A Cuban illegal immigrant is facing child-abuse, child-neglect and arson charges after authorities say she poured hot wax on one of her young daughters and set a fire inside her Miami home.
Meliza Campos-Sanchez is facing two counts of child neglect, one count of child abuse and an arson charge stemming from an Aug. 16 incident, authorities said. She will undergo a court-ordered mental-competency evaluation.
Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies responded Sunday to a report of an intentional fire inside the kitchen of a Miami home, according to the criminal complaint obtained by Fox News Digital.
Investigators subsequently found that Campos, a social media influencer with 87,000 Instagram followers, had uploaded videos in which she appeared to pour melted candle wax on herself and on the hands of at least one of her daughters. In a separate video, she allegedly sang and danced in the kitchen before igniting clothing with a lighter.

A Florida couple is being charged with child neglect after allegedly keeping four children confined in the cab of a tractor-trailer for almost seven years without "time to take showers, use the restroom" or "exercise outside," arrest records show.
The children "have not been allowed to attend school for approximately five years," they told interviewers at a child advocacy center, according to an arrest report.
Keisha Epps, 51, and her fiancé, Tamra Marshon Stewart, 37, have been living in the cab with the children while Epps works as a truck driver, driving a route between Miami and Atlanta, according to court documents.
Since December 2019, the children were kept inside the vehicle "for the majority of their days."

The Washington Commanders' offseason has seen quite a few shifts. New faces have been brought in on both sides of the ball, and while general manager Adam Peters spent a lot of time and money on defense, he didn't neglect the offense, eventually signing wide receiver Stefon Diggs to give Jayden Daniels more offensive weapons.
One of the questions around the Commanders' offense is regarding the offensive line. Starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps muscle during camp and is out for the remainder of the season shortly after signing a massive extension. Center Nick Allegretti finally returned to the practice field after missing time with a calf strain.
Sports Illustrated Senior NFL writer Albert Breer recently discussed what he's seen from the Commanders' offensive line during training camp. After talking about Tunsil's injury, Breer writes:
The staff briefly considered moving Josh Conerly Jr. back to his college position, but decided against it because they really liked his progress at right tackle, having gotten bigger and stronger. Plus, they didn't want him to have to rewire everything for this year and then go back to the right side next year. So, Brandon Coleman will be at left tackle, as he was as a rookie in 2024, which means Chris Paul will be the left guard. The other question is at center, where veteran Nick Allegretti, who's got high-end football IQ and is steady, is trying to hold off Julian Good-Jones and rookie Matt Gulbin. Also worth noting: Right guard Sam Cosmi might be the team's best lineman through camp, coming back from an injury-marred season last year.
The competition between Allegretti and Julian Good-Jones is probably not as close as Breer alludes to, but if it is, Peters may find himself in hot water for letting Tyler Biadasz go. The center-to-quarterback exchange has to be seamless. Any gaffes in that exchange will always result in a lost play and have a high likelihood of ending with a turnover. The more work Allegretti gets with Daniels, the smoother that exchange will be.

A Tennessee pastor who spent years traveling the country for his ministry will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a jury convicted him of raping a child, while his wife was found guilty of facilitating the abuse, authorities said.
Benjamin Garlick, 35, was found guilty Monday of seven counts of aggravated rape of a child, six counts of aggravated ****** ual battery, one count of solicitation of ****** ual exploitation of a minor and two violations of Tennessee's Child Protection Act after a two-week trial in Rutherford County.
Circuit Court Judge Barry Tidwell sentenced Garlick to life in prison without the possibility of parole on the aggravated rape convictions, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department. He still faces sentencing on the remaining convictions on Nov. 10.
Garlick's wife, 32-year-old Shaantal Garlick, was convicted of two counts of facilitation of aggravated rape of a child and two counts of aggravated child neglect. She is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 10.

NEW YORK (AP) — The pilot of a speedboat that capsized during a tour around the Statue of Liberty, drowning an infant and her mother, has been arrested by U.S. immigration authorities who say he was in the country illegally.
Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, who has a pending federal criminal case in connection with the Aug. 8 crash, lied to a border officer and falsely claimed he was a U.S. citizen when he entered the country in Texas in 2007, the Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday.
Hernandez-Umana, 46, a citizen of El Salvador, is being held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, according to online records. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said he will eventually be deported.
Immigration authorities arrested him after he was released on bail in his criminal case, where he is charged with causing the deaths of 5-month old Antonella Garcia and 27-year-old Sara Sanchez through misconduct or neglect.
According to prosecutors, Hernandez-Umana wasn't licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, wasn't aware of basic safety rules and told investigators he'd borrowed his friend's personal vessel for the New York Harbor excursion. The boat was illegally chartered and overcrowded, prosecutors said.

Spencer Rattler didn't exactly make the most of his opportunity to start Saturday's preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The New Orleans Saints quarterback showed many of the same flaws that got him benched last season -- a too-conservative attack that neglected the deeper reaches of the field and poor decision-making from the pocket. Every quarterback struggles under pressure. But Rattler's baseline might be lower than others. What we saw on Saturday afternoon was a regression from his performance at training camp this summer.
All told, Rattler went 8-of-11 for 42 yards before the Saints pulled him out of the lineup. He was also sacked twice for a loss of 16 yards. Averaging just 3.8 yards per pass attempt is a problem in itself (last year's NFL average was 7.0, with Rattler ranking 31st at 6.2). But his lowest moment came when he didn't even throw the ball. After being set up deep in his own territory because of a special teams penalty, Rattler floundered under pressure and fumbled the ball away on 1st and 10. He explained what he was thinking after the game.
"Trying to get out of some pressure, probably (should have) just tried to dirt it or go down, and go on to the next play," Rattler told reporters in his postgame press conference. The Saints defense managed to get a stop and force Jacksonville into settling for a short-range field goal.
This was a turnover, but it wasn't Rattler's only mistake on the day. Facing 2nd and 10 from the Jaguars' 25-yard line, Rattler checked down to running back Audric Estime without any hope of turning upfield to make a play. Estime was tackled low as soon as he caught the ball, losing six yards and suffering an injury in the process. Rattler's next pass on 3rd and 16 fell incomplete. He would have done better to throw the ball out of bounds on second down to give himself a better chance. This was a problem for him last season, too.
"Definitely a lot of stuff to improve on after a preseason Game 1," Rattler added, "Just got to keep getting better, as a group."

An 18th Century windmill will be put on Historic England's at-risk register after years of neglect.
Ellis Mill in Lincoln, which was built in 1798, last operated fully in 2020, and has only opened to the public occasionally since then.
Historic England visited the mill in March and said it had "damp, damage to exterior brickwork and failing paintwork" on the wooden cap and sails.
Lincolnshire County Council, which owns the Grade I listed building, said it was considering options for its future and other windmills it owns.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary's president signed a constitutional amendment into law on Saturday that ends his term in office, bringing to a close a dispute between him and the country's new government that was seeking to oust him as part of a purge of officials appointed during the reign of Viktor Orbán.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who defeated the long-serving Orbán in a blowout election in April, had repeatedly called on the Orbán-appointed president, Tamás Sulyok, to resign, arguing he had failed to live up to his role as president by neglecting to stand in the way of antidemocratic steps by Orbán's government.
When Sulyok refused, lawmakers with Magyar's pro-European, center-right Tisza party passed a constitutional amendment this week that called for an immediate end to his term. Sulyok had five days to sign the amendment into law, which he did on the final day before the deadline.
In a video posted to Facebook Saturday evening, Sulyok — whom Magyar had frequently referred to as Orbán's "puppet" — said that being made to sign the amendment was "lasting proof that the fundamental values of a free society, the rule of law, democracy, the principle of power-sharing, have been trampled on in the interest of power."
Sulyok's term will officially end at midnight on Monday, when speaker of Parliament, Ágnes Forsthoffer, will automatically ***** ume his duties until lawmakers elect a new president, a task which has a 30-day deadline.

This is Part 2 of my exploration of some of the underlying details of Cardinal pitching prospects. The question I am trying to answer is… Of the minor leagues prospects we've been watching, who has the most interesting pitch shape metrics (ie. the under the hood stuff)? We seem to be far enough into the season to have built up some stats that can stand up to Small Sample Size (SSS) scrutiny. Since I do the daily down on the Farm Reports, I see the various pitcher usage and line score results every day. That has made me curious about some things that might be going on beyond the line score.
Last week folks got a look at the pitchers in Palm Beach. What I neglected to mention then is that the set of top 10th percentile pitch metrics was 225 pitch types deep, and the Cardinals had 25 entries in the group or just a little below league average of 28. This becomes a little less mundane when we start looking at AAA numbers.
First, I raised the bar for AAA pitchers to 150 pitches minimum instead of 50 pitches as for Low-A pitchers. This to keep the set manageable. If I used the same 50 pitch minimum, the AAA set would include 1267 pitcher/pitch type combinations. I'm looking for the outliers and that is a large outlier group. That the AAA group is five times bigger tells me that a significant difference between AAA and Low-A pitching is volume.
Same methodology as last week. I am looking for pitchers have top 10th percentile metrics. This is a "who has a tool that sticks out" kind of question. Even with a 150 pitch minimum, I still get 382 pitcher/pitch combinations in the top tenth percentile (almost double the Low-A group). In an ugly turn of events, only 17 Cardinal entries are found in this table and as you will see, too many of them are outlier in a bad way (as in last decile, not top).
Like last week, the first table shows just the pitch profile, not the results (which follow in the next section).
