The president said the defense secretary is "doing a great job."
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth would remain on the job, even as he acknowledged that the war with Iran had contributed to Republicans' sweeping midterm losses and as Democrats prepare to use their new congressional majority to potentially investigate the Pentagon chief.
Trump dismissed the possibility of replacing Hegseth, telling reporters he was "doing a great job." When asked about speculation that Hegseth is eyeing Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn's soon-to-be-vacated Tennessee seat, Trump predicted the defense secretary would be "very popular" in the state.
Blackburn, who won Tennessee's gubernatorial race Tuesday, declined to weigh in on who might be picked to fill her Senate seat. Asked about who would be appointed, she said, "It's not a conversation for today."
Trump's remarks come as Republicans grapple with the political fallout from the eight-month war with Iran, which has driven up gas prices and fueled voter frustration over the cost of living. The war and its economic consequences are widely seen as a major factor in Republicans' crushing midterm defeat.

Midterms tend to be backlash elections, and the president's party almost always loses seats when voters return to the polls to judge his performance in office.
But not all midterms are created equal.
On Tuesday, Democrats comprehensively routed their Republican rivals, regaining control of the U.S. House, U.S. Senate and statehouses across the country. Along the way, they shattered a series of decades-long Republican winning streaks and notched several historic firsts.
So just how big was this year's blue wave (or "blue tsunami")?
The full scale and scope of the Democratic Party's seismic victory is still coming into focus as officials tally every last vote. But here are some key numbers to help you put it into perspective:

Tesla (TSLA) and **** eX (SPCX) stock fell on Wednesday after Democrats took control of both houses of Congress in a "Blue Wave" that flipped Texas, home to both companies, with potential implications for CEO Elon Musk.
Musk spent $224 million backing Texas Republicans, including $158 million in September alone, per The New York Times, part of at least $446 million he gave to Republican candidates and groups before the vote. Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Gov. Greg Abbott to become the first Democratic governor of Texas since 1990, and Democrat James Talarico beat Republican Ken Paxton for the Senate seat.
Tesla and **** eX both dropped by over 2% despite the broad market rally, which includes Big Tech.
"Both of these stocks have major headline risk if we get a blue sweep," Vikram Rai of FirstNew York told Bloomberg ahead of the election.

WASHINGTON (AP) — At the urging of President Donald Trump, Republicans in eight states redrew the boundaries of dozens of congressional districts over the past year while angling for an edge that could help them hold onto a slim House majority in a tough midterm election.
Ultimately, it didn't work.
Republicans lost most of the Democratic-held seats they had targeted to flip, lost others they had banked on retaining and got swept out of power by a Democratic surge fueled by voter dissatisfaction with Trump, the economy and the war with Iran.
The Republican redistricting plan fell flat in Alabama, Florida and Texas. It got scuttled by courts in Missouri and then firmly defeated by its voters Tuesday. And it got offset in California, where a retaliatory Democratic redistricting flipped all five of the Republican-held seats it targeted.
"This is a catastrophic rebuke of Donald Trump's failed effort to gerrymander the country into oblivion to save the U.S. House of Representatives for himself," John Bisognano, president of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, said Wednesday.

President Donald Trump spent two months urging Americans to pretend he was on the ballot. On Tuesday, they did just that.
Voters delivered a stunning rebuke to Trump's party that rivaled anything Republicans had suffered in 50 years, defeats on ruby-red turf that Trump won handily just two years ago, where he has dominated politics for nearly a decade and against candidates he had in some cases handpicked.

Not only did Democrats flip Senate and governor seats in red states, but at times by eye-popping margins.
"The message is very clear and very simple here. It was a complete repudiation of the party as defined by Donald Trump," said Mike Murphy, a Los Angeles-based Republican consultant who worked for candidates in the pre-Trump GOP, including Jeb Bush and John McCain.

Democrats retook power in Washington on Tuesday, flipping key House and Senate seats to command majorities in both chambers of Congress.
The power shift creates a new platform for Democrats to launch investigations of President Trump's economic allies — Elon Musk, to name one — and pass bills that may be unlikely to become law but will mark a sharp change in the political climate for business leaders and economic issues after two years of unified Republican control.
The change also appears set to elevate figures like Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others to prominent positions with oversight over economic policy.

Democrats are planning "a shock-and-awe legislative sprint," the New York Times reported, on issues like healthcare subsidies and Trump's tariffs, which could prompt a wave of bills to pass the House but stall against the 60-vote threshold in the Senate. Even in the minority, Senate rules mean Republicans retain the power to stop legislation.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson told staff on Wednesday morning that he would not run for minority leader after Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections, two sources familiar with the announcement said.
Johnson handily won reelection to his Louisiana congressional district. But members of his party lost across the country on an election night that will put Democrats in the majority in the House and Senate in the next legislative session.
Among the likely contenders to try to replace Johnson as House leader are fellow Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the current majority leader, and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the current House Judiciary Committee chairman.
A person familiar with situation said Johnson did not want to get in the way of Scalise's ambitions. Scalise previously ran for speaker in 2023 but dropped out after he was unable to consolidate Republican support. Johnson went on to become speaker of the House.
Some previous speakers have resigned their seats after stepping down, but Johnson is not expected to resign from Congress, a second person familiar with his thinking said. Johnson joked before the midterm election that he could return to his hometown of Shreveport and start a lawn-mowing business if Republicans were defeated. He later said it was a "tongue in cheek" comment.

With mere hours left on Election Night before polling closes across America, traders on prediction market platform Polymarket are forecasting an 89% chance (as of 7 p.m. ET) that Democrats sweep and retake both the House of Representatives and the Senate. For context, Republicans enter the midterms with 218 of 435 House seats and 53 of 100 Senate seats.
The potential implications of midterm elections on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) are massive. If a "blue wave" does unfold, things could get dicey, at least over the short run, for a historically expensive stock market.

Everyone is saying the same thing about Prince George.
The future king was spotted in Spain with father Prince William on Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the royals took to their seats to watch their beloved soccer team Aston Villa take on Barcelona. Both donned dark, casual clothing for the match which took place amid heavy rainfall.
Royal watchers swiftly took to social media to comment on how grown up George, who turned 13 in July, looked.
"Prince George looks like a young man! He is growing up so quickly," read one of many posts on X. "Cannot believe how tall Prince George is getting," read another.
Photos taken of George at royal events over the summer show that the prince is almost the same height as mom, Princess Kate, who is 5 feet, 9 inches. Now, he appears to be catching up to his father, who is 6 feet, 3 inches.

Democrats have regained control of Congress, winning back the U.S. House and Senate as Republican midterm losses mount.
Coming into the night, Republicans held 53 of the Senate's 100 seats, compared with 45 held by Democrats. To wrest back control of the Senate, Democrats needed a net gain of at least four seats. As at 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the Democrats had won 54 Senate seats to the GOP's 44.
Democrats won a series of key Senate seats. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in one of the most closely watched races. James Talarico beat Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, becoming the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in the Lone Star State since 1988.
Annie Andrews beat GOP Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina to flip a Senate seat. In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins, putting an end to her three-decade tenure. Sen. Jon Ossoff comfortably won reelection in Georgia. Other Senate seats to flip to the Democratic Party included Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Sherrod Brown in Ohio.
In the 435-seat House, the GOP held 218 seats, compared with 214 held by Democrats. To retake control of the House, Democrats needed a net gain of three seats — and the AP said early Wednesday that the party had exceeded that figure.

It was a blue wave big enough to become a blue tsunami.
On Tuesday, the Democratic Party shattered a series of decades-long Republican winning streaks, notched several historic firsts and flipped both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives as Americans in states and districts that voted to reelect President Trump just two years ago delivered a harsh judgment on the steep tariffs, rising gas prices, aggressive immigration raids and unresolved war in Iran that have so far dominated his second term.
"We didn't win this race by alienating our neighbors or shaming our neighbors or ridiculing our neighbors," Democrat James Talarico said after winning the Senate election in Texas. "We embodied a new kind of politics. A politics rooted in a deep love for our state, for our country and, most importantly, for all of our neighbors."
U.S. Sen.-elect James Talarico speaks during a midterm election night event at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 3, 2026, in Austin, Texas.
Votes were still being tallied and key races remained uncalled as Election Day came to an end. But as of 1 a.m. ET on Wednesday, when the last polls closed in Alaska, Democrats were projected to gain more than three dozen seats in the House and as many as nine seats in the Senate — far beyond the three and four seats, respectively, that they needed to retake each chamber. They were also on track to win the majority of governorships for the first time since 2011.

Quenton Nelson knows how hard it is to block Jeffery Simmons. When Nelson was a guard for the Colts and Simmons was a defensive tackle for the **** ans, the two played against each other 13 times. And when Nelson got traded to the Seahawks on Tuesday, he thought he was going to get a break from facing Simmons.
That didn't happen. Shortly after Nelson got traded to the Seahawks, Simmons got traded to the Bears. Who play the Seahawks on Monday night, in the first game for both players on their new teams.
Nelson said he considers Simmons one of the best opponents he's faced, and he's ready for a big challenge when the Bears visit Seattle on Monday night.
"He's an amazing football player and competitor. I was like, Man, can't get away from this guy. It'll be another battle against him this week," Nelson said.
Nelson vs. Simmons will be the most-watched offensive lineman vs. defensive lineman battle of this NFL season, as two All-Pros go at it again, now on new teams with Super Bowl aspirations.

Son Heung-min will make his MLS postseason debut after helping the Los Angeles Football Club clinch a playoff bid.
Los Angeles FC clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs after a 2-2 draw with the LA Galaxy on Sunday, Oct. 25, reaching the postseason for the eighth time in the franchise's nine-year history.
"We still got two more games to play in the regular season," Heung-min said of LAFC's fight for playoff positioning. "We want to finish as high as possible so we can have a home game as many times as possible."
LAFC have 47 points and trail the San Jose Earthquakes and the Houston Dynamo by one point in the standings, and will face Minnesota United on Nov. 1 and the Seattle Sounders on Nov. 7.
Heung-min believes the black and gold missed an opportunity to tie San Jose in the standings after an offside call against teammate Denis Bouanga in the 29th minute of the first half resulted in his apparent goal being called back.

CLEVELAND — Jose Ramirez rescued the Guardians in the American League Division Series with a tremendous three-game run to lift Cleveland to the ALCS, but with their playoff journey coming to an end all the focus turns to an injury that hamstrung him for the second half of the season.
Ramirez underwent hamate bone surgery in mid-June and returned to the lineup July 22, but he was struggling to be as productive while playing through the left wrist/hand issue. It can often be difficult for hitters to fully return to form in the aftermath of a hamate bone surgery.
His season numbers had already been a bit down from his career averages, but after the procedure he hit just .229 with a .598 OPS over the final 53 games, a stretch that included only two home runs, as his power seemed to be sapped.
It was painfully clear Ramirez was playing while hurt and the procedure was having a negative impact. It was also unlikely he'd do further damage, and the Guardians appreciated anything the star third baseman might be able to give them. A one-handed Ramirez is still a better sight in the everyday lineup than calling someone off the bench, especially as he insisted to play every day.
"I mean, obviously, it took a toll on him," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, who also reiterated his commitment to Cleveland while some rumors about the Seattle Mariners had stated to run rampant. "He was out there giving us everything he had. He wasn't playing at 100 percent, but that never changed his demeanor or the way he went about his business. And I think that just speaks to who he is as a person and a baseball player.

UW and Nebraska face off in Lincoln this weekend for the first time as conference foes. The long and storied history between the two teams stretches exactly 101 years and two weeks to the day between the very first match up in 1925 and this Saturday's game. That shared history primarily revolves around the four games played during the 1990s when both programs were at their peak. The 1991 game featured a furious second half comeback in Lincoln that built the momentum towards UW's eventual national championship. The Cornhuskers' return trip to Seattle in 1992 set the stage for the loudest recorded home crowd in college football history. Five years later, Nebraska returned to Montlake to get their revenge for the previous two games while on their way to their own national championship in 1997 in Tom Osborne's final season.
For these two programs, the current stakes of this weekend's game are much lower, although not entirely without significance. Both Washington and Nebraska enter Saturday night's matchup at a crossroads in their seasons. Nebraska sits at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play, but the Cornhuskers are coming off consecutive close losses to Indiana and Oregon. Despite those defeats, Matt Rhule's team has established itself as one of the league's most physical and statistically dominant defenses, keeping every game within reach through disciplined play, strong linebacker action, and excellent situational defense.
Washington, meanwhile, is 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Huskies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-26 victory over Purdue before their bye week and arrive in Lincoln needing momentum to salvage their Big Ten campaign. Jedd Fisch's offense remains heavily dependent on its passing attack, ranking among the conference's better aerial units, but questions at quarterback and a struggling rushing offense persist.
Over Matt Rhule's four years at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers have embraced a physical and gritty, defensive-oriented identity as a program. Under first-year defensive coordinator, Rob Aurich, Nebraska has maintained the aggressive, fundamentally sound identity Nebraska built under Rhule. The Cornhuskers rank 14th nationally in scoring defense, 9th in total defense, and are holding opponents to just 171 passing yards and 99 rushing yards per game on average. Their suffocating rushing defense on early downs often position them in 3rd & long passing situations where they pressure packages and blanketing secondary can create plays. This formula is what has allowed Nebraska to lead the FBS in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage at just 19%. To put that statistic into perspective, Nebraska's defense has allowed just eight third down conversions in their four Big Ten conference games this season, including games with just one allowed against Maryland and Indiana.
Nebraska typically operates from a multiple-front structure, mixing even-front and odd-front looks while emphasizing gap discipline and disgui

The NFL, the most parity-driven major sports league, feels even more wide open this year. Even the perceived powerhouses entering the season and teams with the best records have flaws that are already being picked at by opponents.
Betting markets and bettors are keeping plenty of teams alive. As of Thursday evening, FanDuel had 11 NFC teams with +164 or shorter odds to make the playoffs, and seven teams with +1100 odds or shorter to win the Super Bowl. Thirteen teams were at +2500 or shorter to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February.
This open competition leads to opportunity. And opportunity leads to action. Even when the Nov. 10 trade deadline was still a ways away, teams started to address their weaknesses. The Dallas Cowboys added Joey Porter Jr., the Baltimore Ravens nabbed Cam Jurgens. Now with the deadline growing closer, NFL teams have decided to strike. First, Quenton Nelson was shipped off to the Seattle Seahawks from the sinking ship known as the Indianapolis Colts. Soon after, DeForest Buckner returned to the San Francisco 49ers to bolster their defensive front.
Then, on Thursday, the Chicago Bears fired a shot across the bow to the rest of the NFC and NFL, trading two future first-round draft picks and a fourth-rounder to the Tennessee ****** ans for defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and a 2028 fifth-round selection.
Now that's some real action for a trade deadline!

Seattle Seahawks RB Jadarian Price (chest) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 29.
SOURCE: Seahawks.com
Why it Matters: Price has a chance to return to action Monday night, but with Zach Charbonnet (knee) potentially making his debut and Emanuel Wilson and George Holani also in the mix, it is going to be hard to know which Seattle back to trust. Fantasy owners with more reliable options should probably shy away from the Seattle backfield until a pecking order becomes better established.

Thursday night's primetime matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers had a unplanned pause during the third quarter. With the Packers holding the ball while leading 20-10, the game was interrupted for several minutes as a result of a passing drone, according to the Amazon Prime broadcast.
The unauthorized drone had breached the edge of the stadium, leading the referees to pause the game for safety reasons. Per the broadcast, the teams were told to head back to their respective sidelines while they waited for the drone to leave, with the delay lasting several minutes.
Under Federal Aviation Admisitration (FAA) rules, drones are not allowed within three nautical miles of any stadium with more than 30,000 seats, with NFL games specifically mentioned in the guidelines; Green Bay's Lambeau Field has a capacity of 81,441. The rules for drones and model airplanes apply starting one hour before the game until one hour after.
Luckily, the Packers made sure the delay was worth it: On the very next play, quarterback Jordan Love found Josh Jacobs for a touchdown reception to give Green Bay a 27-10 lead.
This story will be updated.

Yamaha has locked in its Moto2 line-up for 2027, signing Moto3 standout Álvaro Carpe to join the returning Alberto Ferrández on the BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2 Team. Both riders are 19 and represent Yamaha's ongoing push to funnel young talent up through the categories via its BLU CRU project.
Ferrandez is currently in his first full Moto2 season, partnering with Izan Guevara with the Pramac Yamaha team. Facing a new category and several circuits he'd never seen before, his rookie year presented a steep learning curve, with Ferrández currently sitting 21st overall. For his second season, Yamaha expects him to take a big step forward, with Team Director Gino Borsoi setting a clear benchmark for Ferrandez to "establish himself consistently inside the top ten from the beginning of the championship."
Carpe arrives from Moto3, where he spent the past two seasons with the Red Bull KTM Ajo team. Carpe finished fourth overall as a rookie in 2025, and finds himself in the same position this season. The team is tempering expectations for his first year in the intermediate category, with Borsoi hoping to see him "start translating his potential into encouraging results from the middle of the season onwards."
Carpe will be taking over the seat currently occupied by Izan Guevara, who currently sits second in the Moto2 standings, trailing Manuel González by just 5.5 points, with five rounds remaining. Guevara is set to move up to Pramac Yamaha's MotoGP team in 2027. Guevara sets an example for Carpe's and Ferrández's path, progressing each year from a 22nd place finish in 2023 to fighting for the **** le this season.

One of the most basic realities of the NFL trade market is that, when a team adds a key player during a given season, someone will be taking a seat.
In Seattle, the "someone" who will be leaving the starting lineup after the arrival of guard Quenton Nelson is Anthony Bradford. With Nelson taking over at left guard and 2025 first-rounder Grey Zabel moving to right guard, former starting right guard Anthony Bradford will move to the bench.
"It's not an easy situation," coach Mike Macdonald told reporters on Thursday. "I thought Anthony played good football for us, and he has, and he's earned a significant role on our team, a starting-level role. It's one of those 'through not around' type of things with AB that is not easy.
"There's no way to sugarcoat it, and he believes this when we say this, how much we love him. The guys love him in the locker room. He's a fantastic teammate. We don't expect him to be jumping over joy in this situation because that's not realistic, but he's going to be a great teammate and he's going to stay ready.
"We know how this league works. You're a play away from him playing every play again. It's not an easy situation, but he's a tough cookie, and the guys will have his back as well and we're behind him as well, but it's not easy."

Bears' Kyle Monangai gets discouraging injury update ahead of Seahawks clash appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago Bears have a challenging **** ignment in Week 8 when they travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks Monday night. The Seahawks are coming off an impressive 20-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in which their defense shut down their previously unbeaten opponent.
The Bears would like all of their top weapons to be functioning at a high level in this game because the Seahawks are so strong defensively. They are the top-ranked team in the league in fewest yards allowed at 233.9 per game, and they are second to the Minnesota Vikings in points allowed at 17.9 per game.
As a result, the Bears would like running back Kyle Monangai back in the lineup. He has missed the last three games with a turf toe injury. Monangai did not practice in Thursday's session with both the turf toe injury and a thumb issue listed as the main problem areas.

All Pro guard Quenton Nelson is preparing to make his Seattle Seahawks debut Monday night against the Chicago Bears, giving the Seahawks an eight-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro presence on their offensive line.
But before Nelson takes his first snap in a Seahawks uniform, he has another challenge: moving his life and family from Indianapolis to a place they have never lived.
The Seahawks are working to make that transition as easy as possible while getting their new guard ready for primetime.
Nelson's reputation as a dominant interior lineman preceded his arrival in Seattle. When head coach Mike Macdonald was asked what stood out while watching Nelson's tape, his answer was simple.
"Well, they run it left," Macdonald said. "He's a guy you want to run behind. I know that."

A late-night dinner in Beverly Hills has set tongues wagging, as the pictures show the actress enjoying a relaxed evening with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds. While the duo was not alone at the table, the attention stayed firmly on the two of them. What happened as the night wound down adds another twist to their tale.
Deuxmoi shared the images on Instagram, mentioning that the pair were photographed at an intimate dinner at Cipriani in Beverly Hills. TMZ also obtained photos and video of the evening. According to the outlet, Sofia Vergara and Dan Reynolds held hands throughout their late-night meal.
The photos capture an easy, affectionate rapport. Vergara, 54, is seen smiling broadly as she leans across the table, her chin resting on one fist while Reynolds, 39, holds her other hand. Their chemistry also appeared undeniable.
Two friends joined them for the meal, including Anastasia Soare, who was seated beside Vergara. Even with friends at the table, the images keep the focus on the two of them. They also appeared to be chatting animatedly and enjoying a relaxed night out. As the night wound down, reports suggest that the pair slipped out through the restaurant's back door at around 12:30 am.
The outing also comes as Vergara's past marriage is making headlines once again. Her ex-husband, Joe Manganiello, made several claims about their past relationship in his new memoir, "Bloodlines."
