Generating $180,000 annually requires roughly $5.1M at a conservative 3.5% yield, but only $1.8M at an aggressive 10% yield.
A 3.5% dividend yield growing 8% annually doubles income every 9 years, while high-yield static distributions quietly lose real purchasing power to inflation.
Recalculating your target using actual after-tax spending rather than gross income can reduce the conservative capital requirement by more than $1M.
Two retirees, same $1 million, same 4% rule, buy one finished with $1.4 million, the other hit $0 in 12 years. Our free reader guide explains the flaw that separated them, and the income-first method built to avoid it.
Fifteen thousand dollars a month works out to $180,000 a year. That is roughly the income of a senior software engineer, a mid-career physician, or a dual-earner household in a coastal metro. It is also nearly triple the current U.S. per capita disposable personal income of $68,391 and multiples of the median full-time worker's earnings of $1,251 per week. Replacing it through portfolio yield alone is a large capital problem, and the number moves dramatically depending on the yield you are willing to chase.

1248 GMT – The dollar could remain little affected by the latest bout of U.S. trade uncertainty in the near term, MUFG Bank’s Derek Halpenny says in a note. President Trump’s plans for new tariffs should broadly replicate the Section 122 tariffs which are due to expire on Friday, meaning the currency implications should be limited, he says. Moreover, it comes at a time when markets are pricing in U.S. interest-rate rises and Middle East risks are higher, providing some support to the dollar, he says. However, if trade uncertainty becomes more ***** ounced, dollar selling could re-emerge as investors become more concerned over unpredictable policies and the damage to the U.S. economy, he says. The DXY dollar index trades flat at 101.135. (renae.dyerwsj.com)
0940 GMT – U.S. Treasury yields trade steady on the day, with the 10-year yield close to an earlier two-month high, while the dollar is marginally lower. Investors remain cautious as oil prices rise and Middle East tensions continue, leaving a risk that yields and the dollar could rise. “The pullback [in the U.S. dollar] could prove limited, however, as Treasury yields remain at elevated levels and geopolitical tensions could continue to fuel safe-haven demand,” DHF Capital S.A’s Bas Kooijman says in a note. Brent crude rises 3.5% to $94.19. The 10-year Treasury yield is last up 0.2 basis points at 4.630%, having earlier hit a high of 4.642%, according to Tradeweb. The DXY dollar index falls 0.1% to 101.102, having hit a one-week high of 101.210 overnight. (emese.barthawsj.com)

Second quarter earnings continued to roll in, with leading chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) reporting strong results that pointed to robust AI demand. UnitedHealth Group (UNH), GE Aerospace (GE), and Netflix (NFLX) also report on Thursday, rounding out the earnings mix.
The week started with a wave of bank earnings that showed broad-based strength, driven by Wall Street trading activity. "It's getting close to as good as it gets," JPMorgan (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon said about current banking conditions after the country's largest bank reported its biggest quarterly profit on record on Tuesday.
It was a good start to what's expected to be a strong earnings season for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). According to FactSet data, **** ysts estimate the year-over-year S&P 500 earnings growth rate for the second quarter will be 23.3% — above the five-year average of 16.4% and the 10-year average of 10.3%.

Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) is one of the top stocks to buy according to Whale Rock Capital Management. On June 18, Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) announced that it has shipped more than five million coherent photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to global customers of its partner Marvell Technology.
These chips are used in coherent optical transceivers, which are specialized components that transmit data over fiber optic cables. According to Tower, these components are increasingly needed to link data centers as AI computing drives up demand for network bandwidth and speed. It added that coherent PICs are harder to build than simpler chip types because they must precisely control both the phase and polarization of light. Tower has been working with Marvell to push this technology forward, including combining silicon with other specialized materials, stacking electronic components in three dimensions, and using an advanced packaging method known as V-Grooves to improve how light is guided through the chip.
Dr. Ed Preisler, who leads Tower's RF Business Unit, said the company's photonics manufacturing platforms need to keep evolving alongside the requirements of coherent optical transceivers, and that Tower is proud of its partnership with Marvell in this area.
For Dr. Radha Nagarajan, Marvell's chief technology officer for optical engineering, the shipment is a milestone that proves the strength of the two companies' collaboration. Nagarajan added that Marvell intends to keep working with Tower to develop next-generation coherent technology suited to large-scale data center networks.
Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) is a specialized semiconductor foundry. It provides technology, development, and process platforms for integrated circuits, including SiPho, SiGe, CMOS image sensor, RF CMOS, mixed signal CMOS, non-imaging sensors, and integrated power management technologies.

Section 280E forces U.S. cannabis operators to pay effective tax rates above 70%, an existential burden that a move to Schedule III would immediately eliminate.
MSOS rallied 99% on rescheduling hopes, but prediction markets price just 18% odds by July, and TLRY has shed 97% from its peak.
Act now: the **** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Tilray Brands didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
While cannabis investors finally have an expedited DEA administrative hearing on the calendar and a fresh Schedule III pathway in motion, Wall Street has stood at this exact intersection before. The pure-play U.S. cannabis proxy, AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (NYSEARCA: MSOS), has vaulted 99.2% over the trailing year on rescheduling hope, yet still trades 81.0% below its September 2020 launch price. The pattern of euphoria followed by collapse has been the only consistent feature of this trade.
The catalyst this time around centers on Section 280E. That single line of the tax code denies cannabis sellers the ordinary business deductions every other operator takes for granted, taxing them on gross profit rather than net income, and pushing effective tax rates above 70% for U.S. multi-state operators. A move from Schedule I to Schedule III would remove that burden. The DEA's expedited hearing began June 29, 2026, with a conclusion targeted for mid-July and a potential final rule in the Federal Register to follow.

Private equity is staring down a growing pile of investments it can't cash out of.
Fueled by the artificial intelligence frenzy, Wall Street's 2026 deal boom is on pace to set records. But even the roaring market hasn't been enough to help the private equity industry clear out its mountain of aging portfolio companies.
PE firms are sitting on 13,325 unsold US companies as of the end of May, up from 12,900 as of last October, according to PitchBook estimates. It will take 11 years to sell that existing inventory at the current pace, a two-year increase compared to last fall.
"It would be one thing if we were in difficult market times, but we have a reasonably strong economy, a stock market that sets a new record about once a week, and a booming IPO market," said Scott Bok, former CEO of investment bank Greenhill & Co.
"Private equity is really facing a conundrum right now," Bok added.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of the safe stocks for beginners to buy in 2026. Reuters reported on June 25 that, according to EU antitrust regulators, Amazon and Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ:MSFT) cloud computing services should be designated as "gatekeepers" under landmark tech rules. This step would subject them to strict obligations aimed at curbing market ‌power. It further stated that the designation under the Digital Markets Act would impose a set of obligations and bans on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, which includes "limits on self-preferencing and requirements to ensure interoperability and data portability".
In a separate development, Following Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Chevron's signing of a 20-year agreement to supply natural-gas- fired power to a data-center campus in West Texas, JPMorgan stated that it considers the offtake as durable and believes "the most compelling element of the structure" is its behind-the-meter design, whereby the plant generates its own power on-site and feeds the campus directly, without drawing on the grid or involving a local utility. The firm further stated that it sees the deal providing "valuable diversification" against the balance of Chevron's commodity-price-exposed portfolio.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) develops and supports services, software, devices, and solutions. It operates through the Intelligent Cloud, Productivity and Business Processes, and More Personal Computing segments.

SSA-44 covers eight qualifying events including retirement and spousal death but cannot reverse voluntary income spikes like Roth conversions or RMDs.
A spouse's death halves IRMAA thresholds overnight, potentially triggering $6,355 in annual surcharges even when household income stays completely flat.

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is emerging as one of the market's trickiest AI plays.
The company is closely related to the AI boom with its government data platforms, commercial software and artificial intelligence platform. But investors now are seeing such exposure less as a clear tailwind and more as a risk.
Shares had fallen for seven straight sessions before rebounding on June 26, after touching a fresh 12-month low of $107.27. The stock bounced back on June 26, gaining more than 5% to around $113, although that rally came after a tough period that saw Palantir down significantly for 2026 and roughly 45% below its November 2025 high.
The pressure is a sign of a bigger concern on Wall Street: The same AI capabilities that are boosting demand for Palantir's products could eventually disrupt parts of the traditional software market.
That concern has affected a lot of software names. But Palantir still has something many rivals do not: a high-profile buyer going in while the chart looks awful.

A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the first quarter of 2026, the Small Company Fund (Investor shares) fell 19.78%, significantly lagging the Russell 2000 Growth index's 2.81% decline. Worsened market conditions due to the Iran war, driving the oil price spike and increased volatility in equities. Please review the Fund's top five holdings to gain insights into their key selections for 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, The Brown Capital Management Small Company Fund highlighted Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ:CGNX). On June 23, 2026, Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ:CGNX) closed at $63.96 per share. One-month return of Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ:CGNX) was -4.11%, and its shares gained 107.80% over the past 52 weeks. "Among the top contributors to performance in the first quarter of 2026 was Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ:CGNX). Cognex is a leading provider of machine-vision systems that capture and ******* yze visual information in order to automate tasks in manufacturing and logistics. As machine-vision systems improve in accuracy and get cheaper with the evolution of technology, they perform a broader range of tasks that previously were performed using manual labor. Additionally, Cognex has recently launched new products that leverage AI and further expand the use cases addressable with machine vision. We expect Cognex's growth to be driven by broadening applications for machine vision and increasing adoption of machine vision in existing use cases.
During the quarter, Cognex reported fourth quarter revenue of $252 million, up 10% over the year-earlier period and above expectations. Profitability also increased, as the company generated $35 million in operating income, up 14% year over year. The company announced that it is taking steps to optimize its product portfolio, exiting some non-core, lower-growth or lower-margin businesses, reducing up to $40 million in costs in 2026 and increasing growth and profitability going forward. Cognex also noted growing interest from customers regarding its AI-driven machine-vision and industrial-automation capabilities. The company issued forward guidance that was above expectations in both revenue growth and profitability. Monday's S&P Global release painted a troubling picture for factory workers: headcount reductions in U.S. manufacturing have accelerated to a severity unseen outside of the early-pandemic collapse of 2020 and, setting that episode aside, not matched since the depths of the 2008–2009 financial crisis.
A strong headline number did little to obscure the labor market deterioration. June's flash U.S. Manufacturing PMI came in at 55.7, its highest reading in 49 months, edging up from 55.1 in May. Output expanded at a pace last seen in July 2021, propelled by the sharpest jump in new orders in more than four years. Yet staffing levels declined for the second straight month, with firms prioritizing cost control in the face of still-elevated input prices and an uncertain demand horizon.
"Most worrying was the further fall in employment, notably in the manufacturing sector," said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, in a statement. "Factory job cuts are running at the highest since 2009 if the pandemic is excluded, reflecting concerns over the sustainability of the recent upturn in demand alongside worries over the escalating cost of raw materials."
Stockpiling, not underlying consumer or business demand, appears to have been the primary engine of June's manufacturing gains, according to the survey. Input inventories were built up at a rate approaching the all-time high for the survey, surpassed only by the stockpiling wave triggered by the 2025 tariff announcements, as manufacturers raced to insulate themselves from supply chain disruptions and cost spikes linked to the Middle East conflict. Vendor lead times extended to their longest since August 2022.
Outside the factory sector, the data offered limited encouragement. June's flash Composite PMI Output Index ticked up to 52.2 from 51.5 in May, a five-month high, while the services reading moved to 51.3 from 50.7. Williamson cautioned that the numbers point to an economy "struggling to grow much faster than a 1% annualized rate in the second quarter."

SHANGHAI, June 5 (Reuters) - China's major solar panel manufacturers are ramping up higher-margin battery exports to boost revenue as growth in photovoltaic (PV) sales slows, betting on rising global demand for renewable energy storage to ‌cut reliance on fossil fuels.
The sector has been hit by weaker domestic installations, slowing exports and record-low prices, with executives ‌expecting global demand to decline in 2026.
That has pushed players including JinkoSolar, JA Solar, LONGi Green Energy and Trina Solar to accelerate expansion into battery storage, company executives told Reuters.
