Zane Smith escaped with no serious injuries following a violent crash in Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway. The driver of the No. 38 suffered a brake failure in the closing laps of Stage 2, causing him to spin out and slam driver's side first into the outside retaining wall in turn 1.
As Smith climbed from his car, it was evident he was in pain. The 27-year-old was slow to get out of his battered Front Row Motorsports Ford and was leaning on two NASCAR safety workers as they helped him into the ambulance to take him to the infield care center.
Thankfully, Smith took to social media on Monday with a positive update on his condition.
Immediately after Smith careened with the outside wall following the brake failure, his spotter, Ryan Blanchard, tried to summon his driver over the radio to check on his condition.
"We lost brakes here. Let me know if you're OK. Really big hit. Talk to me when you can, please. Let me know if you're OK," he said.

Two races into NASCAR's new Chase, the championship standings are already showing how quickly things can change.
Kyle Larson left Darlington 49 points behind Denny Hamlin. One win at Gateway later, he sits second, just nine points back.
Ryan Blaney experienced the opposite. He entered Gateway 16 points behind Hamlin before a brake failure ended his race in 35th. Now he trails by 33.
Next comes Bristol Motor Speedway, and there is no reset waiting on the other side.
Under NASCAR's previous playoff format, drivers raced through elimination rounds with points resets along the way. The 2026 Chase is different. After the initial reseeding, all 10 races count toward the same championship total.

Apple (AAPL) is selling iPhones and Macs faster than it can build them, but the number a holder should fear most is the gross margin underneath those sales. Leaving out tariff refunds, that margin fell in the June quarter and is guided lower again for the September quarter. Management puts both steps down to rising memory prices, while the stock's price-to-earnings multiple sits near the top of its 10-year range.

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Williams Valley Coach Frank Gaffney has said throughout the season that his team is resilient. That showed on Friday night, as the Vikings overcame an early deficit to beat North Schuylkill, 19-14.
North Schuylkill dominated the early action, controlling the ball for much of the first half.
The Spartans opened the game with a seven-minute, 16-play drive that covered 75 yards and ended with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Brake.
The North Schuylkill defense got off to an equally hot start and forced a three-and-out on each of Williams Valley's first two possessions.

For the first time in recent memory, the market doesn't have much of an idea of what the Federal Reserve will do with interest rates at its September meeting. We're less than two weeks away from the Fed's decision, and investors aren't sure whether to expect a rate hike for the first time since 2023 or if the Fed will hold rates steady.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, which monitors how the market is pricing future interest rate movements, there's roughly a 40% chance that rates won't move and a 60% chance of a rate hike. Roughly half of the voting committee favors a hike, and Chair Kevin Warsh didn't offer any forward guidance at Jackson Hole last week. In short, there is considerable uncertainty.

Gabriel India has struck a joint venture deal with South Korea's HL Klemove as it accelerates its expansion beyond core components into advanced mobility and automotive electronics.
As part of the transaction, the Anand Group company will buy a 30% minus one share of the total paid up share capital of HL Klemove India for $98.4m.
In a stock exchange filing, Gabriel India said the alliance is a "significant step" in its "strategy to expand its presence across high-growth automotive segments and participate in the growing demand for autonomous driving solutions including advanced driver **** istance systems (ADAS), and automotive electronic products through this joint venture".
The JV will develop, manufacture and market a range of autonomous driving and automotive electronics offerings tailored for India, including radar modules, front cameras, LiDAR, and automated driving and parking control units that integrate ADAS software.
Beyond ADAS hardware and software, the partnership will also produce key electronic control and sensing products used across modern vehicle platforms – such as brake ECUs, steering ECUs, chassis control units and torque sensors.

Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) jumped 12.6% to a record $152.20 on August 19 after a pivotal melanoma trial validated intismeran autogene, the individualized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Moderna. In the 1,137-patient Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study, intismeran plus Keytruda produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival compared with Keytruda alone. No new safety concerns emerged. Investors are now asking whether intismeran can turn Keytruda from a drug approaching a patent cliff into the foundation of a personalized-cancer platform.
That distinction matters because Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) generated $31.68 billion from Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex in 2025, nearly half of the company's sales. In the U.S., biosimilar competition could begin after Keytruda's primary compound patent expires in December 2028, although biosimilars have already entered some smaller international markets. A successful combination could support continued use of the franchise without removing the need for other growth engines.
The bullish case for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) is that intismeran adds a personalized immune response to a checkpoint inhibitor already embedded across oncology. The treatment is designed from the unique mutations in each patient's tumor and encodes as many as 34 neoantigens, training the immune system to recognize tumor cells while Keytruda removes a brake on the immune response.
Earlier Phase 2b data showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in distant metastasis or death at five years. Phase 3 confirmation makes the approach more credible for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) beyond melanoma. The company is also studying intismeran combinations in non-small cell lung, bladder and renal-cell cancers. Success across several tumor types could create a portfolio of Keytruda combinations rather than a single indication.
That would give Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) another lifecycle-management tool alongside Keytruda Qlex and newer oncology ***** ets. It also strengthens the argument that Keytruda can remain commercially relevant after standalone pembrolizumab faces lower-priced competition.

Portugal have found a rather unexpected way to avenge their FIFA World Cup heartbreak against Spain.
Just over a month after Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by their neighbours, Portugal got one back — not on a football pitch, but on a cricket field.
Portugal defeated Spain by 57 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub Regional Qualifier C in 2026, ending Spain's campaign and keeping their own dream of reaching the 2028 T20 World Cup alive.
The football defeat had come in July, when Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, USA. Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal in stoppage time of regulation time, sending Ronaldo's Portugal out of the tournament.
This time, though, it was Portugal celebrating at Spain's expense.
Led by former Australia international Moises Henriques, Portugal produced a composed performance to claim the crucial qualifying victory.
Spain captain Christian Munoz-Mills won the toss and chose to field, but Portugal built a competitive total of 160/6.
Dhavalkumar Norotam made 23 and Christopher De Freitas scored 39 as Portugal made a steady start without quite managing to dominate the Spanish attack. Henriques, meanwhile, contributed 18 but could not convert his start into a substantial innings.
Portugal accelerated late in the innings through Craig Cachopa, who struck 25 off 21 ****** , while Carlos Nunes added 15 off nine. Jeremy Martins provided an important final push with an unbeaten 18 off just eight deliveries.

Layne Riggs won the race, scoring his series leading sixth victory on the season. Riggs didn't win either of the stages, as those stage wins went to Spire Motorsports' Connor Zilisch. While these two driver had impressive runs, most eyes were following the intense points battle between Tyler Ankrum, Stewart Friesen, and Jake Garcia.
Coming into the race, Ankrum held a 20 point lead over both Friesen and Garcia, however that lead dissipated from the drop of the green flag. Very quickly in stage one, Ankrum battled brake issues and ran outside the top 20 for most of the day. While he struggled, both Garcia and Friesen chipped away at his points gap, as they gained track position throughout the race through strategy.
As the laps were winding down, the battle between the three drivers was within a singular point. It seemed like each lap, everyone was unsure on who was going to win. Then with 6 laps to go, everything changed. Tricon Racing's Gavan Boschele lost control of his truck entering turn one. From there, chaos ensued.

LONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Gold's 9% rebound in August to around $4,400 an ounce suggests bullion is starting to regain favour with institutional investors and central banks, leaving the market better placed to extend gains as it moves beyond the initial shock of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
The outbreak of the war in late February drove gold from a record high of $5,595 per ounce in January to below $4,000 in June as investors sought liquidity and some central banks tapped reserves to support domestic economies amid an oil price rally.
"It feels as though the handbrake has finally been released from gold," said Ross Norman, an independent ****** yst.
Gold prices have broken above two key resistance levels this month, helped by lower oil prices and softer U.S. inflation data that reduced expectations for future rate hikes.

Joey Logano — winner: "My team did a great job. The pressure was on everybody to make the right calls, to execute the runs, to have a good pit stop there. We were door-to-door pretty much onto pit road. That tested everything we had. I thought we were gonna be in good shape because the run before that we were a lot faster than (Chase Briscoe) right at the end, but we weren't able to be the same amount of good as we wanted to be. This is the first time I've had all of my kids here for a win, so this is a real special one for our family. I'm looking forward to enjoying it. It's a great recovery so far. There's a long way to go in the season, but we can see the front from here. We've still got a couple more to gain some more points to set ourselves up better. I just like doing burnouts. That's really all there is to it. I thought it was a cool opportunity to do a burnout right here. I might get my hand slapped, but it was worth it."
Chase Briscoe — second: "Yeah, I don't know what more I needed. I thought that last run I was a little bit better than him. To get there at the end, prior run to the pit stop, I just lost brakes, got really, really loose. Gave up a three-second advantage. That was ultimately the difference. One bad run. Like I said, that was the difference maker there in the end. It's weird to be running second here. This has been a real struggle to me, this place. I think that's my first ever top 10 here even. To get close, not get it done is so frustrating. I had a really fast Toyota and wasn't able to seal the deal there in the end. The brake deal was interesting. I had great brakes. I felt like a large majority of the race it was to my advantage. I could get into the corner so deep compared to everyone. As I kind of lost that, I lost my advantage. I came not mediocre, but I wasn't quite as strong as what I needed to be to maintain there. Yeah, definitely frustrating from that standpoint, but still huge improvement from what I've been here, for sure. Go on to the next one. Yeah, that's great (to clinch a Chase spot). Daniel Cormier wants Ali Abdelaziz to pump the brakes on PFL champion Usman Nurmagomedov's chances against top UFC lightweights.
Nurmagomedov (22-0) is a free agent after knocking out Archie Colgan in the first-round of the PFL New York main event earlier this month. If Nurmagomedov does end up signing with the UFC, his manager, Abdelaziz, claimed on the "Pound 4 Pound" podcast that he would have his way with Ilia Topuria, Paddy Pimblett, Charles Oliveira, and Max Holloway – which Cormier thinks is an absurd statement to make.
"I get it, that's your guy, you're a promoter, but you're speaking about the absolute best guys in the world," Cormier said on his YouTube channel. "Now, to have faith and think Usman Nurmagomedov can fight these guys, absolutely. ... I think Usman Nurmagomedov is special. I think Usman Nurmagomedov, if he comes to the UFC, immediately becomes one of the top contenders in the organization. I have seen this young man train. I have seen him work. I know that he has championship-level experience."
While Nurmagomedov got some of that championship-level experience through two tough outings against Paul Hughes, Cormier said the UFC would be a step up in competition.
"As good as the Irish kid is, the UFC guys are better," Cormier said. "So you would imagine that these fights would be ultra competitive, but that's the beauty in having a guy separate himself from the world in a different organization. That's the beauty because while what Ali says is very out there, when he looks at that group of fighters, he would expect that because that's all they've really done. Umar has done very well. We may have gotten an answer on the "soreness" that has kept San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa out of the team's last four training camp practices.
The 49ers haven't specified the nature of Bosa's soreness, but NBC's Mike Florio on Monday's Pro Football Talk Live said Bosa is dealing with back soreness. However, Florio seemingly walked back his declaration almost immediately.
After saying Bosa is working through back soreness, which is the first time a reporter has pointed toward a specific ailment for the 28-year-old defensive end, Florio teed up a clip of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talking about Bosa on Saturday while addressing reporters in a press conference.
"No. He was doing great, and then he got sore just going through some of the individual," Shanahan said. "You wish that didn't happen, but no, there's no concern to where something's happened that is a big setback or anything. We'll wait until the soreness goes away and evaluate why the soreness has happened, but I still feel pretty good about that."
In reacting to the Shanahan quote Florio pumped the brakes on the nature of Bosa's injury, citing "the sheet" instead of a source as he would for a typical report.

A game in Uruguay's second division led to a surreal situation this Saturday (8).
The match between Uruguay Montevideo and Paysandú featured a huge clearance that caused a traffic accident on the highway running alongside the stadium.
The ball cleared out of the field landed on the road, made one car brake, and the vehicle coming right behind crashed into its rear.
The scene at Parque ANCAP stadium in Montevideo was caught by the match broadcast itself and quickly spread on social media.

In my column today, I look at whether high and rising bond yields will slam the brakes on Wall Street. Intuitively, there's a good chance. But if rising borrowing costs are a reflection of stronger nominal growth and a healthy economy, then not necessarily.

Hull City tried their luck. It failed. Nicolas Raskin has flatly turned down an approach from the newly-promoted Premier League outfit, despite the Yorkshire side putting a hefty sum on the table. According to reports from the Daily Record, Hull were ready to meet Rangers' valuation in principle, but the player's camp slammed the brakes on the whole thing. He simply has no interest in moving to the MKM Stadium.
It leaves the Tigers stranded. TEAMtalk and the Yorkshire Post suggest Hull put forward somewhere between £12m and £14m. Rangers, however, are clinging to a valuation north of £20m. That is a massive gap in Scottish football terms. Hull might have the cash from their promotion, but they face a steep mountain if they think a second attempt will change Raskin's mind. Money is only half the battle here. The player wants elite European football, and his representatives are working overtime to land a move to a far bigger stage.
To understand the Belgian's ambition, you only have to look at his last 12 months. It was a standout year. Across 33 Scottish Premiership outings during the 2025/26 campaign, he notched six goals and seven ***** ists. He clocked nearly 2,800 minutes in domestic action, finishing as the top-rated player in the entire Rangers squad with an average rating of 7.54. Throw in eight appearances in the Europa League, and it becomes clear why he was the engine driving Ibrox.
Then came the World Cup. Raskin took that domestic form straight to North America, starting every group match for Belgium. His display in the 4-1 thrashing of the USA on 4 July turned plenty of heads across the continent. Now, the suitors are lining up. Real Betis, Atalanta, Bologna, and Tottenham Hotspur are all monitoring the situation. Teams across La Liga and Serie A have sniffed around, along with several established Premier League sides.

Schubert BMW driver Kelvin van der Linde was incredibly lucky during his horror crash in Saturday's DTM race at the Norisring. Former DTM champion Rene Rast believes that if his BMW M4 GT3 Evo had been further into the Grundig-Hairpin, the impact from Maximilian Paul's unbraked Lamborghini would have had much worse consequences.
"Of course Kelvin was extremely unlucky to get hit, but on the other hand, he was also extremely lucky because if he had been five meters further into the corner, the angle would have been completely different," Rast told ran.de. "He could have been hit much more from the side."
In fact, the South African had just turned in when the Lamborghini hit the area of the left front wheel and the left door at high speed. Had he been at the apex, the impact would have occurred at a right angle, meaning the chassis would have taken the full force of the hit.
Rast also sees the fact that the Lamborghini Temerario GT3, which weighs around 1,400 kilograms including the driver, is a mid-engine car as a positive factor. "If the car had been a Mercedes or a Ford, for example, with the engine in the front and where the nose is much higher than the Lamborghini, it would have ended very differently."
The low Lamborghini hit the BMW at a more favorable spot, and furthermore, the front of the Italian sports car gave way, which would have been completely different with an engine in the front of the car.

Skateboarders will reach speeds of more than 70mph (112km/h) when the World Downhill Skateboarding Championship returns to the Isle of Man this weekend.
The boards, with wheels "the size of half a ****** e can" and no brakes, will race down a stretch of the island's famous TT course.
More than 5,000 hay bales have been laid out along the course to catch any riders who come a cropper.
Event organiser Selim Kemahli said competitors would go "toe-to-toe and shoulder-to-shoulder" while racing down to the Ramsey hairpin.
This year's course will run from Joey's Corner and finish past the Ramsey Hairpin.
