He lived for many years in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton where today a plaque was unveiled at his former home on Bower Road.

Hull FC winger Tom Briscoe has announced he will retire from playing at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old former England international started his career with the Black and Whites in 2008 and has scored 232 tries in 471 appearances to date.
He joined Leeds Rhinos for the 2014 season and won two Grand Finals and three Challenge Cups during his eight years there, before winning another Challenge Cup with Leigh Leopards in 2023.
Briscoe returned to Hull in April 2024 and has scored 17 tries in 64 games in his second stint.

Starting next year, some passengers flying internationally on a new United Airlines aircraft will have the option to book a seat with extra ****** e after the airline custom-designed seats to block some middle seats in its Economy Plus section.

The Tennessee ****** ans pulled out a come-from-behind victory over the Seattle Seahawks to close out Week 2 of the preseason, but it was not all fun and games.
The ****** ans' starters again had some hiccups, mostly against the Seahawks' second team. The defense was vanilla and gave up two big scoring plays over three series, and the offense sputtered under Cam Ward, managing only a single field goal over three drives.
While it was not a crisp outing, head coach Robert Saleh said he was pleased overall and is excited to see how they prepare for the final week of training camp.
Here is a quick report card on how the ****** ans fared against the defending Super Bowl champs.
The ****** ans' offense did do enough by the end to pull this one out, but it was not all smooth sailing. The starters struggled in their three series, managing only one field goal, but they looked a bit better than they did against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. Quarterback Cam Ward was better, although he did appear shaky and slightly inaccurate, especially trying to force the ball to first-round pick Carnell Tate, who remains catchless through two preseason games.

It already feels like quite some time ago, and yet it also still feels like it was only just a few weeks ago that Germany yet again floundered out of the World Cup far earlier than they should have. In Foxborough, Massachusetts, they fell to Paraguay in a penalty shootout after failing to get the job done in 90 minutes, but the writing was on the wall as they collectively failed to hit their heights throughout the entire tournament — starting off the group stages with a 7-1 trouncing of Curaçao in Houston, Texas probably didn't do wonders for keeping them on their toes.
Too many players underperformed, mid-match management calls and tactical changes might not have been right, but what's done is done and Germany can now ride a wave of anticipation and excitement into Jürgen Klopp's reign as Die Mannschaft manager, as the former Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz man took over for Julian Nagelsmann. The DFB more or less strongly urged Nagelsmann to resign after the World Cup, but was he really to blame for everything that went wrong for Germany, or was he just the easiest scapegoat to point at? For former/honorary Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß, the problems with the team extended well beyond Nagelsmann.
"I think our team's performance was an absolute disaster. It was a disgrace for our country. But there are various reasons for that. Enough has already been said about Julian Nagelsmann. I don't think he is solely to blame. We don't have a team of outstanding quality, but you can still have a good World Cup. Argentina proved that. They don't have a good team, but they threw everything into it like crazy. That's what I felt was missing from our team," Hoeneß recently stressed to RTL / Sky Germany (via iMiaSanMia).
Of course, Argentina made it to the final in East Rutherford, New Jersey where they lost to Spain, but a great portion of their campaign was a massive topic of discussions for the way in which they were given a plethora of favorable calls in different matches and getting away with blatant, persistent fouling.
That's not to say that the Argentine squad doesn't possess the grit, fight, and tenacity within the laws of the game that routinely gets them to the latter stages of World Cups, but there certainly questions raised; why didn't Lionel Messi get a red vs. Saudi Arabia, why was Egypt's 3rd goal disallowed, why didn't anyone get booked early on vs. England? All legitimate questions asked, but for Hoeneß, he doesn't see that type of fight from Germany that Argentina almost always displays.

It's showtime again in Chicago. Patrick Kane is back where it all began, signing a 2-year contract to likely finish his career as a Blackhawk.
Reactions were mixed, but most Blackhawks fans were thrilled to see him back where he belongs. The $8 million cap hit raised concerns, and many hockey fans were surprised by the high number. Regardless, the team has the cash, and they used it on a player whose value transcends the ice.
The truth is, Kane might be more of a business decision than a hockey decision. With Connor Bedard out to start the season, Kane will get fans at the United Center through the opening chapter of the year. Even after a lackluster offseason headlined by their star's injury, this signing alone has Blackhawks buzz at a recent high. Fans are excited, and the team should keep filling the United Center.
Of course, that doesn't mean Kane won't improve the team's overall quality. Had Kane played for the Blackhawks last year, he would have been third in total points and fourth in goals. Even playing just 67 games, Kane would have been an important offensive contributor. On August 13, Abeona Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ABEO) reported second-quarter results that captured a company scaling a genuinely new kind of medicine while working through the ***** ps that come with it. ZEVASKYN, its cell therapy for a severe skin disease called recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, brought in $11.4 million in revenue for the quarter, and the number of patients treated kept rising. But the call also laid out cancellations, manufacturing hiccups, and a shift in how the company plans to report its own progress, all within the same three months.
Revenue climbed 31%, or $2.7 million, to $11.4 million from $8.7 million in the first quarter of 2026. Abeona has now treated 12 patients since ZEVASKYN's launch, including five in the second quarter and three more in the third quarter to date. The treatment center network grew alongside that, reaching seven activated sites with the recent addition of Cincinnati Children's, one of the largest epidermolysis bullosa treatment hubs in the country. New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia also came online during the quarter, and CHOP moved fast, completing its first treatment in July just months after activating in May. UTMB, meanwhile, finished its first patient biopsy. Roughly 40% of the addressable patient population now has in-state access to a qualified treatment center.
Abeona also picked up a new technology add-on payment from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, effective Oct. 1, 2026, for fiscal year 2027, making it one of only three approvals out of 15 new applications that cycle. On the cost side, R&D spending fell to $5 million from $9.6 million, which had included a one-time $7 million licensing payment, and SG&A dropped to $15.8 million from $19.5 million. The company closed the quarter with $146.8 million in cash and short-term investments.
The net loss widened to $20.2 million, or $0.35 per share, from $17.1 million, or $0.30 per share, in the first quarter. Of the five patients treated in the second quarter, only four generated recognized revenue, because one batch's cell yield came in below the threshold required for recognition. Management pointed to ZEVASKYN's 84-hour shelf life as a core operational challenge, since it forces dermatologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and hospital staff to lock in exact dates well ahead of time. That rigidity showed up directly in the numbers: two scheduled biopsies were canceled at the last minute in the second quarter after patients' health unexpectedly declined, and because those slots had been booked so far in advance, they could not be filled by another patient.

Fans' groups worldwide have launched a petition calling for the resignation of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president and for wholesale reform of the organization.
Infantino is under pressure after being forced to abandon plans to seek private investment in a company to run FIFA tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cups.
Three continental confederations accused Infantino of "deception" in an open letter last week over the manner in which the plan was devised and presented, with European football's governing body UEFA still intent on boycotting FIFA events having "lost confidence" in Infantino's leadership.
The Swiss does still retain support, notably in Africa and South America, but now fans' organizations have called on him to step down, with a petition being launched on the change.org website.
"The shameful attempt by one individual – the FIFA president himself – to sell off the World Cup to private investors exposed a betrayal football will never forget," a statement on behalf of the fan organizations said.

During those years, he played a leading role in unforgettable triumphs such as the record-breaking 1988/89 Scudetto, followed by the Supercoppa Italiana and two UEFA Cups, in 1991 and 1994, firmly establishing his place in Inter's history. Since July 2022, he has served as First Team Club Manager, continuing his long-standing connection with the Nerazzurri colours.
