Alex Bowman's surprise retirement announcement caught much of the NASCAR world off guard Thursday, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver says the decision wasn't driven by the reason many fans ***** umed.
Speaking Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one day after announcing he will retire from full-time Cup Series competition following the 2027 season, Bowman explained that his future plans are centered less on what he's leaving behind and more on the life he wants to build once he's steps away from racing.
Despite battling concussions, a broken back and, more recently, a bout of vertigo earlier this season, Bowman said his health wasn't the deciding factor.
Instead, after nearly two decades chasing a racing career, he's ready for something different.
Bowman acknowledged the physical toll racing has taken but made it clear he still believes he can compete at NASCAR's highest level.

It was a rollercoaster of a day for Atlanta Braves fans and Ronald Acuna Jr fantasy owners yesterday. First, news dropped that Acuna's return was imminent and he'd be back with the Braves at some point between tonight and Sunday. However, we all got a scare last night when, in perhaps his final rehab game with the Gwinnett Stripers, Acuna struck out and limped back to the dugout.
While the video was posted with essentially no explanation, it naturally led to rampant speculation. However, there were some key takeaways that social media appeared to ignore in favor of untethered panic as social media does. He is currently rehabbing a left hamstring injury, which had sidelined him; however, this was clearly a right leg injury and looked like an ankle injury. So, it was clear this was not a reinjury for anyone who put any thought into it.
This morning we got an update from Braves beat writer Mark Bowman that Acuna is fine and this should have no impact on a potential return. That's incredible news for Acuna owners. We should expect him back at the top of the Braves lineup as early as tonight and no later than Sunday. His activation off the IL now looks to be imminent.
Acuna was irreplaceable in fantasy lineups and is among the best in the game when he's clicking on all cylinders. He has a rare combination of power and speed, matched by very few players ever, let alone in the league today.
However, it may be a good idea to temper expectations when it comes to base stealing out of the gates as he comes off a second hamstring injury. We have seen him be hesitant before coming off injuries, and that could be the case again here. Nevertheless, we would expect him to be at full speed well before your fantasy baseball playoffs. It shouldn't take him more than a few weeks to get his full confidence back.

Bowman, who had been in the final year of his contract at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports, signed a one-year extension before announcing his future plans on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Bowman missed four races earlier this season because of vertigo and also was sidelined in 2022 because of a concussion and the following year because of a back injury. He drives the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick and currently sits 29th in points, well below the 16-driver cutline for the postseason.
"I've spent a lot of time thinking about what's next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time," Bowman said. "The sport asks a lot of you, and I've learned it's important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself."

Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday, July 23, that Bowman has signed a one-year extension to continue driving the No. 48 Chevrolet but will retire from full-time racing after the 2027 season.
The 33-year-old Bowman has been a full-time driver in the top-level Cup Series since 2014, but has just one victory in the last four seasons and missed four races earlier this year because of vertigo. He also missed three races in 2023 because of a fractured vertebra and five races in 2022 after suffering a concussion.
"Alex has meant so much to our organization for a long time," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He's overcome adversity, won big races and represented our team and partners with professionalism, personality and class. Alex is a tremendous talent in the race car and an even better person outside of it. We're proud he'll have the opportunity to finish his full-time career with us on his terms. He's family."
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Bowman has eight victories across 371 Cup Series races and holds the record for most consecutive starts on the front row of the Daytona 500 with six. He won the pole at the Super Bowl of stockcar racing three times in his career.

But Nike taking its EYBL operations to Sin City brought even more of the basketball world together. That included several top Illinois targets (and a key 2027 commit). Here's a look at how a few of them fared:
Cayden Daughtry & NaVorro Bowman Jr.
Fresh off helping lead Team USA to gold at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul, this Class of 2027 guard duo kept proving how talented they are among their peers. Daughtry and Bowman are the top two scorers in the EYBL. The former averaged 32.7 points, six rebounds, 3.7 ****** ists and 2.3 steals during his run in Las Vegas. While Daughtry wasn't super efficient, knocking down just 18 percent of his three-pointers for the Florida Rebels, Bowman picked up the slack in that department. The Team Why Not guard averaged 21.8 points on 46 percent shooting overall and a 44 percent hit rate from three-point range to go with 4.8 ****** ists and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Illinois' first commit in the Class of 2027 is also in the top 10 in the EYBL in scoring and did so at a high rate and with high efficiency in Las Vegas. The former East Peoria standout, who will play his senior season at Monarch Academy (Kan.), put up 21 points per game on 53/47/81 shooting last weekend for Meanstreets while also hauling in four rebounds per game. That kind of effort and production on the offensive end of the court has helped Kitt rise in the 2027 rankings.

It wouldn't be a day ending in "y" without a Braves roster move:
Hurston Waldrep's ongoing recovery has had quite a few twists and turns. Following a pseudo-breakout late last year, after the Braves were out of it and had little to play for other than trying to garner the kind of major league development that Waldrep largely showed (a 68 ERA-, 79 FIP-, and 89 xFIP- in 56 1/3 innings, good for 1.2 fWAR), the right-hander hit the shelf with recovery from an elbow cleanup, and made just a handful of rehab-ish outings in the minors before the Braves promoted him.
His first outing of 2026 was rough with a 3/4 K/BB ratio in two innings of relief, but he and the defense somehow kept the runs off the board. Waldrep then had his first start back, which had a fine enough 4/1 K/BB ratio in five innings… except that it involved a hit-by-pitch and a three-run homer, putting the Braves in a 3-0 hole early. And then, there was his disaster in Pittsburgh, where he hung multiple breaking pitches to Ryan O'Hearn in a blowout loss.
So, the Braves will welcome back Tyler Kinley from his time actively playing papa and go with a somewhat bulkier bullpen for a while.
Mark Bowman reports that the Braves plan to have JR Ritchie start on Sunday. Ritchie's rookie season is not going particularly well (108/130/116) and he's been used as a multi-inning-ish reliever fill-in so far in July, but he'll get another shot to improve this weekend. Personally, I'm not really sure that "Waldrep being really bad on balance after three outings" is markedly worse for the team's immediate-term outlook than "Ritchie being sub-replacement on balance after ten outings," but my hope is that the Braves can go Johnny Wholestaff in that game anyway and not have to worry about which of their young arms potentially implodes either way.

The NASCAR O'Reilly Series competed at Chicagoland Speedway, and it was a thrilling event. On the Fourth of July, NASCAR was forced to delay the start of the event due to the weather. Connor Zilisch won Stage 1, while Chase Elliott won Stage 2; however, neither driver was able to enter victory lane.

If you will allow me to put my armchair meteorologist hat on, I read an article somewhere about how this heat dome that's been causing temperatures to skyrocket in recent days has been collapsing since Thursday. As such, that's been causing enough of a disruption in the atmosphere to where thunderstorms are even more likely to pop up than usual.
So with that being said, it's not particularly surprising that the weather is a bit spotty over Truist Park in Cobb County and as of right now, the tarp is reportedly on the field and has been since around noon.

After nine seasons with Hendrick Motorsports, the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet is entering the final year of his current contract while enduring one of the toughest stretches of his NASCAR Cup Series career. With Silly Season beginning to heat up, speculation surrounding Bowman’s future has only intensified.
But despite the outside noise, Bowman says he isn’t approaching every weekend as though his job depends on it.

Three women’s hockey players — Chloe Primerano, Abbey Murphy and Caitlin Kraemer — are participating in the Edmonton Oilers’ development camp this week.
In recent years, women such as Marie-Philip Poulin and Kendall Coyne Schofield have been on the ice during NHL teams’ development camps as guest coaches — Poulin with the Montreal Canadiens, Coyne Schofield with the Chicago Blackhawks. But in this case, this trio of players will be full participants.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman had the idea to invite elite women’s hockey players to camp after watching the Milan Olympic women’s hockey tournament as an ****** istant general manager with the U.S. men’s team.
“They were putting on a show for everybody,” Bowman told The Athletic. “It was really high-level hockey on display and I was so impressed by it, that’s when it came to me — we should take some of these players and try to bring them to camp.”
Bowman contacted Murphy, Primerano and Kraemer in May asking if they’d like to attend the week-long camp, which began on Monday. Kraemer told reporters in Edmonton on Tuesday she thought the text from Bowman was spam. Primerano also had difficulty believing the invitation.

People of all ages took to the courts at Gallagher Way to play tennis as a part of a free community event on Sunday.
It was a family affair for 10-year-old Mara Bowman and her cousins as they took to the court.
"It's a really fun sport, and you can really achieve your goals," Bowman said.
It is the fourth year of the Wimbledon in Chicago event.
"We live nearby, because we love tennis because we have small kids to entertain, and because it's a beautiful day at Wrigley Field," said event-goer Monir Hachem.

Trackhouse Racing has been struggling during the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisberegen should be locks to return in 2027; however, there are rumors flying about Connor Zilisch. Will Zilisch stay at Trakchouse Racing or potentially move to Hendrick Motorsports to replace Alex Bowman?
Motorsports Wire predicts that Zilisch will stay in the No. 88 car for Trakchousee Racing in 2027. All three drivers will earn another season with the organization, hoping for better results. Despite Zilisch returning to Trakchouse Racing, it wouldn't be a shock to see him drive the No. 48 car for Hendrick Motorsports in 2028.
Van Gisbergen and Chastain are fighting for a spot in the 16-driver Chase, but the former needs to continue his good run on oval tracks. Motorsports Wire predicts that Zilisch will stay in the No. 88 car for Trakchousee Racing in 2027. All three drivers will earn another season with the organization, hoping for better results. Despite Zilisch returning to Trakchouse Racing, it wouldn't be a shock to see him drive the No. 48 car for Hendrick Motorsports in 2028.
Van Gisbergen and Chastain are fighting for a spot in the 16-driver Chase, but the former needs to continue his good run on oval tracks. Meanwhile, Zilisch hopes to find some consistency after a very unlucky rookie season. There have been a lot of struggles at Trackhouse Racing, but Zilisch is the only question mark.

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve said on Wednesday that 32 of the nation's largest banks are well-positioned to weather a severe economic downturn and continue lending, as firms could absorb over $700 billion in hypothetical losses and remain above minimum capital requirements.
The results of the central bank's annual "stress test" found large banks' capital levels fell by 1.6 percentage points but remained above the minimum requirements, even after weathering a hypothetical global recession in which real estate prices drop by one-third, unemployment spikes to 10%, and financial markets are in turmoil.
"Today's results underscore the strength of the banking system," said Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman in a statement.
Several banks said after the stress-test results they were raising their dividends.
