The White House on Thursday withdrew the nomination of Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a Republican blocked his confirmation hearing.
Schroyer's nomination stalled after Senate Homeland Security Chair Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a foe of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, requested that the Department of Homeland Security provide his committee with more information about its investigation into two ICE and Border Patrol agents accused of killing two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January.
Paul, who as chair controls the committee's hearing and markup agenda, did not oppose Schroyer's nomination, per Drew Carmichael, a spokesperson for the senator.
Schroyer was a surprise pick to lead ICE. He had no experience leading a major law enforcement agency, let alone an organization the size of ICE. But Schroyer has close ties with the DHS secretary. Schroyer at one point led Mullin's security detail and Mullin made Schroyer a senior adviser at DHS.
The White House and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Third-party logistics provider Radiant Logistics beat fiscal fourth-quarter expectations Monday after the market closed. A Palestinian fashion designer says she nearly closed down her fashion brand until Olivia Rodrigo stepped in.
In a new interview, designer Yasmeen Mjalli told Vogue Arabia that her brand Nöl Collective, founded in 2020, almost exclusively imported natural fibers to create their clothes. She recalled the numerous challenges and hardships of creating new pieces in the West Bank.
Mjalli told the magazine she once ordered a shipment of naturally dyed handwoven wool for the brand's autumn collection, only for it to have been held and ultimately destroyed by Israeli customs. She said she made an attempt to source replacement fabric in Jerusalem, but her efforts were thwarted due to the army closing down roads out of Ramallah.
"I was genuinely like, maybe we should stop, maybe this is our last effort. I was just so tired," Mjalli said.

Sept 8 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld an injunction blocking an Internal Revenue Service policy that allowed it to share thousands of taxpayers' ‌addresses with immigration authorities, saying the Trump administration's practice violated federal law.
A three-judge panel of ‌the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the IRS last year disclosed roughly 47,000 taxpayer addresses to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under a procedure adopted as part of the administration's efforts to expand immigration enforcement.
The IRS and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not respond to requests for comment.
Under an agreement between the agencies, the IRS in July 2025 began processing ICE ‌requests for the last known addresses ⁠of as many as 1.28 million people suspected of unlawfully residing in the United States.

BOSTON (AP) — The highest court in Massachusetts on Thursday issued a public reprimand against a district court judge who was accused of allowing an immigrant to escape U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
The case dates back to 2018 when Judge Shelley Joseph was accused of colluding with the immigrant's attorney and a court officer to allow him to escape out a back door of the courthouse after a hearing on charges that included drug possession.
The decision by the Supreme Judicial Court follows a recommendation for the reprimand by a hearing officer for the Commission on Judicial Conduct. It concluded that Joseph created the appearance of impropriety and failed to comply with the law.
"The respondent's statements during that conversation, including her proposal to detain (the immigrant) overnight in State custody, and her conduct in instructing the clerk to turn off the court room audio recording system, created an appearance of impropriety in violation of her duties," according to the Supreme Judicial Court ruling.
Joseph's attorney, Elizabeth Mulvey, argued at the commission hearing last year that the case had been distorted over time and that everyone had come to believe that her client "let an illegal immigrant out of the door" with half the public believing she should be jailed and the other half calling her a "folk hero."

Chinese independent refiners may be about to start reducing their processing rates as international oil prices rise and supply from major exporters such as Venezuela and Iran dries up as a result of U.S. foreign policy decisions.

Ebbsfleet United will be able to start their season on Saturday after the National League lifted the club's suspension.
The Kent club had their first six National League South games postponed while they addressed ongoing financial issues, which had led His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to issue a winding-up petition over unpaid debts going back to April.
A takeover of the club last month, by new owner John O'Leary, allowed Ebbsfleet to fully pay HMRC and players.

Milo Yiannopoulos, a far-right provocateur who praised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement before recently being detained by the agency, said in an interview Sept. 1 that his time in custody left him "weeping like an old woman."
Yiannopoulos, a native of the United Kingdom, became a prominent political commentator in the lead up to President Donald Trump's first term in office. Known as a whisperer of the alt-right, including neo-Nazis, Yiannopoulos delivered controversial speeches at university campuses where he railed against everything, from Islam to trans people.
The Briton was arrested Aug. 27 by federal agents in Louisiana after overstaying a visa. He had previously been issued a final order of removal after failing to show up for an immigration hearing in July. After being detained, Yiannopoulos was deported to the U.K. on Aug. 28.
"I didn't really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America," Yiannopoulos said in an interview with fellow British commentator Piers Morgan on "Piers Morgan Uncensored".
"It was physically degrading. It was frightening," he told Morgan. "I don't think I've ever been frightened like that before."

The federal memo dated August 24 said the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which is part of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, has "observed a rise in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorizations that appear to violate regulatory requirements which permit CPT only where the training is an integral part of an established curriculum."
"Failure to comply with SEVP regulations may result in an institution losing certification to enroll foreign students," the memo said.

A Florida high school football player has been held on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold for over a week, as first reported by TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Emmanuel Nelson, an 18-year-old senior at Port St. Lucie High School, was driving a silver Toyota SUV when he was pulled over for going 45 mph in a 20-mph school zone, according to St. Lucie County court records obtained by USA TODAY. He received a citation for unlawful speed in a school zone on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
According to the police report, which was obtained by USA TODAY on Aug. 27, in the midst of the traffic stop, the officer ran Nelson's driver's license, which revealed he wasn't a U.S. citizen and that his working permits had expired. Nelson is originally from Haiti.
Because Nelson is a documented non-U.S. citizen, the officer contacted ICE, which placed a detainer on Nelson to determine where he should be placed into deportation proceedings. He was then arrested in handcuffs and transported to the St. Lucie County jail, where he was held for a week before being transferred to ICE custody in Broward County, where he remains as of this publication.
"It's just been a weird situation for the whole team, and it's not just for me," Port St. Lucie head coach Everette Alford told TCPalm. "All of his best friends are out there on the field, and they're missing him."

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer charged with shooting a man and lying about it during the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis was released from a Texas jail Thursday, after a judge refused to order his return to Minnesota.
Christian Castro was released at the break of dawn from a detention center in Brownsville. He motioned his hand toward a few camera operators and a reporter crowding around him and quickly got into an SUV that drove off.
A day earlier, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. wrote in an order that said he couldn't prevent a county sheriff from releasing Castro or order Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to sign his extradition warrant.
Castro is charged in Minnesota with ***** ault and falsely reporting a crime in the Jan. 14 shooting of 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
Castro is accused of firing a gun through the front door of a Minneapolis home, shooting Sosa-Celis in the leg. Prosecutors say Castro also falsely accused Sosa-Celis and another man of attacking an ICE officer with a broom handle and a snow shovel.

The Department of Homeland Security is calling out Boston Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu's "unhinged" effort to dissuade business owners from leasing to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city, equating it to "hunting down" private property owners.

• The changes come after the U.S. Trade Representative in May launched a Section 301 investigation into Vietnam's intellectual property regime after designating the country a "priority foreign country" in its annual Special 301 review.
• Among ‌the concerns cited by ⁠USTR were widespread counterfeiting, weak border enforcement, limited use of customs' authority to seize suspected counterfeit goods on its ⁠own initiative, and the absence of similar powers over goods transiting Vietnam.
• The revised law, which takes effect in March 2027, expands customs enforcement provisions to cover not only imported and exported goods but also goods transiting ‌through Vietnam, broadening the range of shipments that may be subject to intervention by customs authorities.

Scott Szwast, UPS vice president of international strategy, framed the spending as an effort to build out capabilities that help customers in specialized sectors navigate increasingly complicated global supply chains. "These investments are really aligned to one of our big strategic areas of focus, which is creating capabilities to enable our customers, particularly in complex industries, to more effectively run their global supply chains," he told CNBC.
Among the initiatives are a new hub in the Philippines slated for this year, a facility in Ontario, Canada, due to open in 2027, and an air hub at Hong Kong International Airport scheduled for 2028. UPS has also opened a technology-enabled logistics center in Taiwan and an Amsterdam facility that integrates freight forwarding, customs brokerage, and cold-chain capabilities under one roof. The Taiwan facility has used automation and robotics to cut total supply chain time by one day, Szwast said. UPS also operates weekly service on the Paris–Hong Kong route and the Shenzhen–Sydney route, each running five days a week.
Szwast said that as global supply chains come under growing strain, companies have moved to spread risk across multiple sourcing and distribution points rather than relying on a single node, even as those same businesses push out new products with unfamiliar logistics demands faster than ever before. "What they find in a lot of cases is that their supply chains look more like their histories than their strategies," he said.
The $2 billion figure encompasses a previously announced $48 million buildout of 27 temperature-controlled facilities across the Americas, Europe, and Asia aimed at handling temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, including GLP-1 weight loss drugs. UPS said the healthcare initiative is part of its broader effort to grow in higher-margin logistics services.

On August 13, Fermi Inc. (NASDAQ:FRMI) held its second-quarter earnings call and delivered exactly the kind of update a young power developer needs: proof that its plans are turning into contracts. Chairman Marius Haas told investors the company had hit all five commitments from a 90-day plan he laid out three months earlier, topped by a binding customer agreement with AI infrastructure company TensorWave. For a business that still has no meaningful revenue and years of construction ahead of it, a signed customer paired with visible progress on the ground is exactly what shareholders wanted to see.
The headline item is the TensorWave agreement itself: up to 650 megawatts of power if every expansion option is exercised, split across three phases. The initial phase is a 15-year commitment for 222 megawatts of gross power delivered through a turnkey data center solution, worth about $6.5 billion in revenue over that term. Chief Commercial Officer Anna Bofa described the deal as more than one customer's order, noting that the $6.5 billion figure is tied strictly to this Phase 1 commitment, while the campus holds a total expansion potential of up to 650 megawatts. This positions TensorWave as a gateway to hyperscalers and chipmakers that could add more workloads to the campus later on.
Fermi backed the contract with hardware. Three Siemens Energy F-class units, each rated above 242 megawatts, reached the Port of Houston in July and cleared customs to advance the company's 2028 and 2029 power delivery objectives, while a separate configuration of simple cycle turbines and utility power feeds the plan to deliver 640 megawatts of nameplate capacity by the fourth quarter of 2027, with the first 210 megawatts online by July 1, 2027. A new alliance with Hillcore Energy Partners adds another 2.6 gigawatts within three years, with Hillcore financing and building that facility while Fermi simply collects rent, doubling the campus's planned output to 4.8 gigawatts at no extra capital cost to Fermi. The quarter also brought a stronger balance sheet, via an upsized offering of more than $430 million in convertible senior notes, yielding approximately $382 million in net proceeds after a capped call, and a new chief executive in Lee McIntire, whose résumé includes running major projects at Bechtel, McDermott, and TerraPower.
Some of the biggest figures on the call still come with asterisks. The backstop agreement sitting behind the TensorWave lease wasn't finished as of the call, and Fermi hasn't named the counterparty standing behind it, only that a deal was expected within days. Management also said the broader campus can't break ground until project financing beyond this round is lined up, a reminder that the recent convertible note raise alone doesn't cover building out a multi-billion dollar site. NEW YORK (AP) — The pilot of a speedboat that capsized during a tour around the Statue of Liberty, drowning an infant and her mother, has been arrested by U.S. immigration authorities who say he was in the country illegally.
Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, who has a pending federal criminal case in connection with the Aug. 8 crash, lied to a border officer and falsely claimed he was a U.S. citizen when he entered the country in Texas in 2007, the Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday.
Hernandez-Umana, 46, a citizen of El Salvador, is being held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, according to online records. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said he will eventually be deported.
Immigration authorities arrested him after he was released on bail in his criminal case, where he is charged with causing the deaths of 5-month old Antonella Garcia and 27-year-old Sara Sanchez through misconduct or neglect.
According to prosecutors, Hernandez-Umana wasn't licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, wasn't aware of basic safety rules and told investigators he'd borrowed his friend's personal vessel for the New York Harbor excursion. The boat was illegally chartered and overcrowded, prosecutors said.

Not On The High Street (NOTHS) said it made the "difficult decision" after "recent updates to international shipping and customs regulations".
