Initial reports about San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan claimed he was not at fault for the car crash that occurred on July 14.
According to the California Crash Reporting System database — Case ID 5249308 — Shanahan was allegedly holding and using his cell phone prior to the crash. Still, Shanahan was not considered at fault. It was determined that the 21-year-old woman driving made an unsafe turn, which resulted in the crash. Both airbags were deployed.
The state of California prohibits holding and operating a cell phone while driving, according to Vehicle Code 23123.5(a), but Shanahan was not cited.
Chris Simms said he received pictures from Kyle's wife, Mandy. Simms said, "He was this close to maybe losing his right eye. The scar is so big right here. And he's still battling with this concussion. He's healing. His face looks a whole lot better, but this concussion, of course, being part of that kind of accident, is lingering, and it's giving him issues."

One of the best French soccer players of all time will lead the country's men's national team moving forward. Zinedine Zidane was named the new head coach of the club Tuesday.
Zidane, 54, signed a four-year deal with the team.
Zidane has a lot to live up to in the role. France has been one of the best performers in recent World Cups. Prior to finishing in fourth place this year, the team finished as runners-up in 2022 and won it all in 2018.
The team's head coach during that span, Didier Deschamps, announced prior to the 2026 World Cup that it would be his last one with the team, paving the way for Zidane to take over.

On the back of promising performances in pre-season friendlies against York City and Liverpool, Régis Le Bris is going to have a midfield selection dilemma ahead of the new season.
Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki all showed their class at the World Cup, with Sadiki and Diarra standing out — Diarra bagging a couple of goals for Senegal and Sadiki shining in DR Congo's defeat to England in the round of sixteen.
Whilst these lads are currently on holiday and enjoying a well-deserved break after successful World Cup campaigns, there's an opportunity afoot for other lads to work their way into Le Bris' thinking going into the opening game against Ipswich Town.
Chris Rigg and Enzo Le Fée have been deployed in central positions during our two pre-season fixtures and have been standout performers. Rigg has clearly been on a fitness programme over the summer and has come back a couple of pounds stronger, whereas Le Fée has picked up where he left off at the back end of last season, scoring a fantastic solo strike against Liverpool on Saturday night.
The few games that we played last season without Xhaka in the starting eleven showed just how much we struggle without him, and although he's a certainty to be the first name on the team sheet most weeks, he's coming into the twilight of his career and will not be able to play up to potentially fifty games if we have a successful season.

Former Manchester City captain Paul Lake hopes Jack Grealish will be "given an opportunity" under new manager Enzo Maresca, as he believes the left winger brings "great attitude and personality".
The club triggered a £100m release clause to prise Grealish away from boyhood club Aston Villa in August 2021. Since then, he has won three Premier Leagues, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup at Eithad Stadium.
However, after dropping out of Pep Guardiola's starting XI, the 30-year-old joined Everton on a season-long loan for the 2025-26 campaign in search of first-team minutes.
Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester, Lake said: "There is no reason why it can't happen. All of these players have got their own egos.
"Jack Grealish will say: 'Of course I can play in that team, I've done it before and I can do it again.' He does bring something different. He has experience, so he can deliver in high-pressure moments.

Grassroots sports clubs across Shropshire say they are struggling to keep their pitches alive because of the hot, dry weather.
Telford Hornets Rugby Club are one of many who said the pitches they play on are dying because spending to irrigate would cost them thousands of pounds, money which they do not have.
Since 15 June, most of England has recorded less than 10mm of rain, which has meant many clubs are praying for a sustained downpour.
The club's chairman, Neil Thomas, said they have had to learn strategies to keep their pitches in as good condition as possible, so they can continue playing on them.
As many sport teams return from their off-season, players are faced with the prospect of playing on hardened pitches, which physiotherapists say increase the chances of soft tissue injuries.

Donald Trump hosted the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House on Thursday for the team's second trip to the White House in two years.
The team gave the president a custom jersey and a World Series championship ring during a ceremony at the Rose Garden. Four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani, star first baseman Freddie Freeman, World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and manager Dave Roberts were among those in attendance, while several players – most notably star shortstop Mookie Betts and utility man Kike Hernández – opted not to attend.

"Special winners, unbelievable," Trump said. "I would not be surprised to see them back here again."

He made a lengthy comparison between Ohtani and legendary slugger Babe Ruth, and praised Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers ace who pitched an inning of last year's epic World Series Game 3 win over the Blue Jays in 18 innings.

The Tottenham defender would make sense for Manchester United, as their wingback department took a hit when Tyrell Malacia walked at the beginning of the window, leaving Michael Carrick down a man in his backline. While Malacia was primarily used as a left-back, and Spence is usually slotted in the right-back spot for the Lilywhites, he is capable of playing on both sides of the pitch.

They won game one of their doubleheader on Wednesday to tie the franchise record winning streak, 15 in a row, originally set in 1946. They couldn't take the nightcap, so this 2026 ballclub will go down in history as tied with the bunch from 1946.
But when anyone thinks back on this stretch of play, it won't matter whether the streak was 15 games versus 14 or 16.

Inter Miami on Wednesday announced the signing of Brazil star Casemiro but Major League Soccer immediately said it was investigating allegations of tampering by the club over the deal.
Casemiro, who has 91 caps for Brazil and won five Champions League ****** les with Real Madrid, was a free agent after Manchester United opted not to renew his contract following a mixed four-year stint at the Premier League giants.
The veteran 34-year-old midfielder opted to join Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul at Inter Miami, which is co-owned by David Beckham.
"Casemiro's arrival reflects the vision and ambition that define Inter Miami. We never settle. We're always looking to grow, improve, and raise our standards every season," said Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas.

The R&A on Wednesday named Adam Scott the recipient of the inaugural Spirit of Golf Award.
The R&A introduced the award to recognize an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the game on a global scale and displays the values, behaviors and traditions inherent to golf. The announcement was made Wednesday during the R&A press conference ahead of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
"I am honored to be the first recipient of the new R&A Spirit of Golf Award.
"As someone who has spent my entire life in the game of golf, it is so meaningful to be recognized for my impact on golf across the world, not only from a playing point of view but for also upholding values which are so integral to the sport," Scott said. "I've thoroughly enjoyed playing in 100 consecutive major championships. It has been a privilege and is something I'll never take for granted. I look forward to continuing that run at Royal Birkdale this week for The 154th Open."

Didier Deschamps' long, storied career with France will come to an end not how he would have wanted it - in Saturday's World Cup third-place play-off.
The dreams of the 57-year-old, who won the World Cup as both a player (in 1998) and a manager (in 2018), winning it a third time are over after their 2-0 defeat by Spain in Tuesday's first semi-final.
Having danced their way through the tournament with a series of impressive attacking displays, France managed just 10 shots all match in Dallas, their lowest total in the World Cup, with an expected goals of just 0.3 as they belied their pre-match tag of overwhelming favourites.
Former France midfielder Patrick Viera told ITV: "They haven't shown up. I was expecting more. There was a big expectations for France to win the World Cup.
"France will all disappointed by the result and the performance. All our top players went missing. Collectively we were really bad."

The reaction to the signing of a 10th man should be near silence, but New York celebrates a key return of a piece of the championship team. Last week, Jordan Clarkson agreed to the veteran minimum with the Knicks, which keeps adding depth to a group that was able to separate themselves from the competition with their volume of talent.
The interesting part about the story of Clarkson is that he is the embodiment of sacrifice for a team that had several players willing to play whatever the team ultimately asked of them. Walking into the season Clarkson was destined to play behind Brunson and enhance a bench that had a tendency to frustrate with stagnancy. Under Tom Thibodeau it was customary for the bench to feel underwhelming and underutilized.
Clarkson came into the season with plenty of talent and accolades— he won the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2020-21 and he has averaged over 15 points per game in his career. Yet, Knicks fans may also have been a little hesitant of his arrival based on the game that the Utah Jazz had played against the New York Knicks during the 2024-25 season where his shot selection was lightly criticized by Mike Breen.
He proved his worth to the Knicks in several different ways over the past season. There are a few things that will be highly valuable to continue to showcase in order for him to maintain a consistent role in the rotation.

Longtime Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney admits college football is facing plenty of challenges, but those issues haven't changed his desire to remain on the sidelines.
During an interview with national radio host Dan Sileo, Swinney was asked whether he has ever considered following Nick Saban's path and stepping away from coaching because of the sport's rapidly changing landscape. Swinney quickly dismissed the idea, saying the current environment is exactly why experienced coaches are needed.
"No. Things always change. But to me, now is the time where we need leadership. These kids need leadership," Swinney said.
Swinney acknowledged that college football is dealing with a lack of structure, comparing it to "a ship that's just kinda drifting in the high seas." While he believes there's never been a better time to be a college football player, he also said it's never been more difficult for athletes to navigate everything that comes with the modern game.
Rather than dwelling on those concerns, Swinney said he remains focused on what Clemson can control. He pointed to the program's graduation and retention rates while emphasizing that developing young men has always been his biggest motivation.

This week, Philadelphia will host its first All-Star Game in thirty years, and a local artist got to cement himself as part of its history.
Andre Chaney created the All-Star themed bell, which can now be seen at the ballpark.
In collaboration with "Bells Across PA," it is one of many fiberglass statues placed in the region to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
The project was in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia and is ***** led "America's Summer Tradition."
Five Phillies legends were painted onto the piece, all who participated in previous All-Star games: ***** Allen, Mike Schmidt, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Bryce Harper.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Mariners are telling teams they will be open to trading from their "prized starters" this summer, especially Luis Castillo, to land one of two things: a right-handed hitter and a high-end reliever.
"The Seattle Mariners are letting teams know that they are willing to trade one of their prized starters for a back-end reliever and right-handed hitter, most likely Luis Castillo," Nightengale writes.

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr is attracting interest from Como, with the Serie A side intensifying direct contact to sign the player, per Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Blues will likely be open to a deal, as the Senegalese star has struggled to nail down a starting spot at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea signed the 20-year-old from sister club Strasbourg and brought him to West London in January when they needed a solution to their injury and defensive woes.
Unfortunately, he struggled to get going under then Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior and interim manager Calum McFarlane.
While he reads the game well enough on the ground, he is not particularly imposing enough and struggles in the air.

Such is the nature of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, or EYBL for short. The thousands of kids scrimmaging nonstop throughout the day — surrounded by the flurry of activity from parents, scouts, agents and onlookers in between the individual courts — almost make him a secondary figure, allowing him to escape attention.
It’s a much harder task pulling that off at his day job. Banchero, a 6-foot-10 forward entering his fifth year in the NBA, is approaching a pivotal point in his young career. His style of play, a high-usage offensive engine unto himself — with a high motor, processing speed and unique skillset for someone his size — is hopeful of meshing seamlessly with a new head coach. Sean Sweeney, a former ***** istant coach under Mitch Johnson in San Antonio, joined the Orlando Magic following the Finals, looking to take the organization further forward than what his predecessor, Jamahl Mosley, could.
The underlying Banchero question has always been how to marry his versatility with his surroundings, all while producing efficient play. Advanced ***** ytics paint a wide-ranging picture of Banchero’s overall impact, as metrics can be influenced by ***** ing (personnel choices), tactics and strategy. Banchero ranks 97th in LEBRON, 146th in DARKO, 141st in LAKER and 56th in Player Efficiency Rating. Last season was the first, according to Cleaning the Glass, that the Magic weren’t a net negative with Banchero on the floor (Orlando was -17 in his playoff minutes, but was also -19 with him on the bench versus Detroit.)
Orlando is blessed with an abundance of additional playmakers — Jalen Sugs, Desmond Bane and Anthony Black are all capable of creation — but Banchero’s ***** ist rate, combined with how often he possesses the ball in the frontcourt, warrant additional conversations between Banchero and Sweeney for how to improve the Magic’s output.

It's the biggest day in amateur baseball, as hundreds of high school and college players wait to hear their name in the 2026 MLB Draft in Philadelphia.

As the buzz keeps building, ESPN put its 2026 NFL roster rankings together. Detroit garnered great respect, checking in with the league's sixth-best roster according to ESPN.
That's in line with NFL.com's post-draft roster rankings, where Eric Edholm also ranked the Lions' roster as the NFL's sixth-best.
Per ESPN's 2026 rankings, only the Los Angeles Rams (No. 1), Philadelphia Eagles (No. 2), Seattle Seahawks (No. 3), Buffalo Bills (No. 4) and Baltimore Ravens (No. 5) have better rosters than the Lions.

Max Holloway completed his transformation to welterweight as he prepares to face Conor McGregor in a rematch at UFC 329 on Saturday.
Holloway has campaigned at featherweight for the majority of his 36-fight career but makes his debut at welterweight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Ed Sheeran has paid a visit to the England World Cup football camp, continuing a tradition that started in 2021.
An Instagram video shared on Thursday shows the British pop star visiting the players at team camp in Kansas City, Missouri, and greeting people with hugs.
"In 2021, Harry (Kane) got me down for the camp, and I met everyone, and I've just been to every one ever since," Sheeran said of the England captain. "We bonded."
The video also shows the artist singing his song Castle on the Hill for the players on an acoustic guitar.
Sheeran expressed his belief that England could win the tournament, saying, "Anyone can win, and I think it'll be us."
England next play Norway on Saturday. The World Cup Final on 19 July will feature a halftime show starring Coldplay, Justin Bieber, BTS, Madonna and Shakira.

The Houston Texans have spent the past few NFL seasons lying to us. Lying to their fans. And they're right back at it as camp 2026 looms in the not-so-distant future. They continue to put a lot of faith back into C.J. Stroud. And they shouldn't. Stroud still has the talent that made Houston believe it had found a franchise quarterback. His rookie season created a standard that was not fake. He can process, throw with touch, and control a game when he is comfortable. But the last two seasons have made the conversation more complicated than the Texans probably want to admit.

At some point, Houston has to stop talking about what Stroud was and deal honestly with what he has been. The production has dipped. The pocket presence has not looked the same. The offensive line problems were real, and the Texans have spent this offseason trying to fix them. That's not insignificant. No quarterback is at his best when he can't trust the protection in front of him.
But that cannot be the entire explanation. Stroud has had chances to steady the offense and did not always do it. His playoff performance against New England was the clearest warning sign, with four interceptions and a completion rate that told the same story as the film. He looked rushed. Uncomfortable. He looked far removed from the calm rookie quarterback who made everything feel ahead of schedule. And that is the issue.

One ESPN commentator has suggested that the WNBA has found what they were looking for in Caitlin Clark through the play of Paige Bueckers.
Caitlin Clark has been the most popular since she arrived in the WNBA in 2024, after two sensational seasons with the University of Iowa.
However, she hasn't made the kind of impact the WNBA were hoping for, with Paige Bueckers being backed as the next face of the league by one ******* yst.
Speaking on ESPN, NFL ******* yst Harry Douglas gave his thoughts on the WNBA, and the form of the Dallas Wings in particular.
He noted that Paige Bueckers has been the kind of game-changing star that many expected Caitlin Clark to be when she entered the WNBA.

Clark finished with 9 points in 16 minutes in her return from a two-game absence due to a back injury.
Coming into the game, Clark averaged 21.2 points, 8.2 ***** ists and 4.0 rebounds per game, making 43.0% of her field goals, 34.4% of her 3-pointers and 85.4% of her free throws.

Rutgers has a pretty good wrestling program. Its rowing program is nationally ranked, and has been for several years. There are other sports “on the banks” that have also been reasonably successful in recent years: men’s golf, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, gymnastics.
And they’ve done well, despite the fact that they haven’t necessarily gotten the support – financially or otherwise – that they need. But Keli Zinn has made it clear that those poor support days are over.
“Our absence in that ****** e [NIL]. Over the past three or four years, I do believe it has had a direct impact on where you see some of our Olympic sports performing right now. We needed to fix that, and our Olympic coaches heard back in the fall, me tell them, hey, this isn’t just about football and basketball, it’s going to be about you too.”
In honor of this year’s World Cup games, Andrew posted a piece on Rutgers Soccer – men and women – showing a proud and highly successful history. The operative word being history, as in not recently.
And, as often happens, reality can smack you up side the head: that would be the Directors’ Cup standings for 2025-26. And it showed that of late, Rutgers just hasn’t quite cut it in too many areas.
