Over-concentrating savings in a 401(k) creates a liquidity trap. Every dollar locked away carries a 10% penalty plus taxes if withdrawn early.
A spouse earning $45,000 should choose a Roth IRA over a Traditional 401(k), since low tax brackets make tax deferral nearly worthless today.
A Roth IRA conversion ladder and IRS Section 72(t) payments both allow penalty-free early retirement account access for households that over-saved in tax-deferred accounts.
Saving $1 million for retirement is a genuine milestone worth celebrating. Anyone who reaches that number is officially a millionaire, and the habits that got them there, paying themselves first and resisting lifestyle creep, are habits worth keeping for the long run. Once the celebrations settle, smart savers start asking harder questions. The Redditor highlighted below is doing exactly that: wondering whether continuing to pile money into a 401(k) is still the right move once seven figures are on the scoreboard.
After crossing that threshold, a conversation with a financial planner becomes more than just a good idea. The questions go well beyond monthly budgets. Choosing the right securities, maintaining a sound **** et allocation, and optimizing for taxes are the levers that can turn a first million into a far larger fortune over time.

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has addressed speculation surrounding his first of two touchdown celebrations during Thursday Night Football against the Carolina Panthers, firmly denying any connection to his arrest earlier this year.
During the celebration, Jacobs was seen standing in the end zone with his hands behind his back. Many viewers quickly interpreted this gesture as a reference to his arrest after he was charged with misdemeanor battery and destruction of property following an alleged incident involving a woman at his Green Bay home.
In September, Jacobs pleaded no contest to the charges. He was convicted of battery and received a deferred judgment agreement for the destruction of property charge. As a result, he spent the first six games of the season on the commissioner's exempt list and could face further NFL discipline.
After the game, Jacobs addressed the celebration, clarifying that it was inspired by the gospel song "Break Every Chain." He expressed his frustration that people were attempting to **** ociate the gesture with his legal troubles.
"They didn't even get the whole celebration," Jacobs told ESPN. "It was (expletive) one second that they just showed me."

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday evening temporarily allowing the use of red-dyed diesel on public roads and deferring the federal excise tax on that fuel through the end of the year, a move aimed at lowering costs for truckers and farmers facing record-high diesel prices.
Red-dyed diesel is chemically the same product as standard highway diesel, but carries a red dye to mark it as off-road fuel — meaning it is not subject to the 24.4-cent-per-gallon federal excise tax that applies to diesel sold at the pump for road use, such as for tractors and heavy machinery. Using it in highway vehicles has been illegal, carrying penalties for tax evasion, according to CNBC.
According to the White House, the order instructs the Treasury Secretary to hold off on collecting federal excise taxes on highway use of dyed diesel between October 5 and December 31, 2026, and to do so without charging interest or imposing penalties. The Treasury is also directed to direct the Internal Revenue Service not to impose penalties for on-road use of dyed diesel during that period. The order further instructs officials to explore pathways, including legislation, to eliminate the deferred tax obligations entirely.
The White House projected that a trucker who tops off an 18-wheeler's tank with 250 gallons stands to save over $100 on a single fill-up, provided the trucker's state suspends its own diesel tax as well. On top of the federal levy, each state levies its own diesel excise tax, and those state-level taxes average out to 35.5 cents per gallon, according to CNN.
The order also directs the Secretary of Agriculture to coordinate with agricultural cooperatives and rural fuel distributors to ensure adequate dyed diesel distribution in high-demand areas, and the Secretary of Transportation to engage with state governments and industry stakeholders. The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs was directed to encourage states to adopt corresponding policies.

The Treasury Department said that over 60 million children have been automatically enrolled in Trump Accounts, according to guidance filed with the Federal Register.
"Millions of children have already enrolled in Trump Accounts. With automatic enrollment, over 60 million more eligible children now have an account ready to be claimed," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
The idea behind Trump Accounts is to give children a head start on building wealth. The accounts are a new type of tax-deferred individual retirement account for children. Any eligible child under 18 with a valid Social Security number can open an account, while U.S. citizens born between 2025 and 2028 may also qualify for a one-time $1,000 contribution from the government.
Until now, parents or guardians were required to sign up for accounts on their children's behalf. Participation has been low, however.

When planning for retirement, most people account for housing, travel, daily living expenses and general healthcare costs. However, it's easy to overlook one retirement expense: the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, commonly known as IRMAA.
If you have a large pension, substantial tax-deferred retirement accounts, or other variables that may elevate your retirement income, IRMAA is a factor you may encounter starting in your mid-60s. While it is unlikely to derail a well-constructed financial plan, failing to understand IRMAA and how to plan ahead for it can lead to frustrating annual surprises.
In the United States, most adults become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. Medicare is divided into several parts, but IRMAA specifically applies to two of them: Part B (which covers doctor visits, outpatient care and preventive services) and Part D (prescription drug coverage).
For the average retiree, Medicare Part B carries a standard monthly base premium ($202.90 per month in 2026). Part D coverage varies depending on the specific private plan selected, but carries a national average base premium of roughly $38.99 per month. Combined, a standard retiree pays roughly $242 per month for basic Part B and Part D coverage, per Medicare.
However, Medicare premiums are not one-size-fits-all. If your income exceeds specific threshold limits set by the federal government, you will be required to pay an additional surcharge on top of your base monthly premiums. That additional surcharge is IRMAA.

Adobe (ADBE) reported a record fiscal Q3 2026 and raised its fiscal 2026 revenue and earnings targets. Revenue rose 13% as reported to $6.76 billion, above the $6.70 billion the company had guided. But the key figure that did not move is the one to hold the quarter against: the fiscal 2026 target for growth in ending annualized recurring revenue, or ARR, still 10.2%.
The fiscal 2026 revenue target moved to $26.576 billion to $26.626 billion from $26.55 billion. The interim CFO sized that at around $50 million at the midpoint, a little less than the $60 million revenue beat in fiscal Q3. The gap is a slight currency headwind in fiscal Q4, and the interim CFO said nothing in the business changed. Non-GAAP earnings per share of $6.13 cleared the $6.08 guide, and the fiscal 2026 non-GAAP EPS target moved to $24.45 to $24.50.
Total ending ARR was $27.5 billion, up 11.2% year over year at the end of fiscal Q3, and the fiscal 2026 year-end growth target for it stayed at 10.2%. Remaining performance obligations, or RPO, grew 8% year over year. One ***** yst called that the first single-digit reading since early fiscal 2023, and down from the prior quarter. The interim CFO tied the RPO figure to the push to acquire new users through the freemium model, and said RPO typically steps up in fiscal Q4 and then stays roughly flat for three quarters.
Another ***** yst put net new ARR down 36% to 37% year over year. Management's answer: Adobe has sent a portion of its traffic into the freemium path to acquire users, and will calibrate when to convert them into paying ARR. The CEO said the company was happy to skip pricing actions that might have brought short-term relief but matter less than new user adoption. Creative freemium monthly active users, which include Firefly, Express and the web and mobile versions of Photoshop, crossed 100 million, growing more than 70% year over year.
So far the paying signal is small against the book. AI-first ending ARR passed $650 million, growing more than 150% year over year, which is about 2.4% of the $27.5 billion total. Management says credit consumption is accelerating quarter on quarter across Creative Cloud and the Firefly app, and Acrobat AI ***** istant monthly active users doubled from the prior quarter. Management gave no date for resuming the pricing actions it deferred in Creative Cloud, and said it is constantly calibrating the best conversion point.

For its Q3 FY26, ABM Industries Inc. (NYSE:ABM) posted a record topline figure of $2.3 billion. With year-over-year acquisitive growth and organic expansion of 2.1% each, the total jump in sales was 4.2%. The company's adjusted EBITDA for the quarter climbed 11% to $139.6 million, compared to Q3 FY25. Adjusted net income stood at $61.5 million, exhibiting a 19% growth and translating into an adjusted diluted EPS of $1.04. ABM generated operating cash flows for the third quarter totaling $146.8 million, while free cash flow stood at $128.4 million.
Dmitry Kalinovsky/Shutterstock.com
Third quarter print revealed that majority of the topline growth was concentrated across the company's Aviation, and Manufacturing & Distribution (M&D) segments, which expanded 12.5% and 17.6% respectively. Performance within the M&D segment was driven by strong technology market trends, with further support coming from ABM's acquisition of WGNstar. Aviation segment got a boost from robust demand for air travel and healthy progress around the company's newly secured London Heathrow contract.
Prudent cost management resulted in around $3 million reduction in ongoing corporate costs compared to the previous year. Overall growth in bottom line can be attributed to higher operating profits across most segments, a lower tax bill, and cut down in corporate overhead. Some of these were offset by rising interest burden due to the financing of the WGNstar transaction. The company's share buyback initiative was another factor that led to a 25% rise in diluted EPS for the quarter.
The Education segment's revenue held steady. Business & Industry (B&I) slipped 2.6%, largely in line with expectations, due to the previously disclosed loss of a major UK client and ongoing weakness along the US west coast. Technical Solutions (ATS) growth was hampered by certain deferred projects.

Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after being convicted of six dogfighting-related charges, according to a Department of Justice release on Thursday.
Additionally, Johnson — who was in the NFL from 1994-99 and spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants — will have three years of supervised release. Plus, he'll have to pay a $30,000 fine.
Johnson was indicted in March 2025 and convicted in an Oklahoma federal court in August of last year. He had been running a large-scale dogfighting ring based in the state since at least 2007, according to the DOJ, which cited trial testimony.
Johnson, 55, previously pleaded guilty in 2004 to Oklahoma dogfighting offenses. Back then, he received a five-year deferred sentence in state court, according to ESPN's Thursday report, which cited Oklahoma court records.
His most recent operation, known as "Mal Kant Kennels," consisted of breeding and selling pit bulls who would fight around the country, with Johnson profiting from the trafficking. The 190 dogs the authorities seized from Johnson's property are the most ever rescued from a single individual in a federal dogfighting case, per the DOJ.

I'm turning 68 shortly and plan to wait to claim my Social Security at age 70 to maximize the monthly benefit. I also plan to retire at the end of the year, if not sooner (so in three months or less). Does withdrawing from my traditional IRAs (current balance is $215,000) to reduce the income tax on my RMDs outweigh the benefit of keeping those withdrawals invested and growing tax-deferred? My understanding is that if I withdraw amounts up to my standard deduction, then those amounts would be tax-free.
– Austen
Retirement withdrawals, Social Security benefits, required minimum distribution (RMDs), taxes … there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to making decisions about your retirement income. Reducing the amount of money that's subject to RMDs can help minimize your taxes once they kick in. This may also help avoid taxes on your Social Security benefits.
If you don't need the money now, but want to reduce RMDs later, one of the best moves might be converting a portion of your IRA to a Roth IRA each year. That can help reduce future required withdrawals and allow your money to grow tax-free, though there can be tax consequences for certain withdrawals. (A financial advisor can help guide you through the Roth conversion process and potentially avoid unwanted tax consequences.)

On August 5, Southwest Gas Holdings (NYSE:SWX) reported second quarter results for the period ended June 30 and reaffirmed its full year 2026 guidance. Net income attributable to the company reached $42.1 million, a sharp turnaround from a $40.2 million loss in the same quarter of 2025. But the number that stood out was the Great Basin 2028 Expansion Project, where contracted demand has grown enough that management now expects capital costs of $2.3 billion instead of the $1.7 billion baked into current five year guidance.
Southwest Gas's growth story increasingly runs through Nevada. Binding precedent agreements for the Great Basin 2028 Expansion Project have grown to roughly 1 billion cubic feet per day of contracted demand, and the company has fielded another 1.8 billion cubic feet of expressions of interest for phases running from 2029 through 2035. Based on that demand, management now projects an annual margin of $270 million to $300 million once the pipeline is in service, on capital investment of about $2.3 billion.
Regulators have been cooperating too. California's Public Utilities Commission approved the non-cost-of-capital pieces of Southwest Gas's rate case, adding roughly $40 million of incremental annual revenue and triggering recognition of $9.7 million of previously deferred first-quarter income. Nevada regulators approved a Triennial Resource Plan with prudency pre-determinations for about $186 million of capital spending, and the company filed for a general rate case increase of roughly $74 million.
Arizona's new System Integrity Mechanism, effective April 1 this year, lets Southwest Gas recover safety and reliability spending faster, up to a $50 million annual cap. The company put $520 million into its network in the first six months of 2026, including $115 million toward Great Basin, and closed the quarter with $270.5 million in cash and nearly $1 billion in available liquidity.
Look past the headline swing to profit, and the picture gets murkier. The core natural gas distribution segment actually earned less this quarter, with its contribution to net income falling from $45.6 million a year earlier to $40.8 million, and its adjusted net income slipping from $33.7 million to $31 million. Depreciation and amortization rose $8.7 million, or 13%, as gas plant in service grew 7% year over year, a reminder that heavy pipeline spending shows up in expenses well before it shows up in rates.

Palantir Technologies' stock jumped approximately 8% on Thursday, recovering from the previous session's nearly 6% decline and trading near $183.
The rebound came even as prominent short-seller Michael Burry, known for his role in "The Big Short," renewed his long-standing bearish critique of the company.
In a detailed post on X early Thursday, Burry reiterated that Palantir is back in the stratosphere and that the facts have not changed. He described the firm as a consultant riding a bubble of AI FOMO demand and warned that its market cap could eventually fall well below $100 billion.
Burry focused on accounts receivable trends, noting that receivables had grown faster than revenue in 9 of the last 12 quarters, with one customer accounting for about 25% of receivables while contributing less than 10% of revenue.
He also highlighted rising days sales outstanding, deferred revenue patterns resembling those of consulting firms like Accenture rather than pure SaaS peers, elevated stock-based compensation, and large net operating losses. Burry disclosed that he remains short the stock and holds put options.

Series EE and I bonds stop earning interest at exactly year 30, with Treasury reporting billions in matured, unredeemed bonds still circulating.
Under IRC Section 454, deferred bond interest becomes taxable the year a bond matures, not when redeemed, triggering surprise tax bills for unknowing heirs.
A matured bond earns nothing while the 10-year Treasury yields 4.79%, meaning every month of delay actively erodes purchasing power.

If you inherited a shoebox of paper savings bonds from a parent or grandparent, some of them may have quietly stopped paying you years ago. U.S. savings bonds do not earn interest forever. They hit a hard stop called final maturity, and for the Series EE, Series I, and Series HH bonds most families still hold, that stop lands at exactly 30 years from the issue date printed on the face. Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service continues to report billions of dollars in matured, unredeemed savings bonds sitting in circulation. Once a bond reaches year 30, it stops accruing interest and can generate a tax bill you never saw coming.

The SECURE Act forces most non-spouse inherited IRA beneficiaries to fully empty the account within 10 years, with no life-expectancy stretch available.
Waiting until year 10 to withdraw a full inherited IRA balance stacks ordinary income on top of salary, pushing marginal rates to 32%.
Spreading withdrawals across all 10 years to fill the 22% and 24% brackets avoids the single-year income spike that triggers higher rates.

An inherited IRA is a retirement account passed to a beneficiary after the original owner dies. When the beneficiary is an adult child, the rules governing how quickly the money must be withdrawn have changed significantly under the SECURE Act. The scenario in the headline- a son who inherited a $220,000 IRA at age 60, deferred withdrawals, and then faced a forced distribution in year 10 that landed him in the 32% federal bracket- sits on a specific IRS rule that many beneficiaries misread.

LONDON (AP) — United States striker Folarin Balogun is set to head to Premier League team Everton on a transfer from Monaco, British media reported on Monday.
The transfer fee offered by Everton is reported to be in the range of 40 million pounds ($54 million) on a four-year deal, the British Press ******* ociation said. It said personal terms had yet to be worked out before the deal could be completed prior to Tuesday's transfer deadline.
The 25-year-old Balogun, who had two years remaining on a contract at Monaco, gained attention this summer scoring three goals for the United States as it reached the knockout stage of the World Cup. He was the top scorer for the U.S. team.
He also made headlines after drawing a red card and a one-game suspension in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a round-of-32 match.
The one-game suspension was deferred by FIFA after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened, allowing Balogun to play in the round of 16. Balogun eventually played in the 4-1 loss to Belgium that ended the U.S. team's home World Cup run.

OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS) ended fiscal 2026 with record operating cash flow and backlog, but its fourth-quarter revenue result was materially below expectations. Revenue declined 4% to $484.1 million, approximately $45.6 million below the $529.7 million consensus estimate. Full-year revenue of $1.786 billion also finished about $39 million below the $1.825 billion floor of the company's prior guidance. Company-defined non-GAAP diluted EPS of $3.78 was essentially in line with the $3.77 consensus estimate.
Shares closed lower following the revenue miss, Middle Eastern delivery delays, and fiscal 2027 guidance. The central question is whether the delayed sales represent a temporary shift or evidence that the record backlog will convert unevenly.
Fiscal 2026 GAAP diluted EPS increased 3% to $8.95, while company-defined non-GAAP diluted EPS rose 11% to $10.35. The non-GAAP measure excludes impairment, restructuring, and other charges, acquired-intangible amortization, a $4.359 million former-CEO retirement expense, related tax effects, and discrete tax items.
Management said Middle Eastern conflicts and site-access constraints shifted approximately $50 million of planned Security deliveries beyond June 30. OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS) said the orders were deferred rather than lost and remain in backlog under revised delivery schedules.
Backlog increased to approximately $1.9 billion from $1.8 billion a year earlier. Fiscal 2027 guidance calls for revenue of $1.875 billion to $1.930 billion, representing growth of 5% to 8.1%. Company-defined non-GAAP diluted EPS is expected between $11.13 and $11.49, implying growth of 7.5% to 11%.

Transferring some of your retirement savings from a tax-deferred account like a 401(k) to a Roth IRA can help you reduce or possibly avoid required minimum distributions (RMDs) and income taxes later on. It can also be beneficial if you want to leave tax-free savings to your heirs. A Roth conversion can therefore provide you with some flexibility when tax planning your finances in retirement.
However, you can't escape paying income taxes on your tax-deferred savings entirely, and converting 25% of a large 401(k) could lead to a sizable tax bill you'll have to pay right now. You may want to consider a conversion strategy based on keeping you from entering a higher marginal income tax bracket rather than converting a set percentage, although other timing factors may come into play.
Here are some factors to think about. You can also get matched with a financial advisor for free if you need help developing a 401(k) conversion plan that will balance present and future tax consequences.
Because Roth accounts are not subject to the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules that apply to 401(k) accounts, a retirement saver may want to consider converting funds from a 401(k) to a Roth IRA. Under RMD rules, funds left in a 401(k) or similar tax-deferred account have to be withdrawn on a strict schedule starting at age 73 or 75, depending on your birth year.

On August 13, Brookfield (NYSE:BN) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the story management told was less about property spreadsheets and more about power lines and reactors. Distributable earnings before realizations climbed 15% year over year to $1.4 billion for the quarter, and executives spent much of the call explaining how a $100 billion Kentucky data center project and a nuclear buildout fit into that growth.
Brookfield's pitch centers on a gap between AI's appetite for electricity and the grid's ability to supply it. CEO Bruce Flatt described a $100 billion partnership with the US Department of Energy to build an AI campus in Kentucky on federally owned land, a deal he said requires few approvals because of that federal ownership. Alongside that, the Department of Energy committed a further $17.5 billion to Brookfield and its utility partners to acquire long lead time items for Westinghouse's reactor pipeline, which the company says is now under construction on 14 reactors with visibility into 40 more and another 100 beyond that.
The ****** et management engine backing these bets had its own strong quarter. Fundraising hit a record $77 billion, pushing fee-bearing capital up 19% to $672 billion and fee-related earnings up 20% from a year earlier. The Oaktree acquisition closed in July, and Wealth Solutions distributable earnings rose 23% year over year to $480 million as the newly acquired Just Group added $45 billion of insurance ****** ets. Real estate leasing added another data point: office tenants signed 4.5 million square feet globally at net rents 19% above what was expiring, including leases in Canada priced more than double prior rates.
Flatt opened his remarks by naming the risks directly, pointing to geopolitical conflict, higher energy prices and uncertainty around interest rates as factors shaping the near-term market environment. That acknowledgment sits alongside a Just Group integration that is still a work in progress. Management said it exited an early-stage direct-to-consumer initiative and is still working through reducing the business's cost base, and Just contributed just $29 million of earnings in its first quarter under Brookfield ownership, a starting return on equity of about 12%.
Capital return also raises questions for income-focused shareholders. The board declared a quarterly dividend of only $0.07 per share, while the company spent roughly $580 million on buybacks year to date at an average price of $42, showing where management prefers to direct spare cash. Separately, the approved simplification of Brookfield's capital structure requires taxable Canadian and UK shareholders to actively file an election if they want a tax-deferred share exchange, an administrative step that falls on investors rather than the company. Management also acknowledged the annuity business operates in a competitive market, even as it held spreads above 200 basis points.

Brown Brothers Harriman, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for the "BBH Select Mid Cap ETF". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter, the fund increased 9.7% on a total return basis compared to the Russell Midcap Index's 13.8% return. Artificial intelligence is a key factor influencing market performance, with high-valuation and high-beta companies consistently outperforming others. The portfolio saw gains from being overweight in technology and industrials but missed opportunities due to underweighting more cyclical stocks. At the end of Q2 2026, the Fund held positions in 27 companies, with 48% of ******* ets concentrated in the top 10 holdings. The Fund's strategy focuses on companies priced below intrinsic value to ensure a margin of safety, rather than on whether valuations are high or low. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, BBH Select Mid Cap ETF highlighted Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET) as one of its leading performance contributors. Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET) is a high-speed switching and cloud networking solutions provider for hyperscale users. On August 19, 2026, Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET) closed at $186.45 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $235.15 billion. Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET) posted a one‑month return of 5.94%, while its shares gained 41.71% over the past 52 weeks.
BBH Select Mid Cap ETF stated the following regarding Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"For the quarter, the Fund's largest positive contributors were Entegris Inc. (Entegris) and Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE:ANET), both clear beneficiaries of the AI infrastructure buildout. Arista returned 38.4% during the quarter, ending with a weight of 5.1%. Arista is the leading provider of data center switches to cloud network customers. Arista reported strong first quarter results with record revenue and free cash flow ahead of expectations, but guidance fell short of high expectations due to increasing supply chain short ages. In addition, extended customer acceptance cycles on new AI products have pushed a growing volume of contracted demand into deferred revenue ahead of recognition, temporarily understating reported revenue growth and creating some investor confusion. However, management subsequently clarified this dynamic, clearly delin eating 54% growth inclusive of deferred product revenue. Management also expressed confidence in the outlook for 2026 along with a constructive demand backdrop for 2027. Finally, rising component costs are an industry-wide challenge, but Arista's multiyear supply commitments and execution track record leave us confident in their ability to execute throughout the next several years. Gross margin guidance of 62% to 64% was maintained despite the rising input cost pressures. Management also continues to expect one or pos

On August 7, **** ured Guaranty (NYSE:AGO) closed out a first half that pushed several core valuation metrics to record territory. Shareholders' equity, adjusted operating shareholders' equity, and adjusted book value per share all hit new highs at quarter-end, while new business production climbed to $152 million in present value of new business production/PVP for the first six months of 2026, up from $103 million a year earlier. That growth came even as the company kept underwriting through credit exposures that haven't gone away.
US public finance alone generated $106 million of PVP in the first half of 2026, more than the entire company produced in the first half of 2025, while insuring $9.6 billion of new issue par across 423 transactions. Global structured finance PVP more than doubled to $35 million from $15 million a year earlier, helped by fund finance deals that typically mature in a few months to a little over two years, letting the company recycle capital faster than in its longer-duration public finance book. The newer annuity reinsurance platform, **** ured Life Re, launched in January, and management says it remains on track to hit its production and income milestones.
Overseas, the company added deals in the UK, Spain, and France, part of a stated push into Europe and Asia Pacific. Second quarter adjusted operating income rose 22% year-over-year to $55 million, or $1.23 per share, helped by loss expense falling to $4 million from $28 million a year earlier. The company also kept returning cash, repurchasing 554,000 shares for $45 million in the quarter and paying $17 million in dividends, with the quarterly dividend per share now at $0.38.
Not everything moved in a straight line. The Brightline transaction was the biggest driver of economic loss development in the quarter, and management said the toll operator continues to face liquidity pressure even as its revenue grows; the exposure hasn't hurt adjusted operating income yet because expected losses haven't exceeded the deferred premium revenue on the policy, but the company said it is still working with Brightline and its other creditors on a resolution.
Thames Water remained a live issue too, though management reported no material change to its loss expectations in the second quarter, and the company is waiting on a new administration to help implement a solution creditors already negotiated with the UK regulator. The alternative investment book, which has delivered a roughly 12% inception-to-date internal rate of return against a 4.3% three-year average yield on the fixed maturity portfolio, took a step back after a $19 million mark-to-market loss tied to a CLO equity fund investment that reports on a one-quarter lag, a reminder of how much a single position can sway quarterly results.

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson signed an amended contract that extends his deal through 2031.
According to documents obtained by The Herald-Times, part of the USA TODAY Network, the amendment was finalized on Nov. 25, 2025, five days before the school announced a long-term extension for football coach Curt Cignetti.
Dolson, a former student manager for Bob Knight who helped transform his alma mater's fortunes on the gridiron, will make a base salary of $1.15 million a year, up $200,000 from his previous extension. He signed an additional contract amendment in June 2026 that impacted his deferred-compensation plan.
The university will now contribute $500,000 each July — up from $125,000 — through the length of the extended deal. Dolson will become fully vested in the deferred compensation account if he remains as the school's athletic director through December 2031 or is fired without cause before that date.
