Last week, Free Press readers voted for the best quarterback heading into the upcoming season based on high school sports reporter Jared Ramsey's preseason coverage. This week's poll focuses on Ramsey's rankings of the state's top running backs.
Voting will close at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 30.

The rising senior helped power one of the state's top offenses last season. Coleman, who can star at running back, receiver and returner, had 1,181 all-purpose yards (840 rushing and 341 receiving) and 19 total touchdowns.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew Stafford looked across the Los Angeles Rams ' line in his first practice of training camp Monday and saw both the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and the highest-paid cornerback in the league. When he dropped back, he could throw to last season's NFL leader in yards receiving last season or touchdown receptions.
Stafford is the reigning NFL MVP and a Super Bowl champion himself, but he also spent enough seasons of his career on mediocre teams to recognize just how good he has it here in his 18th year.
"It was a blast to be out here today," Stafford said. "I'm surrounded by so many great players, and I don't take that for granted, both on our side of the football and on the defensive side. It's a blessing to come out here every single day and compete against these guys and play with the guys on the offensive side. Just an exciting time."
After sitting out of Sunday's opening practice as part of the Rams' plan to keep their franchise quarterback in top shape for the season ahead, Stafford looked remarkably sharp in his first workout of training camp. He repeatedly found All-Pro Puka Nacua and Davante Adams in solid coverage with long, precise throws that had the crowd at Loyola Marymount cheering.
The Rams made a handful of bold personnel moves in the past four months to maximize the size of their remaining championship window with their 38-year-old quarterback, but coach Sean McVay said on the opening day of camp that he won't measure his team's success or failure "by whether or not we win a Super Bowl."

It had been coming, but the news was confirmed today that Idrissa Gana Gueye has left Everton with the expiration of his current contract.
There was a clause in his deal for an optional year, but talks between the club and player looked to have broken down and with a lucrative offer coming in from Al-Diriyah in the Saudi league for the midfielder, Gana has chosen to leave the club.
The 36-year-old had been a mainstay for the club in the middle of the park over two stints, having first signed for the Blues in the summer of 2016 from Aston Villa. He left for three years to play at his boyhood favourite club Paris St. Germain before returning in 2022.
Gueye's tough-tackling, no-nonsense style won him a legion of followers across the fanbase as he soared to the top of league in most defensive metrics, and was instrumental in keeping the club up during recent relegation battles.
He made a total of 236 appearances for the Toffees, winning the Club's Player of the Season award in 2024/25 and twice being named Players' Player of the Season.

Dystany Spurlock continues to be a disruptor. The 34-year-old will make her fifth ARCA Menards Series start of the year at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Friday.
In March, Spurlock (whose first name is ******* ounced Destiny) became the first Black woman to compete in a NASCAR-sanctioned series when she raced in the ARCA Menards Series East at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina. After doing two races in the East series, Spurlock made it to the premier ARCA series in April, when she finished 10th at Kansas Speedway.
Less than a year after Spurlock raced in her second NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle race at IRP, she’ll return to the track, but in a stock car this time.
“To be able to know that I raced over there on the drag strip and now I'm over here on the circle track,” Spurlock told IndyStar, “that means so much to me because I did not know that this would happen so fast within a year’s time.”
Most of Spurlock’s experience before this year came in motorcycle drag racing. She has also raced arena carts and drove in Skip Barber’s Formula 4 series in 2023.

Since September 29, Hill has been recovering from a dislocated knee, along with multiple torn ligaments, in his left leg. While he stayed positive even as he was being carted off the field at Hard Rock Stadium, the receiver shared an update on Wednesday that showed he isn't ready for a return just yet.
It may happen if he heals up, but for now, the 32-year-old needs to do two things in order to play in the NFL again.

St Helens head coach Paul Rowley has stepped down from his position with the Super League club with immediate effect less than a year into the role.
The 51-year-old joined the club before the 2026 season, having previously taken charge at Salford Red Devils, ending his tenure there after their financially-challenged 2025 campaign.
Since joining Saints, however, the club have struggled for form and, with an injury crisis, are currently sixth in the table and six points behind leaders Leeds Rhinos.
They have also lost six of their past 10 games in all competitions with Rowley's departure announced prior to Friday's derby against Wigan Warriors.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Reid Detmers had another stellar start out of the All-Star Break on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, but he was facing a different kind of foe while battling it out with the Cardinals: the summer sun.
It was a hot one at game time and Detmers was at the mercy of the Wednesday afternoon sun the entire time on the mound. While he more or less cruised through the Cardinals lineup for most of his start, fatigue started to set in as his velocity steadily dropped the entire game, going from 94.1 MPH on his first fastball of the game to just 91.9 on his last.
"It was just hot. The first couple innings felt really good and then the longer I stayed out there, obviously the more tired I got," Detmers said. "But, I didn't really feel like my stuff felt bad. Just the velo's down a little bit. Stuff felt really good actually."
That last fastball was also the one that caused him the most trouble considering that JJ Wentworth took it for a ride for his 15th home run of the season, a solo shot that broke a scoreless tie and put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 in the top of the sixth.
After that, manager Kurt Suzuki from the game to finish what was otherwise an outstanding start with Detmers going 5.1 innings pitched with just one earned run, two hits and two walks allowed while striking out six.

It's hard to believe that this coming January will mark ten years. I remember when I heard the news. It hit me like a slug hitting a deer. I had to sit for a few minutes, reading and re-reading the story. My brain refused to believe that the news was true, but eventually reality set in.
All of us have different memories and reactions to the death of Yordano Ventura. Things we know for certain: he had one of the best arms the Royals ever signed and developed. His stuff was electric. He had a fiery attitude that we loved and opponents often hated. He had his share of dustups, notably with Mike Trout, Manny Machado, Jose Bautista, and the entire roster of the Chicago White Sox. There was also a tiff with Brett Lawrie that looked personal. Even when he was in the wrong, we stood behind him because he was our guy.
I loved the way he would swing his right leg around after delivering one of his blazing fastballs.
We felt like he was just starting to tap into his massive potential. Then he was gone way too soon.
His postseason appearances were must-see TV. Ned Yost unwittingly used him as a reliever in the 2014 Wild Card Game, which ended in a spectacular blowup. He was brilliant against the Angels in the Division Series, tossing five-hit ball over seven shutout innings. He threw 95 pitches in that game. Twenty-two of those pitches reached 100 mph or more. When you add in his devastating curveball, well, sometimes there's just no chance for the hitter. He was brilliant against the Giants in the World Series, allowing just two runs in 12.1 innings of work.

Hamburger SV have completed the signing of 27-year-old Zambian forward Patson Daka.
The striker joins the Bundesliga club on a free transfer after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of last season.
“With Patson, we have brought in exactly the kind of centre-forward we were looking for. He works extremely hard both in and out of possession and is a team player who always puts the side first,” said HSV board member for sport Kathleen Krüger.
“He also brings plenty of experience at international level to the table. We’re convinced that Patson has the qualities to make an immediate difference for us and are delighted to welcome him to HSV.”
Daka is excited to begin a new chapter with Die Rothosen and believes he has the qualities to make a difference for the team.

The Eagles traded for veteran edge rusher Jonathan Greenard in April and signed him to a new four-year contract because they think he can make an impact for them on the field.
Greenard doesn't view that as the only reason why he's in Philadelphia, however. He will be part of a position group that also includes third-year player Jalyx Hunt and 2023 first-round pick Nolan Smith, and both of the younger players impressed him enough during the team's offseason workouts that he sees part of his role as making sure that they keep developing.
"I'm really excited. Jalyx and Nolan, their game is only going to continue to grow," Greenard said, via the team's website. "And I think my job here is just continue to help them with that. Any two cents I got, I'm going to [give them] to make sure that they get to that point that I know they want to get to."
The best-case scenario for the Eagles would be for Greenard to remain an effective pass rusher while Hunt and Smith take the next steps to form a potent trio they can pair with defensive tackles Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis on the front line of the defense.

Fenerbahce have signed English forward Mason Greenwood from Marseille on a four-year contract, with former club Manchester United set to receive a percentage of the fee.
The Turkish club state the transfer fee is 39m euros (£33.27m) but did previously advise it would be a total fee of 45m euros (£38.36m).
Greenwood finished joint-second behind Rennes' Esteban Lepaul in the 2025-26 Ligue 1 golden boot standings with 16.
The 24-year-old, who scored 48 goals in 81 appearances in all competition for Marseille, joined the French side from boyhood club Manchester United in a £26.6m deal in July 2024.
At the time, United said they had negotiated a "sizeable sell-on fee", which is thought to be around 40%, for the academy product.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says he is not concerned about fatigue or his team’s performance before another FIFA World Cup semifinal as they prepare to renew their rivalry with England on Wednesday.
The World Cup holders will be seeking to make it to consecutive finals by beating Thomas Tuchel’s side in a fixture that evokes 1986 and Diego Maradona, as well as the lingering sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.
“We are in good shape, and we really can’t wait. This is a World Cup semifinal, and our hopes are intact. We are so grateful to these players for getting us here again,” Scaloni told reporters on the eve of the showdown in Atlanta.

Manchester United fans would be forgiven for wondering where Kobbie Mainoo was when the club released a batch of images from the first day of pre-season training last week. After all, he has not played a minute at the World Cup, so where could he be?
The answer, unfortunately, is that he has spent the last six weeks warming England’s substitute bench. This, for a player of Mainoo’s calibre, is simply unacceptable and yet another blow in what has been a tricky season for the academy graduate.
While hopes are high that football might finally be coming home, Mainoo has likely given up all hope of playing a single minute in this summer’s tournament and will probably be counting the days until he can return to United and Michael Carrick, a manager who truly respects him.
Since Carrick took charge at the Red Devils in January, Mainoo has reminded everybody of the immense skills he possesses. These are skills that were, for some unknown reason, completely ignored by former United manager Ruben Amorim.
Despite having played barely any football in the first half of the season, the England international excelled after returning to the game and played a pivotal role in United qualifying for the Champions League. His incredible performances, which peaked in a goalscoring display against local rivals Liverpool, rightly attracted the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who opted to include him in his World Cup squad.

MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins have not won a playoff game since December of 2000.
But in September they'll begin a new era.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, coach Jeff Hafley and quarterback Malik Willis all come to South Florida from Green Bay.
Miami hopes to build around running back De'Von Achane, center Aaron Brewer, linebacker Jordyn Brooks and a handful of youngsters like Kadyn Proctor, Kenneth Grant, Chris Johnson, Patrick Paul and Jacob Rodriguez.

Detroit — Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, one of the biggest names in the sport who defected to LIV Golf in 2022 before returning to the PGA Tour earlier this year, will play in the Rocket Classic later this month.
A tournament official confirmed Koepka's commitment Monday.
It will be Koepka's first time playing the Rocket Classic, which will be played for the eighth and final time July 30-Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club. Koepka adds to a field that already includes world No. 4 Cameron Young, world No. 8 and two-time U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, and world No. 14 and two-time major champion Xander Schauffele.
Koepka became the first player to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf and then return to the PGA Tour when he was let out of his LIV Golf contract early in January. With his return to the PGA Tour came several significant financial penalties, including ineligibility for 2026 FedEx Cup bonus payouts.
But Koepka still is eligible to compete in playoff events and for those tournament purses if he qualifies. He's currently 84th in the playoff points race, and he'd make the first playoff event if he finishes the regular season in the top 70.

The first ever 48-team World Cup is nearing its conclusion - and already, Fifa president Gianni Infantino is hinting at further expansion.
Infantino has opened the door at expanding the tournament to 64 teams after ruling this year’s ******* per edition as a resounding success.
He successfully pushed for the growth of the World Cup to 48 teams when it was approved by the Fifa Council in 2017 but is likely to encounter greater resistance in his quest to go even bigger, with Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin among those to think the suggestion is a “bad idea”.
Such expansion would represent a doubling of participating nations in the ******* e of just two editions and eight years. Before this year’s tournament, a 32-team World Cup had been the norm since 1998.
But if a proposal for a 64-team World Cup was passed before the 2030 edition held across Spain, Portugal and Morocco, how would it work?

The silver lining for the Dodgers on Sunday is that they did not lose in lopsided fashion. But they did fall to the Diamondbacks for a third consecutive day, this time a more conventional 5-3 win for Arizona that capped off a series sweep and a deflating final week before the All-Star break.
Fielding miscues plagued the Dodgers this week, as nine errors in the last five games is no way to make a living. Two errors cropped up Sunday. Andy Pages dropped a fly ball during the two-run fifth inning, then Max Muncy's throw home hit a smartly-positioned Geraldo Perdomo, facilitating the two-run sixth inning that gave the Diamondbacks the lead for good.
That spoiled a promising start by Emmet Sheehan, who struck out seven against only one walk in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs but only one of them were earned.
Shohei Ohtani hit the first pitch of the game for a solo home run, his fourth in six games, and also doubled. Ohtani had two home runs in the series against Arizona, which matched Diamondbacks first baseman Tim Tawa for the weekend.
Tawa drove in seven runs in the series, one fewer than the Dodgers scored as a team. It was that kind of a weekend for Los Angeles.

Cooper Kupp is heading into his second season with the Seattle Seahawks after being cut by the Los Angeles Rams last year, but he still hasn't completely left Southern California or his former Rams teammates.
A new video from The Village, where several current and former Rams players work out, shows Kupp training with his good friend Puka Nacua. Both players are getting ready for their respective training camps, which begin later this month.
Kupp was a mentor to Nacua during their two seasons together with the Rams in 2023 and 2024, and it seems he's still maintaining that "big brother" role to the young receiver in L.A.

Ferran Torres' future at Barcelona has taken an unexpected turn following interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
The French and European champions are keen to sign the Barcelona attacker and have held positive talks with his camp.
Luis Enrique's admiration for Ferran is well known. The PSG manager was one of the strongest supporters of the forward during his time with the Spanish national team and remains convinced of his qualities.
Now, according to La Vanguardia, inside the Catalan club, the message regarding the 26-year-old forward is clear: either he renews his contract or he is sold.
Sources at Barcelona acknowledge that the club's preferred outcome is to extend Ferran's deal, which currently expires in 2027.

Liverpool have reportedly made a proposal for one Manchester City player. They hope to steal him this summer.
Liverpool are deep into their transfer business this summer, even if it doesn't quite feel like it. But the Reds have been at work for months trying to lock down their targets.
Of course, their top target was Yan Diomande and he'll be joining Paris Saint-Germain (or at least, he would like to) and that's put a real dampener on things. Liverpool have to pivot for someone new, even if they know that new target isn't exactly what they wanted.
For now, though, it seems the most-likely arrival will actually be for the future. Liverpool have their eyes on some of England's elite youth talent, hoping to recreate the magic of Rio Ngumoha.
One such player is Xavier Parker at Manchester City. The teenager is wanted by every major English club and he's thought to be one of the absolute best players in his age bracket.

LOS ANGELES — Having moved on from Pavin Smith, whom the Diamondbacks officially designated for ***** ignment on Friday afternoon, July 10, general manager Mike Hazen said he is on the lookout for help at first base, though he did not sound as if he expected anything to come together in the immediate future.
"I'm at the mercy of the market in some of those cases," Hazen said. "I can't really tell. At this point, given the amount of teams in the playoff races on both sides, I can't see the trade market heating up before the end of the month."
Hazen said he is looking into any type of potential fit — rentals, multiyear big leaguers, even younger players.
"We're exploring all those things," he said. "We are having all those conversations. But I have no idea where anything can land."
How their pursuit of a first baseman is impacted by their overall direction at the deadline remains to be seen. At 46-47 entering their July 10 game here against the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks were 5 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. They were tied with the San Diego Padres and would need to clear four other teams to be in playoff position.

Here is wide receiver Xavier Weaver.
Weaver enters his third NFL season and third with the Cardinals. He came into the league as an undrafted rookie out of Colorado in 2024. He made the active roster out of training camp and appeared it two games in 2024 as a rookie, playing 57 offensive snaps.
In 2025, he played in 10 games, catching seven passes for 67 yards. He also returned two kicks, averaging 25.5 yards. He played 272 snaps on offense and 23 on special teams.

New York Giants third-year wide receiver Malik Nabers is hoping to come back strong after tearing both his ACL and his meniscus in Week 4 last year, which ended his season.
At the moment, Nabers is still rehabbing, and the goal is to have him ready for the start of the regular season when the Giants host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, September 9.
Nabers could likely begin training camp, which begins in three weeks, on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as a precaution. If he's not 100 percent ready, the Giants will want options.
If he is ready, some believe he can have a monster season. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report recently named Nabers as a "dark horse" candidate for NFL Offensive Player of the Year, albeit the odds are steep (+4500).
With Wan'Dale Robinson taking his whopping 140 targets to the Tennessee ****** ans in free agency, the door is wide open for Nabers to average 10-plus looks a game and even eclipse the career-high 170 targets he amassed as a rookie in 2024.

Achraf Hakimi is, without a doubt, the biggest star Moroccan football has known. If Larbi Ben Barek, Noureddine Naybet and Yassine Bounou have all enjoyed the love and respect of football fans, Hakimi is on a whole other level of stardom. He's been consistent and successful among the very best teams of world football. After starting his career at Real Madrid, he has represented Borussia Dortmund, Inter and Paris St-Germain, where he won the Champions League for a first time in 2025. "I don't know if Luis Enrique changed my career," he said. "But his arrival has changed how the world of football sees me." In February it was announced that he will face trial after an allegation of rape was made against him. He vehemently denies the accusation.
One to watch
He only became a Moroccan international in September 2025 but Neil El Aynaoui is already considered one of the Atlas Lions' best players. Son of Moroccan tennis legend, Younes El Ayanoui, Neil is a multifunctional midfielder, very tough in recovering the ball and keen to join in the attacks. After a convincing stint at Lens, he joined Roma last summer and, despite the fans' initial scepticism and few appearances at the start of the season, the midfielder became an important player to Gian Piero Gasperini. If Morocco are to be successful in North America El Aynaoui will be an important piece of the jigsaw.
Unsung hero

As college sports enters Year 2 of the post-House settlement era, officials in the sport continue to call for stronger enforcement of NCAA rules. Washington athletics director Pat Chun was among those voices this week.
Chun's comments came as the Protect College Sports Act goes through the legislative process in the U.S. Senate. The Big Ten has made clear it does not support the bill in its current state, along with the SEC, but talks are expected to continue with the bipartisan legislation on track for the Senate floor.

In the meantime, Chun called for enforcement around settlement terms, as well as legal protection, alluding the Brendan Sorsby situation to make his point. But while ***** sing the economic side of college athletics in the NIL era, he said that's an area which needs more control.
"We've got to figure out how to have a workable economic environment," Chun told John Canzano. "This compensation to our athletes is critical. But we're over-leveraged in this environment by agents, we're over-leveraged by rumors and we're over-leveraged because everybody recognizes the need to win in football. There's no restraint.

The Utah Mammoth have matched the New Jersey Devils’ offer sheet of Barrett Hayton.
Hayton, 26, signed the offer sheet with the Devils on free agency day, two days after the Mammoth filed for team-elected arbitration.
The contract is worth $4.775 million. A total of $3,925,000 will be paid as a signing bonus — the maximum allowed for this particular contract. It carries a one-year term, putting Hayton on track to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Matching an offer sheet comes with a caveat: The team can’t trade the player for a full year from the day it matches. In Hayton’s case, the contract is only a year long, after which he becomes a UFA.
That means the Mammoth will not be allowed to trade Hayton unless he re-signs with them next year. His name has been in every trade rumor the last few years, but those will all go away now.

Lorenzo Pellegrini is waiting to sign a contract renewal with Roma.
An agreement with the Giallorossi club will need to be reached in the coming days, as the player is currently a free agent and is expected to arrive at Trigoria on July 13th for a training camp ahead of next season.
The Giallorossi number 7 is important to Gasperini, who has requested his continued presence, despite the expected arrival of two starters behind Malen. In short, his role within Roma could change.
The Roman midfielder’s agent, however, has had an initial meeting with D’Amico, and the parties are working towards a final agreement.
There’s still a gap between supply and demand, but Pellegrini is set to sign a contract with Roma.
