The 2026 World Series could be set Monday night, with the Rays on the brink of advancing as they host Game 6 against the Guardians.
Tampa Bay's 3-1 win Sunday put Cleveland on the brink, needing a pair of wins at Tropicana Field to return to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2016. The Rays are trying to reach the World Series for the third time, but their most recent trip came in the COVID-shortened 2020 season when all the games were played in Arlington, Texas, so their fans mostly missed out that time.
The Rays got a brilliant pitching performance from Drew Rasmussen in Game 5 and will look for more of the same Monday with veteran Freddy Peralta on the mound. The trade-deadline acquisition started Game 2 of this series and was dominant, holding the Guardians to four hits in six scoreless innings of a 3-1 Tampa Bay win. He also pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief Saturday in Game 4.
Cleveland's pitching situation is unclear but it will be all hands on deck for Stephen Vogt as the Guardians hope their offense can get going the way it did to turn around the Division Series against the White Sox. Can they stay alive, or will the top-seeded Rays move on?

As we have seen the past two years, a 12-team playoff is forgiving when it comes to early season losses. An early stumble does not have to result in panic as the expanded field allows for a mulligan or two – or three.
The above serves as ample reason as to why fans in Columbus and Eugene should turn the page and look ahead at what's next. While we are at it, what to make of a couple of other Big Ten teams after two weeks?
While Arch Manning rallied the Longhorns from a 23-3 deficit after three quarters to stun Ohio State and replace the Buckeyes atop the polls, Ryan Day's team is not about to disappear from the playoff conversation. There is much sting for sure in blowing a 20-point lead, but the larger picture is one that must be in focus because everything remains on the table.
Besides, fans in Columbus, perhaps more than any fan base in the country, know what it is like to have their team rebound following a most disappointing setback. See the 2024 loss against "The Team Up North" and what happened after that.
Those same fans likely desired to see their team keep its foot on the Longhorns' throat instead of letting up. Facing a fourth-and-four from the UT 39-yard line on the first series of the second half and with a 20-3 lead, Day elected to punt instead of attempting to keep the drive alive. The decision was made despite the outstanding first halves enjoyed by QB Julian Sayin (12-for-16, 192 yards) and receiver Jeremiah Smith (6-110). It is easy to Monday morning quarterback, though it is also easy to see the Buckeyes managed less 100 yards on only 22 plays the remainder of the game.

The last two weeks have been a bit of a mixed bag for the Brewers, but Milwaukee remains atop the majors entering a weekend series against the Reds.

OXFORD — Ole Miss football is ranked No. 11 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which was released Sept. 8.
It's one spot lower than the preseason poll. The Rebels were No. 10 in the initial rankings.
Ole Miss (1-0) is coming off a 41-38 win on the road at Louisville on Sept. 6. The Rebels won on a game-winning 48-yard field goal from kicker Lucas Carneiro. Coach Pete Golding said the Rebels have plenty of things to clean up.
Ole Miss will host Charlotte (0-1) in Week 2 on Sept. 12 (6:45 p.m., ESPN2). Charlotte lost 43-41 to The Citadel in Week 1 in a game that went to three overtimes.

A controversial replay call late in the first quarter quickly became a major talking point in No. 4 Notre Dame's matchup against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, sparking criticism from fans and ***** ysts, including former Wisconsin star J.J. Watt.
The game was tied 3-3 late in the first quarter when Wisconsin kicker Porath sent a kickoff toward Harrison Bortolotti.
The returner appeared to have a chance at securing the ball, but it sailed through his hands, bounced several times, and eventually landed in the arms of Notre Dame's Kahanu Kia.
Kia recovered the ball at the Wisconsin 13-yard line, but officials initiated a replay review to determine whether he had established possession before going out of bounds.
After reviewing the play, officials upheld the ruling on the field and gave Notre Dame possession deep inside Wisconsin territory.
