LAS MINAS, Cuba (AP) — Liexer De La Cruz took a deep breath as he entered a federal courtroom in Miami, where life as he knew it would end.
It was Jan. 9, and he thought he was attending a routine immigration hearing — not deciding on the rest of his life in just seconds, having to choose between returning to Cuba or risking deportation at any moment. He didn't have a chance to confer with his wife and sister who were waiting outside.
De La Cruz had spent five years putting down roots in the United States after crossing almost a dozen countries by car, foot, bus and boat. He thought of what he and his wife had accomplished after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas in August 2021, obtaining the immigration forms in hopes of requesting green cards via the Cuban Adjustment Act.
"The first thing I did was call my aunt and I told her, 'I'm in the United States. I'm in the United States.' And we began to cry," he recalled.
Cubans have historically received preferential access to a pathway to U.S. citizenship via the Cuban Adjustment Act, but they have been increasingly targeted under the second Trump administration.

The Seattle Mariners are about to place their flagging chance at a playoff spot on the bat of 21-year-old Lazaro Montes. The slugger is being called up after hitting 38 home runs in the minors in 2026, including 10 in August.
The Mariners need him to continue the power display in September in a Seattle uniform. The 6-foot-5 Cuban is expected to join the team for the start of a three-game series in Boston on Tuesday.
Whether the left-hander plays immediately at Fenway Park, which traditionally favors right-handed hitters, is for manager Dan Wilson to decide. Boston is scheduled to start left-hander Peyton Tolle in the opener, ace right-hander Sonny Gray on Wednesday and lefty Pablo Sandoval on Thursday.
Montes has struggled against left-handed pitchers in 2026, batting just .201 with six homers. He has raked right-handers for 32 homers and a .274 average.

Longtime baseball reporter Francys Romero reported Sunday evening that Cuban OF Lazaro Montes will be called up to the Seattle Mariners, with Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reporting that the move is expected ahead of Tuesday's game in Boston, coinciding with the expansion of rosters to 28 for September call-ups. Montes has been one of the most powerful sluggers in the minor leagues since arriving in pro ball after training in the Dominican Republic as a teenager. Progressing through the same program that produced Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez, the comparisons for the ****** anic lefty have been common. They're not quite accurate, however. Montes is a huge kid, a 21 year old listed at 6'5, 210 whose frame is as massive as his smile. Like Alvarez, while he moves well for his size, his gait and foot speed are never going to reflect as plus defensively, though Montes has good baseline athleticism that helps him make many 50/50 plays despite middling range. Moreover, his arm is absolutely massive, a profile similar to an early-career Nelson Cruz. Not just that, but Montes is a high-effort player in all phases, occasionally stunning opponents with his pace and hustle.

But that's not the main thing Lazaro Montes is all about. The reason he's been a top-100 prospect and one of the most anticipated hitting prospects in years for Seattle is gargantuan power that's seen him club 21 homers in 2024 across 542 PA at a teenager, then 32 a season ago between High-A and Double-A, and now 38 big flies in 537 PA across Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma. At every level, Montes has been a variation of highly consistent, slugging massively, walking prominently, and whiffing most of the time he's not doing one of those two options.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Six people who were deported by the United States to Liberia last week resisted getting off the plane and instead were sent to Equatorial Guinea, another ‌African nation that signed a third-country deportation agreement with the Trump administration, a person on the plane and a lawyer in contact with the six said Monday.
Under a series of often secret agreements, the Trump administration has deported thousands of people to two dozen countries that aren't their own as it pushes ahead with its immigration crackdown, advocates say. Immigration lawyers say the practice is being used as a legal loophole to indirectly return some asylum seekers to countries they fled.
The group who refused to get off the plane in Liberia on Thursday include four Cuban men, a Brazilian man and a Cameroonian woman, the person and lawyer said.
A Honduran deportee aboard the flight said the group refused to disembark, saying Liberia was "not their country" and that they would face danger there. They were then separated from the others, he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals.
He said the other passengers got off in Liberia because they feared officers would force them.

For a man reportedly worth more than $10 billion, entrepreneur Mark Cuban spends a lot of time talking about wealth inequality—and how to distribute it more evenly.

The 'Shark Tank' star has long shared suggestions—and has enacted his plans—to better balance income throughout the U.S. economy. One of Cuban's ideas was to give employees company stock: he told a recent episode of the 'What It Takes' podcast that he awarded 330 employees at his media company, Broadcast.com, stock ahead of Yahoo's $5.7 billion acquisition of the company in 1999. Three hundred of those employees became millionaires as a result, he said.

Cuban also awarded equity and cash bonuses to employees of his first IT consulting company, MicroSolutions.
But the famed investor has now taken the suggestion a step further: If founders and CEOs don't seek to share the wealth generated by their companies with their employees, they should be forced to give back to society by paying higher corporate taxes.
Writing on X, the cofounder of online pharmacy Cost Plus Drugs, was asked what his plan would be to reduce wealth inequality across the country. He responded: "Increase the taxes of any company that doesn't offer equity to every employee on a pro rata basis to non-founder executives. If they get rich from the market, so do they.
"It's exactly what I have done for employees in companies I have started. Most wealthy people get that way from selling their companies or taking them public."
While Cuban proposes increased taxes as a motivator to get business leaders to share equity more broadly, a criticism of higher taxes (and tariffs, as consumers have learned the hard way) is that increases to company costs are often passed back to customers and ultimately the public. This represents a further stretch on budgets of consumers already dealing with above-target inflation, and without the boon of company stock to fall back on.

Stocks rallied on the favorable PPI report, which prompted a -4 bp decline in the 10-year T-note yield and a drop in expectations for a Fed rate hike in September to 35% from 40% on Wednesday. Stocks also saw support from a drop of more than -2% in crude oil prices, amid a lack of any new US or Iranian military attacks in the Persian Gulf.
