Classification cutoffs for several sports were updated by the Illinois High School ***** ociation board of directors at its meeting this month. Changes take effect for the 2027-28 school year.
The IHSA's newly revised policy gives schools plenty of notice after moving to annual classification cycles and fixed enrollment cutoffs that began in 2025-26.
"When revamping the Classification Policy in 2024, one of our goals was to provide member schools with one year notice in advance of any class cutoff changes to help them prepare accordingly," IHSA executive director Craig Anderson said in a release. "All the changes approved today will go into effect during the 2027-28 school year."
The board also changed its policy to be set at the nearest 25 students as opposed to only the nearest 50 or 100 due to declining enrollment membership.
"The overall enrollment within our membership is currently declining," Anderson said in a release, "so it makes sense to lower some of these cutoffs to keep in line with that trend. The data shows us that the majority of schools who are moving up in classification were competing in that same class just a year or two ago."

Jose Mourinho is beginning to form a clearer picture of his preferred Real Madrid defence, with the Portuguese coach reportedly identifying the back four that currently gives him the greatest sense of security.
According to Defensa Central, Mourinho's conclusions have evolved as the weeks and early matches of the season have progressed.
While the Real Madrid manager remains aware that his team has defensive issues to address, he is already looking towards the combination he could trust for the biggest matches ahead.
As things stand, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella are believed to be the four defenders leading the race for those positions.
Dumfries has made the strongest case at right-back, with the Dutchman beginning to pull ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the battle for a starting role.

Purdue volleyball serves up a new challenge this season – no longer sneaking up on teams but proving it can meet top 10 expectations in a more competitive ***** e.
Coach Dave Shondell, who is 68 and signed a four-year contract extension in the offseason, said the Big Ten is much better this season and pointed to three of the ninth-ranked Boilermakers' first four matches are against top-20 teams. He also will be challenged with blending young talent to a returning core and redefining leadership, pointing to 10 of his 17 players having not played for Purdue in a regular-season match.
It also will be part of the first-of-its-kind college volleyball event in the Bahamas, where it will face either No. 11 SMU or No. 3 Kentucky, take part in the Big Ten/SEC challenge and a Big Ten Tournament hosted in Fishers. Purdue returns its core leadership with outside hitter Kenna Wollard, opposite Grace Heaney, setter Taylor Anderson and libero Ryan McAleer.
"I think that my approach has been a little bit different in that I'm expecting a little bit more from our team every day in practice than I did a year ago, which is kind of a dangerous move because last year whatever we did seemed to work," Shondell told IndyStar.
Ahead of first serve against No. 13 Creighton at 7 p.m. Friday on a neutral floor at the Sanford Pentagon, here are four things to watch with Purdue volleyball in 2026.

In case you haven't heard, the Washington Commanders had a tough day in Wednesday's joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens. With several starters sidelined, including three of the original five projected starting offensive linemen, almost everything was a struggle.
But not everything was bad.
Rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams had himself a day. In one rep, Williams beat Ravens All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton for a catch. On another rep, Williams beat one of the AFC's top young cornerbacks, Nate Wiggins.

Ander Herrera's most recent competitive game was in front of a raucous La Bombonera crowd playing for Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores.
His next will be in the Spanish third division in front of roughly 6,500 fans against a regional side, Gimnastic de Tarragona.
But Herrera says his return to Real Zaragoza on a free transfer from Boca is just as important as any move he has made in his career.
"This is probably the last dream that I wanted to make come true," the Spaniard tells BBC Sport.
"To come back home, to the place where I grew up, that gave me the opportunity to be professional - not only in football, also as a human being.

Liverpool have got a potential shortage of options in the No9 position this season.
Alexander Isak - a £125m signing from Newcastle in summer 2025 - is expected to lead the line and improve on the four goals he scored during his maiden campaign.
He has no senior backup with Hugo Ekitike, 23, injured until late December or January. And with money set to be spent on wingers it doesn't appear as though Richard Hughes is going to rectify the situation through the transfer market either.
It means potential opportunities for players in Liverpool's youth and academy sides to prove themselves at the highest level.
Jayden Danns - recovering from a serious injury - may head out on loan however as he requires significant first-team minutes.

Craven Cottage stages a first-ever competitive meeting between Fulham and AFC Wimbledon on Thursday, with a place in the Carabao Cup third round at stake.
Fulham enter off the back of a narrow 2-3 defeat to Chelsea on the Premier League's opening weekend, Alvaro Arbeloa's first game in charge, while Wimbledon have gone six matches without a win across all competitions and are yet to score in League One this season.
Wimbledon reached this stage only after Callum Maycock's dramatic 97th-minute equaliser forced a penalty shootout against Newport County, which the Dons went on to win. Fulham, whose 146-year history has never produced a major trophy, reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals last season and will see this competition as a realistic route to silverware. Steven Sessegnon, who began his career at Fulham before moving on, could line up for Wimbledon against his former club.
Date: Thursday, 27 August 2026Kick-off: 20:00 BSTVenue: Craven Cottage
Captain Tom Cairney remains sidelined with a knee injury and is not expected back until later in the autumn. Joachim Andersen is available again having served the final match of a three-game suspension against Chelsea, though Arbeloa may still use the tie to rest him. Several substitutes from the Chelsea game, including Ryan Sessegnon, Rodrigo Muniz, Harrison Reed and Shea Charles, are pushing for starts.

German national team coach Jürgen Klopp has already spoken with several Bundesliga coaches, including Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany:
During his first few weeks in charge, Jürgen Klopp held long conversations with Bundesliga coaches, including Vincent Kompany, Niko Kovač and Sebastian Hoeneß. Klopp wants to work with them closely and stay in regular contact. He has also spoken to the coaches of Germany's youth teams and made it clear to them that they're part of the process and are very important to him. Klopp attaches a lot of importance to attending games regularly in stadiums. After last week's Super Cup, he will also attend Friday's Bundesliga opener at Allianz Arena.
Klopp is trying as best he can to get a read on his talent pool and taking in feedback from some of the most important managers in Germany's top tier. Sure, you can say that is what he is supposed to do, but it is reassuring that he — so far — is able to juggle managing the here and now, while also working to establish new initiatives for the future.
Juventus is still trying to sort out its desire to bring in a new attacker:
Juventus are unimpressed with Randal Kolo Muani's performances since his return to the club and are now looking at Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth, Gazzetta dello Sport reports. The Norway international is being favoured over Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee because it is felt that his characteristics would be a better fit. Nicolas González could be used as part of a deal to bring the costs down, especially as the 28-year-old wants to continue with Atleti following the expiration of his loan.

NEW YORK (AP) — Brice Turang hit a three-run homer and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 8-1 on Wednesday night, overcoming an injury to starter Dustin May after one pitch.
May left in the first inning with a bruised right scapula when a 106 mph line drive off the bat of leadoff hitter A.J. Ewing ricocheted off his right shoulder blade. The right-hander was replaced by lefty Robert Gasser (4-5), who earned the win by tossing 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball.
May became the first major league starter to exit after one pitch since Pablo López with the Miami Marlins on July 2, 2021.
David Hamilton, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell and Christian Yelich had RBI singles for the major league-leading Brewers (82-50), who clinched their sixth straight winning season and ninth in the last 10 years. Milwaukee finished over .500 just 15 times in the franchise's first 48 seasons.
The homer for Turang was his first since July 31. He is hitting just .188 with 10 RBIs this month.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost the second game of their three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, 6-5, in walk-off fashion.
Roki Sasaki started the game for the Dodgers, but had to leave early due to a blister on his right middle finger. The right-hander lasted 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, two walks and four earned runs—two of which came across after he exited the game.
The first of the four runs Sasaki allowed came in the bottom of the first inning, as Matt Olson took him deep with a solo homer to right.
The Dodgers didn't waste any time in getting back to level terms, though, as Hunter Feduccia recorded his second RBI single in as many nights in the top of the second after Tommy Edman led off with a double.
Edman came up to the plate in the following inning, and gave the Dodgers their first lead of the series with a two-run homer over the wall in right field.

The NFL has had more than 100 Pro Bowlers in recent years because of players who were either too injured or disinterested in participating. Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who started only seven games and threw more interceptions than touchdowns, was a Pro Bowl replacement last season.
The league announced Wednesday that it is doing away with the game. Instead, the NFL will name 88 Pro Bowlers it will honor in Los Angeles before the Super Bowl in February.
Commissioner Roger Goodell explained the reasoning after NFL owners wrapped up their meeting in Atlanta.
"I think this is something that we talked to our players about, the Pro Bowl players in particular," Goodell said, via Mark Maske of Front Office Sports. "We had conference calls the last couple years: What's working? What's not? What would you like to see? And the number one thing that came out—and there were a lot of wonderful comments by the players—one is: 'We want to be honored and celebrated as a Pro Bowl player.' . . . It just opened my eyes. I never really thought about it in the context of that. It's not honoring the replacement players. It's honoring the guys who are selected by the fans, by the players, by the coaches.
"And so that was really the core of it, is: How do we do this in the right way? And our players, you know, they did what they normally do. They had great recommendations on how to do that. And second, a willingness to lead that the all-star format doesn't really work for our game. . . . It's something that we felt strongly about. And I think our players, they deserve to be celebrated when they get the Pro Bowl honor."

Patrick Mahomes may be forced to limit his phone time due to bad service during training camp, but there's one person he always makes sure to text — his wife, Brittany Mahomes.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, 30, revealed his communication priorities during a press conference on Tuesday, August 25, while discussing Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz, whom Mahomes previously praised for helping him through his ACL recovery.
"St. Joe's dorm rooms, man, you don't get a lot of text messages," Mahomes joked, referring to the rooms at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo., where the Chiefs hold training camp. But Brittany, 30, is the exception.
"I just try to make sure I text Brittany," he added. "If I text Brittany, I'm usually in a good spot."

NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Dustin May left his start against the New York Mets after one pitch Wednesday night when he was hit in the upper back by A.J. Ewing's line drive.
Ewing's 106 mph liner ricocheted off May as he whirled in an attempt to get out of the way. The ball caromed on one hop right to third baseman David Hamilton, who threw out the speedy Mets rookie at first.
May grimaced as he bent forward, favoring the area around his right shoulder blade and armpit. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy and an athletic trainer went to the mound to check on May, who was surrounded by Brewers infielders.
After a long consultation, May threw a handful of warmup pitches, raising his arm and shaking his right hand between tosses. Murphy then motioned to the dugout and May followed him off the mound.
Left-hander Robert Gasser, who began warming up in the bullpen after May was struck, entered and retired Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette on four pitchers to end the first inning.

Apparently a Pro Bowl, well, event that included Joe Flacco and Shedeur Sanders was a bridge too far.
The NFL will officially eliminate the Pro Bowl as a competition and simply apply the honorific to deserving players, many of whom have contract escalators for being named a Pro Bowler. The league made the announcement Wednesday, Aug. 26. The move also aligns with the NFL's ongoing initiatives to emphasize player safety. Playing an all-star exhibition, in any form, didn't square nicely with that objective.
Moving forward, the AFC and NFC rosters will continue to be constructed with 44 players apiece. However with no need for last-minute replacements, there won't be a dilution to the honor that had become so commonplace in recent years. Players, coaches and fans will continue to annually supply equally weighted votes to determine the 88 Pro Bowlers.
"The Pro Bowl has always been about recognizing the players who distinguish themselves as the very best in the NFL," said Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's EVP of club business, international and league events.
"A Pro Bowl selection will return to its original purpose, honoring the best of the best. We want that distinction to carry even greater meaning for the players, their families, their clubs and our fans."

Following a disappointing loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday night, the Brewers will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, with right-hander Dustin May on the mound opposite Robert Stock for New York.
May has made three starts since joining the Brewers, with last Wednesday's outing against the Mariners representing his first real stumble. After allowing just three earned runs with 11 strikeouts over 13 innings in his first two starts, May was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one over just two innings in Milwaukee's 7-5 loss. For the season, he's 6-8 with a 4.57 ERA, 3.36 FIP, and 118 strikeouts across 124 innings.
Stock, 36, is a former second-round pick who spent time in the Brewers organization in 2023. He debuted with the Padres in 2018 and later had brief stints with the Red Sox, Cubs, and Mets through 2021 before pitching overseas. Stock returned to the majors with two appearances for Boston last season before rejoining the Mets this year. He has made four starts in 2026, posting a 5.40 ERA and 4.10 FIP with 19 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings. Those numbers are skewed by one particularly rough outing, when he surrendered eight of his 10 earned runs in a 9-0 loss to the Pirates in early August. The Mets have won in both of his last two starts, as he's totaled 8 2/3 innings with two runs allowed (one earned) and 11 strikeouts against the Nationals and Padres.
Sal Frelick makes his return to the lineup after being activated from his IL stint yesterday, as he'll start in left field and bat leadoff. Garrett Mitchell follows, with Brice Turang, Christian Yelich, and William Contreras in the 3-4-5 spots. Luis Lara moves up to bat sixth, with Andrew Vaughn, David Hamilton, and Cooper Pratt rounding things out, meaning Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio will start this one on the bench.
First pitch is at 6:10 p.m. on Brewers TV and the Brewers Radio Network.

The check-swing call that got San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello ejected on Wednesday afternoon was borderline, a maybe, maybe not.
Vitello's fiery response to getting tossed, though, was crisp and clear on the visiting TV audio. After yelling – at the very least – "Get it right!" before home-plate umpire Ryan Blakney sent him to an early shower, Vitello popped out of the dugout with some words that got the crowd-mic volume hastily turned down on NBC Sports Bay Area.
Pointing at first-base umpire Ben May, Vitello unleashed some swear words while continuing to interject "get it f---ing right" after May ruled that Eugenio Suárez hadn't swung at a 1-2 pitch from Logan Webb.
Vitello was known for his occasional displays of temper while at the University of Tennessee, but in his first three ejections this season, he was relatively restrained in his responses. Director of major league pitching Frank Anderson, Vitello's pitching coach at Tennessee, was more animated when he was ejected along with Adrian Houser on May 2.
On Wednesday, with his team going for its first sweep of the season, Vitello let loose and at the least, got his money's worth for the fine that comes along with getting ejected.

Jon Stewart recently compared the Obamas' time in the White House to President Donald Trump's.
"I imagine for you and your family that it's a surreal experience for you guys because of the effort that you put into building something up and to watch it be corrupted," Stewart, 63, remarked on the Wednesday, August 26 episode of Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson's IMO podcast. "To have this perversion of leadership, I imagine, is especially difficult to digest. There's a surreal quality to it."
Stewart then pointed out that the former first lady, 62, and her husband, former President Barack Obama, "left money on the table," joking that she could have had "a Michelle meme coin."

A former fan-favorite NFL event has been eliminated.
The Pro Bowl, formerly a tackle game, and more recently, a flag football and ***** orted competition event, will be discontinued, the NFL said in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon.
Instead of a flag football game, the NFL will try to elevate the status of what it means to be elected a Pro Bowler. There will be 88 players selected and no replacement selections with players, coaches and fans each continuing to account for one-third of the voting.
In recent years, it became increasingly common for the NFL's top names (Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, among other stars) to decline their Pro Bowl invitations, resulting in players such as Tyler Huntley and Shedeur Sanders earning invitations to participate in the annual football game, which made the event feel less meaningful. Instead, the NFL plans to make the honor something worth celebrating again.
"By limiting the honor to the 88 players originally selected, the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon will return its focus squarely to recognizing the league's most outstanding performers, reinforcing the significance of an achievement held in especially high regard by players themselves," the statement continued. "As part of that focus, the NFL will no longer stage an AFC vs. NFC Pro Bowl game. Instead, the league will place greater emphasis on the moment a player is selected, the recognition that accompanies that distinction and bringing the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon class together to celebrate the achievement."

Everton have been drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the Carabao Cup for the second consecutive year. This came after beating Preston North End in a 4-0 jaunt earlier tonight. Wolves beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to progress to the clash against the Blues.
Last season the Blues featured a weakened side against bottom dwellers Wolves who were yet to win a game at the time, but then slipped to a 2-0 defeat away from home to exit the tournament they are yet to win.
Carabao Cup Round Three fixtures will take place across two weeks (beginning 7th and 14th September), with fixtures in the Champions League (week beginning 7th September) and Europa League (week beginning 14th September) also scheduled during this period. The additional dates required in the calendar for European competitions are as a result of an increased number of games for the season, the same as last year.
The eight teams competing in European competitions this season will be drawn separately in a pre-draw to keep them apart from the rest of the third round teams tonight. Since UEFA competitions fixtures cannot be rescheduled, additional rules for the third round of the Carabao Cup had been introduced for the draw tonight. Clubs taking part in the Champions League or Europa League cannot be drawn against each other in the Carabao Cup third round.
The Blues have never won this competition in their 141-year history, but have been beaten finalists twice, against Aston Villa in 1977 and to Liverpool in 1984. Their run in the tournament last season lasted until the Third Round when they lost at home to Southampton in a penalty shootout, with newest signing Tyler Dibling a second half substitute in that game.

As Mark Vientos nears a return from his rehab **** ignment, the question of how the slugging right-hander fits into this version of the Mets was raised to interim manager Andy Green, and the skipper did not mince words.
"I don't know," Green said prior to Wednesday's game with the Brewers. "I was very forthright with him when he started the rehab **** ignment that a lot of that will be dictated by how others perform and also by how he performs. Still think there's a very bright future for him out there if he wants to grab a hold of it. That's on him."
The current construction of the Mets roster doesn't lend itself to a lot of at-bats for Vientos to start with. Even with the added roster spot on Sept. 1, the team has to use the DH spot to give time to other players, including Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Robert Jr., as well as the eventual return of Juan Soto, who could see time as DH.
Vientos, who was placed on the IL back on July 10 with a fractured hand, has played three minor league games between Double-A and Triple-A. In that span, he's 0-for-9 with a walk and five strikeouts.
With no remaining options, Vientos will rejoin the team, but as Green put it Wednesday, it'll be a proving ground for the young slugger.

The man who took the recruiting world by storm during his unbelievable run at the Peach Jam earlier this summer, Cayden Daughtry, has released a list of some of his final schools.
When I say a list of some, that's an understatement, with the list being Daughtry's top 14 schools.
Even though it's a list of 14 schools, it is still something to get excited about, considering a ton of programs were left off the list entirely.
The list includes Kentucky, along with Florida State, Iowa, Miami (Florida), UConn, Florida, Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee, USC, Louisville, Providence, Villanova, and Vanderbilt.
Mark Pope and the Kentucky staff will have their hands full with this recruitment, given who they're battling. The schools that have collected the last four national championships are on the list, as well as two of Kentucky's biggest rivals in Tennessee and Louisville.

Dolly Parton's death at 80 years old this week has sparked numerous tributes and sweet reflections on the Queen of Country Music's legacy. It's also shining a light on a symbol that played a significant role in Parton's life: the ******* erfly.
If you Google Parton's name on Wednesday, you'll see a flurry of ******* erflies across the screen, along with the words "We'll Always Love You." The 9 to 5 actor, who died after a "brief battle with cancer," has long incorporated ******* erflies into her work, making them a central theme of her 1974 track "Love is Like a ******* erfly" as well as using them in her clothing, stage shows and even in the logo for her Pigeon Forge, Tenn., amusement park, Dollywood, where the W is a pair of ******* erfly wings. She's also previously shared that she has pastel ******* erfly tattoos, which, like her other hidden tattoos, she got to cover scars.
In an interview with W Magazine in 2021, Parton explained why ******* erflies, which she "loved" all her life, were her favorite symbol.
"They didn't sting. They didn't bite, and they were so beautiful," she said. Parton explained that while growing up in Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains, she would get "lost in the woods," and "wander off" chasing after the insects from "one bush to another."
A gleaming pink ******* erfly greets guests outside of "Songteller," part of The Dolly Parton Experience, an all-new attraction at Dollywood theme park.

The Los Angeles Angels placed outfielder Gustavo Campero on the injured list after he came out of Tuesday's loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
Campero injured himself in an attempt to advance from first base to second on a wild pitch in the second inning of Tuesday's loss, pulling up halfway to second base and exiting the game after limping to the base and having a brief conversation with the trainer.
The 28-year-old outfielder had just returned to the team from Triple-A Aug. 22 after outfielder Wade Meckler landed on the concussion injured list. He played in four games afterwards, posting a .788 OPS with two RBIs over the course of those games.
To replace Campero, the Angels recalled outfielder Bryce Teodosio from Triple-A. They also moved the bullpen around, optioning left-hander Blake Weiman and recalling right-hander Trevor Martin.
Teodosio has played 34 games this season, spending most of the year in Triple-A after coming up late in 2025 and posting disappointing numbers. On the year, Teodosio has a .213/.260/.255 slash line for a .515 OPS, and has stolen four bases in five attempts.

Two beloved entertainment icons, born just three months apart in 1946, died at the same age on the same day.Country music legend Dolly Parton and British actor Tim Curry both died at age 80 on Aug. 25, prompting an outpouring of grief and disbelief over the coincidence from fans online.Parton, born Jan. 19, 1946, died in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer. Curry, born April 19, 1946, died at his Los Angeles home. News of Curry's death broke the following day.The pair occupied vastly different corners of pop culture, but each amassed devoted, multigenerational fan bases over careers spanning decades: Parton through her music, acting, philanthropy and unmistakable persona, and Curry through scene-stealing performances in cult classics including "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Clue."
Parton's death was announced Aug. 25 by her nephew Bryan Seaver in a video shared to the country star's social media accounts.
Representatives for Parton later confirmed that the "Jolene" singer died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones.

In my mind, I had this game in the loss column even before first pitch.
The Rays offense looked half asleep yesterday against a lesser pitcher, and today they would be facing Troy Melton, he of the 1.86 ERA. Those of you with good memories will recall that Melton had pitched a gem against the Rays back in June, going eight innings and scattering a few hits. He's a pitcher, Brian Anderson reminded us, who is good across the game but actually gets better second and third time through the line up, so it's not like you can just wait until he tires out to get your offense going.
And for the Rays, Freddy Peralta had looked a little better in recent starts but you really had to squint to see the effective pitcher he'd been prior to this year.
So just based on the pitching matchup, this game had the worst win chances for the Rays of the series.
Of course, then, they won. Because you never know with baseball.
