 31. Barlow said he hasn't ruled out giving freshman Justin Patton from McCalla, Alabama, a shot at the job if none of the older players take the reins.
"Daylin's experience speaks for itself; he had a real good command (at Winston-Salem State)," Barlow said. "Tate, for a young guy, he looks like an older guy, but he's only played one year. He's a good player. And, of course, we've got Byron, and then there's Justin (Patton), a freshman who's a good football player. He was here in the spring as an early enrollee."
It is a similar situation to what Barlow faced at TSU last year when three quarterbacks were locked in a battle for the starting ******* ignment among Jonathan Palmer, Caleb McCreary and McNair. Palmer earned the starting position at the start of the season before McNair unseated him in the third game. Palmer returned as the starter later in the season.

The Mets and White Sox reportedly discussed a trade that would send Freddy Peralta to the South Side of Chicago. Michael Marino reports that White Sox prospects George Wolkow and Boston Smith were among the players discussed in the return. Marino also stated that the talks have stalled a bit, and the Mets are in discussions with other clubs as well.
Peralta, who came to the Mets in the offseason along with Tobias Myers from the Brewers in exchange for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, is in his age 30 season and has been a major disappointment for the Mets in his 22 starts with the club. He's set to start tonight in what is essentially a showcase, hoping to goose his trade value a bit in what is his likely final last Mets start.
Peralta is the owner of a 4.99 ERA and a 83 ERA+ over 113.2 innings. He's at the highest walk rate and lowest strikout rate since he's been a starter full time, but also has the highest BABIP against of his career, so luck may be a piece of his poor performance.
The two prospects mentioned in the report are both consensus top 2o prospects for the White Sox, with Woklov as the 15th best in their system by our sister site South Side Sox in their pre-season rankings. Smith didn't join the organization until a trade with the Nationals in late March, so he isn't ranked by South Side Sox, but the catching prospect was listed as their Minor League Player of the Month for July.

Jul. 31—ROCHESTER — With two years remaining in her high school volleyball career, Laney Stellmaker has already decided on her next chapter.
The incoming junior setter for Century High School verbally committed to play Division I volleyball for Southern Illinois University Salukis in Carbondale, Ill, she recently announced on social media.
Once her recruitment opened on June 15, college coaches started reaching out to her. The first week was a whirlwind with Stellmaker averaging four phone calls per day. Her longest call, though, was with SIU.
"It was an hour long, and on the call, I could kind of feel that connection with the coaches," Stellmaker said. "And then I went to camps, obviously. And then after Southern Illinois' camp, I was talking to my dad, and I was like, 'This feels right. I think I want to go here,' and I already had an offer from them. I got it a week earlier, and so the next morning after camp, we made the decision to commit there."
All she needed was three and a half weeks to make her decision. Her campus visit sealed the deal.

The NFC South has become one of the NFL's most competitive divisions in recent years, but Bleacher Report isn't convinced it's one of the league's best.
In a preseason ranking of every NFL division, Kristopher Knox placed the NFC South eighth, making it the lowest-ranked division heading into the 2026 campaign. The ranking factored in last season's results, offseason additions and departures, and each team's placement in Bleacher Report's latest power rankings.
Knox acknowledged that every team in the division has reasons for optimism. He pointed to Atlanta's additions of head coach Kevin Stefanski and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, New Orleans continuing to build around young quarterback Tyler Shough, and the Buccaneers addressing their pass rush by signing Al-Quadin Muhammad and drafting Rueben Bain Jr.
Tampa Bay also found itself on the list of the division's biggest offseason losses. Knox highlighted the departures of longtime franchise cornerstones Lavonte David, who retired, and Mike Evans, who left in free agency, as significant changes for a team looking to reclaim the NFC South crown after its four-year run at the top of the division came to an end.
Despite ranking the NFC South last overall, Knox doesn't believe the race will lack intrigue. He noted that Carolina, Atlanta, Tampa Bay and New Orleans all have a realistic path to contention if their quarterback situations develop as hoped. He also pointed out that the Buccaneers looked like one of the NFL's hottest teams before injuries derailed their season, leaving them with an opportunity to win the division until the final week of the year.

Tony Romo, the former NFL quarterback and top CBS television ******* yst, has reportedly been placed "on leave" by CBS following his OWI arrest after a golf tournament in Milwaukee.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news July 31, eight days after Romo was pulled over and taken into custody by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of operating his vehicle while intoxicated. Full videos of the arrest and subsequent field-sobriety tests have been released.
Schefter also wrote that, for now, another Wisconsin high school alumnus will take Romo's place in the lead booth – Pewaukee High School and University of Wisconsin legend J.J. Watt.
Romo received a citation for refusal to take a test for intoxication and failing the field sobriety test. In Wisconsin, a first-offense OWI is a traffic violation and typically carries a fine.
Romo was pulled over on Interstate 43 just south of the Marquette Interchange after participating in the Wisconsin Amateur golf tournament in West Bend during the weekend.

After working on the practice fields at their Baptist Health Training Complex on Wednesday and Thursday, the Miami Dolphins were back out their Friday morning for their final training camp session of the week.
Miami will be off on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday, with fans in attendance. However, before we get there, let's talk about everything that happened at Day 3 of Dolphins training camp, according to the beat writers on the scene.
The Dolphins had perfect attendance on Friday again, as their only absences were wide receiver Chris Bell (NFI) and cornerbacks Darrell Baker Jr. (PUP) and Storm Duck (PUP), per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's David Furones.
After the offense struggled on Day 2, they bounced back a bit on Friday. Multiple reporters noted that rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas made multiple impressive plays, including a one-handed grab for a touchdown. That may be very important, especially with Tutu Atwell's hands popping up as an issue on Thursday.

Tony Romo has been placed on leave by CBS Sports "until further notice" following his July 23 arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Romo, 46, was stopped going southbound on I-43 and "performed poorly on SFSTs (standard field sobriety tests)," according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office's arrest report.

The month of July is in it's final day, and the start of the Kentucky football season is just 36 days away. As we count down the days until game one against Youngstown State, we're also getting to know the players on the roster. Today, we're taking a look at No. 36, Andrew Weber.
Weber is a 6'0", 175 lb defensive back out of Cincinnati, Ohio. On the football field, he starred for St. Xavier at safety, receiver, and as a punt returner. He also baseball and basketball where he excelled as well. He wasn't heavily recruited, but he did have offers from South Carolina and Army. He chose to head to Lexington, though.
As a freshman, Weber proved to be a star in the classroom as well as a terrific athlete. He made the Dean's list and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He was on the Dean's list once again last season while continuing to practice and staying ready with the football team.
Heading into the 2026 season, Weber will be a junior after sticking around through the coaching change. He will be a depth piece in the secondary who may not see a lot of playing time, but will practice with the team and provide value in other ways.

The Miami Marlins and Telemundo have announced a local deal that will see the Marlins broadcast games over-the-air in Spanish for the first time.
The agreement will see two Marlins games air in Spanish on WSCV (Channel 51) in Miami: Sunday, Aug. 9, vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 1:40 p.m. ET and the regular-season finale on Sunday, Sept. 27, vs. the Atlanta Braves at 3:10 p.m. ET.
Unlike most Spanish-language broadcasts, the Marlins games on Telemundo will feature a dedicated broadcast team. Jose Francisco Rivera will handle play-by-play, with Daniel Álvarez-Montes providing color commentary.
"Baseball is deeply rooted in the Spanish-speaking community, and that is especially true here in South Florida," said Caroline O'Connor, Miami Marlins President of Business. SOUTH BEND —Brian Jean-Mary minces no words when it comes to what he wants to see out of his Notre Dame football linebackers.
That includes fourth-year man Jaiden Ausberry, who trailed only team captain Drayk Bowen with 437 total defensive snaps among Irish linebackers in 2025, but whose 17.2% missed-tackle rate led the group.
"He knows as much as we do the things that he has to get better at," Jean-Mary said of Ausberry during the spring. "He's got all the experience and is super, super talented. You know the athleticism is there. With him, it's just taking his game to the next level as a blitzer and making more plays on the ball in coverage."
With Bowen and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa held out during the spring as they recovered from hip and ACL surgeries, respectively, Ausberry and fifth-year man Jaylen Sneed enjoyed the lion's share of snaps as they built a working relationship with the well-traveled Jean-Mary.
"He's kind of taken the mantle as the vocal leader in the room playing predominantly at the middle linebacker spot, which is new for him," Jean-Mary said of Ausberry. "But I think he's embraced it and loved the challenge. He knows that's just going to make him better once the fall comes around and we're a little bit healthier."

Southend United have signed midfielder Rico Richards from Port Vale for an undisclosed fee on a two-year contract, with a club option of a third year.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Walsall where he made just one start in League Two.
Richards was previously part of the Stockport County squad which won promotion to League One in 2023-24, making 11 league appearances.
"I watched [Kieron Dyer - Southend United head coach] in games while I was growing up, and he's very experienced on the pitch, so I'm sure he can teach me a few things," Richards told the Shrimpers' website.

The head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Liam Coen, has aimed a subtle dig towards Caleb Williams.
Williams is preparing for his third season in the league, but he has caught a stray from the second-year head coach in the AFC South.
Both the Jaguars and the Chicago Bears made it to the playoffs last season, but it was Chicago that made it further in the post-season.
The 2025 season marked considerable progression for both teams, but an unexpected dig has been aimed at Williams by the Jags head coach.
Ironically, the two teams play each other in Chicago in December, with Williams potentially making note of the Week 12 game after Coen's comments.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes newly-appointed Test coach Stephen Fleming should have taken charge immediately instead of delaying his arrival until England's tour of South Africa later this year.

Fleming was named England's new Test coach after Brendon McCullum was removed from the role earlier this month, though the New Zealander has retained his position as the team's white-ball coach. However, Fleming will not oversee England during the upcoming three-Test home series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19 at Headingley.

Questioning the decision, Vaughan said England would miss an opportunity to help Fleming settle into the role before bigger ***** ignments such as the Ashes.

"Stephen Fleming is a good appointment as England's Test coach, but he should be in position for the start of the Pakistan series, rather than taking over fully for the South Africa tour in December," Vaughan wrote in the Telegraph.

"It is about the small details, gaining experience of going to grounds such as Edgbaston – which hosts an Ashes Test – getting to know people involved in English cricket and fact-finding about our game by meeting the county coaches who can help him. These are the one-per-cent details England let slip during the Brendon McCullum years but are required to win major trophies."

Vaughan also suggested that England agreeing to Fleming's preferred timeline reflected a shift in the appeal of the coaching role.

"It also suggests the England job has lost a little of its allure because he does not feel he must start immediately. It also shows a little bit of desperation that England were willing to appoint a candidate on his terms, rather than their own," he added.

Fleming arrives in England after an extraordinary stint with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. During his 17-year ***** ociation with the franchise, he guided the team to five IPL ***** les and two Champions League trophies alongside captain MS Dhoni before stepping down earlier this month.

Vaughan, however, warned that the former New Zealand skipper would be walking into a very different environment, pointing out that England captain Joe Root does not offer the same dynamic that Dhoni did at Chennai.

"Fleming is very well respected, renowned for being a very good manager and tactician. I've seen him at the IPL, and one of the problems he might discover in English cricket is that we do not have an MS Dhoni to be his captain.

"Dhoni ran the ship at Chennai Super Kings, and Fleming had some really good backroom coaches as well. Eric Simons was a wonderful bowling coach for him, a master at getting the white ball to swing. His team was built around skill with the ball, not express pace. I wonder whether that is an indication that the skill side of bowling will come back into the England Test team rather than just out-and-out speed," Vaughan wrote.

The 2026 Little League Softball World Series opens Sunday, Aug. 2, with four games of bracket play to begin the road to determine who will be crowned champion on Aug. 9.
The tournament features 12 regional championship teams split evenly into two double-elimination brackets: the purple bracket and the orange bracket.
Starting at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, Northwest Region champion Snohomish, Washington will play Southeast Region champ Lake Mary, Florida. Games follow between Toms River, New Jersey (Mid-Atlantic) and Kinki Softball Little League (Japan, Asia-Pacific Region) at 1 p.m.; Live Oak (California) Little League (West) and Daviess County (Kentucky) Little League (Central) at 4 p.m.; and OnField Little League (Repentigny, Quebec, Canada) and Johnston County Little League (Clayton, North Carolina) of the North Carolina Region at 7 p.m.
There are eight teams from the United States competing for a championship, as well as teams from Latin America (Guayama, Puerto Rico, Softball Little League and Emilia Romagna Little League (Bologna, Italy) of the Europe and Africa Region. U.S. teams from the Southwest Region (Greater Helotes Little League from Texas) and New England Region Bristol Girls Softball Little League (Bristol, Connecticut) are scheduled to play Monday, Aug. 3.
