Chase Briscoe left Darlington Raceway with a solid finish, but it was difficult for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to view it that way.
Briscoe finished sixth in Sunday's Southern 500 after leading 30 laps and spending much of the night in contention for the victory. More importantly, he entered the race as the two-time defending winner and had a chance to become the first driver to win three consecutive Southern 500s.
Instead, Christopher Bell captured the Chase opener.
For Briscoe, the frustration centered on the final restart.
After a late caution, Briscoe chose the inside lane and initially appeared to have an opportunity to control the closing laps. Instead, several cars passed him after Turn 2, dropping him to sixth by the finish.

NASCAR's new superspeedway package didn't completely transform the racing at Daytona, but it showed enough improvement to deserve another opportunity.
The package debuted during Saturday's ******* e Zero Sugar 400 with the rear spoiler reduced from seven inches to four and horsepower lowered from 510 to 465. NASCAR's goal was to reduce drag and give drivers a better opportunity to move through the field instead of relying so heavily on fuel-saving strategies to gain track position. NASCAR
From a viewer's perspective, there were encouraging signs.
The field still raced three-wide, but the cars didn't appear permanently locked into place. After approximately 10 to 15 laps, the bottom and top lanes began separating as handling became more important. Denny Hamlin noticed the same development, explaining on his podcast, Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin, that the field could run three-wide for roughly 10 to 15 laps before the middle lane disappeared. The bottom lane would then move down the track while the top lane moved higher as drivers searched for clean air and additional room to move side to side. Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin
That separation created more room for drivers to search for clean air and attempt moves. Bubba Wallace said the runs felt slightly larger and that drivers could make some passes. Chase Briscoe and runner-up Daniel Suárez went further, saying the package allowed drivers to create runs and make moves that were more difficult under the previous configuration. Hull FC winger Tom Briscoe has announced he will retire from playing at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old former England international started his career with the Black and Whites in 2008 and has scored 232 tries in 471 appearances to date.
He joined Leeds Rhinos for the 2014 season and won two Grand Finals and three Challenge Cups during his eight years there, before winning another Challenge Cup with Leigh Leopards in 2023.
Briscoe returned to Hull in April 2024 and has scored 17 tries in 64 games in his second stint.
He said it "felt like the stars have aligned a little bit" that his final career appearance will be against Leeds at Headingley.

Joey Logano — winner: "My team did a great job. The pressure was on everybody to make the right calls, to execute the runs, to have a good pit stop there. We were door-to-door pretty much onto pit road. That tested everything we had. I thought we were gonna be in good shape because the run before that we were a lot faster than (Chase Briscoe) right at the end, but we weren't able to be the same amount of good as we wanted to be. This is the first time I've had all of my kids here for a win, so this is a real special one for our family. I'm looking forward to enjoying it. It's a great recovery so far. There's a long way to go in the season, but we can see the front from here. We've still got a couple more to gain some more points to set ourselves up better. I just like doing burnouts. That's really all there is to it. I thought it was a cool opportunity to do a burnout right here. I might get my hand slapped, but it was worth it."
Chase Briscoe — second: "Yeah, I don't know what more I needed. I thought that last run I was a little bit better than him. To get there at the end, prior run to the pit stop, I just lost brakes, got really, really loose. Gave up a three-second advantage. That was ultimately the difference. One bad run. Like I said, that was the difference maker there in the end. It's weird to be running second here. This has been a real struggle to me, this place. I think that's my first ever top 10 here even. To get close, not get it done is so frustrating. I had a really fast Toyota and wasn't able to seal the deal there in the end. The brake deal was interesting. I had great brakes. I felt like a large majority of the race it was to my advantage. I could get into the corner so deep compared to everyone. As I kind of lost that, I lost my advantage. I came not mediocre, but I wasn't quite as strong as what I needed to be to maintain there. Yeah, definitely frustrating from that standpoint, but still huge improvement from what I've been here, for sure. Go on to the next one. Yeah, that's great (to clinch a Chase spot). Obviously that was the goal. You want to be able to race for a championship. A long way to go. We need to get fifth in points. We continued to do what we needed to do from that standpoint, had a great points night. It would have been great to have 15 more points at the end. Yeah, just frustrating to say the least to have one slip away like that at the end."
Austin Cindric — third: "Yeah, that's kind of the name of the game here, especially since they introduced this right side here last year. I thought that was one of our strengths. We could fire off good enough, but I thought I was one of the best cars, especially after about 30 laps. We were a little too good too late in the runs, but, overall, like I said, it was a much needed run for our Ford Mustang. I feel like car performance-wise, for sure. You saw that from all four of our cars. Obviously, with Joey getting the win, the 21 was super strong all night and Ryan ha

Ryan Blaney's qualifying hot streak shows no signs of slowing down.
The Team Penske driver captured the pole for Saturday night's NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, giving him his second consecutive pole position and his fourth in the last five races. Blaney will lead the field to the green flag after edging Chase Briscoe in Friday's qualifying session.
The pole continues one of the most impressive stretches of qualifying speed in the Cup Series this season as Blaney looks to convert another front-row starting spot into a long-awaited victory.
Blaney will be joined on the front row by Briscoe, whose No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota qualified second.
Josh Berry continued a strong season for Wood Brothers Racing with the third-fastest lap, while Ty Gibbs and William Byron completed the top five.

Denny Hamlin's brake situation at Iowa Speedway appeared so dire on Sunday prior to the race that he effectively forced NASCAR to call his bluff.
Hamlin, alongside fellow Toyota alliance stablemates Chase Briscoe, Riley Herbst and Bubba Wallace, each spent extended time in the garage to make pre-race changes. Those changes were detailed in the stories below.

Less than an hour before the start of Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway, Denny Hamlin's day became even more difficult.
Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed the No. 11 Toyota will start from the rear of the field after the team changed its cooling unit before the green flag. Hamlin had already qualified 29th, meaning he'll now line up behind the entire field despite avoiding any on-track incident during the weekend.
The late adjustment comes as multiple Toyota organizations continue dealing with brake-related concerns that surfaced during practice and qualifying, creating one of the biggest storylines entering Sunday's race.
Hamlin's move to the rear is just one piece of a larger problem affecting Toyota teams at Iowa.
During Saturday's on-track sessions, Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe experienced significant brake issues, while all three 23XI Racing entries also dealt with varying levels of brake concerns.

For nearly two decades, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" has remained one of the most recognizable movies ever ***** ociated with NASCAR. Now the sport is bringing that connection back to the track where it all began.
NASCAR announced the launch of Dega-Con, a new fan campaign celebrating the 20th anniversary of Talladega Nights. The celebration will culminate during Talladega Superspeedway's NASCAR Playoffs weekend, Oct. 23-25, with entertainment, fan experiences and collaborations designed to celebrate the movie's lasting place in NASCAR culture.
The campaign marks one of NASCAR's biggest pop culture activations in recent years, tying one of the sport's most famous films directly into one of its biggest race weekends.
According to NASCAR, additional details surrounding Dega-Con will be announced over the coming weeks, but organizers say the event will combine entertainment, nostalgia and fan experiences throughout Talladega's fall race weekend.
The campaign officially launched with a humorous video centered around "Talladega Nights Withdrawal Syndrome," a fictional condition that features Cup Series drivers Chase Briscoe, Noah Gragson, Ross Chastain, Ryan Preece and Riley Herbst.

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Iowa Speedway this weekend for the Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol, bringing the sport back to one of its newest and most competitive short tracks.
Last year's race produced one of the most memorable finishes of the 2025 season, with fuel strategy ultimately deciding the winner after a caution-filled afternoon.

The 2025 Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol was held on Aug. 3, 2025, and featured 350 laps around the 0.875-mile oval.
After stretching a tank of fuel over the closing run, William Byron drove the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to victory, holding off Chase Briscoe by 1.192 seconds.

NASCAR is gearing up for the 25th race weekend of the 2026 season at Iowa Speedway, and the Cup Series is bound to put on a show. In 2025, William Byron beat Chase Briscoe for his second win of the year. Now, the sport will head to Iowa with a substantial amount of money on the line.
The purse for the Cup Series race at Iowa will be $11,233,037 on Sunday afternoon. NASCAR doesn't release the earnings for the winning driver anymore, meaning it's impossible to tell how much of the $11,233,037 will go toward the team in victory lane. Last year, the purse for Iowa sat at $9,797,935, which is a $1,435,102 increase.
It will be fascinating to see which NASCAR driver will earn the most money at Iowa this weekend. Byron is looking to go back-to-back in the race at Iowa, but Briscoe and Brad Keselowski had good cars in 2025. Iowa always puts on a show, and this weekend should be no different.

The NASCAR Cup Series is set to arrive at Iowa Speedway for its 23rd race of the 2026 season. It is the only date at Iowa, as NASCAR only goes to the venue once per year. In 2025, Chase Briscoe won the pole for the Cup Series race at Iowa, marking his sixth of seven pole positions during the season.
First, the Cup Series needs to qualify for the event at Iowa, and the qualifying format is simple. Every driver will make a one-lap run, with the overall lap times determining the starting lineup. There will only be one round, and the groups do not matter in setting the starting lineup by the inside or outside rows. The metric system determines the qualifying order.
Below, you can check out the NASCAR qualifying order and groups for the 2026 Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa this weekend!

Chase Briscoe didn't wreck anybody to make his point this week. He just went on a podcast and said the thing every driver in the Cup Series garage already knows but almost ****** ody puts on the record: NASCAR's disciplinary process has a don't-ask-don't-tell problem, and it keeps turning the sport's biggest stars into bad actors every time a fresh wreck gets reviewed.
The remarks came on the Rubbin' is Racing podcast, days after NASCAR closed the books on two separate Chicagoland Speedway incidents without issuing a single penalty. Briscoe's issue isn't that NASCAR lets drivers settle scores on the racetrack - he's fine with that part. His problem is what happens after the checkered flag, when a driver who obviously wrecked somebody on purpose has to stand in front of reporters and call it a racing incident, because that's the price of staying out of the penalty report. "Everybody knows you're lying about it," Briscoe said, describing the bind NASCAR's own process puts drivers in.
He's not wrong about the bind. He's also sitting on more supporting evidence than he probably realized, because NASCAR has spent this entire season demonstrating, in exhaustive public detail, what actually earns a driver a fine, and intent alone has never been enough.
Rewind to Texas Motor Speedway in early May, before any of the Chicagoland drama existed. Ryan Preece got frustrated with Ty Gibbs, announced his intentions over his own team radio, and turned Gibbs into the outside wall about half a lap later. NASCAR's response was swift and public: a $50,000 fine and a 25-point penalty, among the stiffest behavioral penalties handed out all year. NASCAR's vice president of racing communications walked through the reasoning himself: officials reviewed the team radio, the in-car video and the car's SMT telemetry data, and the combination of Preece stating his intentions and then following through on them was enough to cross into what the rulebook labels actions detrimental to stock car racing. RFK Racing appealed. The National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld the penalty in late May, and Preece was left admitting it no longer mattered what he thought, the fine and the points were staying gone.
This wasn't Briscoe's first brush with NASCAR's points ledger this year either. His own speeding penalty back in March already put a dent in his playoff cushion, which makes his willingness to needle NASCAR's officiating now feel less like a driver picking a random fight and more like someone who has personally paid the price of the system he's describing.

Drafting races have a way of making oddsmakers look smart one minute and completely wrong the next.
That's the challenge facing sportsbooks ahead of Sunday's Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway. While betting markets have identified three clear favorites entering the weekend, history suggests almost anyone in the field could find themselves battling for the win when the checkered flag falls.
EchoPark Speedway's pack racing produces late-race crashes, surprise contenders and dramatic finishes almost every time the NASCAR Cup Series visits the 1.54-mile oval. Still, the latest odds reveal which drivers sportsbooks believe have the strongest chance to survive the chaos.
Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott each open the weekend at +900, making them co-favorites for Sunday's race.
Reddick's position is hardly surprising. The 23XI Racing driver won the February race at EchoPark Speedway, leading 53 laps before holding off Chase Briscoe in the closing miles. Although his past two races have ended in disappointing finishes, sportsbooks clearly believe his drafting-track success outweighs that recent slump.

NASCAR is performing a deeper inspection process after the Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway last weekend. Denny Hamlin's No. 11 car for Joe Gibbs Racing has been taken to the NASCAR R&D Center for further inspection after Chicagoland, the sport announced. Hamlin finished in fourth place on Sunday night.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has been sensational during the 2026 Cup Series season and earned another top-5 finish at Chicagoland. NASCAR taking Hamlin's No. 11 car to the R&D Center doesn't automatically mean something is wrong; however, it does heighten the risk of a potential penalty.
In the NextGen car era, drivers and teams have received significant penalties when NASCAR takes a car to the R&D Center. There have been several occasions when they have lost over 100 points due to an infraction. Most cars are cleared after going to the R&D Center, but exceptions exist.
Hamlin will likely be OK; however, NASCAR has blasted teams in the past for any wrongdoing.

The NASCAR Cup Series returned to Chicagoland Speedway, and it was an overwhelming success. NASCAR sold out Chicagoland in its first race weekend since the 2019 season. William Byron won both stages; however, it was a Joe Gibbs Racing showdown in the final laps at Chicagoland on Sunday night.
Chase Briscoe and the No. 19 team for Joe Gibbs Racing won the eero 400 at Chicagoland, earning their first victory of the 2026 Cup Series season. Briscoe held off a hard-charging Christopher Bell, who had the best car in the Final Stage. If not for A.J. Allmendinger's lapped car, the result might have been different on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin extended his points lead to 44 points over Tyler Reddick in the regular season standings after the No. 45 car had to change a radiator during the event. However, Briscoe was the top story on Sunday night, as he finally earned his first win of the 2026 season.

JOLIET, IL — With all the attention on Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick and the way they’ve racked up NASCAR Cup Series wins for Toyota, it’s been easy to overlook Chase Briscoe.
Not so much anymore.
Following up on a runner-up finish on the Sonoma Raceway road course in California, Briscoe capped a popular weekend at Chicagoland Speedway with his first victory of the season July 5.
“We have not been as consistent, I would say, as [Hamlin and Reddick],” said Briscoe, who won three races and finished third in the 2025 championship. “But from a speed standpoint, I feel like we’ve been right here with them.”
Briscoe, 31, held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell, who also was chasing his first win of the season, by .276 seconds. Hamlin took third, giving team owner Joe Gibbs the top three spots in the finishing order on a night Toyotas claimed seven of the top 10.

Sunday night’s eero 400 at Chicagoland Speedway demonstrated why NASCAR made the right decision to return to this track. We got a few surprises in the NASCAR race tonight, with Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson finishing near the back of the field, and some standouts delivering great finishes under the lights with Chase Briscoe getting the win.
Let’s dive into our winners and losers from the NASCAR race today at Chicagoland.
Pitting a few laps after Chase Briscoe in the final stage didn’t quite work out for the No. 20 team, but Christopher Bell should still feel good about the outcome tonight. Still racing with a fractured wrist that is essentially making him drive left-handed, Bell finished second on Sunday night at Chicagoland and that gives him consecutive top-five finishes. Pulling that off seemed impossible a few weeks ago when many ***** umed the wrist injury might keep him out of action. With 90 total points in the last two races, Bell has given himself a 101-point advantage above the cutline.

Connor Zilisch is the unluckiest driver in NASCAR, perhaps ever. It had already been a disastrous rookie season for Zilisch coming into Chicagoland. At a minimum, the No. 88 team just wanted him to get laps in so he could gain a lot more experience after picking up six DNFs this season. Seconds into the eero 400, still on Lap 1, Ryan Preece got turned down the track after contact, collected the No. 88, and sent Zilisch’s car skidding into the inside wall with race-ending damage. Another last-place finish for the 19-year-old, who might need to hire an Etsy witch at this point.

Chase Briscoe survived a late charge from teammate Christopher Bell to win Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway, delivering Joe Gibbs Racing another victory and punching his ticket into the 2026 Chase.
Bell, continuing to race through a fractured left wrist, finished just 0.276 seconds behind Briscoe after spending the closing laps searching for an opening that never came. Polesitter Denny Hamlin completed an all-Toyota podium in third.
The manufacturer didn’t stop there.
Toyota placed seven drivers inside the top 10, marking the first time in company history it has put seven cars in the top 10 of a NASCAR Cup Series race.
William Byron finished fourth as the highest-running Chevrolet, while teammate Alex Bowman rounded out the top five. Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs, Corey Heim and Riley Herbst completed the top 10.

Chase Briscoe collected his sixth career NASCAR Cup win and his first of the 2026 season on Sunday, winning in NASCAR's long-awaited return to Chicagoland Speedway.
He had to hold off a charging Christopher Bell at the end of the race, and led a Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2-3 with Bell second and Denny Hamlin third.
Briscoe also claimed the win on crew chief James Small's birthday, delivering him quite the gift.
Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron and Alex Bowman finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs, Corey Heim, and Riley Herbst filled out the remainder of the top ten.

Denny Hamlin increased his NASCAR Cup Series points lead substantially after a top-5 finish at Chicagoland on July 5.
Hamlin finished 3rd, while Tyler Reddick's radiator damage resigned him to a 36th-place run. Hamlin leads Reddick by 44 points heading to Atlanta next week.
Chase Briscoe claimed his first win of the season in the eero 400 to get further away from the Chase bubble. Erik Jones jumped into 16th with a solid 15th-place finish, while Ryan Preece finished 32nd after a Lap 1 spin.
