Daniel Fernando García Velázquez took the admissions exam for Mexico's most famous university four times before finally getting the result that should have guaranteed him admission.
On his first three attempts, he had no option other than to travel the 400 km (250 miles) from his native Veracruz to Mexico City to take the test, because the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) insisted it had to be taken in person.
On his fourth – and what should have been victorious – attempt this June, he traveled up anyway, even though this time, for the first time in the university's history, it would be administered online.
This time, Velázquez aced the exam – scoring 94 out of 120 in what should have secured him a spot on the Communication and Journalism degree program offered at UNAM's Aragón School of Higher Studies.

Former Sky Sports Formula 1 presenter Rachel Brookes has predicted a massive overhaul of the F1 grid, tipping four-time champion Max Verstappen to join Mercedes and McLaren's Oscar Piastri to replace him at Red Bull.
F1 is now in its summer break, and with that comes a lot of talk about potential driver movements for the upcoming season. While there have been no official announcements of team changes for any driver, speculation about who could go where is ramping up.
Speaking on the Essential F1 podcast, Brookes suggested several driver changes, including an all-British line-up at McLaren and moves to Audi, Alpine and Williams for Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Franco Colapinto.
"I still think Max is looking for an exit because he's showing us all what he can do right now and we're all impressed and we're like, 'Max is amazing', because he is," she began.
"But he wants to be winning again. He doesn't want to have to show that he can get a car that should be 10th up to second. He wants to be winning races again.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth singled in Xander Bogaerts with two outs in the ninth inning and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Saturday night for their seventh win in eight games.
The Padres remained a game back of the third NL wild-card spot.
The Padres had to rally after Osleivis Basabe, a late replacement for MLB batting leader Luis Arraez, hit a two-run double off All-Star Mason Miller with two outs in the eighth to tie it at 5.
Xander Bogaerts hit a leadoff double off Dylan Smith (0-3) and was sacrificed by Freddy Fermin. With two outs, Fernando Tatis Jr. was intentionally walked before Cronenworth singled to center.

The Raiders haven't gotten a lot of immediate contributions from their rookies classes that past couple years. That must change this year as they look to get off to a fast start in their rebuild. In the spirit of that, let's look at what we've seen from their rookie class through the first three days of training camp.
Day one of camp, Mendoza took the field as the newly minted backup to Kirk Cousins. This after Mendoza had been the number three QB throughout offseason workouts. He looks smooth playing under center and throws a very good ball. Each day he seems to be asked to make tougher throws and he has kept pace well. As of yet, he has not thrown an interception. Mendoza has said he has a long way to go to fully absorbing the playbook and having full command of the offense, but is feeling fairly comfortable already.
He was drafted to challenge for either a safety job or nickel cornerback spot. Perhaps a hybrid role like Jeremy Chinn played last season. As of yet, the first team safeties have consistently been Chinn and fellow incumbent starter Isaiah Pola-Mao with veteran addition Taron Johnson nailing down the nickel corner job. But lots of camp still to see if Stukes can earn more reps, perhaps with the first team.
He has been pretty routinely running with the third team and until pads go on, he won't have a shot to change that.
He was a college tackle who was projected as a center and drafted as a guard. The Raiders have been testing his versatility, playing him as the second team center behind Tyler Linderbaum and third team right guard behind Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers. Zuhn has had his struggles with giving up pressure inside and Friday he launched a snap way over Fernando Mendoza's head. Yeah, he's still working out the kinks.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --The San Diego Padres (56-54) got their offense going again on Friday night with a 7-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants (47-63).
Friday was an interesting day for Padres left fielder Jase Bowen, who said he dreamt he would hit a home run. He told his wife, "Wouldn't that be cool if it happened?"
He then headed to Petco Park for the second game of a four-game series against the Giants.
Before the game, Bowen decided to take the sliding glove out of his back pocket and instead placed a small Jesus Christ figurine, given to him by a fan in El Paso, in its place.
When he came to the plate in the fourth inning, Bowen crushed a slider to deep left field for his first career home run, extending the Padres' lead to 4-0. As he rounded third base, Fernando Tatis Jr., who was due up next, was already celebrating. When Bowen returned to the dugout, he was greeted with congratulations from his teammates.

Chivas at times dominated but were only able to get a 1-1 tie against Puebla. Chivas was the better side from the start but their scoring troubles continued as they were only able to get a single goal against a Puebla side that looked to defend and counter from the start, giving away most possession. Both teams are going to the Leagues Cup before returning to Liga MX. Puebla will travel to Pachuca in their return while Chivas plays against Santos in Torreon.
The 1st half started with Chivas coming out with their best 11 including Brian Gutierrez from the start. Armando Gonzalez got into the area but his right footed shot would go wide. Roberto Alvarado got off a great left footed shot that was blocked by Puebla's goalkeeper, Ricardo Gutierrez. He would leave the ball there for Gonzalez go get a close range header but Gutierrez made a fantastic save to stop him from a sure goal. Gonzalez got into the area and his left footed shot was blocked by Gutierrez but it bounced off Juan Pablo Vargas and looked like it was going to be an own goal but it hit the post. Chivas was completely dominating the match but the score remained scoreless. Against the run of play, Emiliano Gomez got into the area and get past a defender before getting off a left footed shot that Chivas' goalkeeper Raul Rangel blocked but left there for Eduardo Mustre to get off a left footed shot in the net to score and give Puebla the surprising 1-0 lead. It was the first real chance for the home side and it was a bad mistake from Rangel to give up the lead. From outside the area, Ruben Gonzalez got off a right footed shot that went wide. Facundo Almada made a run into the area but his right footed shot went wide. Daniel Aguirre made a good move in the area and got off a left footed shot that went just wide. A cross into the area was headed by Bryan Alonso Gonzalez but it was cleared by Puebla's defense. Alonso Gonzalez got off a left footed shot inside the area that Gutierrez saved. The halftime whistle blew and although Chivas had played better, it was Puebla who had the lead at the break.
The 2nd half started with neither team making a substitution as it started to rain heavily in Puebla. Kevin Velasco got off a left footed shot from outside the area that Rangel saved. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aaron Donald's potential return to the Los Angeles Rams will not be decided while they are in training camp, but coach Sean McVay said the defensive lineman's status is "going in the right direction."
"If there's an arrow, it's trending upwards," McVay said Friday following the Rams' first practice in full pads.
The Rams are currently working out at Loyola Marymount University through Aug. 6, but McVay indicated any decision on Donald possibly ending his retirement would not come until they return to their facility in the San Fernando Valley.
"That'll be something that, I think, once we get back to Woodland Hills, we'll have a better idea of what that timeline looks like. There won't be any decision and anything in terms of Aaron's situation while we're here. That's kind of already been set out when we've talked for the past couple weeks," McVay said.
A three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year and eight-time All-Pro, Donald retired in March 2024 as the Rams' career leader in sacks with 111 in 154 games. One of the most disruptive linemen in league history, he helped Los Angeles win a ****** le following the 2021 season. Donald made game-ending defensive plays in both the NFC championship game and the Super Bowl.

Devers did get a sacrifice fly, but Tatis added on to his impressive list of home run robberies.
Tatis tracked Devers' fly ball and leaped to get his glove high above the short wall in right-center at Petco Park to make the catch. He landed and tumbled onto his backside, but flipped the ball to center fielder Jackson Merrill, who tossed it into the infield.
Merrill helped Tatis to his feet and patted him on the chest. Pitcher JP Sears raised his left arm in celebration.
Tatis was an All-Star at shortstop in 2021 and was moved to right field in 2023, after missing the 2022 season with injuries and a PED suspension. He won the Gold Glove and Platinum Glove awards in 2023 and 2025.

The event takes place Aug. 29 at Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China, and is headlined by an important bantamweight bout between Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong. The UFC has now added a matchup between Jack Jenkins and Sean Woodson. The promotion officially announced the matchup Thursday.
Jenkins (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has produced mixed results in recent outings, but comes into this pairing after a unanimous decision win over Ramon Taveras in September. The Dana White's Contender Series veteran native has four wins under the UFC banner, including a third-round finish of Herbert Burns at UFC 305.
The Australian draws a rangy Woodson (13-2-1 MMA, 7-2-1 UFC) who will look to rebound from a streak-breaking stoppage loss against Dan Ige at UFC 314. With neither team scoring through nine innings on Thursday afternoon, the White Sox lineup had a little more juice in extra innings to outlast the Yankees in a 2-1 walk-off win. The decisive plate appearance was a bases-loaded free pass from Tristan Peters against a clearly gassed Fernando Cruz. In a game in which neither team hit well, it was fitting that the winning run would score without a bat being swung.
Wasted opportunities in the first are not something a team normally dwells on for too long, but in this matchup, both clubs had reasons to lament not opening the scoring right from the get-go. The Las Vegas Raiders did much to improve their roster this offseason. While the Raiders are still a developing team, they addressed areas of need well in preparation for next season.
Sports Illustrated's Eva Geitheim labeled the Raiders as the most improved team of the offseason due to the range of improvements that the team made dating back to last winter.
"The Raiders entered the offseason with more cap ***** e than any other team, and proceeded to use that money wisely by retooling their roster with the additions of Tyler Linderbaum, Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, Kwity Paye and Jalen Nailor in free agency. Not only did the Raiders turn to the open market to bolster the roster, they changed the coaching staff—highlighted by the addition of Klint Kubiak, fresh off a Super Bowl win as the Seahawks' offensive coordinator—and used the No. 1 pick on Heisman Trophy–winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza."

Quarterback play is always paramount in modern college football, as opposed to past decades when the running game mattered most in the sport. This is true in the Big Ten. Fernando Mendoza, the starting quarterback for the **** le-winning Indiana Hoosiers last season, was picked No. 1 in this past NFL draft. This upcoming season, the best quarterbacks in college football reside in the Big Ten. Whoever comes out on top in the Big Ten will have a quarterback who proved to be the best in college football.
Here is my ranking of the top five quarterbacks in the Big Ten:
Dante Moore shone last season, and just like last year, he was in conversations for being the best quarterback in college football. Moore threw for 2733 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He is dangerous in the pocket and an underrated athlete. Last year, he made the most of having great weapons and a great run game, helping lead Oregon's prolific offense to a college football playoff berth. This season, he enters with more continuity and a deeper set of weapons at each of the skill positions. I expect Moore to have a big season and end the year off being the undisputed #1 overall pick just like Fernando Mendoza.
Sayin's season last year was incredible, and he was extremely efficient. He had all the resources to be in that position with weapons, Jeremiah Smith, and Carnell Tate, but he still maximized his opportunity as a freshman starter. He ended the year with 3323 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. The connection he has with Jeremiah Smith is already a proven one, and he showed he can run the offense even better than Will Howard did the year prior. However, as expected from most freshmen, under the bright lights, he did fall short in the College Football Playoff vs the Miami Hurricanes and in the Big Ten championship vs the Indiana Hoosiers. Although his season was special, he still has more room to grow. If he takes that next step, the Ohio State Buckeyes will have another national **** le trophy in their case.
Jayden Maiava still does not get the credit he deserves for how good he truly was last season. In his first season as a starting quarterback, he led the Trojans' offense to being a top unit in the country. Lincoln Riley's offense was dangerous and high scoring because of how good and confident Maiava was last season. Maiava threw for 3431 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Maiava is a gun slinger, and he takes a lot of shots, but playing more under control would do wonders for his perception and draft stock. If he can have a similar season, with fewer interceptions and showcase his running ability more, there is reason to believe he can be one of the first quarterbacks taken in this next draft. The success of the Trojans this year falls on Maiava's back, but I am confident he will take a step forward and not back in year 2.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. went 5 for 5 with two RBIs in the first five-hit game of his career, and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the San Diego Padres an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Encinitas-born Mickey Moniak hit a two-run home run, the eighth of his career against San Diego, part of his three-RBI night for the Rockies (42-56), who saw four costly errors all come back to hurt.
Jackson Merrill led off the ninth with a single, his third of the game, then stole second and advanced to third when Hunter Goodman's throw went into center field. Back-to-back walks to Luis Rengifo and pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song cued up Bogaerts' decisive RBI, which made for the seventh walk-off win of the season by San Diego and their third time against Colorado.

An early look at the Madden 27 ratings is here, and there are some surprises for fans.
One of those comes when taking a look at the highest-rated rookies in the game. There are several recognizable names among that grouping, and unsurprisingly, every name on the list was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. However, there is one prominent player selected in the first round this year that was shockingly omitted from the top 10 rated rookies.
Despite capturing the Heisman Trophy last year and being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 1 overall draft pick, Fernando Mendoza was not among the top 10 rated rookies in the new game. The cut-off to make that list was a 78 overall rating, while Mendoza only sits at a 74 overall – missing the top 10 by just a few points.
But reports indicate that the franchise plans to run with Kirk Cousins as the starter this year, so his rating should reflect that he may not make as big an impact in his rookie season. And no one is going to care about his Madden rating in July if he does make the field and plays well this season. It is just a game, after all.

Fernando Mendoza was the No. 1 pick in April's NFL Draft. But he'll have to earn a starting job with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed to reporters Tuesday that veteran Kirk Cousins will start training camp as the Raiders' starting quarterback. Kubiak made his comments at a news conference a day before the start of training camp.
"When we go out to practice tomorrow, Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback. He's the guy," Kubiak said. "He's gonna get a ton of reps. He deserves it. He's played really good football.
"I want Fernando and I want Aidan [O'Connell] to push him."
Kubiak added that "it's important for me to be fair to the players and put the best player out there."

Call it a B-spec, call it a heavily revised AMR26, call it whatever you want – what Aston Martin rolled out at the Hungaroring for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix is, by any reasonable engineering standard, a new Formula 1 car. Sixteen separate components were declared upgraded, mechanics broke FIA curfew to get both cars fitted in time, and the team reportedly flew spare parts to Budapest just to guarantee Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll could each run the full package. That is not a development update. That is a rebuild.
The backstory is by now well-documented and not particularly flattering. Adrian Newey didn't get serious work underway on the AMR26 until mid-March 2025, and the wind tunnel didn't see a model until mid-April – three months behind rivals who were already deep into the new regulatory cycle. The car that arrived at pre-season testing in Barcelona was overweight, paddock insiders estimated by somewhere between 10 and 15 kilograms, maybe more, and the Honda power unit was generating vibrations severe enough to rattle onboard cameras loose and leave Alonso and Stroll visibly fighting the steering wheel.
At the Australian opener, Alonso qualified 2.462 seconds off the pace. Both cars retired when the vibrations damaged the battery systems. It went largely sideways from there – one point across the opening ten rounds, tenth of eleven teams in the constructors' standings, behind only the expansion Cadillac outfit.
The nose is the clearest sign of how deep the changes go. Where the original AMR26 carried a wide, blunt front structure, the Hungary version features a noticeably thinner, more tapered profile – the kind of slender nose Newey has favoured since his early Red Bull years. That change alone cascades through the entire front end: new uprights, revised aerodynamic ducting, changed actuator mounting, and a completely reworked front wing with reshaped endplates. Per Newey, the forward section of the chassis was lightened to the point that it required a full re-homologation and fresh crash testing – which, depending on your definition, crosses the threshold from upgrade to new car.
Newey himself occupies both sides of that argument simultaneously. "The main structural elements remain the same – the chassis and gearbox architecture don't fundamentally change – but we've taken weight out of both, which required re-homologating and crash testing the forward chassis," he said. So: same architecture, new crash test. Make of that what you will.

The Miami Marlins (52-51) welcome the San Diego Padres (50-53) to South Beach this weekend. It is a crucial three-game set for both teams' playoff hopes. Each club has struggled following the All-Star break. The loser of this series will kiss their postseason chances goodbye.
The Padres fell short for a second consecutive day, as a late-game rally ended in a frustrating 6-5 defeat to the Atlanta Braves. The loss dropped them to 2-5 on their 10-game, three-city road trip.
The Friars began the scoring with a three-run rally off of Braves ace Chris Sale. A fielding error by left fielder Mauricio Dubón aided the offense, as it was followed by a bases-loaded walk to Fernando Tatis Jr. and a two-run single by Luis Renglio. But that lead was short-lived.

During my tenure at Pinstripe Alley—hell, during my entire time as a baseball fan—I've never been shy about delving into the team's history and exploring the lives of its long roll call of players, both incredible and regrettable. We provide plenty of other coverage on the current-day activities of the teams, so I like having one spot per day on the schedule to open the ol' books and tell a story.
Whether it's remembering championship teams, Top 100 players, or notable free agent signings, there's always something out there to explore. For the past three years, we've celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1998-2000 Yankees dynasty by doing a diary on all their regular season and playoff activity. The final pages were written this past October, so it's time for a new daily project.
With that in mind, we'll ring in the new year by beginning the Yankees Birthdays series. Every day in 2026, we'll have a new Yankees figure to discuss whose birthday happened to fall on that day. Some days will feature far more famous stars than others! But that just adds to the challenge and our interest in the exercise. As a spoiler for today, that's exactly what you'll see soon for January 1st.

Thirty-one of the 32 first-round picks in the 2026 NFL draft have signed their contracts. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the first overall selection, signed his deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday.
That leaves Alabama QB Ty Simpson, the 13th overall pick by the LA Rams, as the lone player chosen in the first round unsigned. Apparently, "secondary contract language" is the holdup. One would have thought Simpson would be anxious to to sign, given how questioned the Rams' choice of him was.
That said, everyone else is in the fold. A look at the value of the contracts for each of those picks. The deals are all for four years.

HENDERSON, Nev. — There'll be no holdouts among the rookies at the Las Vegas Raiders' training camp. Which means fewer distractions for first-year head coach Klint Kubiak.
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza put his signature to a four-year deal worth a reported $57.27 million and is fully guaranteed. He reported to the Intermountain Health Performance Center Thursday with the rest of the 10 rookies, all of who are signed.
Mendoza is receiving a signing bonus of $38.1 million so he can now concentrate on football, which has been his mantra since the Raiders took him No. 1 overall in late April.
"I'm so excited to be part of the family. Can't wait to get to work," Mendoza, who led Indiana to the national championship earlier this year, said on the Raiders' X account Thursday. "Appreciate your guys' all support. Let's get this thing rolling!"
And while Kirk Cousins is the favorite to be the Raiders' starter on Sept. 13 vs. Miami at Allegiant Stadium, it was important for Mendoza to not miss any time. He may be highly intelligent, but it's a big learning curve from college football to the NFL, something he has acknowledged on more than one occasion.
There is a team option fifth year in the contract so No. 15 is going to be around Las Vegas for a while. The plan is not to rush his development, let him learn and progress at a pace both he and the coaching staff are comfortable with and be ready to stay the starter once they make him the No. 1 QB.
The veterans report next Tuesday and the first day of overall camp is Wednesday. But there were images on the Raiders' social media of some of the veterans showing up at the team's facility in Henderson, including Maxx Crosby and Jackson Powers-Johnson.
For the next few days, it'll be Mendoza and his fellow rookies who will be the center of attention as they acclimate themselves to NFL life and Kubiak and his staff get a feel for what they have to work with.

It's a little early to start reimagining this year's NFL draft, as the class has yet to even complete its first training camp, let alone play in an NFL game.
But that is where we are, days away from camp. Justin Melo of Sports Illustrated recently conducted the exercise of redrafting the 2026 college class knowing what we know now about these players.
The first two picks remained unchanged. The Las Vegas Raiders selected Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1, and the New York Jets took Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey second overall.
At No. 3, the Arizona Cardinals selected Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese instead of Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Next up, at No. 4, the Tennessee **** ans stay the course with Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate.
The New York Giants, at No. 5, and with Reese, their actual pick this year, select his Buckeyes teammate, linebacker Sonny Styles.

Chris Sale tied a season-high with 11 strikeouts and earned his 11th win of the season in the Atlanta Braves' 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

Gavin Sheets and Freddy Fermin led off the frame with consecutive singles. Fermin hit a weak pop-up to left field, but outfielder Mauricio Dubón lost the ball in the sun and allowed it to drop.
