Economist Peter Schiff is making the case for stockpiling nickels, arguing the metal packed into each five-cent coin is now worth more than its face value and could make a better bet than U.S. Treasuries.
In a recent post on X, Schiff said the copper and nickel contained in modern nickels is worth about 7.76 cents — roughly 55% more than their face value — and suggested people buy them from banks before the U.S. government potentially stops producing them.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the other major stock indexes fell Tuesday, with oil prices rising following an attack on Saudi Arabia by Iran-backed Houthis. Energy stocks jumped while software lagged. Meanwhile, memory-chip leader SK Hynix (SKHY) rallied on the stock market today, breaking out past a new buy point.
Stocks were under pressure in the first day of the shortened trading week, with the Dow industrials diving nearly 700 points. This equates to a 1.3% drop. Oil major Chevron (CVX) stood out with a 2% pop, putting shares back in a buy zone.
But Amgen (AMGN) plunged 9% and dropped to its 50-day moving average. It comes after a disappointing trial results for an experimental Novartis (NVS) cardiovascular treatment were seen as a negative indicator for the former firm's own fledgling heart treatment olpasiran. Novartis, not a blue chip stock, plummeted more than 13%.
The S&P 500 also felt the heat, dropping 0.4%. A majority of sectors were lower, with communication services and healthcare being hit the hardest. Energy and utilities were posting the best gains.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite was also being punished, falling 0.5%. Booking (BKNG) and Shopify (SHOP) lagged due to drops of more than 5% and around 8%, respectively. CoreWeave (CRWV) showed strength by rising more than 8%.

Besides the artificial intelligence trade, investors have been obsessed with any macroeconomic news that hits headlines. And it's hard to find a story in recent weeks that captured the market's attention like the U.S surpassing $40 trillion in gross federal debt. By any measure, this is an absolutely mind-boggling number.
The debt balance has expanded by 377% in the past two decades. And it currently represents 123% of the country's total GDP figure. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that it will continue climbing, reaching $64 trillion by 2036.

Investors had better get used to hearing more about the U.S. national debt problem. Here's what this macro trend means for your portfolio in 2026 and beyond.
The U.S. has the world's largest and most advanced economy, driven by dominance in the technology sector. It controls the global reserve currency in the dollar. And it has the most robust and liquid capital markets. These advantageous traits support the argument that the nation can keep borrowing indefinitely.

In typical fashion, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has been an extremely volatile stock to own in the past five years. During this time, the share price fell at least 30% on three separate occasions.
But unlike historical trends, this electric vehicle (EV) stock has underperformed the S&P 500 index over the trailing half decade. It's up only 54% during this time (as of Sept. 4), while the benchmark has climbed 71%.

This business continues to live in the spotlight, which will certainly result in persistently heightened volatility for investors to deal with. Where will Tesla be in five years?
On Sept. 3, Tesla held an invite-only event launching its much-hyped Cybercab vehicle. The car design, which comes with no pedals and no steering wheel, was revealed nearly two years ago in October 2024. However, the company finally introduced a small number of Cybercabs to its Austin robotaxi fleet. On September 4, Bruker (NASDAQ:BRKR) said its energy and supercon technologies unit, Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies (or BEST), had struck a supply collaboration with Luvata Materials & Solutions to scale up production of RRP superconductors for magnetic confinement fusion. The deal lands right as governments and private developers from Europe to South Korea race to build fusion demonstration plants, and it comes a month after Bruker's core scientific instruments business showed its first real signs of stabilizing. Two very different stories are converging inside one stock.
The Luvata tie-up is not Bruker's first rodeo in fusion. BEST and Luvata previously supplied materials and expertise to ITER, the international fusion megaproject, and to the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, two of the most advanced superconducting plasma facilities ever built. Their RRP superconductors, wires built with the Rod-Restack Process to withstand field strengths between 12 and 20 Tesla, already run inside CERN's Large Hadron Collider and in ultra-high field NMR magnets. That track record matters now because fusion programs are ramping across Europe, the Americas, China, **** an and South Korea, and Gauss Fusion has already begun evaluating RRP superconductors for its Gauss Industrial Demonstrator and GIGA power plant platform.
The segment is already delivering. On August 4, Bruker reported that BEST revenue climbed 11.9% year over year to $74.2 million in the second quarter, with organic growth of 8.9% net of intercompany eliminations, while first-half BEST revenue rose 12.3% to $141 million. That growth showed up in Bruker's bottom line too. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 14.1% from 9% a year earlier, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share grew to $0.49 from $0.32, results strong enough that management kept its full-year non-GAAP EPS growth target of 15% to 17% intact.
None of that shows up on a GAAP basis. Bruker's second-quarter GAAP operating results swung to a $65.3 million loss, versus $11.9 million of GAAP operating income a year earlier, dragged down largely by a $134.9 million non-cash goodwill charge. GAAP diluted earnings per share swung to a loss of $0.41 from a profit of $0.05, and for the first half of 2026 the company posted a GAAP diluted loss per share of $0.39. Impairments do not spend cash, but they are a reminder that some of what Bruker paid for in past acquisitions is now being written down.

BRASILIA, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Brazil's wealthiest captured a record share of national income under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, tax-return data show, offering a striking counterpoint to the leftist leader's effort to convince voters that gains have been widely shared under his administration as he seeks reelection in October.
Lula has pointed to falling inequality, as measured by a record-low Gini coefficient ‌in 2024, and rising employment as evidence that his administration prioritizes poorer Brazilians.
But tax-return data paint a more complex picture: high interest rates, partly a consequence of increased government spending, fueled a boom in ‌financial income that disproportionately benefited the wealthy, even as stronger labor markets, wage gains, and social programs improved conditions at the bottom of the income distribution.
"If government benefits, on the one hand, are well targeted, they can have a positive social impact," said Otaviano Canuto, a former World Bank vice president.

Sept 2 (Reuters) - AI company Owkin said on Wednesday it has signed ‌a licensing deal with Germany's Boehringer ‌Ingelheim, giving the drugmaker access to its AI research platform and patient data to speed up discovery of drugs for cancer and immunity-related diseases.
The deal adds Boehringer to a growing ‌list of drugmakers using Owkin's AI technology, "K Pro". AstraZeneca licensed it in May, while Sanofi expanded its partnership with a five-year agreement in June.
Here are some more details:
• The deal builds on the companies' pilot project in ‌2025, in which Owkin used its patient tumor samples and related biological datasets to help Boehringer prioritize potential drug targets, the AI company's CEO, Thomas Clozel, told Reuters.

On August 21, Martin Marietta Materials (NYSE:MLM) completed its combination with Lhoist North America, a subsidiary of Lhoist Group and one of the country's leading producers of lime and industrial mineral products. The deal hands Martin Marietta more than 2 billion tons of high-quality limestone reserves and, according to the company, makes it the nation's leading producer of limestone products. It caps months of dealmaking that has quietly reshaped what kind of company Martin Marietta is becoming.
Lhoist North America serves steel manufacturing, infrastructure, heavy nonresidential construction and environmental solutions, markets Martin Marietta says it can now reach through a shared limestone base. Company leadership has pointed to lime's mission-critical role in steel production and water treatment, businesses that lean on Martin Marietta's expanding Specialties platform. In the second quarter, that platform delivered $152 million in revenue and $50 million in gross profit, both records, aided by the July 2025 Premier Magnesia acquisition and organic pricing gains. One example the company highlighted: its Woodville lime plant saw shipments exceed 2006 levels by 2% even as broader U.S. aggregates production stayed 25% below its prior peak, a sign of how differently lime demand behaves through a downturn.
The core aggregates business is not standing still either. Second-quarter revenue there hit $1.5 billion, up 16%, while total shipments rose 17% to 61.6 million tons on acquisitions and organic growth in the Central and West divisions. Organic shipments alone grew 2.3%, the fourth straight quarter of gains. Management raised full-year revenue guidance to a range of $7.2 billion to $7.4 billion to reflect the New Frontier Materials acquisition, while reaffirming adjusted EBITDA guidance of $2.36 billion to $2.5 billion. Data center activity in company-served markets climbed 90% year to date, warehouse construction rose 53%, and 70% of under-construction data center and manufacturing square footage sits within 55 miles of a Martin Marietta facility.
Growth has not come free. Average selling prices fell 2% on a headline basis in the second quarter, even though they rose 3.7% once adjusted for geographic mix, a gap that shows how much the picture depends on how you slice it. Reported aggregate gross profit of $418 million absorbed a $52 million noncash inventory step-up charge tied to purchase accounting, and organic cost of goods sold per ton rose 3.6%, including a 150 basis point hit from higher pass-through freight costs.

Riverwater Partners, an investment management company, released its 'Small Cap Strategy' Q2 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. The Small Cap Strategy underperformed the Russell 2000 in the second quarter as the benchmark experienced one of its strongest risk-on rallies in recent memory, although the strategy remained ahead year-to-date. The quarter was defined by accelerating AI investment, energy market disruptions, and renewed investor appetite for higher-beta stocks, creating headwinds for the firm's quality-focused approach and healthcare positioning. Despite this, stock selection contributed positively in energy, materials, and financials, while healthcare and consumer discretionary detracted due to the fund's disciplined avoidance of speculative businesses. Looking ahead, the firm remains cautiously optimistic, focusing on opportunities created by market dislocations, including AI infrastructure enablers, select consumer companies, healthcare innovators, and energy businesses trading below intrinsic value. The strategy continues to emphasize high-quality companies with strong management teams and attractive valuations, positioning the portfolio for a potential rotation away from speculative market leadership. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy highlighted Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) as a new holding. Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) is an Italian company that designs and distributes products and processes that offer integrated solutions for the biopharma and healthcare industries. On August 31, 2026, Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) closed at $21.03 per share. Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) gained 9.06% in the past month while its shares lost 5.39% over the past 52 weeks. Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) has a market capitalization of $5.85 billion and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $12.89 to $28.00.
Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy stated the following regarding Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"In addition, we initiated positions in Stevanato Group S.p.A. (NYSE:STVN), a leading global provider of drug containment, drug delivery, and diagnostic solutions to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life sciences industries. The stock sold off following the launch of oral GLP-1s, which many believe will end the need for injectable forms. Experts believe an expanding GLP-1 TAM, coupled with varying use cases, will necessitate ongoing need for injectable forms. Indeed, 25% of drugs approved in 2025 were biologics which will require injectable devices. This market overreaction offered an attractive entry valuation of 12.5x FY2026E EBITDA vs. STVN's historic multiple of 20X and its nearest comp West Pharmaceutical (WST) at approximately 22–25x."

On August 10, TPG Mortgage Investment Trust, Inc. (NYSE:MITT) and Cherry Hill Mortgage Investment Corporation (NYSE:CHMI) announced a definitive merger agreement in which MITT will acquire CHMI. Under the cash-and-stock deal, CHMI stockholders will receive 0.3063 shares of MITT common stock and $0.93 in cash per share, implying a value of $3.10 per CHMI share based on August 7 closing prices. This represents a 29% premium to CHMI's unaffected price and a 32% premium to its 30-day VWAP. Unanimously approved by both boards and slated to close in Q4 2026, the combined entity will operate as TPG Mortgage Investment Trust under CEO T.J. Durkin, expanding MITT's board to eight with two CHMI independent directors.
Following the announcement, Citizens downgraded Cherry Hill Mortgage from Outperform to Market Perform on August 11, removing its price target and noting that CHMI shares are now fairly valued around the $3.10 implied buyout price.
11 Tips to Get Approved for a Mortgage
In Q2 2026, TPG Mortgage Investment Trust, Inc. (NYSE:MITT) demonstrated stronger underlying financial execution. MITT reported GAAP net income of $0.29 per diluted share and Earnings Available for Distribution (EAD) of $0.24 per share, fully covering its $0.24 dividend. Book value rose to $10.00 per share with an economic return on equity of 2.7%. Its total investment portfolio stood at $7.7 billion with low economic leverage of 1.8x.
Cherry Hill Mortgage Investment Corporation (NYSE:CHMI), by contrast, generated GAAP net income of $0.04 per share and EAD of $0.15 per share, which fell short of covering its $0.10 quarterly dividend without factoring in preferred obligations. CHMI's GAAP book value ended at $3.16 per share, while its portfolio leverage was significantly higher at 5.02x. MITT clearly enters the deal from a position of relative operational stability, better dividend coverage, and lower balance sheet leverage.

US stocks moderated from earlier gains in midday trading on Friday as investors digested Kevin Warsh's first keynote address at the annual Jackson Hole Symposium, with the Fed chairman's comments interpreted as mildly hawkish in the near term.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) slipped below the flat line, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) slide 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined by 0.4% after rising by as much as 0.5% earlier in the day.
In his speech, Warsh stated that inflation was running too high and that price stability would be the Fed's predominant focus. Even if market participants didn't necessarily get all of the clarity they were looking for, Warsh's comments were taken as hawkish enough to send yields on short-term Treasurys higher by several basis points.
In the equities market, investors continued to digest Nvidia's (NVDA) blowout earnings report and growth projections from Wednesday, while shares in Marvell Technology (MRVL) fell on its own second quarter figures. PayPal (PYPL) lost more than 10% on the news that Advent and Stripe have backed out of a proposed $50 billion takeover.

Andy Baehr, GSR's managing director of **** et management, says bitcoin's $80,000 breakout marks a new market regime. He argues the crypto trading firm watched a stagnant summer flip into real momentum within days.

With Nvidia's (NVDA) stock stuck in neutral for the better part of the summer as investors have fretted about peak artificial intelligence growth, the chip darling decided to take one swift measure to silence the naysayers.
The action: serving up a rare long-term outlook that blew everyone on the Street away.
Nvidia said late Wednesday after reporting its fiscal second quarter earnings that it sees 70% revenue growth for fiscal year 2028. This was above ******* yst forecasts for 45% growth. The sales gain would be larger if not for memory chip shortages, said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
"The first ever year ahead guidance is the real news," Stifel ******* yst Ruben Roy wrote in a note. "We think the more revealing point is why they guided at all. Management framed it as getting customers, shareholders and the supply chain onto the same set of information, which in our view makes this as much a supply-chain coordination device as a forecast, and reassure suppliers to commit capacity and customers that BoM inflation was being absorbed too via the fiscal year 2028 ~72-73% gross margin guide (down from mid-70% prior)."
Shares of Nvidia rose nearly 8% in premarket trading on the results and upbeat outlook. Prior to the earnings report, Nvidia shares had slightly underperformed the S&P 500's year-to-date gain of about 14%.

On August 14, 2026, Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX) said that it is withdrawing its nearly year-long takeover bid for rival Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK) after Genco demanded terms Diana said: "no credible acquirer could realistically meet."
This ends one of the shipping industry's longest-running takeover fights, with Diana walking away rather than meeting Genco's final asking price. Did Genco successfully defend a fair valuation of its business, or did its board just let a real deal slip away?
Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX)'s final offer would have valued Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK) at around $36.91 a share using Diana's August 13 closing price, a 42% premium to Genco's closing price that day. CEO Semiramis Paliou said Diana "gave this process every opportunity to succeed." Diana remains Genco's largest shareholder, keeping pressure on the board even after formally withdrawing its bid. Diana shares rose 3.2% on the news.
Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX) called Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK)'s counter-demands, including $27.50 a share in cash plus $2.00 to show upcoming dividends and three Diana shares per Genco share, "convoluted." But walking away after nearly a year of tender offers and a proxy fight also means Diana spent significant time and resources pursuing a deal it ultimately couldn't close.
Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK)'s board held firm on its valuation through a tender offer and a proxy fight, and shareholders backed the board by voting against Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX)'s remaining board nominees in June. It shows Genco investors were comfortable rejecting Diana's terms rather than accepting a discounted deal.

Compound interest, or compounding, is quite simply your money making money. More technically, it is the interest you earn on top of your principal and interest over time.
To keep it simple, let's look at how compounding works in a bank savings account. Say you set aside $10,000 in a savings account that pays out a 3% interest rate.

Sandisk produces NAND flash memory, the high-speed storage technology that powers solid-state drives (SSDs). In the AI infrastructure era, these products have become indispensable because AI data centers require vast amounts of fast, dense storage to hold training data and inference workloads. AI-driven demand has fueled NAND prices sharply in recent quarters, shifting Sandisk's revenue mix toward enterprise data center customers. Revenue and margins are expanding dramatically as sales surge and pricing power returns to the storage specialist.
Filings show that Tepper initiated the Sandisk position during the first quarter of 2026 and subsequently exited completely sometime in the second quarter. While exact entry and exit prices are private, the timing alone implies substantial gains.

Nielsen's operating approach is based on creating an all-in-one measurement and verification framework for advertisers around the world. By incorporating DoubleVerify's verification capabilities into the Nielsen ONE platform, the merged company will provide marketers with a single portal for measuring reach, frequency, viewability, and ad fraud all at once.
Domestically, the combined structure focuses on Connected TV (CTV) and retail media networks, where diverse viewing patterns and verification gaps have caused buyer friction. Internationally, the transaction could use Nielsen's extensive enterprise partnerships in Europe and Asia-Pacific to expand DoubleVerify's verification footprint into high-growth digital areas without incurring the costs of setting up independent sales units.
Following the transaction, prominent Wall Street firms reset ratings around $13.60, indicating limited upside and seeing the stock as a merger arbitrage trade with limited growth potential. Q2 2026 showed only 3% revenue growth but solid profitability, with a 34% adjusted EBITDA margin, substantial free cash flow, no debt, $210 million in cash, and adjusted EPS of $0.22 versus the $0.11 projected.
Meanwhile, other shareholder law firms are looking whether the $13.60 deal undervalues DoubleVerify Holdings Inc. (NYSE:DV) or comes with limited rights, which may lead to demands for better terms or further details. That said, hedge fund exposure for DoubleVerify Holdings Inc. (NYSE:DV) rose ahead of the transaction, increasing from 32 in Q4 2025 to 40 in Q1 2026. Also, Nielsen's private equity owners, Elliott Investment Management and Brookfield Business Partners, saw the drop in valuation as an attractive entry point to amass software-like recurring revenues and high-margin verification businesses.

US stocks fell on Thursday after President Trump vowed to squeeze Iran economically, sending oil prices higher, while bond yields also rebounded after the US Treasury's surprise move to intervene in the market.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 0.6%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) slipped 0.3%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined by 0.5% after all three major indexes notched winning sessions on Wednesday.
Markets reeled after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stepped in to lower long-dated government bond yields, which could complicate Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's intention to allow the markets to do some of the tightening for the Fed.
However, Treasurys ticked back up in early trading on Thursday. The 10-year yield (^TNX) rose by 5 basis points to 4.70%, while the 30-year yield (^TYX) increased by 5 basis points to 5.25%. Bitcoin (BTC-USD), meanwhile, surged over 10% and reached the $70,000 level for the first time since early June.
At the same time, more attention turned to the United States' financial health as the national debt surpassed $40 trillion, having more than doubled in less than a decade.

Seller concessions are at near-record highs in today's buyer's market, so there's a good chance you can negotiate some credits or other help from your lender if you're buying a home.
Just be aware that all major loan programs limit concessions to a small share of the purchase price. It's important to know the limits because if you ask for a higher amount, your lender will reduce your concessions at closing, and you'll get less than you expected.
Becoming familiar with the seller concession limits for your loan program before talking with the seller puts you in a stronger negotiating position.

The dollar index (DXY00) fell to a 2.25-month low today and is down by -0.18%. The dollar extended last week's losses today after a raft of weaker-than-expected US economic news dialed back expectations of tighter Fed policy. The chance of a Fed rate hike next month has dropped to 31% from about 75% in late July.
The dollar is also being undercut by reduced safe-haven demand as President Trump appears to have given up on plans for any new major military attack on Iran for the time being, favoring economic pressure instead. Treasury Secretary Bessent said last Friday that the administration will soon announce unprecedented economic measures against Iran that "have never been seen in the history of economic isolation of a country." Yet, the military conflict continues as there were reports that Iran attacked two Abu Dhabi oil vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday night.
