Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa spent the summer keeping Republican Gov. Greg Abbott within arm's reach — never letting him lead by more than a few points.
However, two new polls disagree on whether that's still true, and the answer may decide how competitive the race really is.
A Sept. 15 poll from Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. showed that Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is leading his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, by 7 points, 48% to 41%, with 8% of voters undecided.
The Mason-Dixon had a 4-point margin of error, with Libertarian Pat Dixon at 1% and Independent Jenn Mack Raphoon at 2%. It surveyed 625 registered Texas voters Sept. 8-10 who said they are likely to vote in the November 2026 election.
The poll follows a Sept. 13 poll from SoCal Strategies that showed Abbott still in a strong position in his bid for a fourth term, leading Hinojosa 52% to 44%.

WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - U.S. homebuilder sentiment dropped to a one-year low in September as rising mortgage rates dampen demand for housing, a survey showed on Wednesday.
The National **** ociation of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market index fell three points to 32 this month, the lowest reading since September 2025, from 35 in August. The decline also reflected labor shortages amid an immigration crackdown as well as rising costs because of tariffs on imports.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index easing to 34. Sentiment is likely to remain subdued in the months ahead as mortgage rates have been rising in tandem with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield.
The 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaged 6.76% last week, the highest level in more than a year, up from 6.71% in the prior week, data from mortgage finance firm Freddie Mac showed.
The 10-year government bond yield on Tuesday hit 5.041%, the highest since July 2007, driven in part by expectations that the Federal Reserve would on Wednesday start raising interest rates to quell inflation that is being driven by the U.S.-Israel war with Iran. Longer-dated yields have also risen amid concerns over the nation's ballooning debt.

Retail sales jumped 1.2% last month after a revised 0.5% drop in July, which was the first decline in nine months, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales, which are mostly goods and are not adjusted for inflation, rebounding 0.8% after a previously reported 0.6% drop in July. Estimates ranged from as low as a 0.2% gain to as high as a 1.1% increase.
Last month's increase also partially reflected higher gasoline prices, which lifted receipts at service stations.
Households have continued to spend despite stubbornly high inflation because of the oil price shock and supply chain strains from the U.S.-led war with Iran. Consumers have, however, become more selective and are seeking lower-priced goods. Consumer sentiment deteriorated this month.

Sept 16 (Reuters) - A majority of younger U.S. healthcare workers plan to explore new jobs within the next year, even as many want long-term stability with a single employer, a survey released on Wednesday found.
The findings highlight a retention challenge for U.S. healthcare employers already facing a projected shortage of nearly 500,000 workers by 2038, as an aging workforce and rising demand put pressure on staffing.
About 70% of Generation Z healthcare workers, generally those born between 1997 and 2012, said they expect to explore new roles over the next year, according to the survey by Harris Poll, commissioned by education services company Strategic Education and Workforce Edge.
Yet 65% said they ultimately hope to remain with one employer for five years or more, while nearly all said job stability was important to them.
Across all age groups, 59% of healthcare workers said they expect to seek a new role over the next year, the survey found.

Investors expect that PE direct investments and co-investments will overtake traditional fund investing as the largest capital source within five years, according to a survey that exposes the shifting dynamics in LP-GP relations.
Investment bank Houlihan Lokey's LP Compass, its first survey of the combined co-investment and directs market, polled 56 of the market's most active buyers. Some 78% expect combined volumes to set a record in 2026, beating the $215 billion the bank estimates the market reached last year: a record $161 billion in directs and $54 billion in co-investment.

As we have seen the past two years, a 12-team playoff is forgiving when it comes to early season losses. An early stumble does not have to result in panic as the expanded field allows for a mulligan or two – or three.

While Arch Manning rallied the Longhorns from a 23-3 deficit after three quarters to stun Ohio State and replace the Buckeyes atop the polls, Ryan Day's team is not about to disappear from the playoff conversation. There is much sting for sure in blowing a 20-point lead, but the larger picture is one that must be in focus because everything remains on the table.
Besides, fans in Columbus, perhaps more than any fan base in the country, know what it is like to have their team rebound following a most disappointing setback. See the 2024 loss against "The Team Up North" and what happened after that.

The Bemidji State men's hockey team's top-line center was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year in the Coaches and Media Polls.
Bemidji State was picked to finish fifth in both polls. Michigan Tech was selected as the league's top team in both polls as well.
Peer, a native of Burlington, Ontario, had 20 goals and 16 ******* ists last year in his first season with the Beavers. He transferred from the University of New Brunswick (U Sports) ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Naturally, Peer was also selected to be on both of the All-CCHA Preseason Teams. Among coaches, Peer is joined by Michigan Tech forwards Max Koskipirrti and Isaac Gordon and Bowling Green's Ben Doran. WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's public approval rating rose from a record low, while Americans voiced growing support for Democrats gaining power in the U.S. Congress in a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken in the days after the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention last week.
The four-day poll showed 63% of Americans - including four in 10 Republicans and nine in 10 Democrats - disapproved of Trump's offer made in his convention speech that he would ensure all Americans get a $5,000 dividend if Republicans retain control of the U.S. Congress in November's midterm elections.
The survey gathered responses from 1,143 Americans nationwide and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction.
Some 35% of Americans give Trump a thumbs up for his performance in the White House, up from 33% in an August 28 to 31 Reuters/Ipsos poll, the lowest of his political career.

LSU visiting Ole Miss would likely have been considered the top matchup for Week 3 of the college football season with the Tigers ranked No. 7 and the Rebels right behind them at No. 8 in the AP Top 25 poll.
But Saturday's game also comes with a significant dose of intrigue and potential drama with Lane Kiffin returning to Oxford, Mississippi after leaving Ole Miss for LSU before the end of last season.
How Kiffin will be greeted by Rebels fans is the great question leading up to Saturday night's SEC clash. Some are even concerned that the tensions could get out of hand with outraged fans wanting to lash out at Kiffin.
Included among those is Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. Well, sort of. While he acknowledged that feelings will surely be heightened, the governor joked about what measures might be necessary to ensure the safety of Kiffin and the LSU football team.
"I'm thinking about having to send him in on an F-16 and maybe the team on a C-130," Landry said to ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "Security is going to be really tight. You know, we might need the National Guard out there to protect our team. I think it's going to be an interesting weekend."

The Abilene Christian Wildcats have dropped out of the FCS Top 25 rankings following their latest loss in Week 2 of the 2026 college football season.
The Wildcats — who fell in a 26-7 loss in their home opener to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Saturday night — slid out of the rankings entirely from their previously held No. 23 spot in the latest edition of the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll.
It marks the end of a 30-week streak of consecutive appearances in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll for Abilene Christian, which will head into its Week 3 contest unranked for the first time since September 2024.

Our inaugural "Team of the Month" poll came down to the wire between a strip-sack touchdown and a toe-tapping deflected catch along the sidelines.
Westwood football's Levon "Trey" Simmons III claimed TC Palm's August "Play of the Month" honors, narrowly edging out Martin County's fumble return touchdown with 55.6 percent of the vote.
On the play, Westwood quarterback Elize Pierre rolled out to his left and attempted to complete a pass to junior running back Najja Martin. The ball bounced off Martin's hands and up into the air after a collision with a Palm Beach Gardens defender.
Simmons swooped into grab the reception and got two feet in bounds before stepping out of play. Westwood went on to defeat Palm Beach Gardens 21-7 on Aug. 24.

Westwood football's Levon "Trey" Simmons III claimed TC Palm's August "Play of the Month" honors, narrowly edging out Martin County's fumble return touchdown with 55.6 percent of the vote.
On the play, Westwood quarterback Elize Pierre rolled out to his left and attempted to complete a pass to junior running back Najja Martin. The ball bounced off Martin's hands and up into the air after a collision with a Palm Beach Gardens defender.
Simmons swooped into grab the reception and got two feet in bounds before stepping out of play. Westwood went on to defeat Palm Beach Gardens 21-7 on Aug. 24.

Three Polk County runners won their individual cross country meet on Saturday, and two county quarterbacks excelled in both running and passing to lead their team and are among the top athletes in this week's Tremendous 10 poll. They joined by volleyball players and a boys golfer to fill out the list.

Democratic state parties announced Monday that they are launching an operation for the midterm elections they're calling the "New Battlefield Project," intended to recruit 10,000 volunteers to guard polling places in case armed federal officers show up.
Activists are planning mass protests if the Trump administration tries to interfere with voting or ballot counting. And legal scholars are distributing white papers advising judges what they should do if the government tries to seize ballots.
The unprecedented efforts are in response to President Donald Trump's equally unprecedented moves to interfere in this year's midterm elections, which include attempts to impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote and directing the Postal Service to play a central role in deciding which voters should get a mail ballot.

Kentucky football's first loss of the season was a tale of two halves. In the first half, they controlled the ball, forced turnovers, and limited the Alabama Crimson Tide's offense. In the second half, Alabama controlled the game, and pulled away for a 45-17 win over the Wildcats.
It was a closer game than the score indicates, and there were some promising things to take away from it, but a loss is a loss, and Kentucky's brutal schedule means they have to beat some of these good teams to even get to .500.
Most of the rest of the SEC had a successful Saturday to some degree. The conference is showing its strength so far, and it was reflected in the coaches poll, where nine SEC teams were in the top 25.

The previous week of the 2026 high school football season was nearly a perfect one for this sports reporter.
I went 8-1 last week, only missing St. Edward's 30-24 victory at Okeechobee. But even with that blemish, I was able to extend the cushion over the audience to a four-game lead over the course of the season.

Like in the coaches poll, there were some major moves in this week's **** ociated Press college football poll.
Texas is the new No. 1 in the media poll released Sunday afternoon. The Longhorns took down the preseason top-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State on Saturday night.
Alabama advanced to No. 10 after entering Saturday's trip to Kentucky at 12th. The Crimson Tide blew past the Wildcats with a 32-0 second half to win 45-17.

Erie Mason volleyball player Addie Homrich was the winner with 4,226.
She had to hold off Summerfield football player Hudson Crots (3,052) and Monroe swimmer Karis Beaton (1,558).
