Today, of course, is the anniversary of an event that means so much more than baseball. Twenty-five years ago, the September 11th attacks rocked the US, especially in New York. There are commemorations of all sort taking place around the country today. While the tragedy of that day in 2001 means more than baseball, in New York, the two baseball teams will honor the day in their own way: playing baseball. Starting tonight, the Subway Series is back for a weekend set, beginning on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
To go to the baseball for a minute, Carlos Rodón will get the start for the Yankees in this one. For the season, Rodón's numbers are generally pretty good, but his habit of taking a little too long to put away batters tends to prevent him from going long. While the Yankees didn't have to use too many crucial arms, the bullpen did have to pitch a decent amount of innings yesterday, so they could use a good day from Rodón.
As for the rest of the lineup, Aaron Judge is back after getting last night off, while Anthony Volpe is at second again after his five RBI performance.
For the Mets, Nolan McLean will take the mound. He's been really good for them, posting a 3.06 ERA in 161.2 innings. Across his last dozen starts, the rookie has been even better, with an even lower ERA of 1.87.

Anthony Volpe did not have a quiet return to the big leagues. He made it as loud as he could, and he did it with his bat during Thursday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
In his first game back to the majors, Volpe went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. His grand slam in the seventh inning further buried the Rockies, as it stretched New York's lead to eight runs, 10-2. The Yankees ultimately won the game to the tune of a 10-3 score.
"Unexpected whirlwind," the 25-year-old Volpe said following the game, describing what the past 24 hours had been for him (h/t Gary Phillips of NY Daily News Sports).

The Rockies hung around for most of Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Then the seventh inning happened.
Colorado had just pulled within two runs when the Yankees answered with six in the bottom half, capped by Anthony Volpe's grand slam, and turned a quiet, almost competitive game into a 10-3 rout.
The loss completed a three-game sweep and dropped the Rockies to 55-91, while New York improved to 84–62. John Schreiber earned the win for the Yankees, while Ryan Feltner fell to 5-10.
For much of the night, though, the final score did not match the feel of the game. The Yankees grabbed an early lead, but Feltner settled in, Colorado kept finding small openings and New York never quite put the game away.

NEW YORK — As the freshly-promoted Anthony Volpe settled into a new locker inside the Yankees' clubhouse on Thursday, he said that he felt as if he had been in a "bubble" at Triple-A.
Not because he was stuck in the minors, but because he was focused on trying to improve his game. Volpe said he was so locked in that he didn't even realize Jazz Chisholm Jr. sprained his thumb on Tuesday until RailRiders manager Shelley Duncan told him.
"I wanted to get a lot out of it," Volpe, recalled on Thursday after Chisholm was placed on the 10-day injured list, said of Triple-A. "You have a game every night to try out different stuff and feel what works and feel like it's going to translate in case an opportunity like this comes. So there was just a lot of trial and error."
On Thursday, however, Volpe only found results, going 3 for 4 with a grand slam that broke open the Yankees' series-sweeping, 10-3 win over the Rockies. The seventh-inning blast earned the New York native a curtain call from a crowd that has booed him plenty over the last few years.
Volpe, batting ninth, also had an RBI single and a stolen base on Thursday. He didn't make an error while starting at second base for the first time as a big leaguer, either.

With the Yankees looking to track down the Rays in the AL East while also maintaining the cushion they have on the Red Sox, this interleague matchup against the Rockies was a couple of must win games. Colorado is closing in on 100 losses and is as beatable an opponent as there is right now, sorry to them. Well so far, so good for the Yankees as they've taken the first two games of the series. Tonight, they'll go for the sweep.
To try and accomplish that sweep, the Yankees will give the ball to Max Fried. This will be Fried's third start since returning from the IL, and he's been decent enough so far, allowing two runs in 9.1 combined innings. He still hasn't gone over 72 pitches yet, so it's still unlikely that he'll be airing it out for 100 or anything tonight, but we'll see.
As for the rest of the lineup, the big news is the return of Anthony Volpe. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. going on the IL, Volpe has been recalled and will play second base. He has been hitting decently since getting sent back to the minors, so we'll see if there's any correlation now that he's back in the bigs. Aaron Judge will get a planned day off, his first since being reinstated from the IL on Tuesday as Aaron Boone will take it slow with his superstar outfielder especially after Judge returned without a rehab ***** ignment. Jasson Domínguez will start in right field instead and bat third, flanked by Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr.
Meanwhile, Ryan Feltner will take the mound for the Rockies. Feltner has a 5.91 ERA and a 5.27 FIP in his 106.2 innings on the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was having a decent year by Rockies pitchers standards until about mid-July, when a 2.1 inning eight-run disaster outing against Cincinnati ballooned his ERA north of five and he's stayed there ever since. His latest start was a mediocre one, where he lasted five innings and gave up four runs to the Cardinals, but he's got some seven-run outings in recent memory as the Dodgers and Nationals took him to task a couple of weeks ago.

NEW YORK – Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s sprained right thumb was in a soft cast Thursday, two days into a period of no baseball activity for 7-10 days.
But the Yankees' left-hitting second baseman expects to return before the regular season ends.
"I'm confident in my healing abilities,'' Chisholm said a few hours before Thursday night's game against Colorado, with Anthony Volpe inserted at second base.
Manager Aaron Boone repeated that his choice at second base would be a daily decision between Volpe and Jose Caballero – a situation that mirrors the Yanks' first-half shortstop dilemma.
But the rookie George Lombard Jr. is entrenched now at short.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders first place push is much in thanks to the MiLB International League Player of the Week Anthony Volpe leading off its lineup. Volpe won the weekly award after a stellar series against the Worcester Red Sox.
Volpe finished the week 11 of 21 from the plate, hitting .524 against Worcester. The RailRiders infielder hit three doubles, and three home runs in six games. Volpe drove in six runs and scored eight times of his own. He stole five bags over the six-game set, on top of three base on ******* .
Since his returned to the RailRiders lineup Volpe has blasted 10 home runs in a month's time back in Triple-A. His return has aided Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's chase for the second half playoff push. SWB is currently a game out of first place behind Rochester.

The No. 18 ranked TCU volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2026 season Sunday, sweeping UNLV 25-17, 25-16, 33-31 to close out the Players Era Volleyball Showcase in Las Vegas. The Horned Frogs hit .264 as a team and limited the Rebels to a .139 hitting rate. Evan Hendrix posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs for the Horned Frogs (1-1), who hit over .300 in the first two sets. Jalyn Gibson added eight kills on a .444 hitting rate.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders pulled to within two games of first place with a 9-2 win on Wednesday night over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put up four runs in the first inning, never trailing in the win over the I-Pigs.
Jasson Dominguez started the scoring in the first with a single to right field, bringing in Jarred Kelenic. The next batter J.C. Escarra continued the hit parade with a single to shallow right. That brought in Anthony Volpe, putting runners on the corners for Marco Luciano. The SWB second baseman drove a ball to the wall to bring in Dominguez. Oswaldo Cabrera ended the merry-go-round with a fielder's choice, and a fourth run for the RailRiders.
Yanquiel Fernandez matched Double-R's first four runs, with four runs driven in of his own. Fernandez hit two home runs on Wednesday, his team leading 23rd and 24th of the season. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre DH went 3-for-4 on the night, with two home runs and four RBI.
New York Yankees pitcher Clark Schmidt started the game for the RailRiders. The start was Schmidt's second rehab start since having elbow surgery last July. Schmidt pitched 0.2 innings last Saturday for the Yankees Double-A team.
Schmidt tossed 2.0 innings for SWB on Wednesday night. He struck out three batters, while also allowing one run on three hits.

NEW YORK - It's a fairly quick turnover at Yankee Stadium, after the Yanks' comeback, 10-inning win against the Braves that ended after midnight.
And it's a terrific Saturday afternoon matchup, with Braves' lefty Chris Sale (12-6, 2.08) opposing Gerrit Cole (5-5, 3.42) in a 3:05 p.m. start.
Before Cole takes the mound, there'll be a traditional Old-Timer's Day Game played here - of course, on one of the hottest, most humid of early summer afternoons.
Anyway, Cole is coming off a pair of wins at Chicago, limiting the White Sox and Cubs to a combined one earned run across 11.2 innings on the Yanks' last road trip.

Cayden Wallace broke the game open with a first-inning grand slam, and the Rochester Red Wings rode a four-homer night to a 13-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday at PNC Field.
Rochester (66-44) sent nine men to the plate in the opening inning and scored six times. Phillip Glasser and Yohandy Morales scored on consecutive bases-loaded walks by Riley Adams and Sam Petersen before Wallace drove a grand slam to left field for his third homer of the season.
The RailRiders trimmed the deficit to 6-2 on Anthony Volpe's two-run homer in the third, but Rochester answered in the fourth. Wallace singled, advanced on a walk and hit-by-pitch, then scored when Seaver King reached on a forceout.
Morales extended the lead with a solo homer to left-center in the fifth, his 22nd of the season. Maxwell Romero Jr. followed with a solo shot in the sixth, his fourth homer in the last three games, to push Rochester's advantage to 9-3.
The Red Wings added four insurance runs in the ninth. Romero's two-out single scored Trey Lipscomb, and Leandro Pineda followed with a three-run homer to right-center that scored Wallace and Romero.

When Anthony Volpe reports to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, manager Shelley Duncan anticipates the shortstop to see some action at second base and possibly third base.
"There's a good chance of that," Duncan said. "We'll see when he gets here. Us as an organization, we'll have a plan in place for him. Anthony will be a part of that plan. We'll move forward accordingly for what's best for him and what's best for the organization."
Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, and Max Schuemann were all sent down by the Yankees on Monday following the fallout of the Trade Deadline and the promotion of top prospect George Lombard Jr. Schuemann arrived and played for the RailRiders on Wednesday night. Duncan expected Volpe and Dominguez to join the team by Friday; they had 72 hours to report.
The trio will be joining an already-good RailRiders squad. Despite having their eight-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with an 8-1 loss to the Rochester Red Wings at PNC Field, the RailRiders are in first place in the International League second-half standings with a 23-10 record, one-half game ahead of the Durham Bulls. Overall, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate is 60-47. They are one of four teams in the 20-team league with 60 or more wins. Rochester has 64, the St. Paul Saints 63, and first-half champion Memphis Redbirds 62. During the RailRiders' six-game series sweep at Iowa last week, they batted .343 with 79 hits, including 11 home runs, and outscored the Cubs, 50-18.
Heading into Thursday's action, the RailRiders rank fourth in the IL in home runs with 152. On the mound, they rank first in ERA (4.14), hits allowed (774), runs allowed (492), earned runs allowed (423), WHIP (1.33), and opponents' batting average (.227). They're also tied for first in shutouts (7), rank second in home runs allowed (104), and tied for third in saves (29).

Things obviously didn't go as planned for former New York Yankees starting shortstop Anthony Volpe, who was recently sent to Triple-A on Monday night to make room for the debut of George Lombard. Lombard, who's expected to come in and have a major impact on the Yankees, finds himself in a good spot to win a job.
The reality is that Volpe didn't do enough on either side of the baseball and, as a result, was sent down. However, while most fans understood how poorly he was playing throughout the past few seasons, it was actually even worse than it sounded.
One ESPN writer brought up a crazy stat recently, which suggested that Volpe was among the three worst hitters in Major League Baseball.
"Like Lombard, Volpe was the Yankees' top prospect when they named him their Opening Day shortstop in 2023. Born in Manhattan and raised in New Jersey as a die-hard Yankees fan, Volpe arrived with great expectations. He has not fulfilled them.

The Yankees' offense better wake up, as they've scored just two unearned runs in their last 22 innings. Facing a Cubs team that ranks second in the majors with 5.17 runs scored per game and third with a 111 wRC+, they simply cannot afford to give so many ABs away, New York failing to dent home plate in 28 of their last 32 innings played. Fortunately, they'll face a pitching staff that is seventh-worst with a 4.68 FIP, though it's not like the White Sox were much better in that department and were still largely able to silence the Yankees in the final two games of their just-completed series.
Will Warren is coming off one of his worst starts of the season — six runs on six hits in three innings against the Phillies. It's already the fifth start in which he has given up at least five runs, four of those coming since June 20th, Warren posting a 6.57 ERA over his last eight starts after opening the season at 7-1 with a 3.22 ERA across his first 12 starts. To me, the problems appear to be threefold: he can't get lefties out, he struggles to pitch from the stretch, and he suffers a massive third-time-through penalty. That doesn't bode well against a Cubs lineup that features five batters from the left side and is second in baseball with a .340 OBP. In 20 starts, Warren is 7-5 with a 4.41 ERA (102 ERA+), 4.16 FIP, and 102 strikeouts in 102 innings.
The Cubs declined their three-year team option on Shota Imanaga over the winter after he struggled in 2025, the two sides eventually reuniting on the qualifying offer for 2026. He has rewarded that renewed faith with a rebound performance, gaining a mph back on his fastball which has seen his chase and strikeout rates tick back up to his stellar rookie campaign marks in 2024. The 32-year-old lefty relies on hitters getting themselves out rather than overwhelming you with stuff, the four-seamer acting as a setup pitch for his splitter and sweeper. The Yankees are getting him at an awful time as Imanaga is coming off consecutive scoreless starts of at least six innings. In 21 starts, Imanaga is 7-8 with a 3.72 ERA (109 ERA+), 4.39 FIP, and 113 strikeouts in 121 innings.
The Yankees opt for their usual lineup against lefties, but with a pair of notable changes. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is not in the lineup after exiting yesterday's loss in the 11th with cramps, which allows Spencer Jones a rare start against a lefty in right as José Caballero is forced to man second. Amed Rosario, Anthony Volpe, and Ali Sánchez will be tasked with carrying their weight with the supposed platoon advantage against the soft-tossing lefty.
The Cubs stack their lineup with lefties against Warren. Leading off is the MLB position player leader in fWAR (7.1) in Pete Crow-Armstrong, the All-World center fielder leading baseball with 21 Outs Above Average and sixth in wRC+ (152) as he makes a legitimate push to challenge Shohei Ohtani for the NL MVP. It's trade deadline season, and though this has been a tame deadline period so far, the continuous swirl of rumors and (eventually) actual transactions will be the focus of much of the baseball world in the coming days. Yesterday, we discussed which players the Yankees were most likely to move, and today, we ask: what weakness do the Yankees most need to address, and which one are they most likely to address?
The answer to this question has been fluid throughout the year. Early on, it seemed obvious to most that the Yankees would need to make big additions to their bullpen, yet here we are at the end of July, and the Yankee relief corps has the second-best ERA in the majors. Paul Blackburn has proven to be the second coming of Luke Weaver, Brent Headrick almost never allows runs, David Bednar has been the top-tier closer the team envisioned, and Matt Blake's latest reclamation project, Angel Chivilli, has looked dynamite since his most recent call-up. Add in the fact that players like Will Warren and Ryan Weathers (and perhaps Carlos Lagrange?) could get shifted to the bullpen if they're not traded, and the unit looks like an area of strength, not weakness.
At other times, the matter of the infield appeared to be most pressing. Ryan McMahon and Jazz Chisholm Jr. each got off to nightmarish starts, and the shortstop duo of Anthony Volpe and José Caballero has had its ups and downs. But even on the dirt, things don't look nearly as shaky as they did two or three months ago. Since seeing his OPS bottom out at .498 on April 22nd, Chisholm has played exactly as expected, with a .239/.309/.463 slash line and 16 homers plus 21 steals. McMahon has run a roughly .750 OPS over the last two months while bringing his usual quality defense at third base. And despite his penchant for high-profile miscues, Volpe's combination of high-OBP and good range at short has made him a valuable contributor.
Then, there's the most obvious need now, at catcher, with Yankee backstops having combined to "hit" .181/.261/.284. But even adding a catcher comes with major complications, as most teams are loath to make significant changes to their caching room midseason. For as awful as Austin Wells and Co. have been with the bat this year, a catcher's primary job is to catch, to field his position, to manage his pitching staff. The Yankee backstops have done that portion of their job with aplomb this year (it's probably not a coincidence that the Yankees prioritize defense at catcher and have the best team ERA in baseball), and it's not trivial to just add a plus bat to that room without shaking things up on the run-prevention front.
Add it all up, and it leaves the Yankee roster in a weird spot heading into a crucial deadline. The roster has been slammed by injuries and has some seemingly clear places to upgrade, but actually making those upgrades is less straightforward than it might appear. What do you think? The Yankees (61-46) look to make it three straight over the White Sox (55-51) tonight at Rate Field following last night's 3-2 win.
Last night was a tightly contested pitching duel that saw the Yankees build an early lead and then survive a late White Sox rally. New York scored all three of its runs in the second inning against White Sox starter Anthony Kay. The rally began when Jasson Domínguez singled and Trent Grisham followed with a hit. Anthony Volpe then drilled an RBI double to deep center field, scoring Domínguez. Two batters later, Max Schuemann delivered the biggest hit of the game, a two-run double that plated both Grisham and Volpe for a 3-0 Yankees lead. The story for most of the evening, though, was Gerrit Cole, who looked dominant in his sixth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Cole worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Chicago struggled to generate offense until the ninth inning. Yankees closer David Bednar entered looking for his 22nd save, but Braden Montgomery singled and Chase Meidroth followed with a dramatic two-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Bednar regrouped, however, striking out former Yankee Everson Pereira to end the game and secure the save.
The Yankees have now won five of their last six games and are within 1½ games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East, while the White Sox remain atop the AL Central despite dropping four of their last five.
It seemed like the Sox were facing the ace of the Yankees' staff last night but tonight Chicago must face New York's current ace, Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2-07 ERA). His most recent start came on July 24 against the Phillies. He threw 7.1 shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out 12. The White Sox will send Davis Martin (9-5, 3.49 ERA) to the **** p. The right-hander has had a breakthrough season but has been inconsistent of late allowing 12 earned runs over his last 18 innings.

The White Sox (55-51) waited until the bottom of the ninth to score any runs, and ironically ended up outhitting the Yankees (61-46), but they couldn't make the full comeback and fell just short, 3-2. Chase Meidroth saved the day from a 3-0 shutout, mashing a homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the bats were mostly quiet and couldn't provide run support for their pitching staff.
Giving the White Sox bullpen a bit of a reprieve from Monday night, Anthony Kay labored through 5 1/3 innings, looking sharp outside of his 29-pitch second inning. The lefty started the game on a high note by striking out the side in the top of the first — the first three of seven Ks during today's outing — but we can't say the same about the next frame.
Back-to-back singles from Jasson Domínguez and Trent Grisham led off the second frame and kicked off their three-run rally. Kay uncorked a wild pitch to move both runners into scoring position before Anthony Volpe lined a double off the top of the wall in right, scoring Domínguez. The southpaw worked around Jazz Chisholm Jr. with a strikeout, but Max Schuemann doubled to left to score another two runs to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
Kay was otherwise solid, and when a batter did reach base, he was able to work around it. The main issue, however, is that he received zero run support from the offense, which mustered only three hits while Kay was in the game. It helped that Kay gutted through five-plus innings, but without any run support, it hardly mattered.
Kay put Domínguez on for the second time to lead off the sixth, hitting his 20th batter of the season, and his 10th batter in his last nine starts. Though there was some weird communication between Tristan Peters and Braden Montgomery in right-center, Braden was able to snow cone the ball at the last second for the out.

Was it ideal that the Bombers fell behind on Monday night, struggled to put the Sox away when they gained a lead, and forced their closer to grab the final out? Not exactly, but they got the win. Was it ideal that the Yankees failed to add any insurance runs to the three-run lead they grabbed in the second inning tonight? Not exactly, but they got the win. Was it ideal that David Bednar had to take the mound for the fourth time in five games, losing his 24.2-inning scoreless streak on a two-run homer that made it close right at the end? Not exactly, but they got the win.
Bednar and the bats have Gerrit Cole to thank. Despite some turbulence in the fourth inning, Cole was the pristine pilot on the ******* p that the Yanks needed. Powered by the effort from number 45, the Yankees won 3-2, and gained a full game on the Rays in the American League East standings.
The Bombers' first two trips to the bat rack couldn't have progressed more differently. In the first, Anthony Kay struck out the side to make quick work of the top of the order. In the second, the first two batters Kay faced reached with well-struck singles, giving Anthony Volpe an RBI opportunity. Volpe charged a ball deep to left center where Tristan Peters nearly tracked it down at the wall. But Peters was unable to come down with the catch, the ball stayed in play, and Jasson Domínguez scored for an early 1-0 lead.

The Yankees scored early and held on, despite some ninth inning dramatics, to beat the White Sox, 3-2.
-- Anthony Volpe put the Yankees on the board in the second inning, nearly hitting a three-run home run, but settling for an RBI double that bounced off CF Tristan Peters' glove. Max Schuemann then found a way to drive the other runners in, bouncing a double over third base to give the Yanks an early 3-0 lead.
Luckily, that was all they needed.
-- Gerrit Cole dazzled in his 12th start of the year, tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed just four hits and walked two, lowering his ERA to 3.57.
The right-hander breezed through the first three innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. He then ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth inning as Munetaka Murakami doubled and two walks loaded the bases, but found a way to escape without a run crossing the plate after 32 pitches.

The New York Yankees offense is struggling right now, and Cody Bellinger's injury only makes things worse.
The Yankees are currently without Aaron Judge, Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. On top of that, they seem to have no actual solution for third base and shortstop, where Anthony Volpe and Ryan McMahon continue to struggle. Knowing Judge, Bellinger and Stanton could return soon, the Yankees are unlikely to add a superstar outfielder or designated hitter. However, adding an infielder could do wonders for the offense if that infielder were Luis Arraez.
Luckily for the Yankees, the San Francisco Giants will be sellers at the deadline, and Arraez is a rental they could look to deal away. He is hitting .326 with an .811 OPS on the year. He has improved his slugging while maintaining a high average. Not to mention, he is having an elite year defensively at second base. Defense was always seen as a downside for Arraez, but that is not the case this year.
How would Arraez fit in on the Yankees? Well, for starters, he would slot in at second base. That would allow the Yankees to move Chisholm to third base or shortstop, getting rid of either Volpe or McMahon as a regular. McMahon has already started to lose at-bats, so perhaps it's time the Yankees make a permanent change.

Once again on Monday night, New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe came under immense scrutiny regarding his defensive miscue. However, the Chicago White Sox failed to make a comeback out of it.
In the ninth inning with one out remaining and the Yankees leading by five runs, Volpe dropped a routine fly ball off Colson Montgomery. As a result, White Sox's leading runner, Sam Antonacci, came around to score as the game continued. Yankees reliever Camilo Doval was taken out of the game, and David Bednar had to walk in to get the final out. In the end, the Yankees won 9-5.
Despite Volpe's error not impacting the result of the game significantly, the Yankees shortstop received harsh treatment from fans.
"The never ending proof of why he should be nowhere near the majors. HE IS NOT FIT FOR THIS LEVEL OF BALL Yankees!!!" one fan wrote. "Can somebody, ANYBODY, send him down for good or trade him already?!?!? What's it gonna take?!?!?"
"He had no business trying to catch that. Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] should've been there or an outfielder. This is ridiculous," another added.

Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth laced a liner to the left field wall.
Down a run with two outs in the seventh inning, Colson Montgomery attempted to score from first base. New York Yankees left fielder Max Schuemann made a one-hop throw to shortstop Anthony Volpe, who threw out Montgomery at the plate.
"There were two outs, we all know (Justin Jirschele), I think he's one of the best third-base coaches — he gets really good reads," Montgomery said. "I feel like I got a pretty good jump off it. Lefty (Brent Headrick) on the mound, I felt I couldn't really get too far off first base. I thought I got a pretty good jump and I thought I was going to score. They're good players, too, and made decent relays."
The Yankees added some breathing room with four runs in the eighth, featuring a three-run home run by Ali Sánchez, and defeated the Sox 9-5 in front of 22,357 at Rate Field on Monday.
The Sox saw an early three-run lead evaporate on the way to dropping the opener of the four-game series.

It wasn't a pretty opening to the series, but the Yankees found their way Monday night in Chicago. Max Fried struggled mightily in his second start returning from the IL, putting them in a big hole early with an offense that hasn't been ****** e to exploding lately, but a pair of big innings turned this game from a deficit to a 9-5 win.
Last time out Fried was extremely sharp, going five strong despite a low pitch limit blanking the Pirates with just a single hit and walk going against him. Randal Grichuk greeted him with a leadoff double, and the wheels fell off from there. Munetaka Murakami followed up with a single to put runners on the corners, and after Fried struck out Miguel Vargas for the first out of the inning Colson Montgomery ripped a single to the right side that Jazz Chisholm Jr. barely couldn't corral scoring Grichuk. Chase Meridoth was up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a second run, and then Braden Montgomery lined a triple over the head of a diving Max Schuemann that brought in a third. It looked like Schuemann might've gotten messed up leaping for the ball, which would've complicated things for a Yankees team that is already down two of their starting outfielders, but thankfully he shook it off and stayed in the game.

Fried calmed down from there, working two straight clean frames, but the Yankee offense wasn't getting anything going at first against the rookie Noah Schultz, who entered the game with a gaudy 6.04 ERA. Paul Goldschmidt managed a two-out single in the top of the first, but the lineup otherwise went down in order the first time through. The fourth inning finally saw them break though, starting off with a pair of walks from Ben Rice and Goldschmidt to set up a rally. Jasson Domínguez singled to left but it was hit hard enough to prevent a run from coming in, bringing Anthony Volpe up with the bases loaded and no outs. Volpe managed to bring in a run, hitting a soft grounder to short that Luisangel Acuña was just barely able to scoop up and throw to first in time to convert an out from the play.
That would be all for Schultz, as the White Sox went to their 'pen and brought in Chris Murphy. The tide was turning though, and Chisholm provided the big blow of the inning with a double out to center to tie the game at three. Chisholm then stole third base on a head's up play noticing that the catcher was lazily flicking the ball back to the pitcher, and José Caballero walked to pass the baton over to Spencer Jones. Jones managed to convert, fighting off three foul ****** before grounding a ball in front of Caballero who was running on the pitch to prevent a double play opportunity and give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler entered this game with a 4.77 ERA and the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. Of course, that means the Yankees got blanked and drew just one walk in his 6.1 innings of work. Fortunately, Max Fried was even more dominant in his first start back from injury in over two months, the two starters trading zeroes long enough for the Yankees to strike against the Bucs’ bullpen. A Jasson Domínguez RBI double and Anthony Volpe RBI single in the seventh proved the decisive blows as the Yankees did just enough to win, 2-0, to split the doubleheader and win the series.
Fans of sharp defensive execution were in for a treat in the first inning. Fried looked to have given up a surefire double down the line in left to leadoff batter Nick Gonzales, but Cody Bellinger played the carom off the sidewall perfectly and fired an inch-perfect throw to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, who barely had to move his glove to apply the tag to Gonzales’ foot. The next batter Jared Triolo got down a decent bunt to the left, but the four-time Gold Glover Fried was quick off his mound to field it and fire a strike to first. Fried finished the inning with a swinging strikeout of Bryan Reynolds on an elevated 98.3 mph four-seamer, his fastest pitch of the season. That high water mark wouldn’t last long, as the next inning he punched out Marcell Ozuna looking on a 99 mph four-seamer.
Perhaps a side effect of Fried being on a pitch count of just 60 pitches — the amount planned for a second rehab start that got scrapped in lieu of him starting this game — Fried’s fastball was coming out hot the whole outing. It averaged over 96 mph this afternoon, which is almost two mph above his season average. It is particularly encouraging given that the bone bruise Fried suffered manifested itself as significantly reduced pitch velocity in the May 13th start against the Orioles that he was forced to depart after three innings. That’s a roundabout way of saying that Fried now appears fully healthy.
Fried’s day was finished after five scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts on 57 pitches, efficiently using nearly all of those 60 pitches he was allotted for this start. The four-seamer was as good as I’ve seen from him in pinstripes, and it wasn’t just the velocity. He was able to consistently paint the top ledge of the zone with the pitch, creating ample opportunity for chase and swing-and-miss against the secondaries which resulted in a 37-percent whiff rate on the day.

The Yankees came oh so close to completing another late comeback, only to stall out after Ben Rice’s game-tying three-run homer and eventually lose in extras. They still have a chance to split the doubleheader and win the series as they take the field less than three hours after the final out of Game 1, and they’ll do so as Max Fried makes his long-awaited return from injury.
Max Fried last pitched on May 13th against the Orioles, and had to depart after three innings with noticeably lowered velocity on all his pitches. It was later revealed that he had suffered a bone bruise in his left elbow and was shut down for over a month. He made just one rehab **** ignment start last Friday for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks on 52 pitches. Rather than make a final rehab start, the doubleheader convinced the Yankees to activate Fried off the IL to start the nightcap, where he will be on a pitch count of around 60. At the time of his injury, Fried was 4-3 in ten starts, with a 3.21 ERA (132 ERA+), 2.71 FIP, and 50 strikeouts in 61.2 innings.
Fried will face off against Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler. The 23-year-old righty isn’t very subtle, mainly trying to blow you away with a four-seamer that averages 99 mph. He backs up that heater with a slider and a changeup. Expect the Yankees to have a patient approach against the pitcher with the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. In 18 starts, Chandler is 3-8 with a 4.77 ERA (92 ERA+), 4.59 FIP, and 85 strikeouts in 94.1 innings.
The Yankees make three changes to the line from the day game. Anthony Volpe replaces José Caballero at shortstop which should ease tensions with this umpiring crew after the incident involving his pitch clock manipulation earlier today. Paul Goldschmidt gets the start at first moving Ben Rice to DH and Spencer Jones to the bench. Ali Sánchez replaces Austin Wells behind the plate.
The Pirates also make three changes to their lineup with the lefty Fried on the mound. Marcell Ozuna comes in to DH, moving Ryan O’Hearn to first and Tyler Callihan to the bench. Jared Triolo replaces Jacob Gonzalez at shortstop despite the latter homering off Gerrit Cole while Rafael Flores Jr. subs in for Henry Davis at catcher.

Trading the organization's longtime shortstop would be a drastic shift from the current core of New York's roster, outside of Juan Soto.

It would be pretty surprising to see the New York Yankees move on from Anthony Volpe at the moment, and much of that is because it would amount to admitting defeat.
In years past, the Yankees haven't really wanted to do that, and it's obvious at the moment that they don't want to as well because they would have moved on from Volpe a long time ago had that been the case.
However, others are starting to believe that it's a real possibility. In fact, The Athletic even named him a possible trade candidate, adding that Volpe just isn't the same type of guy that he once was, and his former status as a top prospect with some years of control left could entice teams.
"At this point, Volpe is who he is. By metrics, he plays solid defense, even if the eye test suggests otherwise. He'll likely never top the 21 homers he hit in 2023, and strikeouts will certainly continue to be a problem. His remaining years of control are enticing, as is his pedigree as a former top prospect," The Athletic wrote.

It takes a lot to overshadow a 4-for-4 night from Yandy Díaz. Eleven strikeouts, zero walks, and another dominant performance from the Rays' pitching staff did just that in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Yankees.

This time it was Shane McClanahan setting the tone, followed seamlessly by Cole Sulser and Bryan Baker, as the Rays carved through New York's lineup for a 3-0 victory. The Yankees drew no walks, struck out 11 times, and spent most of the evening chasing a moving target.
The game nearly took a different turn in the second inning.
Jasson Domínguez and Anthony Volpe opened the frame with back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners with **** ody out and giving the Yankees an early chance to build momentum. Instead, McClanahan delivered a defensive play that defined his night. Max Schuemann bounced a comebacker that turned into a frantic scramble, but McClanahan calmly fielded it, flipped home to Nick Fortes, and erased Domínguez trying to score. What could easily have been a Yankees run became the second out, and when Austin Wells popped out moments later, New York walked away empty-handed.
Yandy Díaz got things rolling in the third with a double into left, his second hit in as many trips. Jonathan Aranda followed with a line drive single to right, bringing Díaz home for the night's first run and a 1-0 lead.
McClanahan made quick work of the Yankees over the next three innings. The left-hander mixed his fastball and breaking pitches beautifully, generating weak contact early and strikeouts whenever he needed them. By the middle innings, New York hitters looked increasingly uncomfortable, often walking back toward the dugout after another late swing or frozen take.

Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove as a rookie, and the hope was always that he would develop into a better hitter while providing elite defense.
However, now in his fourth season, his defense has declined, and his bat is still below average. He is slashing .242/.338/.326 in 42 games this season. His defense last season hit an all-time low, and fans got a look at José Caballero at shortstop early in the year. Fans have questioned why Caballero has not gotten more opportunities at shortstop since Volpe returned and why Volpe has not played second base.
"He's been our shortstop, and he got hurt and had surgery over the winter. He's coming back, and we really haven't had — until Cabby walked in the door last year — a real competition-based thing there," Boone said before Wednesday's game, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. "By the way, he's been a (expletive) good shortstop. I hate to break it to everyone, but that still is real. Has he had his struggles? Sure. But he's also played really well out there in some long stretches defensively."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Anthony Volpe has no idea about the origin of a story that he refused a shift to second base while rehabbing from shoulder surgery in the minors earlier this season. But the Yankees shortstop insisted the report is not only false – the club never made such a request.
"Before I got optioned (to Triple-A on May 3) I told (Aaron Boone) I'd play catcher, I'd do literally anything the team needed and that's the truth," Volpe said before Wednesday's game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
"When I was getting ready to come back after surgery, when I could only start hitting, I was asking every night what was expected of me. What was told to me was to get ready to come back and play short.
"So for the opposite to be put out there, it's just confusing. I've never, ever felt that way."
The story originated on Tuesday's episode of the Michael Kay Show. Citing a rumor he had heard, Kay reported Volpe had turned down a request to play second for the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders.
