MANILA, Philippines (AP) — American special operations forces are ready to step up warfighting-readiness exercises with counterparts in the Philippines and other countries in Asia to further strengthen a security alliance and help deter a major conflict in the region, a U.S. military official said Thursday.
Adm. Frank Bradley, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, is in the Philippines after a trip to South Korea. He will then head to ***** an for talks with military officials.
He is the latest American military top brass to visit key Asian allies in recent weeks to reassure them of Washington's commitment to the region given the U.S. preoccupation with the war in Iran.
Bradley's command, which has about 80,000 personnel and is based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, undertakes the U.S. military's most sensitive and dangerous covert operations. The majority of his forces are deployed in more than 80 countries worldwide, Bradley said.
He discussed with Filipino counterparts the Philippine military's continuing effort to modernize, intensify combat exercises with the U.S. and other allies and broaden an arc of security alliances to deter China's increasingly hostile actions in the South China Sea.

It wasn't a particularly entertaining ordeal, but the Minnesota Vikings came away from their first preseason game with several positives. On a sunny day at MetLife Stadium, the Vikings set the tone early in a 13-10 win, offering optimism that their offseason goal of improving the run game could translate into on-field production.
Of course, improving the run game is only one factor in returning Minnesota's offense to prominence. Kevin O'Connell wanted improved quarterback play, and while Kyler Murray only threw three passes, Carson Wentz showed command of the offense that could lead one to believe that although one quarterback competition is settled, another could quietly be brewing.

Tied after nine innings of baseball, the Orioles and Rays each turned to a member of their bullpen to try and keep the other team from scoring. For the Rays, it was Bryan Baker. Baker has transformed himself into a leading closer this year, posting a 1.55 ERA and a league-leading 34 saves. His last 21 appearances have come in Rays wins. For the Orioles, it was Cam Sanders. In 2025-26, Sanders made 15 appearances for the Pirates with an 8.44 ERA and 15 walks in 16 innings. The Orioles claimed him on waivers on July 13th. Which pitcher would you take?
Baker started the 10th inning against his former team with free (and pinch) runner Colton Cowser at second base. He was facing the top of the order, which naturally meant Tyler O'Neill. The Miami Dolphins' first preseason game against the Washington Commanders was a mixed bag, leaving me concerned about our overall roster depth despite solid performances from the starters. The opening drive was a standout, featuring impressive play from Malik Willis, De'Von Achane, and Caleb Douglas, highlighted by Douglas's spectacular one-handed catch despite defensive pass interference. I was also encouraged to see guard Jonah Savaiinaea finally showing the development we hoped for when he was drafted last year. Aug 15 (Reuters) - Russian troops have taken control of 19 settlements in southeastern Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions over their summer campaign, the Russian defence ministry said on Saturday.
In a statement, the ministry cited a report by Pyotr Bolgarev, commander of the eastern group of forces. It did not name the settlements.
Separately, the ministry said its forces had recently taken control of the settlement of Rybalskoye in Zaporizhzhia region, news agency Interfax reported.
Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield reports.

The Commanders 2026 preseason opener against the Dolphins went pretty much as planned. Washington gave up an opening drive score, mainly with the second-team defense against Miami's starters. They locked in after that and didn't allow any more points for the rest of the game in a 20-7 victory at Northwest Stadium.
What really caught my attention was the lack of sloppy play — which is usually prevalent in the preseason opener. Although coordinators David Blough and Daronte Jones kept things pretty vanilla, the execution was good and I didn't see a lot of bad mistakes. To me, this was the biggest win of the evening.
Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.
The rookie running back duo turned out to be the highlight of the evening for Washington. Robert Henry showed vision and burst while Fatman Allen showed patience and wiggle. Both men found the end zone in the opener.
Martin, playing safety with the second-team defense, looked the part of a starter against Miami. He had a beautiful tackle on Dolphins running back De'Von Achane on the first drive and got an interception on the sideline early in the second quarter. He was around the football quite a bit early in the game.

It appears that his time as a second-string quarterback may have served him well.
And the Dolphins are probably going to need Willis to keep up his strong performances, because a big part of the reason why the Dolphins lost on Friday was due to the rest of the team's quarterback play during the game. Preseason games are primarily a time to get inexperienced players and backups action to help develop them and determine which players are good enough to make the final roster.
That meant a lot of playing time for Cam Miller and Quinn Ewers, and neither looked great. Ewers was a dismal 1-of-8 passing for 27 yards, also tossing one interception. Meanwhile, Miller managed just a couple more completions, going 3-of-11 for 39 yards. But he also tossed two interceptions. PEORIA — Kylar Fenton is coming back to the Peoria Rivermen for the 2026-27 SPHL season, and the team would love a repeat performance from the defenseman who helped them win the regular-season ******* le.
Fenton joined the Rivermen out of college for their playoff run in the 2024-25 SPHL playoffs, then spent his first full pro season with Peoria on its 2025-26 team that came within one game of the President's Cup.

The Miami Dolphins open their preseason schedule Friday night against the Washington Commanders at 7:00 p.m. ET, and this will be the first professional head coaching appearance for Jeff Hafley. Although just an exhibition, it'll be a great opportunity for him and his young team to start a new direction for a franchise rebuilding, yet again.
Hafley will lead a roster in which 63.7% are entering their third NFL season or less, which accounts for 58 out of 91 players. The average age of this roster is 25 years old, which is the youngest of any Dolphins' team entering the preseason in the last five years.
Part of that youth will be several undrafted rookie free agents who could see plenty of action against the Commanders, and here are four to keep an eye on in their quest to battle and make the 53-man roster.
Perhaps the leading UDFA at the moment with a legitimate shot at making the team is Louis Moore, the safety from the 2025 Indiana Hoosiers National Championship team. Moore has versatility in his field alignment, which is very valuable and coveted by Hafley. He can play deep at free safety, up in the box, and in the slot. He also played wide receiver in junior college prior to transferring to Indiana, as he has great ball-tracking skills, evident by his six interceptions in 2025.

He didn't provide much information on who would play in Friday's preseason contest against the Dolphins, preferring to hold that information until game day. It's safe to say, though, that first-team guys who work a ton in the joint practices probably won't play in the game.

MOSCOW, Aug 12 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia will respond in kind if European countries start to seize Russian merchant vessels and the commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet said his forces were ready to "inspect and detain" foreign vessels from what he called hostile states.
The comments, which Putin made as he oversaw navy drills in Russia's far east, come as the EU tries to ratchet up pressure on Russia's so-called shadow fleet, expanding sanctions against hundreds of vessels and detaining some ships and their crews for checks. Some European governments have said they are exploring tougher maritime enforcement measures against ships suspected of sanctions evasion.
"We can see that the authorities of certain countries, in violation of international maritime law, are attempting to restrict the movement of our economic operators' vessels..., and have recently gone so far as to consider the possibility of seizing our vessels and selling off the property they have plundered from us," Putin said.
"Naturally, this is nothing less than piracy and robbery. And if this begins to be put into practice, we shall be forced to respond in kind. And not necessarily in those waters where raids on our ships and vessels are planned, but wherever we ourselves deem it necessary and appropriate."

However, one of Miami's most productive veterans is not on the field today — and we may not be seeing him in action for awhile, according to head coach Jeff Hafley.

The Miami Dolphins have left South Florida for a joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Wednesday before the two teams meet on Friday at FedEx Field for their first of three preseason games.
Ahead of the practice session, which will take place at the Commanders' BigBear.ai Performance Center in Ashburn, Virginia, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley addressed the media and revealed defensive lineman Zach Sieler is dealing with an injury, which kept him out of practice on Monday.
It's unclear what the injury is, but Hafley did reveal that Sieler is week-to-week.
The 30-year-old is entering his eighth season with the Dolphins and has the biggest cap hit of any player on the team for 2026 ($11.42 million). Hopefully, this injury isn't too serious, and he can return to the practice field soon.
If this injury is more of a long-term issue, Miami will have to rely on Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers at defensive tackle. However, it will give them a better look at Matthew Butler, Alex Huntley, Fatorma Mulbah and Keith Cooper Jr.
