Bank accounts are important financial tools that help protect your money and even allow you to earn interest. But depending on where you bank — and how you use your account — certain fees can chip away at your balance. From monthly maintenance charges to overdraft penalties, these costs can add up quickly if you're not paying attention.
Understanding the most common bank fees, why financial institutions charge them, and how to avoid them can help you keep more of your money.
Fees serve as added revenue for banks. If a bank charges a fee for account maintenance or an optional service, the institution can put those funds toward operational expenses and even generate additional income — at the customer's expense. After all, a bank is a business, and a business's goal is to earn money.
Recent data shows that banks have become increasingly dependent on fees over the years, especially those charged for overdrafts and non-sufficient funds (NSF). In fact, according to the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB), NSF and overdraft fees account for about two-thirds of a typical bank's fee-based revenue.

Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) announced on September 7 that Warwickshire Pension Fund had appointed it to provide global custody, valuation reporting, capital call execution and performance measurement. The UK public pension fund has approximately £3.6 billion, or $4.8 billion, in ****** ets.
The appointment strengthens the pension-servicing franchise of Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS). Contract duration and fees were not disclosed in the announcement. The investment question is whether the relationship can generate meaningful recurring revenue and support further wins.
Scale sets the hurdle. Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) reported $20.0 trillion of ****** ets under custody or administration at June 30. Warwickshire's ****** ets equal approximately 0.024% of that base. The pension ****** ets represent a servicing opportunity, with revenue depending on the services provided and contractual pricing.
Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) won responsibility for several connected functions. Combining custody, valuation reporting, and performance measurement could make the relationship more embedded in the fund's operations. Capital call execution also provides a role in supporting private-market investments.
Warwickshire is one of 18 partner funds in Border to Coast Pensions Partnership. For Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS), successful delivery could provide a reference for additional pension mandates. The opportunity lies in repeating the service model across clients and expanding relationships as operational needs evolve.

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The Trump administration has proposed eliminating a 60-day grace period that allows certain immigrants, including skilled workers on H-1B visas, to stay in the United States and find a new sponsor after losing their job, according to a government notice posted online on Thursday.
Under the planned rule change, published in the Federal Register by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, those with H-1B and certain other temporary work visas would have to leave the country as soon as their employment ends — a potential blow to top American tech companies that rely heavily on foreign workers.
It is the latest step by U.S. President Donald Trump to limit legal immigration since returning to office in January 2025. His administration has also introduced higher visa fees for skilled workers and recently paused immigrant visa appointments at U.S. missions globally while it implements a new training program.
Companies affected by the change could see some disruption, DHS wrote in its proposal, but it said the jobs could go to American workers instead. In some situations, immigrant workers who leave could potentially reapply if their employer petitions for them, it added.

Intellia Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTLA) entered a five-year senior secured credit facility with OrbiMed for up to $400 million and drew $75 million at closing. The remaining $325 million depends on milestones or further lender agreement.
The facility bears interest at an annual rate equal to the greater of 3% or the one-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate, plus 6.15%, payable monthly. The formula sets a 9.15% minimum. Applying that floor to the initial borrowing produces approximately $6.9 million of article-calculated annual interest before commitment, administrative, undrawn-amount, and facility fees.
The financing arrives as Intellia Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTLA) prepares for a potential U.S. launch of lonvoguran ziclumeran, or lonvo-z, for hereditary angioedema. Intellia Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTLA) held $628.4 million of cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities as of June 30, but reported a $106.6 million second-quarter net loss.
The staged structure gives Intellia Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTLA) capital without issuing equity at closing and avoids drawing the full amount before milestones that could support additional debt.
A second $75 million tranche becomes available at the option of Intellia Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTLA) if the FDA approves the biologics license application for lonvo-z before a specified date. Three further $40 million tranches depend on lonvo-z revenue targets, while another $30 million requires an equity-fundraising milestone. This links most committed borrowing capacity to regulatory and commercial progress.

This week's ETF Zoo crew takes a lay of the land as summer comes to a close and some new and interesting developments crop up. ETF.com hosts Dave Nadig, President & Director of Research, and Sumit Roy, Senior ETF ****** yst, are joined in this episode by Cinthia Murphy, Director of Research at TMX VettaFi, and James Seyffart, CFA, CAIA, Senior Research ****** yst at Bloomberg Intelligence. M&A land grab in full swing. Billions in ETF acquisitions, including Victory Capital/First Eagle, Vanguard/Altruist, and more, signal that scale instead of organic growth now drives the industry. The Zoo crew debated whether firms are buying hit products, talent, or distribution, and what could be ahead for the industry.
Leverage and gambling push into new territory. Defiance's hourly-reset leveraged ETFs barely differ from daily resets despite pulling in huge fees, while Korea and ****** an crack down on single-stock leverage entirely. New NHL-linked sports-betting ETFs raised bigger concerns about routing gambling risk through the same rails as retirement savings.
AI concentration is everywhere, even where you don't expect it. Thematic and datacenter ETFs quietly hold the same chokepoint stocks like Micron and Nvidia, sparking debate over whether that's a feature or a vulnerability. However, real revenue growth at companies like Anthropic and OpenAI kept the Zoo Crew from sounding the alarm just yet.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) represent two sides of a historical silicon transition. A September 2 report from MacRumors highlighted a key milestone: Apple notified developers that universal Mac App Store apps requiring macOS 13 or later can now drop support for Intel-based Macs. Removing Intel binary slices simplifies app development and reduces download sizes. While symbolic, the move underscores Apple's completed transition to Apple Silicon and highlights Intel's diminishing footprint within Apple's high-margin ecosystem.
Financially, Apple is faring significantly better than Intel.
For Q3 2026 (ended June 27, 2026), Apple reported record quarterly revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16% year-over-year, driven by double-digit growth across iPhone, Mac, and Services. The company's gross margin reached 50.1%, supported by a 2 percentage point favorable impact from tariff refunds. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) surged 29% year-over-year to $2.02, which included a $0.11 favorable boost from tariff refunds. Operating cash flow and active installed base both set new June quarter records.
Intel's Q2 2026 financial results (ended June 27, 2026) delivered $16.1 billion in quarterly revenue, up 25% year-over-year, marking its fastest top-line growth in over 15 years. Intel reported a GAAP net loss of $11.0 billion (GAAP EPS of -$2.16), largely driven by non-cash charges and mark-to-market adjustments. However, on a non-GAAP basis, net income reached $2.2 billion ($0.42 diluted EPS), nearly doubling consensus expectations. Non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 41.8% (40.4% GAAP) on strong product mix and factory yields.
Apple's bull case centers on expanding Services margins, strong ecosystem lock-in, and the potential for Apple Intelligence to drive further demand and engagement across iOS and macOS devices, supporting high-margin growth. On the other hand, Apple faces risks from elevated valuation multiples, sluggish growth in Greater China, where Q3 revenue reached $14.7 billion, and ongoing global antitrust scrutiny over App Store fees.

Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD) could gain an important new source of fee revenue with its recently launched Robinhood Chain platform. Activity on that blockchain is accelerating rapidly.
On September 4, Deutsche Bank raised its price target on Robinhood stock to $136 from $115. It also raised its earnings estimates for the company. The bank cited a sharp increase in Chain fee revenue as the reason for these upgrades.
Now, the more important question for investors is not whether the Robinhood Chain is generating fees. Instead, it is whether the recent surge in network activity can become a sustained source of earnings growth.
The pace and scale of the recent increase are difficult to ignore. Robinhood Chain's daily revenue run rate was below $200,000 through mid-August, according to data from DeFiLlama cited by Deutsche Bank. The figure jumped sharply to nearly $500,000 on August 29 before exploding to almost $1 million on August 30.
It kept rising from there. Daily revenue surpassed $1.9 million on August 31, reached $3.38 million on September 1, and hit $4.01 million on September 2.

Buc-ee's has won another legal battle to protect its famous beaver mascot.
A federal judge has ordered South Carolina clothing retailer Born United to pay more than $850,000 after the company admitted to infringing on Buc-ee's trademark, according to the Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network. The judgment permanently prohibits Born United from using Buc-ee's beaver logo or any mark considered "confusingly similar."
The order also requires Born United to destroy merchandise bearing the disputed logo, remove advertisements featuring it and could require the company to pay Buc-ee's attorney fees if it violates the terms of the judgment.
The ruling is the latest victory for the Texas-based travel center chain, which has aggressively defended its trademarks as it expands across the United States. Buc-ee's has filed a number of lawsuits in recent years against businesses it says copied elements of its branding, including its recognizable smiling beaver mascot.

Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison after he was convicted of six felonies related to dog fighting.
Authorities seized 190 dogs from Johnson's property, the most dogs ever seized from any individual in a federal dog fighting investigation. This is Johnson's second dog fighting conviction; he was also convicted of state dog fighting charges in Oklahoma in 2004.
"LeShon Johnson continued to traffic dogs for illegal fighting despite a 2004 state conviction for similar conduct," said Deputy **** istant Attorney General Adam Gustafson. "We are grateful to our colleagues at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma and the FBI for partnering with ENRD to bring this repeat offender to justice and to the U.S. Marshals Service for executing the biggest rescue operation of its kind."
The Department of Justice says Johnson made hundreds of thousands of dollars through his dog fighting operation, selling dogs he described as fighting champions, selling puppies he said were bred to be fighting champions, and charging stud fees to other dog fighters so that his champion males could breed with their females.
The 55-year-old Johnson was a third-round pick of the Packers in 1994 and also played for the Cardinals and Giants before finishing his pro football career with the XFL's Chicago Enforcers.

Stewart ***** et Management's flagship portfolio returned 15.97%, net of fees, in the second quarter, and the S&P 500 Index gained 15.20%. YTD, it appreciated 5.37%, net of fees, and the S&P 500 Index gained 10.21%. The letter can be downloaded here. Despite geopolitical uncertainties, share prices surged higher as emerging prospects for a ceasefire in the Middle East restored market composure and investor optimism for continued earnings growth in the second half of the year. Volatility in share prices was noted, particularly tied to industrial trends like AI, with comparisons made to the internet boom and personal computer adoption. Despite concerns about extreme valuations and potential corrections, the conclusion is that strong earnings growth is fundamental to rising share prices, emphasizing the importance of investing in robust businesses. Please check the fund's top five holdings for its best picks in 2026.

If you were fortunate enough to invest $1,000 in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) a decade ago on Sept. 3, 2016, you would have roughly $126,810 today -- an incredible return that absolutely crushed the market. Take a look at that incredible growth in the chart below:
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Note that the calculation excludes trading fees and taxes, and the exact total fluctuates daily with Bitcoin's price. Still, turning four figures into six figures in one decade is a remarkable result by any standard.
That's putting it lightly. Few things came remotely close to a 12,581% return -- a 62% annual rate -- in that time. Compare Bitcoin's annual rate of return with some other options you would have had in 2016.

Aston Villa begin their 2026-27 Champions League campaign at Club Brugge on Tuesday, returning to continental football for the first time since winning the Europa League in Istanbul four months ago.
The Belgian champions, who have reached the knockout stage in each of their last three European campaigns, provide an early test for a Villa squad still adjusting to a heavy summer rebuild.
Tuesday's meeting is the fourth between these clubs in two years. Brugge won the earlier league-phase fixture 1-0 in Belgium during 2024-25, but Villa gained revenge in the round of 16, winning 6-1 on aggregate courtesy of a 3-1 victory in Bruges followed by a 3-0 win at Villa Park.
Both clubs sold key players for significant fees over the summer, with Villa losing Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martínez; Brugge have adapted more quickly, sitting second in the Belgian Pro League after four wins from five matches, while Villa have collected only a single point from their opening three Premier League games and remain without a league goal this season.

On August 5, Murphy USA (NYSE:MUSA) reported second-quarter results that make the case for its unglamorous business model. Net income came in at $209.1 million, or $11.27 per diluted share, up from $145.6 million and $7.36 per share in the same quarter of 2025. Adjusted EBITDA climbed to $377.3 million from $286.0 million. For a company that mostly sells gasoline and convenience store snacks, that is a striking jump, and it did not come from a single lucky quarter.
The engine behind the gain was fuel. Total fuel contribution reached 40.6 cents per gallon in the quarter, up from 32.0 cents a year earlier, while the retail fuel margin alone rose 20.2% to 35.1 cents per gallon. Volume grew at the same time, with total retail gallons up 3.9% and same-store sales volumes up 0.5%, so Murphy USA was not just pricing better; it was also moving more gas through its pumps. Merchandise held up its end too, with contribution dollars up 4.0% to $227.4 million on unit margins of 20.1%, as nicotine contribution rose 6.1% and non-nicotine contribution grew 2.9%.
The company kept returning cash to shareholders through it all, buying back 143.1 thousand shares for $76.8 million and raising its quarterly dividend 28.0% year over year to $0.64 per share. In May, it issued $500 million of notes due 2034 and used the proceeds to retire $300 million of 2027 notes, pushing out its debt maturities while continuing to open new stores, with 6 net additions in the quarter and 36 more under construction.
The quarter's growth came with a heavier expense load. Total store and other operating expenses rose to $308.7 million from $275.2 million, and the company said two-thirds of that increase came from payment processing fees, which climb automatically as retail fuel prices rise. SG&A costs increased to $60.5 million from $50.9 million on higher employee costs and incentive accruals, and the effective tax rate ticked up to 24.7% from 24.4%, with guidance now pointing to the higher end of the company's 23% to 25% full-year range.
Fuel supply contribution, excluding renewable credits, was negative $54.9 million, a wider loss than the negative $25.9 million posted a year earlier. Management's own full-year outlook **** umes some cooling ahead: its projection of roughly $636 million in net income and $1.25 billion in Adjusted EBITDA is built on second-half fuel margins averaging 35 cents per gallon, down from 37.9 cents in the first half. Capital expenditures are also being guided to the higher end of the $475 million to $525 million range, meaning the spending pace is not slowing even as margins are expected to.

King Charles is reportedly incensed over the fact that another entity knew of Prince Harry's UK move first. The King is reportedly "furious" after finding out that the Duke of Sussex informed the UK Home Office of his return to the country before his father. As per multiple reports, the Sussexes flew privately from California to Birmingham on August 26. Charles was reportedly made aware of the couple's plans on August 16.
King Charles is reportedly "furious" over the fact that Prince Harry notified the UK Home Office about his move before the King. As per Radar Online, Harry contacted the authorities at the Home Office earlier this month to secure some kind of protection for Meghan Markle and their children.
The King was informed only a couple of days prior to Harry and Meghan shifting back to the UK. The royal source explained that the monarch was aware that the British authorities needed to be informed first, given the Duke of Sussex's long-running concerns about security. "What angered him and made him furious was discovering that officials apparently knew something as significant as his son's return before he did," the source added.
As per the royal source, Charles deems this "extremely disappointing," especially after their July meeting at Highgrove House. The King reportedly understands this is not a casual visit. The report further highlights Harry's decision to bring his wife and children for an extended stay in Britain.
According to PEOPLE, the Sussexes intend to stay in the UK for an extended period of time. The couple will reportedly reside in a private, non-royal home while retaining their homes in Montecito and Portugal. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, have reportedly been enrolled in a prep school in the UK with staggering annual fees. The location of the family's new home and the children's school is being kept confidential.

McDonald's India deleted a run of posts from its verified X (Twitter) account on Sunday. Written in the first person, they claimed an unpaid intern was owed ₹60,000, then promoted a meme coin.
The drama arrived at a low point for the stock. McDonald's Corporation (MCD) closed Friday at $255.69, its weakest level in a year. However, Wall Street has not followed it down.
The account said the writer interned at McDonald's India and ran several of the company's Asian social media handles. It named a manager, Amit Joshi, and said no salary had arrived since December 2025.
A later post revised that date to May, an inconsistency that fueled doubt. Another put the outstanding sum above ₹60,000, roughly $650. One said meme coin trading losses had left the writer starving daily.
Final messages promoted a token and shared crypto wallet addresses, before noting that fees had been claimed. McDonald's India pulled the thread and answered with a meme of a dog holding a phone.

Karmelo Anthony's family is seeking another $250,000 to fund his appeal after an earlier campaign raised nearly $634,000 and faced questions over how the money was spent, the family announced at a news conference in Dallas, Texas.
The fundraising push came nearly two weeks after a judge denied Anthony's request for a new trial. His family and supporters, including attorney Russell Wilson, used the Dallas news conference to outline the appeal.
Anthony, 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in June after a jury convicted him of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. He has appealed and says he cannot afford to hire an attorney for the appeal.

One of the toughest hurdles for retirees is working out how to pay themselves and then spending the money.
For decades, the pressure has been to save. When the time comes to start drawing on those funds, it can be paralyzing.
Personal finance expert Jean Chatzky has a solution: Use an annuity to provide a paycheck.
To annuitize essentially means to convert a lump sum portion of a retirement account into a contract that pays you a fixed monthly amount for a specified period or for the rest of your life.
The trouble is that annuities sold by insurance companies have a bad undertone for many people. They can be difficult to understand and typically come with a variety of fees. It's hard to know what the real cost is and what the penalties are if you need to tap the money for an emergency.

Manchester United are on course for a big three-point haul away from home, as they lead Everton by a goal-to-nil at Hill ****** inson Stadium.
Deadlocked at the halftime interval in what looked to be a fixture headed to full time without a definitive result for either side, it was the Red Devils who broke the deadlock with a sensational hit by Bryan Mbeumo.
After receiving from Kobbie Mainoo, the Cameroonian darted forward and slalomed his way through the Toffees defence before curling an effort into the bottom corner beyond Jordan Pickford.
With that, Mbeumo finally bagged his first Premier League goal against Everton on his staggering 22nd attempt.
A player who has hardly struggled to find the back of the net against big opponents on his day, Mbeumo will be keen to remain a vital cog in the wheel for Michael Carrick's men as Manchesrer United hope to push for major honours this season.

Everton host Manchester United on Sunday hoping to put a difficult end to the transfer window behind them and continue their unbeaten start to the season.
The Toffees saw a deadline-day deal for USMNT star Folarin Balogun collapse, leaving them with Thierno Barry as their only recognised centre-forward for the coming weeks. The nature of the club's fraught transfer window has led to increased frustration among supporters.
United had a far quieter deadline day as they opted against a last-minute signing, yet there are doubts too about the Red Devils' strength in depth. Last weekend's 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town got them up and running in the Premier League, but they will need to build on that result if they are to prove that their relatively frugal summer was not a mistake.
The Sporting News looks at the key details ahead of this game, including how to watch the match, kickoff times and the weekly schedule.

On August 4, Hamilton Lane (NASDAQ:HLNE) posted a first fiscal quarter that showed just how far the private markets manager has scaled. Revenue jumped 56% year over year to $275.3 million, fee-related earnings climbed 49% to $124.5 million, and the firm's total ******* et footprint pushed past $1.1 trillion. That kind of quarter would normally be the whole story. Instead, it came wrapped around three separate balance sheet payouts and a candid admission that client flows have gotten choppier than the headline numbers suggest.
Hamilton Lane's specialized funds are doing the heavy lifting. Fee-earning ******* ets under management in that category grew 25% year over year to $42.6 billion, and that mix shift toward higher-fee products pushed the blended fee rate up to 69 basis points. Management and advisory fees rose 21% to $161.4 million, and FRE margin expanded to 53% from 51% a year earlier, a sign the extra revenue is reaching the bottom line rather than getting absorbed by costs.
The Evergreen platform, Hamilton Lane's semi-liquid product line built for individual and smaller institutional investors, generated $640 million of net inflows and ended the quarter with $19 billion in ******* ets. Ten of twelve funds took in net new money, and none of them needed to gate redemptions even as the broader alternatives industry has wrestled with liquidity questions. The company also added six senior Evergreen sales professionals poached from Fidelity, BlackRock, PIMCO, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and Monroe Capital, and just landed its multi-strategy equity fund on a third wirehouse platform.
Fundraising on the closed-end side was equally strong. The sixth direct equity fund closed at $3.8 billion combined, 57% larger than its predecessor, while the seventh secondary fund and second venture fund each held first closes, at $1.3 billion and $370 million. On top of that, Hamilton Lane is set to book roughly $33 million in combined gains from monetizing its stakes in Russell Investments and Canoe, on top of a newly public stake in Securitize.
Not every part of the story is clean. Hamilton Lane's non-US multi-strategy equity fund swung to net outflows for the quarter, and management pointed to a broader hesitancy taking hold. Co-CEO Erik Hirsch acknowledged "a slowdown in flows on certain products and the general hesitancy with investors," a rare moment of candor from a company that otherwise leaned on strong numbers.

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 4 (Reuters) - When traffic authorities confiscate a delivery rider's motorcycle in Buenos Aires, getting back to work can depend on taking out costly digital loans, feeding a debt cycle that is increasingly binding Argentina's gig workers to the apps they rely on for income.
Albert Quintero, a 41-year-old courier, earns on average 70,000 pesos ($46) per day delivering takeaway meals. But recovering an impounded motorcycle can cost around 140,000 pesos ($90) in fines and fees, a bill he says many workers can't afford without borrowing.
More app workers are turning to fintech loans, including credit offered by the same delivery platforms they work for, despite interest rates that regularly run into triple digits.
Apps such as PedidosYa offer loans to riders at a 131% annual rate, while digital wallet Personal Pay charges around 170%.

On the September 2 episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer called Cardinal Health, Inc. (NYSE:CAH) one of his "absolute favorites" and mentioned its growing exposure to specialty pharmaceuticals and higher-margin healthcare services.
Cardinal's been running circles around McKesson and Cencora. They consistently put up the best numbers because this company has gradually become less of a commoditized service provider and more of a specialized player.
Cardinal Health, Inc.'s (NYSE:CAH) fiscal fourth-quarter revenue rose 6% to $63.7 billion but missed estimates, while adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.91. Excluding a $0.31 per share tariff refund benefit, adjusted EPS was $2.60. Management forecast fiscal 2027 non-GAAP EPS of $12.40 to $12.60, a 13% to 15% growth, while adjusted free cash flow is expected at $3.5 billion to $4 billion.
The revenue miss is less significant if the company continues converting pharmaceutical volume into earnings. Lower branded-drug prices, including those affected by Medicare negotiations, can reduce reported sales without a proportional decline in distributor fees. The shift toward generics can have a similar effect because lower-priced drugs generate less revenue but can support attractive margins and high volumes. As Cramer said:
Remember, volume is where Cardinal really makes the money, volume, okay? That's why I keep shrugging off the revenue misses.
